I Broke a DT Swiss Hugi 240 Rear Hub!
Переглядів 1,3 тис.5 років тому
I was out for a ride when suddenly, my back hub split. This hub is eighteen years old. This is the second wheelset that the hubs had been laced into. Since the Stan's Alpha 240 Rims, Dt Spokes and alloy nipples held strong over the five years they have been laced to these hubs, I am certain that the wheels had been built and maintained well. The many miles, years, and stress cycles have finally...
Redshift Shockstop Suspension Stem Review Part 2 : In Summary

You can get your own shockstop stem from Redshift Sports. redshiftsports.com/stem One thing that is not in the instructions, but that I have since done is to lubricate the elastomers using a product called Buzzy's Slick Honey. I ordered one from Amazon and got the package and a stone in it. The reply was very quick, and they sent an actual stem this time, but clearly the Amazon warehouses don’t check the returned stuff. So it’s not as much a problem with Redshift as with Amazon.

      I think the old DT/Hugi 240 hubs were designed and built with so much emphasis on weight saving, that long term durability may have been sacrificed. I can't really speak for the newer DT Swiss 240S models, as I have never owned one. In Dt/Hugi's defense, I did use that hub for over twenty years, and it's been laced to two different rims in that time. I'm also significantly heavier than I was twenty years ago. Hah hah! I have since re-laced that rim to a new DT Swiss 350 hub, and it's still rocking and rolling along! Cheers!

    What were the initial too firm elastomer settings, the too soft, and your preferred choice?

    • @user-qr4zu1hb4o
      @user-qr4zu1hb4o Рік тому

      Duh, further thoughts from an idle mind. Part 1 indicates the initial 'firm' setting was an 80/50 combination. That suggests the second 'soft' attempt was a 70/60, which further suggests you might have settled on 70/70 as best working for you. Right? Apparently, the nominal numbers are not indicative of the resistance value of the individual elastomers, nor are the values linear, or 80+50=130 would feel a lot like 70+60=130 and both would feel softer than 70+70=140.

    You edited out the most important and troubling part, which is inserting the stopper into the stem under the elastomers. I've been trying to insert it into the stem independent from the bike, holding it in my hands, but the screw doesn't line up with the hole for some reason. It seems there needs to be some weight put on top of it in order to squash it down to get it centered to align the screw with the hole. I notice at 10:30 yours looks cracked on the bottom maybe due to blunt force? Did you hammer it in? I guess what I'm going to have to do is install it on the bike first then push down on it as the weight of my hand and body weight may align things up.

      @prestachuck2867 2 роки тому

      Not cracked. Just lightly coated with Buzzy’s Slik Honey lubricant, then slid right into place with only fingertip pressure. No trouble or hassle at all. It’s still working perfectly today. Perhaps your stem has a defect. Contact the manufacturer.

      Instructions state you must install in situ, so you can do just this, apply downward pressure so bolt lines up. It says you must not try to install off the bike!

    I rebuilt the wheel with a new DT Swiss 350 hub. I’ve gotten over twenty years and many thousands of miles out of that old Hugi 240s. The model 350 is a touch heavier, but it’s also more robust. It will probably never need to be replaced.

    Would never have thought Girvin FlexStem idea to catch on to this day. Couple of friends of mine used to change theirs quite often so I thought this would just be one of those mtb fads that would die.. good to see Redshift apply this more appropriately on road/gravel bikes.

    Yes! Just ordered my stem & seatpost. I'm recovering from being struck by a vehicle back in April 2021, while going to a group ride early morning. But when doctors clear me again to bike ride. I'm using these to ease into riding my roadbikes again, since my arm and leg can't heldle road shock just yet since I had titaniumin arm and a bone graft in fractured leg. Really appreciate redshift team made these and right when I need them to recover the most! Many thanks!

    A lovely handlebar. Is that the Specialized AeroFly? Or a Hover? I like the AeroFly more than the v.2.: just as sporty, but more accommodating to older, overweight or simply more inflexible riders. How do you like the ShockStop? I just installed one, but won't be riding until it stops raining (it will for a few days, apparently).

      Leo_inter_Hyaenaem No offense taken. It is one more tool at the disposal of bike fitters, and it’s a very nice handlebar to boot!
