A place where I share my passion for the two wheeled toys.
I hope you see something that helps to get you motivated to ride!
For me, some of the most fun about 2 wheels, is getting them on to 1 wheel! (either one)

Wow, what a day! The Santa Cruz, California Ridge Runners club put on a great event. My 2001 KLR650 is my only plated ride worthy of any dirt, so I rode it. This is part 1 of 3. I rode all the hardest splits (why not?) Unfortunately, when we got to the first dirt section, it looked like a backlog of over an hour, so we skipped ahead to try and get ahead of the crowd (since I was still recoverin...

Some pretty epic and at times gnarly (for me on a KLR650) trails starting from Topaz lake. 155 miles on Saturday to Mt Patterson (11,673 feet! /3,558 meters) and down through Bodie ghost town and Bridgeport, followed by a Sunday ride of 55 miles out towards Markleeville CA. Thanks to Jerry Counts for the GPS tracks (his Topaz 400 dualsport ride) and big thanks to my friend for helping pick up m...

A quick edit of the limited time I had the GoPro turned on (I was too rushed to change batteries or even turn the thing on!) This video comes from somewhere near the middle of a 74 mile ride. Big thanks to the CERA club and all their helpers for putting on a good event! (The bike is my somewhat new to me 2015 KTM 300XC)

A rainy day practice: perfectly nasty conditions! This was my 3rd (and best) run up this ravine (I edited out some of my struggles and paving). When I get time I’ll edit the full struggles of all 3 of my loops. 2004 YZ250 For a look at this section from one of the top hard enduro riders in the world, go to Cody Webb’s video (of course he takes the harder lines, too): ua-cam.com/video/riZP2WN6W3...

Man, you handle that beast like it was a small bike! I have a Dr 650 and I know I wouldn't do that on mine! I also have a DR 350 with knobbies, and even on it I would have some major butt puckers!! Great ride!
Another reason to hate quads but love your bravery!!!
What event was this? And was it on private property or an ohv area? Looks like a blast
Nice one! I love riding my xr650L in the woods, all that torque and a little extra weight give it so much traction everywhere
How does one get an invite? Love the hard stuff
Where is this? Looks awesome
That was a crazy event and watching the “hard splits” that you did on your KLR I am glad I didn’t try em with mine! Insane riding abilities Doug and can’t wait for next time! After watching you previous times at the event I thought I was gonna do fine but GoPro don’t show how gnarly it REALLY is...
Thanks Bryan! I'll see you at the next one, hopefully sooner
Excellent video! One of the things I enjoy most about my 06 KLR is challenging myself to see how deep into the woods I can get. The first time I rode Loretta Lynn's trail ride was with factory gearing & a set of street tires. Needless to say I didn't finish the ride but, the KLR is more than capable of it with a fresh set of D-606's & dropping a tooth on the front. I've ridden stuff like this but, I do it with much more tip overs & engine stalling. I usually like to keep factory gearing unless I know I'll be doing something like this. What I like best about the KLR is how it is a true 50/50 machine, capable of hours of highway drudgery & deep woods travel. I do think the DR-650 is a better bike overall & if I ever total or wear out my 06 KLR, I'll replace it with a DR if something better hasn't come out by then.
My 1992 KLR650 wore out, so I bought this 2001 😄
I totaled my 2000 KLR & got a helicopter ride. Replaced it with an '05 KTM 450 because I was scared (at first) to get back on pavement. The KTM made me feel like Super Man in the same woods I used to ride my KLR. I HATE wrenching & missed the long maintenance intervals of the KLR & Off Road land gets harder & harder to find every year. The KTM sat in the garage while I was out ridding the '06 KLR. sold the KTM & still ride the KLR.
@@harryballzaky2674 yikes that's not the good type of helicopter ride. I have 2 KTM's and they are sure are fun to rip around in the woods, but yeah the forever dependable KLR is still great fun as long as you're okay with a slower pace and less extreme terrain. Ride on!
Sold my KLR! Trying to ride a 500 pound cycle on trails was not fun.
Sorry to hear you didn't have fun. I guess we're all a bit different, I have a blast on my KLR!
430 pound cycle & with suspension upgrades & the right set up it can be a hoot.... If your in good physical shape.
Crazy good riding btw! Totally impressed especially after spending so much time on my KLR and seeing the limitations.
Watched all your videos (on the KLR) and am hoping to get into the New Years ride on March 19th and do half as well as you did with my 1st gen bike... how vital was the 14tooth sprocket?
I think the smaller sprocket is a big deal. Makes things alot easier on the clutch hand! I should be out there on 3/19, see you there!
It’s been moved date to April 17th..
Same KLR still up to snuff? Dropped you a message on SBR and was just gonna try and pic some info but I will be at meeting spot on day of ride 👍
Helluva job man, and quick thinking with the sticks to pivot the ATV 👏🏼👏🏼
damn, that was gnarly AF in some parts. I would have thought twice about going for it on my 2nd gen KLR
Hey, nice riding man! Curious, what loop was this? Was it the Mt Patterson long? Again, nice work.
Thanks! I believe we did the "Mt Patterson long", but we skipped out on some of it, as it was getting pretty late (we arrived in Bridgeport very late in the afternoon). From memory and my recorded GPS tracks: It was a clockwise loop starting at lake Topaz, and we did Mt Patterson early in the ride, Belfort, some long gravel roads to get to Bodie, some excellent singletrack leaving Bodie, an old cemetery, Bridgeport, some pavement getting back to Topaz. Lots of great trails and some of it pretty challenging (on the big bike)
Watching you try to lift the quad in every wrong way possible was the hardest part to watch... fucks sake... push it the downhill direction!!!!
When did the KTM 300 appear? Been thinking about that or the Beta 200RR.
Yo Peter! I've had the 300 for about 14 months, loving it! A buddy just bought a new 200rr (and it has lots of extra goodies). It seems like an awesome bike, too! (I have some good video with him riding it, been meaning to share). You should bring one of those bikes down here so we can ride again!
What gearing you running
It's 1 tooth smaller in the front from stock (I can't remember what stock is right now)
Nice to see a KLR out there!
Wow! You are amazing! I worked there from Feb 2014 to Dec 2014 and I can't tell you how many times this EXACT scenario would happen. NEVER RIDE ALONE, and if you do, tell someone where you plan to ride! That's over 28 miles of trails to search if someone goes missing!! It's incredibly scary to think how long he could've been out there before you noticed him. In these situations it's always good to try to flag down another rider and have them ride down to the kiosk or find the closest employee to have them radio for help!!
Wheres the ohv area in Georgetown

Thanks imgur for sending me here to see this.
1st Step: Call 911. Good Job man, You're a hero.
Getting it up on a log or two was a good idea. But I do understand his need to get the heck out. I hope neither of you suffered lasting damage!
I saw you grab some branches to make a lever, but then you didnt make a lever. What happened?
I did not grab the branches for a lever, he was supposed to wedge the branches under the ATV as I lifted it a few inches to relieve the pressure on him. He decided to just go for it as I lifted the thing a little bit.
Should not try to lift off the weight
At 5:08 I ended up going right and realized I went the wrong way so I turned around...good on you for finding a way up via the right!
Yeah, I stopped and almost turned around, too because I thought I might be going the wrong way, but since there was a rider right behind me I motored on. I also didn't see any "W", so I felt a little better. That could have gone terribly wrong, glad it didn't! I hate back tracking!
Nice ride! Thanks for posting.
Thanks!
Ok great!
The steel framed bike are the best enduro bikes! You don’t jet jarred as much!
What year is your bike?
this is my 2004 YZ250 that I've had about 5 years now (this bike is not going to get used much anymore, as I picked up a 2015 KTM 300XC a few weeks ago. I needed the electric start!)
Where did you ride this day a wow dose your bike sound good no hesitation but electric smooth
Sorry, that info is top secret! Only thing I I can tell you it is the private property of a friend in the Santa Cruz mountains
Wow. Having a bad back is serious, very good thing you didn't hurt yourself. I'm in my mid 20s but I am an amputee and I'm not sure if I'd feel safe having to lift a heavy quad. I generally carry a recovery kit though, but yeah dang, tough situation for sure.
Thanks for the comments. After having broken two vertebrae (sledding accident) and having herniated the disks in my back a few times, I was pretty worried about injuring my back again with this lift, it was heavy! (I think I remember looking up this model of quad to be over 750lbs). Just a few days ago was the first time since then I came face to face with one of these big quads (a 700lb "tracker" on the showroom floor of a Cabelas store). I tried to lift the front end using the convenient front bumper standing on nice flat ground. Nope. Didn't budge. (I can't imagine anyone missing a limb lifting this thing, that would be beyond studly)
Awesome!
Where is the enduro track in hollister, it looks like a hidden area
not sure which area you mean. The video shows clips of many areas on a 31 mile ride. One of the spots is the "obstracross" track (sort of like an endurocross track) which is in the same area as the Lodge MX track. Another area is the Trials area, which is at the bottom of Long Canyon trail. These aren't hidden at all, but some of the other spots in the video might be hard to find
Was that Cody Webb ? Wow, that looks tough!
You mean that guy blitzing around on that KTM with the number 1 on the plate? It did kinda look like him. And he was kinda amazing to watch. Hmmm... you should ask him his name next time ;-)
What gearing are you running in your YZ250?
When I bought the bike almost 5 years ago, it had 15/42 (+2 teeth over stock in back), and i've been running it ever since. Never felt the need to change it, and the chain and sprockets still haven't worn out! I wouldn't mind trying stock gearing, or +1, but not worth my time and money to mess with it.
Wow that is geared pretty tall since stock is 14/50. Mine is set up for trail riding as well with fly wheel weight and 18 inch rear wheel. When I bought mine used it came with 14/48 and I never changed it either. Only makes it 4% taller from factory since they say changing the front one tooth is about 7.2% ratio change and one tooth on rear is only 2%. Stock gearing I think would be fine I just wish they were 6 speeds. or at least a taller 5th like the newer YZ250x models.
I am guessing you meant 14/52
@@race2race1 oops! you are right 14/52. my memory failed me on the walk from my garage to the computer! The other thing I added was a wide ratio transmission (oem yamaha stuff, purchased through rocky mountain). It doesn't change 1st or 2nd, but does make 4th and 5th taller (I think it said 3rd was shorter). I wouldn't have spent all that money if it wasn't for my 4th and 5th gears being roached sometime after I bought the bike (5th was totally unusable), so as long as i'm replacing gears...
Cool thanks for the information I appreciate it.
Great Race! What have you done to your yz (flywheel weight, 18" rear wheel, gearing, etc..)?
Thanks! I bought the YZ about 4 or 5 years ago and it had the larger tank, 9oz flywheel weight, +2 teeth on rear sprocket, and a skid plate. I've slowly added an 18" rear wheel, v-force reeds, a magura hydraulic clutch, 4th and 5th gear were roached, so I replaced with a wide ratio gear set. I think that's it. Wish I could put an E-start on it!
Nice riding. Was curious if your yz250 and CRF250X are running a Recluse auto style clutch.
Thanks! No, neither of my bikes have recluse. The CRF250x is all stock except for the lever which has more adjustability, and on my YZ I installed a Magura hydraulic unit (unfortunately, it only reduced the lever pull by maybe 5%? ) I look forward to some day getting a modern bike with a proper hydraulic clutch! But I don't think I will ever get a recluse (especially when I have an electric starter)
Ok thanks just thought they might of had one from the way they sound in some of the videos. I have a 07 Yz250 and a 07 cfr450x as well. I don't think I would like the recluse either. Maybe in another 10 or 15 years when I am in my 60s then all probably think about one LOL.
I hit that trail at 2 min on Sunday man, you make it look easy lol
Thanks! It's a short but very challenging trail. For me this time the hardest part was lifting the damn bike pretty much overhead! (The week before it was cutting that fallen tree out of the way.)
Nice job.
Thanks!
Great video Anyone who wins by 26 minutes should be automatically advanced to the “A’s” , just to give the other guys a chance. Thanks for posting it.
haha funny Steve! You know i'm not fast, just too stubborn to give up. I plan to stay right here with the B's where you can't kick my butt anymore!
Great video. Good to see a B rider’s lines.
Thanks! (but I hope nobody's trying to learn anything from my lines, i'm actually a pretty slow B rider!)
Good video. Thank you. Challenging stuff. Many don't run a trials tire. I do & I bet it would help at least on those rocks. Mind if I share to Facebook?
Thanks! I do wonder if a trials tire would do okay in all the silt ruts, though, does it do ok? Donner is the only place i've ridden silt filled ruts, and only with a knobby. Is sharing in facebook just a link? That would be fine, I don't ever visit facebook so I don't know. Thanks for asking
@@OnTo1Wheel I haven't ridden in silt that bad often but I ride through soft snow. I've used a trials tire about 8 years now. Superb grip on hardpack/rocks & fine elsewhere. I'd say throttle control effects traction on steep hills either way. my 13/52 KDX will go up most stuff besides a super steep gravelly hill requiring 250/300 power. Thanks. Yeah, sharing to facebook is just a video screenshot & link to this video. I was going to share to a couple specific groups like Nevada County Woods Riders & Nor Cal OHV. 🖒
@@slyrbaby I did see a few trials tires in this race, but given the number of loose hills, it would have suffered on those. (And yeah, sharing is fine, thanks!)
@@OnTo1Wheel Righto. If you ride Foresthill, just a heads up, theres a ride & work thing on T5 on Nov17th at 830am for a few hrs. Edit: thanks, shared a link to your video on FB to Nor Cal OHV & NCWR.
@@slyrbaby thanks for the heads up! Wish I could have made it out for that, Foresthill is a blast! I like helping out when possible, too
That's Metcalf. Rode my 150f on that course too, but not nearly so elegrantly. Feeling inspires.
A great ride, by a great rider, on a great bike. I rode an '05 YZ for years. Good job.
Rippin!
Thanks! I just didn't want to stop! So much fun
Nice!
Nice video! Looks tough!
thx!
How would you rate the difficulty?
thats pretty hard to answer as everybody has there own idea of what difficult might be. (Graham Jarvis, for instance, would call this trail trail easy!) The whole trail only took less than 12 minutes, and we were not pushing hard. There are no ledges over 12 inches. But there are many ledges, and many tight switch-backs. I'd probably call it a tough "intermediate" trail, or maybe and easy "expert" trail. I love this trail: I find it a little bit challenging and very picturesque! (I've only had the chance to ride it twice so far)
Great job that trail looks amazing...
Thanks! This trail IS amazing, I highly recommend
I like your videos dude and i mostly liked the video where u saved the guy from that 4x4 keep up the good work!
