Healthy Home Guide
United States
Приєднався 18 гру 2022
Hi, I’m Alex. I believe that everyone deserves to live in a home with fresh, clean air. Even renters, or those without ducted HVAC systems. I share practical, budget-friendly (yet effective) tips for creating a safe and healthy home, whether the word "home" refers to your house or your body.
My life path has pushed me to learn about many topics, from building science and indoor air quality to personal growth and healing. I have an innate tendency to meticulously test strategies for improving my quality of life, and have had to do so mostly out of necessity.
What qualifies me to speak about indoor air quality and building science?
1.) I myself have been severely chronically ill from toxic mold exposure. It's become my mission to help ensure that what happened to me does not happen to others.
2.) I'm a translational scientist in the medical field. That means that it's my job to translate science into practice. Every day I read research studies and interpret their implications.

Dust Can Affect Our Hormones Now!?
Discover the hidden truths about household dust and its impact on your health in today's eye-opening video! 🌟 Harvard research reveals that the dust lurking in our homes is not as harmless as it seems-it's hormonally-active, mimicking essential hormones like estrogen and testosterone. This could lead to unexpected hormonal imbalances.
In this video, we dive deep into the science behind how everyday products contribute to the hormone-like activity of indoor dust. We'll explore the findings from Dr. Anna Young's recent study, showing how dust affects human cells, and discuss the roles of chemicals like PBDEs, OPEs, and PFAS.
But don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom! 🌱 I also provide practical tips on how to reduce your exposure to these hidden dangers. Learn why washing your hands regularly, using a HEPA vacuum, and microfiber mopping can make a significant difference in your indoor air quality.

How Healthy is Humidifying REALLY?
Переглядів 1,5 тис.4 місяці тому
When it's cold outside, most people use a humidifier without a second thought. But is it actually safe to humidify? Some people say that as long as you keep your home's relative humidity between 40 and 60%, you'll be okay. From a building science perspective, that recommendation is not only too general, it also can turn your home into a toxic environment in terms of mold growth and mycotoxin ex...

An actual solution for keeping mice out of your car - NOT peppermint oil
The placebo industry will never be deterred by facts, science, and logic, only laws and regulation. What's funny is that the "Corsi-Rosenthal Box" was not some breakthrough invention, but an academic putting his name on something found in wood shops and other dusty workplaces for decades: a fan sucking air past furnace filters. When I lived next to a major highway, I built my own near-hepa ducted filter system that positive pressurized our bedroom, giving us spotless air if the door was closed. Fortunately, we no longer live there, but wildfires remain a serious thing: Two filtrete cubes with fans with in our house during bad air makes all the difference now. My particle sensor shows them clearing the smoke by about 95 percent, to levels inside that are typical of non-wildfire days without them running.
What sensors are u using to measure the air quality currently in the room ?
I love the winter when RH is below 30%. I never considered getting a Humidifier. Now summer when it hits 60%, that's gross.
Alex is a hottie🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I have build CR boxes long before I ever heard of CR boxes. The most dangerous particles are the smallest particles from catalytic converters, air traffic and pesticides 1 -3 nanometer. Our body is not designed to capture these particles, because they did not exist before catalytic converters existed. The best filters for that are the electrostatic charged media filters like car cabin filters or 3M filtrete 2800.
Is Levoit a good brand of air purifier? I have the core 200S.
What's about vox's
Do you have any suggestions for wall mountable air purifiers? I have no available floor space in my room and I have cats that would probably scratch through the filters if they can get to them
Natural selection should get rid of those who need biproducts of plastics to live.
Nice, but how it compares with Central HVAC with large HEPA filter?
I see you put tape around the edges of the air purifier you built. Was the hot glue not working well enough?
Prop 65
You need a pack of cigarettes and a giant roll of toilet paper, California rolls got the biggest carbon footprint.
Great video, thank you for the invaluable info.
nice project!! Have you thought up any ideas for your next version? Maybe a rubber or foam seal around the top where the fan and box meet, I know it's probably not a big issue but would seal any gaps nicely with the weight of the fan or maybe a carbon filter to neutralise odours? Just some ideas, either way thank you for the video and all the research you've done on this! Keep up the great work
It’s funny how my UA-cam recs change as I age
Your video saved me from buying an overpriced filter. Invaluable information.
I got one and they really help with the dust and and pollen and it works exceptionally well.
To keep my 3090 cool I put it in a massive high airflow case. I have 6 intake fans and 4 outflow fans for positive pressure in the case to keep dust from heating up the gpu. The i take fans have fine mesh filters, which I clean regularly to keep airflow high. So you’re saying I accidentally built a great air cleaner?
obviously-single man with hideous taped-together DIY air filter in background explains how slightly-more-expensive better-looking air filter holders with fans are all a scam
I might be over reacting to a recent scare that micro and nano plastics are killing us but dont all those filters shed themselves whatever they are made of and that is really dangerous too? For example, HEPA filters made of fiberglass have been shown to shed about 700 fibers in 6 hours of use. This might be well bellow the limits regulators have put for exposure to fiberglass particles but I am still scared of just buying one. Same thing with MERV 13 filters made from different kinds of plastic fibers. I just want to also limit plastic ingestion and wouldn't want it to backfire. Do you think I am over reacting and I shouldn't worry about the potential risks of those filters? Anyone that could offer helpful insight is very appreciated.
As long as it's filtering out more than it produces I'm ok with it. But I do understand the concern and it's not wrong to worry
Curious if adding more filters to home AC/central heat would do similar, if it's sized appropriately so the unit is running very often (which is how modern AC should be working when sized properly). It would be like having a big whole home CR box, no?
My wife wanted me to buy an air purifier. Me being a pc builder, I immediately thought: I can build this with some pc fans, a case and some filters for way cheaper. Turns out my idea was good al along. I was right! I'm going to send her this video. 😂 Wish me luck.
27:50 Or... a HEPA-crite :p
thank you :)
Good advice. We live in a very old home and use a HEPA vac and microfiber cloths on everything to control the dust. But speaking of healthy buildings, I would love to get your take on what to do about air quality in a college dorm. My daughter is headed to university in the fall. It has dozens of dorms and apartments, both old and new. But the online parent groups all say the same thing no matter which residence hall: Bring an air purifier. They mainly say to do it to relieve the musty odor of living in close quarters with hundreds of other kids whose hygiene is not always the best. But some also think their kids were exposed to more germs that made them sick. My wife bought one of the ones they recommended from Amazon. We tested it in our teenage son's room. It does seem to reduce the "funky odor." But it would be nice to know for certain that whatever purifier we send with our daughter is actually going to do something helpful.
you done the research you have a prototype now do the kick starter and make a business
I very well may. I need some partners though hehe.
Actually, you don't need to measure to find the center of a square, you just need to trace the diagonals, it will be more accurate!😃
Bro didn't take the plastic off his filters. Just unboxed and plugged em in.
Nah, unfortunately I did haha
😅😅😅 Damn it. I've got a small apartment and the Cuckoo HEPA we have seems to be working 🤷🏻♂️
Damn, i didn't know that poor indoor air quality was this dangerous
Yup. Scientists have known this for decades, they're just bad at communicating it.
Dang I can see you struggle with allergies under your eyes. How long have you been dealing with this? Have you been to an allergist?
We have a real need of this in my country but, sadly the import cost of these filters won't make it worth it. As the filters available here are much cheaper in normal air purifiers. And we have some huge ones too. There's a brand coway and their product looks solid. It looks like a box filter the way it's made.
yeah noctua fans will send you broke, get a negative ion gen as well
The lowly PC fan. As for the DIY box, you can do better than a cheapo $20 box fan--as far as efficiency goes. It would prove louder though. Loads of bare fams are available online. You need not spend $1,000s....
I live in a hot/humid area, where most of the particulate pollution is from the outside environment; and NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) blooms EVERY day, late afternoon, and well into the early morning. Carbon filter is the only easy option to help mitigate the NO2 effects, in my experience. Thanks for this video, and inspiring me to try and make my own device. ❤🙏
Man, what do you think about air circulators like boneco f230 for example. Seems like it creates narrow and long air stream compared to wide and short air stream of ordinary air ventilators. I tested it, it really works. Have you tried that?
Interesting, I hadn't heard of that one. I like the idea of a narrow and long air stream. I've been using Dreo fans for circulation and I've been loving them - they create a narrow and long air stream too.
@@HealthyHomeGuide yes, it's the same, just another producer
What i get from a video is that we just need more efficient devices with hepa filters.
Efficiency is difficult to achieve with HEPA. HEPA filters are restrictive to airflow, so you either need a very powerful, energy-sucking fan to pull air through them, or a very large HEPA filter (to reduce pressure drop), which is expensive.
I’ve found my people
Welcome!
Rainbow SRX
I was scammed too. I’m angry too. Adding in my head for the first time how many HEPA purifiers I bought since summer 2020…7 or 8, I think? Ouch) I agree not all hepa filters are scams but yes, I’ve been scammed and wasted so much money. And put our health at risk.
(This was before I learned more about it. But the majority of consumers don’t know this info, and most purifier companies don’t make the info clear or accessible.)
I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my anger. It's my hope that we can arm consumers with the knowledge they need to stop creating the demand for these terrible air purifiers.
This is great. I already have an array of 6 120mm fans for my watercooling setup (2 radiators of 3 fans each). The idea that I could use these as outflow fans for a MERV based air filter is just great. Maybe an excuse to get a 3rd radiator and 3 more fans to make it a 3x3 square.
Great idea!
Nice build instructions. One question though. Would it not be better to turn the filters around an have the airflow through the filter from the inside out, this way capturing all particles inside the box? Maybe you need to close the box at the bottom as well then using a piece of coroplast.
Thank you! For air purifiers the fan should be blowing upwards, for two reasons: 1.) If you blow air downward into the box, there's a lot of turbulence that reduces the air flow rate. 2.) By pulling air through the filters before it hits the fan, the fan will stay cleaner.
A giant Rosenthal Box fan style is really amazing and cheaper than anything.
Interesting video. I once talked with the director of facilities of a large school corp. He told me that by Wednesday of the class week, a number of children could not function well within the classroom environment and did not return to class until the following week. The district already had CO2 monitoring in every classroom. But after collecting millions of data values I could find no relationship between CO2 and causation for children who become uncomfortable with classroom conditions. In part that's because high CO2 levels, which occur everyday between 11:30 and 14:30 in every classroom (in the U.S.), is not a pseudo measure of room air quality. (CO2, as a measure of room environmental conditions, is bogus as admitted by ASHRAE. Their recommendation of 1000 ppm is based solely on minimizing body odor.) Indeed the real problem is more likely to be dust - as this study points out. Your point about dust fits the need for an effective room filter, as described in your previous video.
Thank you for this thoughtful comment. Air filtration is definitely key. Proper cleaning techniques are also invaluable. I'm coming out with a pretty unique video about microfiber cleaning within the next month or so.
Your video is packed with information, I suggest taking some info out and make shorter videos that refer back to this. Thank you for all your work
Thank you! Funnily enough, I did make a shorter version of this video on my tik tok. Link in bio.
I work in the building HVAC arena (P.E.), specializing in energy reduction and comfort improvement for K-12. Yes, everyone should know more about psychrometrics - but it will never happen.
That's very cool, welcome! You're probably right. All we can do is keep spreading the psychrometric gospel. I do think cheap little hygrometers that display the dew point would also be helpful.
Oy vey
Use both. A merv13 will scrub large volumes to 25% purity and use hepa13 to clean it further. This way hepa is not going to be overwhelmed with particulate
If we're talking about in-room particulate purification, I disagree. MERV-13 tends to achieve higher CADR than HEPA at all particle sizes. Logically, looking at the data, why supplement a machine that does it all with an inferior, more expensive machine? If we're talking about near-field source control, then yes, supplementing with HEPA is a good idea.
Good job on acquiring yourself a girlfriend. Those apparently don't exist anymore. 😅 Very helpful, practical content. I subscribed. Do you have any advice on the quietest fan options? Edit: Nevermind the last question. I wasn't paying attention on my first watch. You already discussed the fan issue. 👍🏻
Hehe. Glad it was helpful!
