How To Record Pro Sounding Drums With Just One Microphone
Download your Free EQ Cheat Sheet, Compression Cheat Sheet, & Vocal Recording Guide at www.mixinglessons.com/free-downloads
In today's video, I'm going to show you my favorite method for achieving professional-quality drum recordings using just one microphone.
For many home studio users, we might only have one mic, or just one or two inputs on our interface. But that shouldn't stop us from recording great-sounding drums. Fortunately, there's a technique that allows you to capture excellent drum takes with a single mic.
Today, I'll guide you through this technique, and I'll show you how to bring that recording to life with EQ, compression, and reverb. I'll also provide you with my top three tips for getting the best possible results with this method.

    Well done! For vocal recordings in Pro Tools. Should I record in pre fader metering to see the level at which I'm recording with all faders at unity gain, that way my inputs are equal to my outputs, my faders are not adding volume or taking away volume its just passing along the level its given? Thank you!

    • @mixinglessons
      @mixinglessons 4 дні тому

      Yes, this sounds like a good approach. When recording vocals, or any other signal, I have my meters set as pre-fader, and I aim for the signal that I'm recording to peak around -18dB. I hope that helps!

    When someone listen to your -14db lufs song without volume equalization it's going to be a lot quieter than pro records. The loudness is in the mix. When you get better at balancing your mix you notice that it's easy to get etc -7db lufa loudness. This has been the biggest struggle for me personally for so long.

    I see almost nothing about Luna that would appeal to me. I started my career in the mid 70s using the best analog gear available, and yet have zero desire to go back there. I don’t know a single professional mixer who is nostalgic for the hulking inefficiency of those days. The direction of the marketplace is (finally!) dictated by production needs. I can’t imagine what makes UA think the opposite. Maybe 20 years ago this would be a viable product. Today, it gives off strong boondoggle vibes. The great, big image-perfect EQs and compressors and VU meters are an absolutely nuts approach to mixing on a display. I can’t imagine how much screen real estate most of my work would require with LUNA. Vast arrays of knobs and switches I am not using is an odd concept to say the least.

    whats the difference between saving new version and bookmark? are they both saving a different mix

    • @mixinglessons
      @mixinglessons 28 днів тому

      I think of bookmarks as like saving a snapshot of the mix at a particular moment to recall later. Whereas I think of versions as something you're continuing to work on, which will autosave and have an undo history. So you could work on different versions of the mix, and then within each version, you could have bookmarks which give you a snapshot of the mix at a particular moment.

    Hello, I noticed some errors in your video about how loudness works and wanted to send you corrections so that you can put out better information going forward. - LUFS is not a measurement of peak to average level. LUFS is a weighted measurement of mean square average over a period of time. You can find this in ITU-R BS.1770, which defines loudness measurement. - Limiting does not make music louder. A limiter works by turning down peak values over a threshold. This limits the dynamic range of program material and is only louder compared to the original when peak-normalized. - Loudness measurements came about because engineers felt that RMS and peak values were not an accurate enough representation of the subjective perception of level. LUFS is an approximation of subjective loudness. - Streaming platforms have a target loudness level due to recommendations from organizations that shape standards for audio distribution collectively agreeing that a peak-normalized loudness war is not good for anyone. - Loudness normalization has not ended the loudness war, but hopefully it will someday. Not every streaming platform offers loudness normalization and the ones that do don't treat loudness across songs the same. - I can't confirm or deny whether most streaming platforms offer album loudness matching for albums, but this is likely not true since not every streaming platform offers loudness normalization and not all the ones that do offer album loudness matching. If you have documentation or demonstrations that show that this is actually true, I'd be interested in seeing it. Hope this helps.

  • @AKAtAGG
    @AKAtAGG 28 днів тому

    Subbed because you talk like someone who knows his shit. I disagree about the LUFS thing just because for most artists nowadays they need to be close to what Spotify et al want them to be. I mix and master for loads of artists, and some of them prefer not to be close to -14LUFS because they want to be less loud. This, however, means they tend not to get many streams because if your song sounds TOTALLY different from the previous song in a playlist, you get skipped mate. edit: those dynamics you talk about early on, are the same as the dynamics in every song produced in the 80s and early 90s. all of those songs - or at least, almost all of them - have been remastered since then for streaming.

    i think -14 LUFS is too loud for certain types of music Apple Music standard is -16 LUFS, which i like even more. personally, i never go above -13.5 LUFS. don't forget that you have a .5 LU of leeway, so it's actually between -13.5 and -14.5 LUFS. anyway, i'd rather have people turn up the volume a little than turning it down because it's too loud to start with. that was a good primer, thanks for sharing.

    You know I always have this doubt about Luna and Unison. I have a bunch of UAD plugins including all LUNA extensions, I am used to just drop API Vision channel strips for all my channels. At the same time, if I want to record something externally, I can use the API 212L unison preamp, but after it, the signal faces the API Vision channel strip, and that plugin has integrated the 212L as well, it doesn't have a label in the extension, but I assume that because the extension is supposed to be the exact API Vision channel strip VST, and it has it there. I guess my question is, what's the point on recording an instrument through unison for the signal to apparently go in to the 212L once more because of the strip? Does this makes sense at all?

    • @mixinglessons
      @mixinglessons 29 днів тому

      Hey, thanks for your question. Something to note is that, when you use the API vision channel strip as an extension, it's not going through the 212L preamp. Instead, there's a line amp in its place. So you would need to use the 212L as you record. However, if you use the API Vision channel strip as a plugin rather than as an extension, you do indeed have the 212L preamp. So there are essentially different workflows to get to a similar point depending on the way that you like to work. I hope that clears things up. 🙂

    This whole thing over LUFS and streaming is becoming maddening. Do it. Don’t do it. Do it. Dont. I don’t know. Aren’t most professional albums at -9 LUFS on average? And they sound perfectly fine on streaming services. And then there is ambient music by some of the forefathers like Brian Eno who can be as low as -23 LUFS. And then there is classical which needs lots of headroom and quiet space.

    • @EdwinDekker71

      The whole point of using loudness units is to stop fussing about loudness. I just master so it sounds good, usually around -12 lufs or so, and don't worry about it. Also my ears prefer dynamics, not loudness. If I want to listen loudly I'll just turn up the volume.

    • @mixinglessons
      @mixinglessons Місяць тому

      @houdinididiit Thank you for your comment. 🙂 I agree, the amount of contradictory information is frustrating. That's why I wanted to make a video to try and bring about some clarity. The research by Eelco Grimm, in which he analysed the loudness of 4.2 million albums, found the median of the loudest tracks to be -9 LUFS, whilst the average track loudness of all albums had a median of -12 LUFS, and the median of the softest tracks was -14 LUFS. And as you say, wide dynamic range is critical is certain genres. As such, you simply can't master everything to measure a certain LUFS value.

    Don’t know if thats a good advice… In my mind you are more safe that platforms do not ruin/destroy your «art» if it is within the specs. If the music meets the specs, they wont change anything, and it will sound the way you intended. (hopefully…😬😬) Any kind of «normalization» on weak signals migth increase noise… I prefer adjusting gain, if necesseary, rather than using normalisation.

    • @mixinglessons
      @mixinglessons Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comment. I think the idea that streaming platforms ruin or destroy music is a misconception. They simply turn it down if it's louder than a certain level so that it plays back at the same level as everything else on the platform. So I'd rather make music sound the best that it can, regardless of the LUFS measurement. Then, if the level where the music sounds its best happens to be above a platform's distribution level, they will simply turn it down. 🙂

    • @Nov.47
      @Nov.47 Місяць тому

      Platforms don’t change anything about your files other than converting it to their own format. They do not process your audio in any way. Also “normalization” IS gain change. That’s all it is.

    • @Geirkraakenes
      @Geirkraakenes Місяць тому

      @@Nov.47I think you might not understand this fact. Gain is applied at the beginning of the signal-path of each track in a mix. And it should be set to somewhere between -18 to -10 dB at the loudest part for each track, with the faders at 0. This is essential for the plugins to work properly. Volume is placed last in the signal-path of each track, and master-track. In my experience Normalizing affects the overall volume, and not the gain, on each track. That’s why it should be used with care, cause it will alter the signal/noise ratio. And this is specially noticeable on tracks with low dynamic levels. You may end up with a real bad signal/noise ratio on these tracks. That’s why I prefer to adjust the gain properly at the start. I can then lover the track-volume for balancing the mix instead, and put a limiter on a «Pre-master track» to get the desireable Integrated-LUFS reading. Then I’m more confident that my mixes wont be ruined and squeeced by any AI-shit processing of the various platforms.

    • @Nov.47
      @Nov.47 Місяць тому

      @@Geirkraakenes I’ve been mixing, producing, and releasing music for 20+ years. I can assure you that no platform applies any processing whatsoever to your files. There would be mass outrage in the audio community if they did. It’s not their place or their job to determine the sound of your mix or master and they don’t try to. Also, here’s the official definition of audio normalization: “Audio normalization is a process that adjusts the gain of an audio recording to a target level, while applying the same gain across the entire recording.” Normalization will not alter the sound of your mix. Third, plugins don’t need a certain level to operate properly (at least not in the past 15 years). What you may be confused about is the fact that some plugins that emulate hardware obviously saturate/distort at certain levels and they also may emulate the noise floor of said hardware. In the real world, there was sometimes a target (sweet spot) you would aim for to minimize noise and avoid distortion. However, most popular hardware (and the plugins that emulate them) have plenty of headroom and you really don’t need to do anything special other than not overloading the outputs. When it comes to non-hardware modern plugins, you don’t have to worry about overload distortion at all. You can push any level into a Fab Filter EQ, for example. It will never distort.

      Hey, thanks for your question. No, you shouldn't need to delete the free version. I hope that helps. 😊

    It seems you are showing the Vision API console and it's not in Luna pro Bundle? I had to buy the console separate in order to get the view you are showing.Please clear up for me. Thanks

      Hey, thanks for your comment. The API Vision Channel Strip & LUNA Extension come as part of the Pro Bundle. 🙂

    Excellent review - really enjoyed your perspective. I've been a Luna user for almost a year now and you nailed it. Big change coming from years of Logic but a greatly appreciated change. Luna is great and can only get better! Cheers!

      Thank you very much! And I agree, as much as I've enjoyed using a different DAW for many years, Luna has been a very welcome change.

    My drums won't trigger anything? It could be that I have a different drum module but I don't know... Lemme know if you have any ideas

      Hey, if there's no preset for your drum module, then you can select each sound, like kick drum for example, then click 'midi learn' and hit the kit drum and that will assign that sound to that part of the kit. Then go through and do that for each part of the kit. I hope that helps!
