Unlike digital or even smaller film formats, the deliberate approach required by large format forces you to slow down, examine each element, and truly see the world. When I was shooting weddings and portraits, I relied on the quiet Mamiya TLR cameras with 55/80/180mm lenses. When I stopped shooting weddings and was primarily shooting portraits and products, I decided to replace my worn TLR wedding cameras with Mamiya RB67 SLRs with 50/90/180mm lenses. The Hasselblad is a fine camera with great lenses. However, when I was shooting weddings, it was too noisy for my tastes. Also, it was too expensive for my budget.

    Over the decades, I have used Mamiya TLR (C3, C22, C220) and Mamiya RB67 SLR medium format film cameras. On at least two different occasions, I considered buying a Hasselblad but could never justify the expense.

      @@Narsuitus you did well on not going for a Hasselblad because in the end you would not notice any big difference on image quality as the Mamiya is a capable camera. I use Hasselblad for one main reason over the Mamiya... With the old hassy backs, you are able to do 13 shots on a 120 roll. This is the main advantage over the Mamiya.

    Not only are the bodies way cheaper, so are the lenses. Yes I like the idea of swapping film backs, but for the price if I ever get to the point where that becomes a “must have”, I’ll get a “smaller/lighter” c3 or 33 to go with my c330…. I just wish I lived somewhere with more folk who could service any film camera. I enjoyed this - was a bit sceptical of the title (I think they’re like “chalk and cheese” in many respects), but was a very nice change from most vids about C series which tend to be “first impression” types. Look forward to watching more of your work.

I don't smoke and I don't drink alcohol, so I guess that's my healthy addiction :) if you don't shoot but have a 4x5, then I would suggest you sell the camera to someone who uses it at a fair price. Besides, photographic material unused only gets its price decreased as time goes by :)

    The photos turned out nice! Large format looks so fun! Those cameras seem so flexible. Lots of creativity can be had with them it seems. I have a question, are there lenses for large format that are as wide as about 15mm on a full frame/35mm camera? I’m asking because I was out the other day shooting with mine and I was thinking about why there is that distortion you get with ultra wide lenses. I’m not talking about barrel/pincushion distortion (my lens doesn’t have those) but just the way that the corners and sides of the photo looks stretched, you know? I was thinking that part of it might be because you’re squeezing down a very wide field of view to a small sensor. And I was thinking that maybe a lens with the equivalent field of view on large format would have less of that distortion. Do you know if that is true or did I reason incorrectly?

    • @paulodefeyter
      @paulodefeyter 23 дні тому

      Hi there and Good evening! I know exactly what you mean because I do have several 11-20, 16-20 lenses so I do know the kind of distortion you're mentioning (and how well it looks when properly done). There are a few lenses in LF that can get "almost" that kind of look but they come with some drawbacks. I have a 90mm f5.6 which when focused to the infinity it's very, but VERY close to the ground glass. It is enough to have movements but it pretty much very tight... There are lenses of 60 and 75mm for LF, but I suspect that they might just cover the 4x5 and be really impossible to make movements with them and could force you to have a recessed lens board to mount them. If you look at the beginning of the video, there is a small curiosity... I used a 75mm medium format lens which does not cover the 4x5 format... It's the image which you can completely see the blackness of the barrel like the "beginning of a James bond movie". I know that there is a Nikkor 65 and also a Schneider 58 f5.6 that should give you that desired "distortion" of a wide angle. I've heard of, but never saw one, 45 or 48mm (Cant remember well) which should put the equivalent to a 11 or 15 in 135 format (which people call now full frame). They are however, somewhat rare and do expect the price to be moderately expensive for them,,,

The needs and way of a Formula 1 racer are completely different from the needs and way of a Marathon racer. however both of them want to get to the finish line first. With photography is exactly the same. A wedding photographer cannot go to a event and do 2 or 3 shots, as well as a Large Format photographer will not go to a mountain range and do 250 shots expecting that one of them be "ok´ish"...Photography is a really spread-out wide universe. I always use a squeegee but I wash it first so that the rubber is not that hard on the film. On my case (135, 120 and 4x5) it gets the job done and suits me well. I also pre-wash and after-wash the film :) No scratches what-so-ever :)

    Great video. Warning that loading film is a problem! Need long leader as shown by Leica! Use a thin card to press film onto sprockets! Photos from those older lenses, to my eyes, look like from the past! You want retro? It's here!

    • @paulodefeyter
      @paulodefeyter Місяць тому

      @@jasongold6751 it is an excruciatingly slow process not for the "run'n'gun" kind of photographers... It's a nightmare to see that the images are over the sprocket wholes! But once you get the hang of it, you get it done with some level of delay. :) here the canon also has a small advantage as the spool locks itself via a spring, and only locks when it is in the correct position. So there is no need to open the shutter and push the film with your own hand into place.

    Terrific video. Thanks. I will just say that we all know the moon landing was faked now. Stanley Kubrick admitted to it at an interview, so the Hasselblad did not ever go to the moon, but only went into outer space to take that wonderful picture of Earth, and it was used in the studio in Hollywood where they made the moon landing film.

    I I think this lens is sharp but the close focus is 1.2m and the focus distance is extremely far from 20m to infinity. Taking photos is ok but shooting video with this lens is not as good in design as the nikon 35-70mm lens (nearest focus 0.5m, before infinity is 5 meter)

      True, bit on this case one cannot judge a lens for what it was not made for. Videos on "regular" DSLRs only appeared on the later part of the 2000's decade, so by that time this lens was out of production. :)

I like to shoot my old XD7 the most, have it since decades. 2nd spot is the X700, from Minolta. With Nikon, i really loved my FM, before i finally sold it. Every brand does have good, great or not so great bodies - the same with digital, nowadays. Not every model from any brand is the same, quite popular. I returned the camera so that they could have someone to have a look at it. 1 month goes by and notrhing, went back to the shop (40 miles away) they said that it was June/July so it was going to take more than usual.... waited for another month and then stormed the shop for answers.... they gave me my money back, eventually.

      Hi Steve! Thanks for the comment. I don't know if you'll like Foma 400 with Rodinal, as with the 400 version Rodinal will boost the grain quite a lot. Personally I do not appreciate it that much as it becomes more like a "potato field" rather than an image. Fomapan 100 is fine, 200 is "ok'ish", 400 is a bit too much for my taste. What I'd really like to see from Foma, is the Ortho in 4x5. That would make my day :)

      @@steveshadowphoto9346 Hi Steve! Many thanks for your comment. You know? There are a lot of myths in photography that people just hear and repeat it over and over to a point that they assume that it's a true thing. Nowadays when someone say something about a body or a lens, people just assume that it's true. The shame on all this is that they don't give space for trying it out for themselves. It's kind of "I heard my neighbour saying that beer tastes bad, so I'm not even going to try it out for myself.... Beer is blerghhh!!" . Another thing on my videos is that it's just the goofy way that I am... About 20 years ago me and my ex-wife were at a friend's house in Belgium. It used to be a former pre-school that was bombed out by the Germans during the Ardennes offensive. According to them, the house has since been haunted. One night, somewhere close to 2 Am , we were about to hit the sack when we heard our dog jumping and going for the bedroom door growling . We stood motionless as we heard long footsteps reaching for our door and seconds after someone, or something, knocked at the door. I looked at my ex-wife, looked at my growling dog, and said out loud : "Would you come in?"... And got slapped by my wife ...

      @@paulodefeyter Now, that is a great story and is just what I would have said! And, I do agree with you about social media; people read or hear something and take it as the truth without really knowing. Over the years (since I first picked up a camera in the early 1970's) I've used a lot of equipment; some good, some bad, some expensive and mostly, cheap. Often, cheap was better!
