Hi Darrell A Happy New Year to you, yours, and everyone at Island Packet. Frankly, I may not be able to afford to buy an IP 349, but I have been thinking - yep, I know, that’s dangerous right 😅 - for quite a few years now, about something different for in Mast Furling, combined with a low Air Draft height of 40 feet above the Waterline, combined with a short Boom that has the end only reaching to the Mainsheet track in front of the Dodger - bear with me - this would impose a blade type shaped Main Sail, that now has the room inside the mast to be constructed really strong and with say a a Triradial Construction with say three reinforced reefing Points and No Battens, so no batten wear and tear increased furling and unfurling reliability, and a Sail incredibly resistant to blowing out, and which would allow the final reef to leave a small close to the Mast Staysail. I have had it confirmed by precision Sails, that a Triradial construction recovers most of the power lost from not having any battens.Darrell, I have had confirmation that this kind of setup can actually work, and work well via a very unusual source - Practical Sailor Channel recently put up a video about Sailboat Drones, one of which was deliberately Sailed into a Category 4 Hurricane to take measurements and was then Sailed out of it again ! Forces from the lower mast height would be closer to the deck, helping prevent excessive heeling and possible capsize, and the Preventers on the shorter boom should be Far less stressed, so all around, everything around the mast should be more durable and Reliable. Not that I am saying anyone should be stuoid enough to Sail into an actual Hurricane of course, but such reliability should ease minds when Caught out in severe conditions. So if I am successful enough to get my Piggybank filled up enough to order an IP 349 - fingers crossed and God Willing, this might just happen in 2025, the important questions are, What is the distance between the Mast and the front of Dodger Mainsheet Track, shorter Boom Length, and will Selden make a 40 feet above the Waterline Air Draft Mast, with lots of room for a heavy duty long term reliable Main Sail.the standing Rigging will likely need upgrading to Match.. Given the successful implementation with drones, if I can afford the IP 349, I am willing for it to be used as a test bed to get this working and for it to be of benefit and available for anyone to have available for their Sailboats. Good furling Headsails to complement this setup should not be difficult to achieve either. Hoping this is at least making sense, best wishes to you all, Bob in Wales. 👍🌟⛵️ PS. For Cruisers and Voyagers, Such a Mainsail System, shouldn’t significantly affect boat speed, but it may well take a serious of adjustments to the design to get things just right. 🤔 👍

I'm a boat nerd and love to see how these boats are built. Thank you to Island Packet for giving me a glimpse. Newbie's are a bit taken aback with how much maintenance a boat needs. I remind them that boats aren't mass produced like cars. If you're going to make 1 million cars, you have to make sure you get them right before they go out the door, so you build and test to destruction many cars before you start shipping them. However, this is rarely done with boats, maybe just on a few high volume Beneteau boats where they're really trying to cut costs by choosing less expensive lamination techniques. But most manufacturers can't do that because they only make anywhere from a handful to a few thousand boats a year (well, pick a number based on the manufacturer, but it isn't 1 million). All they can do is to study how previous ones failed and improve their next design. This is a slow process that takes years (decades). Unfortunately the market has gone away from full keel boats like Island Packet. I think that there are much better boats for "coastal cruising" and hanging out in the tropics, but that's where most of the boat sales are. Then people buy these used boats that are optimized for coastal cruising and start crossing oceans with them because they're much more affordable. Now 99% of the time you'll be fine, but a bad storm will stress the "lesser" cruising rigging and a grounding can destroy the grid that the bolt on keels attach to. These events are rare, but you are taking a greater chance with these lighter, faster, and roomier boats. But everything's a tradeoff... The oceans are better mapped, but there's also more cargo ships and crap floating around in them... (Note that satellite communication does a great job at lessening the chance of running into a storm, but storms can always blow up out of seemingly nothing. I just went sailing with a forecast of 5-10 knots of wind that turned into a 25 knot small craft advisory... fortunately I had been wanting to test my boat out in heavier weather so that worked out for me.) In my mind, boats like Island Packets are great "adventure" boats. Boats you'll take to places off the beaten path where solid construction is a higher priority than an extra 3 knots of speed and a cockpit you can turn into a miniature dance hall. Man, those big coastal cruisers make my heart pound, but the pounding that those flat bottoms will take out on the water will make my wife's heart pound in the wrong way... But then we've gotten old and can't deal with the physical demands of a flat bottom boat as well as we used to. Damn. One gripe I have with boats is the hull and deck being glued and bolted together. I do not understand why they don't fiberglass them together so a leak will never develop. What am I not understanding???

I don't own an Island Packet boat, but I do own a full keel boat. I chose it for its sea kindness as my wife and I are going to be in our 60's when we start cruising. I really am torn over the slow full keel boats vs the fast modern flat hull designs, but at the end of the day, I couldn't risk scaring the hell out of my wife on a bad passage with a modern hull pounding hard. There's also the piece of mind of not having a bolt on keel and spade rudder that can be somewhat easily damaged if you run into something. "There are two types of sailors, those who have run around and those who are going to run aground." I feel a bit stupid having a full keel boats when there are far superior hull shapes available. When I sail out in Galveston bay, the racer/cruisers will basically go flying past me, but they're also bouncing up and down getting covered with spray while I'm barely even feeling the waves... While there IS safety in speed, I'll just have to content myself with not being in a hurry. I've never sailed an Island Packet, but I toured a few of their boats. They seem to be superbly built. I felt like I was in a very "tight" and solidly built boat.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "modified full keel" described here with such great ardor has been around at least 100 years. I mean, how long ago did the Clipper ships stop being a thing? And when did Olin Stephens start his naval engineering career? (1930's) In addition, an internal poured keel does not get its lead quite as low as a bolt on, which is how a majority of sailboats are outfitted. For good reason. So Hooray! for Island Packet Designs and Bob somebody and his sea kindly designs, but c'mon ,man.

Actually a second head is also vital, if you need a delivery Skipper and Crew occasionally as well tbh.though a single nice sit down shower is really no problem, so that allows a quite compact second Head. Not holding my breath, but I might just squeeze in an IP349 yet. ✌️ Best Wishes. @markph0204 Hi Mark. I had hoped to stretch to the IP 439, but the IP 349 is more the size Sailboat I am used to, my Last Sailboat ceing a long Keeled Shallow Draft Endeavour 32 in wonderful Condition with an almost Complete Refit already done, but only for me to discover, that due to Disabilities, I can no longer handle the Classic Sailboat aspects of a Classic Sailboat - Classic Stackpack Mast was a nightmare, Classic closed Stern, a Nightmare just getting on and off the Boat, unless as Super Fit as I was in my youth, etc. the only thing that continued to be perfect for me was that long Keel with its 4.2 foot Draft. the Draft of the IP 349 ? an even better bang on 4 foot Draft. Talk about a Major Win of a Sailboat for me. Apart from being able to accommodate that important 2nd Head, it can also be built with two Saloon Aetee Aea Berths, instead of one plus those nice Captain's Chairs as I will occasionally require a Delivery Skipper (actually my intention is for Trainee Yactmaster /Coastal Skipper types, and Trainee Crew, and or International,Certificate of Competence types, to get their needed logs completed and signed off at very low cost if not as close to free as possible - Because I am Such an old Fart, I had the Benefit of all that by being Grandfathered in, such that I only have to do a major Voyage, hand in the Logs for it, and everything gets refreshed. As I am no longer interested in doing it Professionally, hence as close as possible to free for qualifying Trips, things have become so insanely Bureaucratic - example, you can't even check in to Greek Waters without an ICC now- despite Never even having been asked to produce an ICC, I had better make sure to log every Trip from now on, and hand the Logs in early to the Superb RYA or American equivalent instructors, to keep that ICC up to date, So with Aft Double Cabin, Pullman in the bow, two heads and two saloon Setee Berths the boat should be Comfy enough, and able to carry enough Provisions to be able to pay back for something that due to being in the right place at the right time, I got for free. a bit like my Grandfather, who at 14 years old was taught to drive by the local MP, then in the First World War got a .Pilots Licence after being a Bomber Pilot - He was the best Driver I ever sat in a Car with, yet never had to take a driving test for anything, because he got grandfathered in for literally Everything. I'm actually starting to think that all this Qualification Stuff is actually making things worse, because it really is all about making Money from it tbh. Though fair play, every Sailing Instructor I have met has been enthusiastic, very knowledgeable, and excellent to turn to for advice on any Sailing related Subject. Same in the USA tbh, and I was particularly impressed by the USCG, which Frankly, if Young Enough, I would Volunteer For in a Heartbeat. After the Tornado I had been through, they pulled alongside, to see if things were ok, and I was delighted to invite them aboard to heck if things were still OK, as below deckscwazs still a pretty disorganised Mess, and I was able to immediately reach for every bit of Safety equipment etc that they needed to see, and stayed in the Cockpit for Coffee, Cookies, and a long Chat. They even sorted out a 12 month Cruising Licence for me to pick up from the New Jersey Office, which sadly the Journey through New York Harbour attempting to get to the Anchorages on the Gudson , ended up losing me the Boat due to a Wrecking Gang Working New York Harbour at night. Still, she was a tough enough Boat for me to be the first one to Survive one of their very frequent attacks alive, before being lost off New Jersey.
