BAND-MAID 's debut "Maid In Japan" ...10 years on, does it hold up?

The BABYMETAL Debut ...does it hold up 10 years later?

Babymetal had one of the most important debuts in the history of Japanese music. However, the now beloved metal band recorded it pre-Kami Band, still fresh to even listening to metal, and still primarily on J-Pop duties with school idol group Sakura Gakuin. So how does this legendary fusion album hold up compared to all the bands and albums it influenced... ...and is there a level on which it c...

TRiDENT - DUX ...our thoughts

With DUX being almost unprecendented, Trident mega-fan Howard, debates convert Benedikt, and Neon (who's such a newb to Trident, we are not sure he has worked out they aren't a visual kei band yet 😉) The question is simple, is this album the absolute best of the year, or is it a compilation designed to milk songs that were already released. Metal is a fast evolving genre, especially in Japan, and one that has stuck around for a long time. However, as Japanese artists evolve metal by mixing it with ingenious infusions of other genres, the question has to be asked... What makes a song metal? What percentage of a song has to be "metal" to call it a metal song? Is it useful to label bands as metal? Is there a more realistic way to des...

LOVEBITES release UNCHAINED ...& we discuss the new "Lovebites EP 2"
The Unholy Orpheus side project was in the works since before the release of the Evolution album back in April 2022 which had no growls, it was meant as a death metal counterpoint sister album, but took a lot longer to get completed to a point where the band was happy with the arrangements overall. They released a version of 'Want to Live' under the moniker 'Shiren from Unlucky Morpheus' back in May 2022. Plus Fuki guested on one song on the album and they did their own 15th Anniversary Tour where Unholy Orpheus was the opening act for Ankimo. Unlucky Morpheus aren't on hiatus per say and never announced as such, they're just doing other side projects whilst Fuki is doing the Doll$boxx/Gachapin tour, Jill has been doing concerts with a bunch of her other groups in the interim.
And now we know why Neon does growls. It was not, a Hell Yeah moment... Wait!! Unlucky Morpheus have done few things with out Fuki's vocals, Quadratrum for a start. They used to release Off vocal EP's (no singer) of album tracks, and that was the early day's. So Fuki not singing on tracks is not a new thing. Asterism are signed to Amuse, One OK Rock used to be signed to them. Yui is still signed to them.
Maybe do a Lionel Richie Hello Metal cover ? 🙂
Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Xmas gents.🤘🎄🤘Nemophila dropped a ridiculously hard metal song on Spotify today as a present for us all.
Everyone forgot about the collab between TMG and Babymetal with the song Eternal Flames
Well Metali had three reasons, Su wanted her Summerfest and this was the year when there were much reports about this problem, since the buddhist temples really accepted women this year. This was exactly their line. Than they needed a song for Momo and finally Tom Morello. Bollywood was kind of expected, while Ratatata was the surprise hit. And Leave it all behind was on the one hand a helping hand for F. Hero.
More mini-albums : PaleNeO "Octave" , Hagane "Life Goes On", East of Eden "Forbidden Fruit part 2"; Full Moon "Ancient Moon II", NEK! "Exclamation", and haven't Band-Maid announced a forthcoming mini-album / EP this summer.
Howard acting like he's gen z not knowing what band Slash is in, it's like Mr Beast not knowing who Prince was.
Leave it all Behind, RATATATA, Bekhauf. Metali is a Babymetal song with a guitar spot, that song is awesome live plus it's Momo first song she is on.
Because I don't follow both bands closely, I was surprised by Atarashii Gakko and band-that-should-not-be-named. Not something I particularly liked, just surprised me because I don't think both bands have done much collabs before. And an other news item: both Babymetal and Nemophila are getting a radio program, not on the same station, but announced on the same day I suggest Tenga as a sponsorship 🙂
I am not permitted to discuss the first sentence without my lawyer present lol, and unfortunately he doesn't exist because we are studio apartment dwelling UA-camrs lol I heard about the Babymetal one, it is a good step towards better fan interaction, and I think they have taken on a much more fun vibe post-The Other One. So I am glad! Nemophila members I think have been very cool on the media circuit over the years, so a radio show would be great! Tenga lmao!! YES! I mean, it suits our public image as a bunch of wa....
@@earstotheeast LOL also, from what I have seen Tenga seems to want to collab with anyone. Not saying anything about your bunch of people specifically, just saying they do it often so they might be open to that. So in that sense, slightly more realistic, but yeah, maybe the audience are also just a bunch of wa... 🙂
Something else, is ears to the east also interested in Chinese band SIXIWANZI ? Their original songs with traditional elements are very interesting.

Merry Christmas guys🌲🌲🌲
MERRY CHRISTMAS JANSAN! 🎄🥳🤘
Leave it all behit is my favorite Babymetal collab. It sounds like a Babymetal song
The album itself is pretty good. But why we love it so much, the live performances. Because that is what BABYMETAL is known for but that's not a bad thing. How many bands do we know to where their live performances are better than their studio albums. Also without SU-METAL it's just another group, her vocal style is so well known people hear her voice on collab songs and know it's her
This is unusual, I found myself agreeing with Howard (about 'Bekhauf', not about 'Oh! Majinai', that song is pure fun and the fact they got Joakim just singing "nai nana nai nai nai nai nai" is also very funny). 'RATATATA' does have more of a BABYMETAL feel to it than 'Bekhauf' even though it is very much in the EC style - that is clearly a collaboration and not a feature. Most importantly the 'RATATATA' tune immediately got stuck on repeat in my head after just one listen (this may be what gives it the more BABYMETAL feel). I have listened to 'Bekhauf' so many times, but once it finishes I can't remember the tune or melody until I listen to it again - I just don't find it "catchy" and catchy is the norm for BABYMETAL songs. I am not a big fan of growling and harsh vocals - they are fine used sparingly as highlights and with context (like in 'Kingslayer'), or with humour as happens in 'RATATATA'. I don't dislike the harsh vocals in 'Bekhauf' (they are not just screaming at me, I did find a bit of melody in there too), but it is just a bit too much harsh, nowhere near enough Su-metal for my own preferences. That is where 'Kingslayer' works so well, BMTH really did use BABYMETAL so much more and so much better with Su carrying a lot of the song's vocals. The best part of 'Bekhauf' was the short interlude with Bloodywood finally bringing in one of their traditional Indian instruments followed by Su's vocal section. More of that would have been good. I don't watch anime and, although the MV for 'Bekhauf' is very good, it turns out that I don't particularly like anime style visuals ... I had no idea that was the case before now.
👍BABYMETAL are the Queens of collaborations. 🦊 🖖❤
For me, it's very much feels similar to Kingslayer, the band takes ideas from Babymetal and incorporates it in their own song and has a Babymetal feature. I also think agree with Howard, that the Bloodywood song Babymetal feature could have been more Babymetal style. I love the song, but it could have been even better Metallica also has the potential to be a meh song, because the hype would not life up to the result. Raoul the rapper also was invited to become a Bloodywood member because of his lyrics writing. Bloodywood is 'self made' UA-cam/Patroen success, which is a pretty unique thing to happen. The 'hating' on Lil Uzi Vert song/feature is kind of sad, because it's pretty much a Paledusk song, trying to be do the Babymetal style with a feature of Lil Ui Vert and Babymetal, very much influenced by Gimme Choco. And let's remember Kobametal brought in the Paledusk songwriter. And from a recent interview I understood he's a long time Babymetal fan as well.
I agree, also about the Lil Uzi Vert song. It may not be the best, but it didn't sound much like a song I would expect to hear from a rapper. I get the impression that a lot of people hate on the idea of Lil Uzi Vert more than the song itself, but then by association they decide they must also dislike the song.
@@Grington300 FHero also got the social media comments, maybe Babymetal needs to perform with Lil Uzi Vert live
@@autohmae Yes he did - but 'PA PA YA' didn't get the same amount of hate as 'The End'. I wonder if a live performance would change that.
my personal opinion The ONLY good collab with Babymetal the the ones where is was just a guest instrumentalist. Ever song that featured another artist singing ( ro Babymetal singing on someone elses song ) have been bad again in my personal opinion and tastes. I feel they need to stop all the collabs and just make their own BABYMETAL songs.
It's kind of funny since I feel the exact opposite. Most of the pure instrumental collabs have been underwhelming for me. Like Metali is a great song but Tom Morello adds pretty much nothing to it in my opinion. I guess Brand New Day is the only pure instrumental collab that I really like. And on the other hand I really love pretty much all the songs with vocal collabs. Well except for maybe Oh Majinai and Distortion. Once again Distortion is a fine song on it's own but I really don't feel like Alissa from Arch Enemy adds anything to it:D
@ The instrumentation not having an effect on the songs may be way I like those collabs ... I am very vocal focused when I listen to music .. not lyrics vocals the sound of the human voice. I find all the vocal performances of the various babymetal collabs to clash with what I personal like. For me fabulous instrumentals cannot save a mediocre vocalist while a fabulous vocalist can save mediocre instrumentation.
Gatekeeping like typing detected.
Good conversation guys. Bloodywood typically don't use as much electronics/synths on their music, that part is very BABYMETAL. Koba is a producer on this song, and I think that, while remaining a Bloodywood song and staying true to their style, it still has enough BM flavor, so it feels very familiar to their fans.
I would say it's similar kind of feature as Kingslayer from BMTH, BMTH also took Babymetal's style elements and tried to make it their own.
@@autohmae BMTH are known for using lots of electronic elements in their music. BM fit very well in that, but both bands are musically similar (particularly when talking about post-Sempiternal BMTH). Bloodywood otoh, seldom use electronic elements. The heavy use of that in Bekhauf is the result of both bands blending their styles, as they still have BW's signature groovy riffs.
Hey guys, there’s well over 200 genres of metal,

i quite like MiJ and don't feel like 'it was rushed" at all. But, I like it as an album and would relisten to several songs from there although not every song. I like the album is totally appropriate for where they were in their musical journey and considering they hadn't moved from the idol-ish band circuit to the indies bands circuit. I think a lot of people don't the album because they're metal fans and it's not a musical creation in their preferred wheelhouse; that's totally fine. But, for indies pop rock and indies idol band circuit pop rock, I think this album is totally good for its niche. full writing control - really not important that at stage of their career. i think people are too quick to blame everything on management and labels. They were learning at that stage of their careers which they could later take that experience and use it through their careers to do their own thing. forward - predia (passpo sister group) also did this song - although it might have been the members of predia who did mochi and cheese with kanami and akane. I think this song works well for both the predia idol group and for band-maid. the live version of knockin' on your heart was great and could easily still be a great kobato acoustic song (even though it was a dual vocal song originally). Foward was also a dual vocal song. I think that's something they could sprinkle in on one song on any future album. I like songs like bittersweet love, etc but I totally understand that these styles of songs are not favoured by a lot of fans who are largely metal fans. Personally, I'm okay if they had a variety of songs in their albums as they have a variety of fans. BUT, I've seen blogs of some old fans who used to see them a lot on the circuit, then fell off a lot when they moved away to hard rock. I think it's easy to forget that some pretty hardcore fans have been dropped along the way so they've moved in a direction that isn't moving backwards.
Go and look through the archives of Rolling Quartz, and you will see that they originally played their first songs at a faster beat and they realized that's not what they wanted they liked the the sound but not the pace and they decided to slow it down and this is their sound, go look at archives and you'll see 😊
It's an album.😂 And i think we can all agree Momoko has been a success beyond anyone's expectations. She is equally loved and that is quite an achievement to hold her own with Suzuka and Moa.🤘🔥
You want something more than a group pretending to play their instruments, because they are generally not playing the instruments so you want more than that.
I tend to like fun video's. Band Maid's "Don't you Tell Me" is one, but I also like the way they show some aspect of each members personality in the video. Then there are the ones of the band just enjoying themselves. ALMONDot's "TSUNAMAYO ONIGIRI (director's edition)" is such a fun video, as they told 1 of the guitarists to just stand there and do nothing, but not tell the girls, just to see how they would react. For Babymetal it would be "Uki, Uki, Midnight" it the none live bit's in the video I like. Or the Unlucky Morpheus 1 day only video's (unless your a YT member), that they sometimes release on April 1st. It's where none of the members play their own instruments, and they all look as if they are having fun messing around. For a story line video's, has to be Ankor (Spanish Band). They have 7 video's that tell a story. Each video is different, and the music style is also different for each song.
For me personally a music video wont really affect how i feel about a song in a negative way, but sometimes it can highlight a song even more, i think Hanabie is a great example of this! 🤘🔥
The Kizu song Neon is talking about is 0 (zero).
I thought it was boobies, but Band-Maid proved me wrong.
You can't really answer it so open, like an Animationis by itself extremly expensive, while a normal video can be produced extremly cgeap and fast. But you loose much if you have only the musicians who mime playing the song. They never play zhe video to a studio mix.
A video can make or break a song for me. I'm very visually driven and tend not to listen to music without it being a music video or concert and I'm one of those who says that the live version of a song is pretty much always better than the studio version. One trap I think a lot of bands fall into is the 'performance' video. It's not live, but it focuses more on them playing than on giving the listener something interesting to watch. A performance can be good if it's something different, like a dance version or something. You actually have 2 of my favourites in the thumbnail; BABYMETAL's Doki Doki * Morning and BAND-MAID's Unleash!!!!! DDM is a fantastic video and is great for recommending to reactors as it's one of those videos that genuinely leaves you asking What the fuck did I just watch? What the hell is this? Like the band's music it lures you into a false sense of swcurity before slapping you round the face with sheer, unadulterated awesomeness. Unleash!!!!! is great not only because we get to see the girls in anime form, battling the Virus Of Unknown Origin which is fun for everyone, but it's also full of little easter eggs for the die hard fans. Another favourite video of mine is XXI CENTURY BLOOD by The Warning. Yes, it has elements of them performing, but it's intercut with an actual video that tells quite a powerful a story about how we live our lives. But yeah, an otherwise good song that has a terrible video won't get replayed by me, and an awful song with a great video will.
MIJ was never one for me. I don't know if their management wanted a pop-rock band originally, or they just set them up with a set of basic tunes just to get them out there and proving themselves as a live act, but it never sounds convincing. I can broadly rank tracks on a scale of 1-4, based on how I'd feel if the song came up next in the mp3 bucket of songs I have on a memory stick in my car. 1 - usually skip, 2 - ok, but skippable sometimes depending on my mood, 3 - I like this one, 4 - great, I love this track. Nothing on MIJ gets beyond a 2, mostly ones. In fact it's worse, as it's the only album I didn't bother buying, and I've bought every album after that, even if I don't think they've brought out a single song after Unseen World which ranks above a 2 either.
They would never release MIJ now. Why pay those songwriters again when they can write new music and get paid themselves? I certainly wouldn't waste the time if it were me. And most of those songs they haven't even played live since 2015. I think, to them, those songs are an old yoke they have stripped and have no desire to go back and put it back on.
I've said from the beginning that Nek! Reminds me (so far) of MIJ Band-Maid if they had not added Saiki. Granted, Netsu and Cocoro are not as technically advanced as Kanami and Akane were at the same age, but they are much farther ahead of most bands with their first offering.
For me, who grew up in the 70s and 80s, and was a young adult in the 90s, many of the songs on MIJ give me that nostalgic feeling that I still hear today in their own compositions. Be OK reminds me of that late 80s/early nineties pop punk feel of The Romantics, The Producers and the Replacements, and Yoaka Mae strongly reminds me of early Green Day. The others like Key, Bye My Tears and Knocking on Your Heart I could possibly dismiss if the live videos of those songs from those days weren't so enjoyable to look back on. Yes, I agree that it is their least "strong" album, but plenty of weaker albums have sold millions of units. I just think that market wasn't there at the time. It is interesting think about where they would have gone if one or two of those songs "took off." Based on what MISA was thinking at the time, we may have lost the BA, and Kanami may have become bored quickly.
I love all 4 albums!!
We can really only speculate but we do have enough information to make some reasonable if unconfirmed inferences: All the members have stated that they weren't convinced about the early musical direction. That's evidenced by the fact that, while seemingly nostalgic about a couple of those songs, they've virtually buried that material. Platinum Passport's expertise was in vocal pop music and, as far as we can tell, they had little to no experience developing rock bands. B-M was an early foray into the "girl rock boom." It's telling that PP seemed to have had no suitable instrumentalists on its roster at the time. And it's probably why the original audition call for musicians for the project apparently got exactly zero responses (according to Miku). PP was probably playing it very safe, understandably. I get the feeling that they thought that if they just had cute young women actually playing instruments, performing mild, nearly-edgy rock music, and a visual gimmick, that might have been enough to light a spark. I don't think it's a big leap to speculate that if they had continued that way, the band would have been a short-lived curiosity.
🤘🤘🤘🤘❤💛💙
From what I've heard about MISA's taste in music, I think she would be unhappy if the maids were to go back to the more pop sound. Best not to disappoint the barefoot assassin ;)
I'll be very disappointed if they go the more mainstream sound.
I'm much more a fan of their self-written songs, though there are several on Brand New Maid and New Beginnings that are favorites of mine. But for me, there's no stand out tracks on Maid in Japan. I much prefer Hatoful by Cluppo. The way I typically listen to Band-Maid is on a playlist, set on shuffle, that contains all their music that I own -- except Maid in Japan. Sometimes I'll skip Rock in Me too.
I like all their albums since Brand New World right through to the current one. I like the newer ones just as much as the older ones and have favourites from each Album. Love their changes and experimentation and evolution. Some fans prefer the older suff , maybe don't like change but a band can't keep pumping out the same stuff. Epic Narratives has been listened to by me dozens of times, love it. Thank god Kanami never stamds still in her compositions.. Listening to Epic Narratives has caused me to go back and listen to all their previous Albums (available under the Releases tab on their UA-cam channel. So love Epic Narratives, Unleash, Unseen World and of the older ones really like Just Bring it, Conqueror and World Domination. Ooop almost all their albums!!!!
From what I recall from previous discussions, the songs on Maid in Japan were written by songwriters previously used by Platinum Passport before the band had come together - effectively the album constitutes their demo recordings tidied up for public consumption. The band had no identity at this stage apart from the image (maid costumes) and a vague idea to make "cool" music. PP were mainly working with idol singers and groups, so the songs were more pop orientated, very generic but professionally written. As an album it has its enjoyable moments, the re-release has Summer Days and Ai to Jonetsu from the subsequent EP (Thrill making on to New Beginning)
I'm a newbie joining from the lollapalooza concert on youtube. So I love Epic Narratives yet my third most listened to song in 2024 was Freezer. I have not gone through album by album however but that's my new year's resolution.
Welcome! It's always cool to see new fans become interested enough to start watching videos like this.
@tinyhato Thanks. Does your tag line refer to Akane's hat she wore early on, or just a coincidence? 🦍🥁
Certainly not a coincidence. @@msquare249 RIP Tiny Hato! 🦍
The earlier BAND-MAID albums are by far the best and almost all of their best songs pre-date WORLD DOMINATION. Nowadays, they seem to just be writing songs to show off how good they are at playing their instruments instead of just writing good songs. I don't particularly like the new self-penned songs. They're either too slow and boring or they're far too chaotic and noisy. Ai to Jonetsu and Summer Drive are both infinitely re-playable and Forward is an all-time classic.
While I respect your opinion and tastes, I am interpreting your definition of "best" to be " what I like best." You are certainly in the minority, but that is the great thing about Band-Maid. I much more enjoy the NB-WD era over both MIJ and UW through EN. But that isn't to say that I do not respect the vast improvement in songwriting and musical execution post WD.
ai to jonetsu no matador, summer drive, and forward are all really fun songs. I'd totally listen to those songs a lot more if youtube music had them (youtube music in Japan has everything except for MiJ and the Ai to Jo./Summer Drive single. Personally, JBI is my favourite of the albums but all the albums have songs I really like and songs I like less. But, I think newer songs are trying to be very complicated, very layered, etc which I don't think is actually needed but I get that some of their fans are really into. So, I think it's good if they add some more laid back or stripped back or ballads etc to each album and hope they add those to all future albums.
Will hold up all the time
The Yen is low?
US is the biggest music market and the most fans. Hanabie has Sony super deep pockets so not a viable comparison, for money reasons a better choice would be Bridear or Lovebites. And in Japan there are many more Americans at shows than euros, finally at the last two Zepp shows there were some Europeans but many already were in Japan, unlike the majority of Americans who flew over. And Fans enough is a bogus line. save money, get a second job. sell stuff, save save save. that's what we do. assuming we can afford it easily is bs.
Hahaha. Just bought this album about 2 weeks ago. Still is cool. Probably even cooler than when it was released.
I think the first album holds up amazingly for the most part. I would have liked to have heard a discussion of each song, but that's fine. For example, Uki Uki Midnight is great, but it's also VERY early 2010's with the dubstep influence. Doki Doki Morning, iine, Gimme Chocolate for the wow/shock factor, but Death, Megitsune, Ijime Dame Zettai,, Akatsuki, Headbangerrr, Rondo of Nightmare...classic heavy metal that any open-minded metal head could appreciate. There's a reason why 3 to 4 of the songs they play at most of their concerts are still from their first album.
