Christie House: An Enriched Life

The persistence of original owner Lucille Christie enabled the construction of the Christie House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. This video, produced by current Christie House owner Genevieve Castelino, delves into the correspondence between Lucille and Wright in the 1940s and illustrates the results of Lucille's efforts with contemporary footage of the house. Just amazing. Thank you for taking the time to make such a wonderful video.
What a magnificent house!!!❤
If I want my house to be "enduring," I would not want it built basically on a beach.
I love the petina from the roof.
Best beach house ever ! I notice the copper roof seams are horizontal not vertical like most metal roofs. Horizontal looks better. The seams must trap some water behind them. Maybe not an issue in California
What in the world are those small awful looking pillows doing on the beautiful couch? Also, the added island in the middle of the gravel looks odd there.
This may be my favorite tour of a FLW house I have ever seen. Was no detail ever over-looked by Wright, lol. And what a gorgeous setting. I was just going to gush about how nice it was to see the home still in the family, lovingly kept and cherished, when reading the comments I see it has been sold. Now I am sad about it.
Great video. I love the maritime and Japanese influences and the materials used. I suppose that all challenging new designs have compromises though, I was shocked that the expensive stone prow of the house had to be completely replaced after less than seventy years! Is that going to need to be replaced every sixty years? The bedrooms are almost unusably tiny, the master bedroom having to be extended within a few years of completion to accommodate two people! Really? I love the look of the crazy fireplace, but it seems almost unusable to me. A very interesting building but more of an artwork than a comfortable house, don’t you think?
Loggia is pronounced laa-je-uh... or as it's spelt.
Lame, dated and ugly, i.e. modernist.
Frank LLoyd Wright Homes where very expensive. $$$$ 5 to 10 times the average for the day.
Back to the 50's, Revere Ware Cooper bottom pots.
How fabulous. Thank you.
The sad thing is it’s sold last year to a real estate developer for 22 million I hope he doesn’t do anything to it but knowing how these people don’t respect our old things and our old beautiful homes designed by incredible people they’ll probably tear it down or remodel the kitchen and make it more modern and wreck everything in it….
I particularly appreciate this fine presentation for several personal reasons. I studied at Taliesin West in my day. I also was friends with Tisa Penfield, an art student in Ohio. Her father, Lou Penfield, had been a student friend of Wright in their college days. Mr. Penfield was well over six feet tall, and the tallest person Wright had ever designed for. As a result, the home he designed for a wedding present had visual orientation far more verticle than most Wright homes, and if you have ever seen it, is startling in contrast to most of Wright's other work. Penfield House can still be toured, and i believe, in its preservation, is also available for events and such back in Ohio. It is well worth seeking out!
What a wonderful tour and video of this home. I love FFW & to be able to be taken through one of his incredible buildings by a direct member of the family it was built for & knowing it's be lived in, used & loved so very much every day of its life is the most endearing things about this house, it truly is a home. I believe FFW would be most pleased by it, knowing it's been unmodified, unchanged, unmolested in almost every way & treasured beyond imaging would definitely please him, although I'm sure he would be grumbling about it whilst secretly happy inside. Picture him seeing it now and walking through it and around it, pointing out all the things that he was correct about & complaining about the changes but probably having to agree with the decisions. Sometimes it's a shame that the people who design these beautiful amazing pieces of architecture never had the pleasure of seeing how their buildings or gardens or works of art (whatever you prefer to call them) are still so much a part of our lives & our world. The very fact that so many don't need to change or be modernised to be lasting and livable is a testament to the underlying genius of those artists. I also imagine FFW would be very happy walking about & saying "You see I was right!!" seeing the movement towards the tiny house movement and the less is more, the simple is beautiful and it's the details that matter... it's what makes the overall design complete. Somehow I do agree with him and generally always have. A work that doesn't age is the epitome of perfect art for me, even if it's a farmhouse or a painting, sculpture, kitchen or phone nook it's the details that last ❤ Thank you so much for this ❤❤❤
Those cypress trees, planted by Della, really got big and beautiful. Nice of you to put openings in them for the neighbors.
I loved the Movie A Summer Place! It was the girst Afult Themed Movie I ever saw! A good theme yo show that Whatcwas happening with the Dexual Revolution had not been New to the 1960s. Affairs had gone on for centuries. But weith the Victorians ,"love&Sex" became judged and Ostracized to the point of down ng family members . Rificulous. How fo Prudes about Secual vinfuct think THEY got Here Beautiful House! Loved the Movie.,
Absolutely loved this tour and I loved first seeing this in one of my favorite films a summer’s place Thank you for this tour. You did a wonderful job.
The video should show the building plan. It would also have helped to show the two site plans (original Wright and the later reposition). Not sure if the remote presentation was the way to display the house.
I am a year late with comment.....lol wow!!!!! just wow... spell bound with the tour... so enjoyable...
This guy is amazing, you can just tell he has so much love and passion for this piece of art. Thank you for sharing so many details ❤
THIS HOME EMITS A FEELING OF PEACE IN A SETTING UNDUPLICATED IN MY LIFE. WRIGHT MUST HAVE GAINED INSPIRATION FROM DELLA’S LETTER OF INTRODUCTION. YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF AN INCREDIBLE FAMILY FULL OF ART APPRECIATIVE INDIVIDUALS.THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST HOME TOURS I HAVE WITNESSED EXCELLENTLY FILMED FLOWS MARVELOUSLY.YOU HAVE BEEN AN INCREDIBLE HOST
This house and landscaping is breathtaking ❤
It saddens me that the family sold this property in 2023.
It's a beautiful house and I've been inside a couple of Lloyd wright houses and they tend to be a bit pokey but I would love one anyway
Thanks so much for this interesting guide Sir ❤
Typical F.L. Wright home, not always functional, but always Dramatic, pretty, expensive , and Thought provoking !
This is my favourite of his designs. This place just croons, "home" to me. I love it.
Frank Lloyd Wright put so much of his heart into the buildings he crafted. It is so awe inspiring to see these buildings in the American landscape.Web love you Frank Lloyd Wright.
I dont really care for this one because of how close it is to the water and that was a pretty big fail on the retaining wall
😢
Did Dorothy Hart Hearst love to go to Carmel I love Carmel and I work with Clint Eastwood and we all know he was the mayor of Carmel and own a restaurant there too 😮😮😮😅🎉
Highly annoying, cheesy, and distracting background music.
Of what material are those Japanese "fishing balls" made of?? They look to be of glass.... but how could those have survived the long bobbing surf across the Pacific Ocean??
Sir, you are the very best to guide that FLLW house..Tx a million being so personal & detailed, especially to us wanting to learn about the GENIUS FLLW. Bosse Lindström a long term student of FLLW.
WOW. Great tour. Loved the low shower head story. The living room has been the lock screen on my iphone for years. Heard it was sold Feb 2023 for 22 million. So I guess the dream of someday seeing it at the Carmel Heritage tour is over.
Fascinating! Thank you for the history, stories and sharing your beautiful home.
That was just a pleasure. So nicely done. Thank you.
Well done, lad !!!!!!!
This has always been one of my 2-3 favorite Wright houses. It's a real pleasure to see the house in the hands of people who are caring for it so well.
Hey really did like the "Cherokee Red". I now notice it in almost all of his houses.
I loved the video!
I've seen a number of videos of FLW's houses and am, of course, impressed with all the great design decisions that he made and the beauty of the finished product. But I'm not sure that I'd want to live in one. They are like living on a boat - one has to leave most of one's possessions and personal items behind and assume the personality that FLW has assigned you. Like on a boat where everything is fixed in place, there is no opportunity for individuality. Fixed location of built-in sofas, tables, cabinets - no room for a table or chair that might be special to the owner. I'm expecting some hate mail responses to my criticism of the great FLW, but in my opinion, these houses are mostly incredibly beautiful art pieces that can be lived in if one is flexible enough to accept the inflexibility. A boat can travel and provide the opportunity for new adventures and scenery. The disadvantage of living on a boat that never moves is a certain stagnancy or sameness that seems confining, at least, it does to me.
For $18,000 a square foot a bit pricy for one person living.
FLW was great on recessed lighting. Hard to see in the home.
22 million a bit much. But that is California. Hope they can pay the taxes to live there. I would choose Alaska.
Giant couch sucks. Kid needs to hire a professional decorator.
Landscaping needs to go. Does not improve the house.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful personal story of your family and the iconic walker house. I’ve admired this house for years even as a child walking on the beach below. I have heard that the house recently sold. I’m very surprised you would have sold the house.
