Sonamarg or Sonmarg is a hill station located in the Ganderbal District of Jammu and Kashmir and means meadow of gold. It is located about 62 kilometers from Ganderbal Town and about 90 kilometres northeast of the Srinagar on Laddkh Highway (National Highway NH 1A). This video shows you the stunning visuals of heavy snowfall in Sonmarg on 16 November 2024 which also was the first snowfall of the season in Kashmir Valley. Sonmarg is an important base camp of famous Amarnath Yatra through Baltal route. Sonamarg had historic significance as a gateway to Laddakh and is a part of the ancient Silk Road, connecting Kashmir with Tibet and central Asia. It is the famous hill station is a popular tourist destination situated in the Kashmir Valley, at an altitude of 2,730 metres (8,960 ft) and is close to some of the valley's tallest peaks, alongside the Machoi Glacier, Sirbal Peak, Kolahoi Peak, Amarnath Peak and Machoi Peak. On the way to Sonmarg at village Gagangir a The Z-Morh Tunnel is being built to keep the road open year-round, and is due for completion in 2024. Moreover a 14.2 km long tunnel is also being constructed at Zojila Pass from Baltal to Gumri to make the Leh highway accessible in winter months.
This video captures the beautiful visuals of snow falling and tourists enjoying the first snowfall in Kashmir. Winter in Sonmarg is long and severe. The minimum temperature in mid-winter can easily go down to minus 25 Degrees Celsius and even the maximum temperature can hardly go up to minus 7-8 Degrees Celsius. Snowfall can be experienced from October to April. Though snowfall is massive in mid-winter but to comfortably enjoy snowfall it is better to visit in early or late winter in the months of October, November, February or March. Sind river which is a tributary of Jhelum River flows through Sonmarg and whole Sind valley. Road to Sonmarg gradually climbs upwards from Vail bridge alongside the Sind River. You can visit ancient Naranag Temple enroute to Sonmarg. It is worth mentioning that this Sind River is not Indus / Sind River it is only a tributary of Jhelum River. It is important to have adequate warm clothes and heated accommodation and car if you are planning to visit Sonmarg in winter. There are many hotels and cottages available for the night stay however its recommended to make your bookings in advance. Moreover, keep an eye on decent weather forecast source and avoid dry spells if you want to visit for snowfall.
