Five Minutes of Pure Photography Without Talk In this video, I take my large 4x5 camera out to photograph an abandoned house in Lisbon. Experience the process as I use four different lenses: a 110mm Petzval, a 210mm Petzval, a Cooke Series II of 5 inches, and an Agfa Apotar 85mm. This is a purely visual experience, offering almost five minutes of uninterrupted photography-watch as I prepare the...

      I have to admit one thing. When first got the camera, a few years ago, and having the "full set" of the Nikon F, I did not expect much of it. Then I noticed that I was leaving more the Nikon F4 and Nikon F5 at home and picking up more the Minolta. I guess that she does the same as the others with half the weight. I also like (what does not happen with the kit lens from Nikon) how the Minolta kit lens renders black and white . Even today I left my 1969 Nikon F at home and picked up the Minolta 600...

    We used TLR Rolleiflex in the early 1970s shooting weddings because people blinking due to the slow flash duration of early speedlights like the Graflex and way the mirror of an SLR Hasselblad or 35mm blocks the viewfinder as the flash fires. It’s easy to see the blinks with TLR because the flash freezes the action and the retina retains it. Shorter flash duration and pre-flash to constrict pupils and eliminate ‘red eye’ reflection from retina from flash on lens axis reduced the blinking problem.

      Dear Teddy, many MANY thanks for your extremely instructive comment. You made my day as I learned something new :) I really don't use flash that much, because in street photography the flash would stand out like a sore thumb, but reading your comment makes me think that it might not be such a bad idea afterall...

      @paulodefeyter Місяць тому

      @@Renderprism that is absolutely true. I sometimes wonder why people do adhere more to the "megapixels" argument and don't look more at the craftsmanship behind a "mechanical" camera and it's inherent beauty. I do a lot of images so it's quite frequent that rolls accumulate waiting to be developed. This makes me forget about the images I took and when I develop them, a month after taking them, several times I'm caught gazing in bewilderment at the strips of negatives hanging for drying at my small bathroom.... The same does not happen when shooting with a digital camera. And I dare say, a photographer in the 1980's knew more about light than a photographer of the 2020's...

The other thing is that it disappears in your hands. You're not holding a camera. You're just taking photos. I know that sounds like BS but it's true.

    When I was shooting weddings and portraits, I relied on the quiet Mamiya TLR cameras with 55/80/180mm lenses. When I stopped shooting weddings and was primarily shooting portraits and products, I decided to replace my worn TLR wedding cameras with Mamiya RB67 SLRs with 50/90/180mm lenses. Yes I like the idea of swapping film backs, but for the price if I ever get to the point where that becomes a “must have”, I’ll get a “smaller/lighter” c3 or 33 to go with my c330…. I just wish I lived somewhere with more folk who could service any film camera. I enjoyed this - was a bit sceptical of the title (I think they’re like “chalk and cheese” in many respects), but was a very nice change from most vids about C series which tend to be “first impression” types. The photos turned out nice! Large format looks so fun! Those cameras seem so flexible. Lots of creativity can be had with them it seems. I have a question, are there lenses for large format that are as wide as about 15mm on a full frame/35mm camera? I’m asking because I was out the other day shooting with mine and I was thinking about why there is that distortion you get with ultra wide lenses. I’m not talking about barrel/pincushion distortion (my lens doesn’t have those) but just the way that the corners and sides of the photo looks stretched, you know? I was thinking that part of it might be because you’re squeezing down a very wide field of view to a small sensor. And I was thinking that maybe a lens with the equivalent field of view on large format would have less of that distortion. Do you know if that is true or did I reason incorrectly?

    • @paulodefeyter
      @paulodefeyter 2 місяці тому

      Hi there and Good evening! I know exactly what you mean because I do have several 11-20, 16-20 lenses so I do know the kind of distortion you're mentioning (and how well it looks when properly done). There are a few lenses in LF that can get "almost" that kind of look but they come with some drawbacks. I have a 90mm f5.6 which when focused to the infinity it's very, but VERY close to the ground glass. It is enough to have movements but it pretty much very tight... There are lenses of 60 and 75mm for LF, but I suspect that they might just cover the 4x5 and be really impossible to make movements with them and could force you to have a recessed lens board to mount them. If you look at the beginning of the video, there is a small curiosity... I used a 75mm medium format lens which does not cover the 4x5 format... It's the image which you can completely see the blackness of the barrel like the "beginning of a James bond movie". I know that there is a Nikkor 65 and also a Schneider 58 f5.6 that should give you that desired "distortion" of a wide angle. I've heard of, but never saw one, 45 or 48mm (Cant remember well) which should put the equivalent to a 11 or 15 in 135 format (which people call now full frame). They are however, somewhat rare and do expect the price to be moderately expensive for them,,,

I used to do this with my Mamiya C3 a 135 to 120 adapter and a 120 spool with scotch tape to be the film receiver. The only drawback is that once I'd use the whole film, I would have to wait to get back hope and open the film compartment inside my dark room. The VB here will Excell as she is a very quiet camera, and the old shooting trigger is very concealed. Rolleicord and Rolleiflexes are excellent in the street for 2 reasons, first you shoot from the hip/belly, and as you are not taking the camera to your eye, the persons around you get photographed in a much more natural pose. And second, those extremely few who notice you shooting them, like it so much that they don't mind you photographing them and don't confront you.

      In good truth what really matter is the final result and there is no incorrect way (unless you cheat with software) to do it. I normally tell people that Photography is like racing. The needs and way of a Formula 1 racer are completely different from the needs and way of a Marathon racer. however both of them want to get to the finish line first. With photography is exactly the same. A wedding photographer cannot go to a event and do 2 or 3 shots, as well as a Large Format photographer will not go to a mountain range and do 250 shots expecting that one of them be "ok´ish"...Photography is a really spread-out wide universe. For instance, I have no need for a 800mm prime lens, but my neighbour, who could be a wild life shooter, might not leave to work without one :)

      @@jasongold6751 it is an excruciatingly slow process not for the "run'n'gun" kind of photographers... It's a nightmare to see that the images are over the sprocket wholes! But once you get the hang of it, you get it done with some level of delay. :) here the canon also has a small advantage as the spool locks itself via a spring, and only locks when it is in the correct position.
