Fitting an Alternator and Traffic Indicators to 1956 Ariel Square Four
After getting my 1956 Ariel Square Four running, I have been going back over the machine tidying some of the areas that I was not so happy with. Two of those areas are converting from a generator to an alternator and fitting traffic indicators.
The video for the alternator did not come out as well as I had hoped so I have included some of this as a "bonus content" to the main video. Fitting indicators was way more involved than I thought it would be but I am very happy the end result. They almost look like they were meant to be there from new!
The list of jobs to do before I can get the bike road registered is getting shorter so not long to go now.
Thanks all for following along on this restoration journey with me.

Ariel Square Four First Ride

A quick ride to check that everything works. Interesting how the camera picks up incidental noise such as the chain rubbing the chain guard on overrun. All went well and still lots of tuning and tightening to do before we go out for a proper ride.
Seven Years in Ti'shed - Square Four Ariel Restoration First Start

It has been a long haul but we are finally to the point of trying to start my 1956 Ariel Square Four after a full nut and bolt restoration. Will it start? Will it run properly? However, special shout out to the following people who went above and beyond to help me. Geoff and Phil a...
Ariel Square Four Restoration Update

Another short update as we inch forward to the much anticipated "will it run" video. Getting painfully close now with only a couple of small jobs to complete before I try starting my Squariel. I have put oil into the engine, gearbox and chain case. No surprises but I am pretty sure that Greta would not be happy with the resulting leaks now staining my garage floor. Something else to attend to b...
Fitting clutch and primary chain to Square Four Ariel
Переглядів 2,1 тис.2 роки тому
This week we are fitting the clutch and the primary chain to my 1956 Ariel Square Four. I also have a bit of a deep dive into the workings of these most important elements of making the machine move. Finally, although it seems like yesterday, it is coming up 7 years since I started this project and some things have been forgotten! Yes, I made another mistake so please do watch through to the end.

Fitting Cylinder Head to 1956 Ariel Square Four

After more delays waiting for parts, I am finally able to fit the cylinder head to my 1956 Ariel Square Four MKII. Some of the cylinder head nuts are inaccessible to a standard socket so I have had to go old school to tighten them.

Ariel Square Four Cylinder Head Removal, Fitting Tyres and Wheel Balancing
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
I have received news that one of the parts that I am waiting for has come off back order. That being the valve guides. Still no word on the valves themselves but at least I am seeing some progress. Today I review why it was such a battle to remove the cylinder head when I stripped the engine. I also fit new tyres, check the spoke tension and balance the wheels.

Progress continues on the Squariel restoration. The barrels are finally back from the engine shop and it is time to fit the rings to the pistons and the pistons to the bore. Ariel Square Four Morgo Oil Pump

Second part of the video from last week. The Squariel gets a heart transplant by way of a high pressure Morgo oil pump. This is one of the first items that I purchased for the Ariel 4GMKII restoration as it does not matter how good the rest of the build is, the life of the engine is dependent on having a good supply of oil to every corner of the engine.

    Why it is you time the camshaft on the Left rear cylinder when the book states Right front

    • @mrsquariel
      @mrsquariel 10 місяців тому

      You are correct. Timing is to right front. Degree wheel is on left rear simply for a reference point. It will always still have the same relationship to the other pistons so it does not really matter where it is.

      Congratulations! Can the average person do the job? I would say so for sure. With patience, a set of whitworth sockets & spanners along with plenty of cups of tea and a "thinking chair", you will be fine. It is the things that go wrong which are what makes the difference between an easy job and a challenging job and with a 70 year old, period complex, motorcycle, there is plenty that might test you. If you do not have the tools or have doubt, I would suggest that you seek help from your local Ariel club or vintage motorcycle club.

      Thanks for your comments and for following my build. Regret I am unable to help with your bottom end dimensions. I was going to get mine 3D scanned while it was apart but the quoted cost was just not affordable for me. A good engine machine shop should be able to line bore the casings to the size of the bearings. It might be a good thing as the oversize, outer bearing is no longer available so you can get your cases machined to fit the bearings rather than having to use a chemical filler.

    Great work Greg, I have picked up quite a few tips from your work on the engine. Did you end up changing the steel used for the head studs? It seems from the before restoration picture, that the bike was running an oil cooler secured to the downtube when in use in NZ, Is this dispensed with now?

    • @mrsquariel
      @mrsquariel 2 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment Paul and good pick up regarding the oil cooler. The head studs are now stainless with mild steel spacers. I am using the Otto head gasket and have tightened the head studs using Otto specifications. Not anticipating further stud issues. I have removed the oil cooler for now. All accounts are the while the engines run hot, the later bikes with the 1 gal oil tank, the oil does not run hot. I will see how it goes without the cooler and focus on having the bike tuned as well as possible. If it runs hot, I can fit a cooler again later if necessary.
