    All so beautiful, thank you. Time alone in my canoe is some of my favorite, even a few hours is so great.

    Great for us to collect info on potential roots - we appreciate you sharing map locations of sites so we can add to our gps database. Nice to know where good sites are in case of weather emergencies, etc. Also you made us think about the use of a shuttle to put in and takeout at separate locations.

    Dogbrain, it seems that if you use that much oil to deep fry the fish, you must be recollecting and using it later. Is that true? What oil do you use?

    Dogbrain, how did you edit the maps with the red lines, and camp 1 into the video?

    loved this...... just wow! heading there for my first solo this September just wondering if it was crowded or how many campsites were full when you were there?

    I followed you through most of those lakes in 2017, that site on McDougall was my goal for the trip, and I spent 3 nights there before working my way back. That trip is still my favorite, 9 days solo and my first trip to Quetico.

      I followed your journey too gymcoachdon. I first visited this McDougall site in 2001 and just returned this past summer. Caught four lake trout in an hour in 2001 but only enormous smallmouth in 2020. What were you cooking up Dogbrain? No skin so I'm thinking bass?

    • @fefdom
      @fefdom  3 роки тому

      Yes, Bass. There are some big ones in there. It was difficult to catch one that i consider eating size. I've only fished for bass on McDougall, but it's good to know about the trout.

    Nice trip, I had the chance to paddle some of the lakes you covered in this episode. The wind was always an issue.

    Красиво. Тоже летом путешествовал по рекам на каноэ из фанеры, что сам построил. Сейчас строю похожее из рейки к сезону. Какого размера ваша лодка длина ширина? Спасибо

    Great video. I wish you had some more shots of the kite. Tell us about it and show how it paddles. I know this is a hassle when you don't have a cameraperson on land, I'm just wishing. Thanks.

      Thanks. The canoe is in a bunch of my videos, but you're right, no good paddling footage. The Kite is a great seaworthy design with just a few issues. As with most solo canoes, the Kite suffers from broaching with following seas. My spare paddle is a long blade ottertail design which allows me to reach back and keep the canoe straight in those situations. Also, the canoe over steers when you remove the paddle from the water, especially when it's not trimmed to be heavy in the back. This is very frustrating when trying to photograph or fish. It's really good in big waves though, and handles well in rivers. It's a very stable boat with quick acceleration.

      @@fefdom Thanks Dogbrain. Yes I've read a bunch about the Kite since I posted that comment. Infact I've started my build! Strongback is done. Strips are done. I'm using Scandinavian spruce (picea abies). Just got the stations printed out today and am glueing the prints to the particle board to cut them out. I will bend the bow and stern laminations but then I will take a break until April or May before starting to strip. The broaching is the biggest, and perhaps only, complaint I've heard about the Kite. I am suspecting that this could be bettered, perhaps by tweaking the rocker. I'm not going to tweak anything on this one though. Thanks again.

      @@Thestripper1 You'll certainly enjoy the boat once you get to use it. No canoe design is perfect, but the Kite does many things well. I used our native Englemann Spruce (picea engelmannii) for all or part of my last four canoe builds. These were all mostly my own designs, but the boards I get are almost as light as western red cedar but not as brittle. Good luck

    • @Thestripper1

      @@markdixon9392 Hi Mark. Thanks for the encouragement. Yeah I think the Kite will be a great boat for me. I managed to find some good boards with only few and small knots in them. The picea abies is certainly lighter than red cedar and supposedly stronger too. The recomendation is to go one mm thinner when using it instead of cedar. I've ripped my strips to 5 mm. Could have gone thinner but will probably go with a lighter 4 oz instead of 6. Do you have any video of your Kite?
