    thank you very much for making this video, it cleared up a lot of questions i was wondering about. i'd like to ask about something specific: i have a character who's a contract killer who uses hearing aids because he uses firearms a lot and it damaged his hearing over time. since he's a professional hitman he gets into physical fights occasionally, so i was wondering how easy is it to knock hearing aids out of someone's ear? is it really nestled in there or can it be dislodged by a punch or a kick? also, how durable are hearing aids? do they break easily?

    I want to thank you for this video. I’ll be getting an cochlear implant for my left ear most likely just after the first of the year. I’m trying to get educated on what to expect and after watching your video I now have a better idea. I will be wearing a regular hearing aid in my right ear. I was wondering how the sounds would be Ave you described that perfectly. So again thank you so much for making this video. It has really helped me.

    I very much appreciate this video! It provided some great insight into what to do and not to do, thank you so much! I am in the beginning phases of making a story with a completely deaf herbalist as the protagonist in a low fantasy world. I am personally leaning towards her not having any hearing aids or implants, so I was curious what other ways she might be able to communicate with those that do not know signing. Particularly, she will be forced to team up with a Hunter who is too impatient to write things down. I want there to be tension between them but I also want to find a reasonable way for their relationship to develop as their communication develops.

    • @nellefindlay
      @nellefindlay Місяць тому

      This sounds super cool. There are plenty of ways for her to communicate without hearing aids or implants with people who don't know sign language. The most obvious of which is just writing things down, but there are also transcription apps (assuming that makes sense for your setting) that work surprisingly well. Lipreading is also an option for simple stuff, but not great for long conversations. I hope this is helpful. Good luck with writing your story.

    So i'm a pretty avid world builder, so anyone reading this will probably by missing out on a lot of detail without me writing a literal novel but i am very starved of any feedback for my work, which has led me here in regards to a character of mine with moderate hearing loss. He has HAs, but doesn't like to use them, so one of the questions i want to ask is if it's ok to describe someone's BTE hearing aids as tangeled or "Dingy"/"Grimy", not to insult the character or to showcase them in a bad light, but to show that he doesn't like to use them/doesn't care to maintain them? Also, he lost some of his hearing due to a faulty grenade exploding while he was holding it, but initially, he ended up with profound hearing loss from that, so i wanna ask if you think it if could be offensive to some for him to recover up to moderate?

    • @nellefindlay
      @nellefindlay Місяць тому

      Firstly, hearing aids do get super dingy and grimy if you don't look after them. That's just a fact. They don't really get tangled though so maybe don't describe them like that. I would just say for sensitivity, just make sure that it's clear that you're saying the hearing aids are grimy because he doesn't clean them rather than hearing aids being inherently disgusting, I'm sure you already know this. I don't think having someone recover some degree of hearing after having an accident that caused hearing loss is offensive at all. It just depends how it's treated. I think creating a story where the narrative suggests that the character's life is sad and miserable because they are deaf and then regaining their hearing miraculously fixes all their problems then that is what can be offensive, not the improvement of hearing in itself.

    • @thegreatpigeon8999
      @thegreatpigeon8999 Місяць тому

      @@nellefindlay Thank you very much for the detailed answer, i don't really use this character's disabilities as a plot device/narrative tool very much, his hearing loss, even if it had been more severe, doesn't really impact his quality of life/happiness much, so i think i'm in the green

    I wonder if they will ever incorporate binaural information onto the sound so that you can focus on individual sound sources.(edit, i understand that two implants would be better for the stereo aspect, and much better for the binaural cues).

    • @nellefindlay
      @nellefindlay Місяць тому

      It depends on exactly what you're looking for, if you want a simple safety line that clips to your clothes, you can just buy them online if you google 'hearing aid retention line'. Connevans sells EarGear which is a slightly fancier option, but very good if you have a more active lifestyle or for people who are less careful with their hearing aids or implants.

    This popped up on my recommended page and I think it's pretty interesting to talk about! I'm not autistic or deaf and I only know English. I think in images, feelings, and words. I can hear words in my head, but I don't always think in words. A lot of the time, when I am thinking of something I will visualize it and experience feelings around it. I feel like I intuitively know what my emotions are and what they mean, but I sometimes have difficulty putting them into words. So, it's a bit of a mix for me.

    Woow, that's so interesting! I have a similar process of thinking (abstracts, images, words on writing, the way words feel). Suspect I'm autistic as well. I'm a hearing person who switches between languages a lot, fluent in 3. To me speaking second language is about mastering speech patterns and music (pauses, tones, intonations), and words just fall into their places. Sometimes, when I struggle I translate words in my head, flashcard style :D Thank you for making and sharing this video! 🍁

    This was brilliant and excellent explanations. The only thing is that you said two reasons to not get one are that it isn’t suitable, or you don’t want one, and they are the only two reasons. But the third separate reason, as you mentioned later, is that some cannot afford, so I suppose that is a third separate reason. All the questions were really interesting.

    • @nellefindlay
      @nellefindlay Місяць тому

      It's completely up to you what you want to do. My experience is that the robotic sound doesn't really bother me and I just view my implant as a tool to make my life easier rather than as something to fix my hearing. Cochlear implants are not your only choice however, you could decide to go down the sign language route or learn another communication strategy such as cued speech. Also transcriptions apps are pretty good now and a transcription app with a Bluetooth microphone can be a pretty good communication tool. I personally have found my cochlear implant incredibly useful and if I'm ever bothered by the sound, I just take off the processor. It's really important to remember though that you always have a choice and you have more than one option.

    Not really sure where I would fall within the deaf community so my thoughts may be irrelevant (for context, I have bilateral moderate reverse slope hearing loss and wear hearing aids). That said, I’ve made the decision to learn sign language for another method of communication in the event I fully lose my hearing in the future. I don’t really care either way whether the instructor is hearing or not, as long as they know the language fluently or at an advanced level.

      Hi, for me things do still sound quite robotic. Many people do say that cochlear implants sound completely natural for them after a while but it varies for everyone. Please don't apologise for having completely normal questions! Getting a cochlear implant is a big decision and it's really important to make sure you have as much information as possible. I'm deaf in both ears so I can't give any specific advice for single sided deafness, but since you have a good ear, that does open up more options for you with regards to technology, if you haven't already, and you're not 100% set on a CI, it might be worth looking into CROS hearing aids or bone conduction hearing devices, just to consider all your options.

      I'm truly sorry to hear about your girlfriend's accident, and I hope she’s doing okay. It’s understandable to feel upset after an experience like that. However, it's important to know that deaf people are legally allowed to drive in most places because research and statistics show that hearing is not required to be a safe and responsible driver. Deaf drivers often develop heightened visual awareness and use other senses to stay safe on the road. I hope this brings a bit of understanding to the topic, but again, I’m really sorry to hear about the accident and hope your girlfriend is recovering well.

      @@nellefindlay Nelle, back in the mid 70's I went to college, yeah I'm old 69 actually. I went as a business major and the college at the time had their semesters broken into quarters. So you went to classes 3/4 of the year and then did what was termed a co-op for 1/4 of the year. The idea behind this is that you would work in your field of study for that 1/4 and gain experience in that field. When it was my turn to go work the college didn't have any placements in business. So they asked if I would be willing to take a placement in an education program that no one had taken, the reason for this was to keep the position open and the college wouldn't lose it as a work study. I would be paid so I agreed to interview for it. Turns out it was a program funded by a university to give student teachers a place to get experience. What I didn't know was that it was for autistic young adults that had no social skills at all and the idea was to try to raise they're skill level to a point where they could possibly interact with others. This was completely foreign to me but I was offered the job and took it. I was in a world that I had never experienced, the students were self abusive, aggressive towards other students and staff, non verbal and needed assistance with all phases of every day life. I questioned my judgment the first week there because I was not use to this kind of thing. I'm going to shorten this and jump ahead. I completed my semester, the staff was excellent and we became very close because we needed each other for our students and our own safety. It was sad to leave and return to school and when my next co-op came around the college asked if I would go back and do it again for the same reasons....I said yes. And when I graduated I went back to work there until the program was shut down due to the lack of student teachers the university had in its program. It was a amazing experience and I actually met the woman who I would marry who had been a student teacher at the same time I was there. I hope I didn't bore you with the story, I've actually been a sub of yours for years. Hope you're doing great!!

    Hi Nelle, just watched your video on robotic speech sound. My new implant, activated two months ago, has normal speech sound not the robotic sound you demonstrated; however, I experience sound feedback and whistling, which over whelms the speech and is very annoying. Have you experienced a whistling feedback, and if so, how did your audiologist fix? I also have a very low static hum in background and Currently my Oticon hearing aid on my left ear balances out the sound but, like you I miss bits of conversations in noisy crowded rooms. Also liked your video on how you’ve implemented the various accessories, I need to get on that.

      Hi, I haven't experienced that at all. I have only experienced the robotic speech, but not whistling or feedback. I hope your audiologist can help you get that sorted. I'm glad you've found my video useful. It's definitely worth using the accessories, but sometimes it's easy to forget.

    Good tips. I've avoided getting my hair done for the last 4 years. Taking off the hearing aid and not having an understanding hairdresser was very stressful. The last few visits were not pleasant, so I've pretty much given up. Maybe I'll try again if I can find the right one.

    Hi Nelle! I’ve been watching your videos since I found your channel last week. They’re really great! I have a unilateral hearing loss due to a Cholesteatoma. I had 2 ear surgeries this year to address the issues that brought along with it. My HL journey sort of catapulted me into the Hearing Care world because I find it fascinating. So much so that I decided to change my career! So, I’m currently in school to earn my license in Hearing Aid dispensing! It’s really interesting and quite valuable to listen to your experience with your cochlear implant. Thank you for sharing with us! I hope you’re able to get your second one too 🙂
