Parts Identification - Slip Joint Drainage
In this video, Plumber-Tom explains slip joint or tubular drainage connections. These are commonly used below sinks to connect the fixture drain to the drainage system in the building. Slip joint p-traps, extension tail pieces, continuous waste kits and other fittings make connecting drains possible.

Expansion Tank Support - Proper Installation for Expansion Tanks

In this video Plumber-Tom explains and demonstrates how an expansion tank should be installed with proper support. For many years expansion tanks have been installed and supported by the piping that they are connected to. Checking Water System Pressure

Do you know how you can check the pressure of your potable water system? System pressures inside of potable water systems are required to be below 80 psi according to code. Pressure reducing valves can maintain pressures at a safe range, but they do fail over time and have to be replaced. Let’s have a look at a few ways you can check your system pressure if you don’t have a gauge built into the...

    That video is great. I personally had to struggle a lot to figure out which part was meant for what when I bought slip joint parts for the first time, and even ordered some wrong parts that did not fit together. I wish this kind of connection were more common here in Brazil.

    The final product looks like the flange is flush with the vinyl floor. I’ve always been taught the flange is supposed to sit on top of the finished floor. Is there any difference?

    Thanks for the video, Tom. For the most part, I think you did a good job and made some good points gave a lot of good tips, but you can certainly get enough (even a lot) primer on the pipe and fittings while still being neat with it. Not saying you didn’t do this, but I didn’t see you chamfer one piece of pipe. So many plumbers blow this off as not necessary, but I disagree, just as all pipe and fitting manufacturers would. Also, you are putting too much faith in the plastic strap, especially where you have used it to support horizontal pipe centered between joists - a block would be much better. Plastic strap is, well, plastic, so it stretches over time - especially in the attic where it will be subject to high temperatures. I have seen this happen, and repaired it, many times over the years - I have had to fix bellies in ceilings, basements/crawl spaces and attics due to the Plasticity/stretching of this strap. Don’t get me wrong - I use it all of the time because it does have its place for strapping pipe when used correctly, but I am careful to not use it in the situations I have mentioned. I use a lot of metal strap and a lot of stove bolts in residential rough ins instead of using my plastic strap where it is impractical or impossible to block a pipe. I know a lot of rough in plumbers do it just the way you did, but most of those plumbers have never gotten into the service realm of plumbing, so they have never seen what happens years later. I did new residential plumbing for the first 21 years of my career and switched over to (mostly) residential service for the next 15 years, then switched over to, and am still doing new commercial and industrial plumbing, so I have pretty much seen it all. I know that what we all think is good now doesn’t necessarily end up being such a good idea in the future.

    Why not put a the backwater valve / Cleanout at the main line outside of the house and close to the street to avoid the whole house having any issue whatsoever.

    • @plumber-tom9470
      @plumber-tom9470 24 дні тому

      Great idea. The problem is accessibility. The sewer in many places is so deep that an additional manhole would be required to access the valve. That is why it is most often installed inside the building. Also, fixtures that are not below the next upstream manhole in the street are not required to pass through the back water valve. If the valve were installed outside the building it would require a separate building drain, which is not ideal.

    1:37 “If I know my [water system pressure] is at 66 psi, I should fill up the air chamber to 65 psi” What “water system pressure” is this referring to? I’ve seen videos saying you should measure the pressure using an outside bib. But both ChatGPT and an HVAC person I spoke to say that the pressure you should set the expansion tank to is the cold water pressure of the boiler system, not the water system of the house. This means the tank should be set to anywhere between 12-15 psi, not 50-60+ which is what an outside faucet would be. So I’m confused. Which one is it?

    • @plumber-tom9470
      @plumber-tom9470 28 днів тому

      The "water system" referred to in this video is the potable water system. Boilers are a separate system that operate at a lower pressure. So the HVAC person was correct for the expansion tank for the boiler system. But you should have a separate system and tank for that. The expansion tank for your potable hot water should be pressurized to the pressure of the system delivering water to your fixtures. I don't trust ChatGPT for plumbing information. It pulls information from people who don't know what they are talking about.

    • @jc_alpha
      @jc_alpha 28 днів тому

      @@plumber-tom9470Thanks for the reply. I have a boiler and the expansion tank is attached to one of the pipes near it. I replaced the tank and set its pressure to match that of an outside bib, but now I realize I was way off. None of the videos I’ve watched make the distinction between the two types of tanks/systems, so it’s a bit confusing. Thanks again for clearing that up. I just set mine to 15psi.

    Day after christmas two years ago, I got a call from my wife at work stating that water was leaking down from the ceiling in our bathroom; our 2nd floor bathroom is right above our master bathroom. I called the plumber and he was PO'ed b/c he said that the flange extender on it was all wrong; house was built in 2007 and we bought it in 2019. We had our insurance people come out and take a look and they fixed everything, but the subfloor had rotted out. Most likely, during building, the flange had been cut flush with the subfloor and then when the tile people finished, the plumber came back and installed the toilet but then had to install the extender to make it sit right and eventually that failed. As things were finishing up on the repairs, I thought to myself, "well, if they installed that one wrong, what about the others...?" So I had the plumbers pull all the other toilets (three on the 1st floor) and all three were the same way. Our master toilet's subfloor was completely gone and the toilet was only being up the tile! I had them repair everything and then had the plumber cut the pipe way high. Then when the tile floor was done, I had them cut the pipe to the floor and then install the flange on top of the finished floor, as you're supposed to!

    • @plumber-tom9470
      @plumber-tom9470 28 днів тому

      Good question. P-Traps that are hidden in walls, floors or ceilings should be glue traps because they are not accessible. Slip Joint P-Traps should only be used in places where they can be accessed. The P-Trap for a washer box is inside the wall so it should be glued.

    Hello, how is the flap attached to main body? Will it stay in place in a severely overcharged sewer system from torrential rain. I saw a Oatey brand, and it looked like the flap could be lifted easily up and off. Didn't seem like a good design ,if I am actually seeing it correctly. Thanks

    • @plumber-tom9470
      @plumber-tom9470 28 днів тому

      Some of the models can be lifted out of place, which is a problem. Some manufacturers have improved their design and connected the flap to a ring so it cannot come out of place.

      Thanks, my existing valve, is longer than the ones I am seeing advertised on line. Right now there are 4" long fernco black coupling with steel clamps. Since a newer shorter valve would replace it, is it acceptable to only have a inch overlap of fernco on both ends of fernco? Or would I have to figure out something like a PVC connector inside valve to extend length? Thanks

    • @atkgrl
      @atkgrl 24 дні тому

      The Oatey flap only comes out of place when the screw top is off which is what secures it in place.
