Quetico Falls Chain Flood - June 7, 2022
This is an excerpt from a 3 week trip to Quetico in late May and early June of 2022 making my way to the Falls Chain for the first time. Water levels were quite high and at historic levels in many areas. I came in from Wet Lake and travelled upstream through Bald Rock Fall to the first Four Falls portage. I had originally planned to go all the way to Saganagons Lake and spend a night, but with the water so high I was a bit nervous and decided to turn downstream to make sure I could get to Kawnipi Lake.

Welcome Back! Here it is, after a huge delay, the 4th and final episode of my 2016 canoe trip through Quetico Provincial Park. I begin this episode by re-tracing my route through the B-chain to Spend a night on Pickerel Lake. From there, I head west through Pickerel Narrows to Batchewaung Lake and spend the night, then carry on the next day to finish my trip at the Nym Lake access point. Enjoy!
Wolves vs. Elk in Yellowstone

We heard a splash in the river next to our campsite and decided to have a look. Coming from just upstream was an elk swimming in the river and 4 wolves, two on each side. The video tells the story. Eventually they all got a little too close to us and we had to move from behind a tree. The wolves saw us and immediately disengaged. I don't believe the elk ever saw us.

I did an 11 day trip to Quetico Provincial Park in northern Ontario for a solo canoe trip in 2016. This trip was on the heels of another longer trip south of the border, so I decided to take it somewhat easy, not travelling too far each day. I paddled a figure 8 loop starting at Stanton Bay on Pickerel Lake travelling south venturing as far as Sark Lake. I made my way back north eventually retr...

In part 4, I make my way south on Kenoji Lake and find a good campsite near the Ogoki River inflow. The next day I make my way up the series of portages on the Ogoki River to Wabakimi Lake, then find a good camp on Lower Wabakimi Lake. Realizing I still have plenty of time on this trip, I take it easy and travel downstream a short distance from Lower Wabakimi Lake and find another wonderful cam...

I made my way to Wabakimi Provincial Park in northern Ontario for a solo canoe trip in 2017. I found easy drive up access to the park and surrounding crown lands from the small town of Armstrong. I spent 15 days out, paddling a big loop to the north through large and small lakes and all kinds of weather conditions. The portages and fishing were great, and I went 12 days without seeing another p...

I made my way to Wabakimi Provincial Park in northern Ontario for a solo canoe trip in 2017. It seems that most people fly in or use the train to access this vast area, but I found easy drive up access to the park and surrounding crown lands from the small town of Armstrong. Three of us paddled from Toston to Townsend, Montana on a spectacular December day to check on reports of trash in the river from construction of the new 287 bridge below Toston. Norm Miller and Jim Emmanuel and myself had a fleet of decked canoes including a Kruger Sea Wind, a wood Sea Wind and a Clipper Sea 1. We were able to get a few bags of mostly plastic water bottles in the first mile be...
Breakneck Bear

We hiked into Breakneck meadows in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in mid-June for a couple nights. A few miles upstream from Breakneck Meadow we ran into this big fellow. From a distance we thought he was a griz because of the color, but we quickly realized he's a black bear, and a big one.
