  • The term fitting allowance refers to the amount of space that is taken up by a fitting which must be deducted from the center-to-center measurement in order to cut the correct length of pipe. Does that make sense? Well, in this video, Plumber-Tom makes it much more clear by illustrating what a fitting allowance is, and how to do the math to get the right length to cut your pipe.

Your videos are really helpful. Thank you! I’m taking courses at my local community college to get a certificate in plumbing, but none of the classes have any actual lecture/teaching time. You basically are supposed to just read each chapter, then answer the chapter questions, then schedule lab time to go and do the project described in the chapter. Your videos are really helping me make sense of all this. Thank you so much!!!

I'm glad you find these videos useful. I have taught plumbing at a local technical college since 2008. I went through an apprenticeship myself as well. So I understand the deficiency in plumbing education. Sometimes it is really frustrating because plumbers are not always great teachers. But I have focussed on making plumbing education better than what I had when I went through. I am glad you find these videos useful.

How would you do a fitting allowance on a union?

Good question. I would measure the overall and then subtract how far the pipe goes in each side of the union. That should give the fitting allowance.

    Hi,
I'm going through a career change and taking up plumbing at my local community college. I'll be honest, I'm struggling on the field with fitting allowances. In theory, I do fine, but on the field I struggle figuring out what exactly is the center to end on say a 90 or 45 elbow. A tee is fine, but it's the elbows that get me. Maybe my eyesight is messing with me due to age, but what the measuring tape tells me never seems to be in alignment with what my instructor grades. Is there technology or tools available that can help me find where exactly is the center line of an elbow?
I've done many DIY projects at home and I've always struggled with measuring. You can forget eyeballing, I can spend hours going over measurements, put everything up, all but for it to obviously be too high, or too low, etc. If I don't stand directly, bird's eye view over the tape, I'll get it wrong. It's ridiculous, as sometimes considering the space you can't always look directly overhead at a tape measurement.

Hang in there. I don’t know if any technology that simplifies fitting allowance take offs. But I do know that manufacturers produce spec books with all the details for their fittings. That is a good place to start.

@@plumber-tom9470 We have great spec books at the college. I have two of them - they work fine for the most part and give you a general idea. Unfortunately, they would work best back in say the 1960's when China didn't manufacture everything.

I see. Probably depends on the manufacturer, but I know some of them like Charlotte Pipe have up to date specs. @@MegaAvalonn
