String Things by Mel
Canada
Приєднався 6 сер 2022
Hi! My name is Mel and I am a stay-at-home mom living in Vancouver, Canada. I started knitting late 2019 (after many years crocheting) and have been knitting steadily since. As of March 2022, I officially became a stay-at-home mom and it has been wonderful to be home with my daughter.
I consider myself to be an adventurous intermediate knitter and knit items for myself and my daughter. Almost all my knitting had been done while my daughter napped and I've had to get creative to fit knitting time in as she's grown. I hope knitting is something we can do together in the future.
Knitting is a hobby which provides me with relief and relaxation, as well as keeps my brain active creatively and analytically. I love learning new techniques and challenging myself and I look forward to sharing everything I learn along the way.
I hope you enjoy following along my knitting journey!

I agree totally on the plaudits for the Paul Cardigan! My version is in a singles yarn in merino and the technique support was superb. Will definitely make a second. P.S. love your glow worm version!
Hi! Thank you for this tutorial. I'll use it for a double folded collar but feel a bit unsure about how to do it. Would you sew in the elastic thread before folding over the neckline? Or is it better to see it in after its folded? And if so: do I see it into one of the layer or both? 😅 I'd appreciate any advice:)
Hi, thanks for watching! For a folded collar, I add the elastic after it has been folded and into the inner layer only. Hope that helps!
@stringthingsbymel oh thanks! Would you still add it to the top of the collar or the cast on/cast off edge where it'd be sewn to the bodice?
I add mine near the top, close to the fold.
Niiice it looks like it has good drape
These projects are beautiful! I love the styles you chose to knit and I’m so happy I found your channel ❤️
Thank you for your vidéo. All your knits are fabulous. I also appreciate a lot your voice and way to talk which is for me very relaxing and as a French knitter I can easily understand all what you Say 😊 thank you ! Suscribed with no hésitation 😊
Really enjoyed your round up. It was very helpful to see the video of you wearing the items to get a feel for fit, length etc. I’m very tempted to try the Paul cardigan- it’s always good to learn new techniques. I don’t recall seeing any colourwork in 2024- is this not something you’re keen on? Thanks again for all the details and the time and effort you put into your videos.
So glad you enjoyed it. I'm more of a texture knitter, but I actually have a colourwork project on the needles right now and have plans for at least a couple more in 2025. Thanks so much for watching!
Your Paul Cardigan is fabulous. I enjoy your videos and appreciate your mentioning and using some smaller fiber dyers which helps to broaden my own selections 😊
I have saved your video as there are so many gorgeous patterns used - I absolutely adore the Clara sweater and will be eagerly awaiting release! So much inspiration, thank you ❤
Does the cost include pattern price? I love what you've knit this year!
Thank you! Yes, the pattern price is included in the project costs (except for test knits since the patterns were provided by the designers).
How have you found the melides dress in pure silk wears? is it stretching out? i typically don't love fibers without stretch for a fitted garment but it looks so beautiful and drapey
Hello! Although the silk yarn itself is not elastic, the garment fabric is comfortable to wear and has some give to it. I haven't worn the dress many times, but so far it seems to be holding up well. It's actually doing a lot better than my dress where I held pure silk double (Audrey dress). The Audrey dress is heavy and the armholes stretched after just one wear; however, the Melides being knit with a single strand is lighter and hasn't shown any stretching (yet). I do plan on sewing some elastic into the armholes in the near future to prevent stretching.
All of your knits look super gorgeous ☺️ Your knitting is very regular and looks genuinely like they’re machine-knit, I think it’d be nice if you made a video explaining how you hold your yarn/needles to maintain tension and tips on how to achieve this super even look! (If that is a video ideia that interests you, of course) 🤗
Thanks so much! Maintaining tension is something I have been focused on since I learned to knit (I'm my toughest critic haha). In short, it took some trial and error to get to the point I'm at, but I would be happy to share some tips in a future video.
Hi Mel! Was knitting the unicorn sweater a hassle for the intarsia part..? I have never knitted intarsia… thanks
Hi! I've knit intarsia before so it wasn't a new technique for me. I think the most difficult part of intarsia is managing multiple yarn balls at once and avoiding big tangles. In the unicorn sweater, there are only a few rows where you have more than 3 balls at once, otherwise yarn management isn't too difficult. I find intarsia knitting easier than stranded colourwork because you don't have to worry about floats and tension. I hope you give this one a try!
@ thanks! I will try it! Fingers crossed 🤞 it does not get all tangled…
Thank you so much for adding the text of the name of the pattern you are talking about before transitioning to the next project. I find this to be very helpful. I find that so many times, people mention the name of a project and then move into discussing the details of it and then move on to the next project without repeating the name of the project again. Often it is the discussion of the project, rather then the name, that sparks my interest. If I have missed the name of it, I need to go back to find the name of it. I often wish people would open with mentioning the name of the project and ending that discussion with the name of the project again. Putting it in text is even better. Thank you so much!
I'm so glad you mentioned this. I was worried the summary slides were going to feel too repetitive. But I agree, it can be frustrating when you've missed some information so that's why I added all the text. I wouldn't want you to have to put down your knitting to pause/rewind the video!
Gosh I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Your Paul items are so nice, I have had Moreca Knit's designs on my queue for ages because I love the quiet detailing. Definitely something to make this year...hopefully...
So happy to hear you enjoyed this one! The details in the Moreca Knit patterns are what keeps me going back to her designs. I'll definitely be knitting more of her patterns.
Thanks for sharing! I like watching the regular podcast, but these roundups put things a bit into perspective. The Paul cardigan is just so good! I immediately put it in my ravelry favourites 🙂. Thank you for the inspiration ☺️
The Paul cardigan is a great one! I hope you get to knit it! I'm already brainstorming which colour to knit next.
@ I always struggle to find colours for cardigans. For sweaters and tops I usually have ideas when just looking at the patterns, but for cardigans it doesn’t work 😅.
Loved seeing the roundup! The bright green is such a gorgeous colour on you. Hopefully we’ll see more bright spring coloured items on you in the future!
So many lovely knits! 🤗🖤
Omg that dress looks so amazing! I am so tempted to knit, but the pure silk on 3mm for such a large project is so daunting ahah
Not going to lie, it is a lot of work. But if you break it down into a few rows a day it's a project well worth it!
Congratulations on 10K subscribers, Melissa! I view your knits as all being very classy. Solid colours and lovely classic designs with quality finishes elevate each make. You inspire me to be a more thoughtful knitter. I did copy your Glow Worm Paul Cardigan (different yarns, but same colours: I call mine my Tennis Ball Cardigan). It’s my favourite knit of 2024.
Thank you! Love the "Tennis Ball" name and am flattered to hear you find me inspiring. Thanks so much for watching.
❤
I really appreciate that you mention pricing in your videos. I think it should become more normalized so that we as crafters can make informed decisions on yarn and projects, letting us figure out when we make personalized decisions if we should substitute or not for our own needs.
You're welcome! I agree with you and that's why I share mine - I believe the information can be helpful to new and experienced knitters.
All such beautiful projects but I especially love your reverse ribbon wrap and unicorn sweater! ❤️
🌈🧶❤️
A fabulous video. I love that you have given the prices, as this is important to new knitters. Also the discussions of yarns that grew, is helpful. When one does decide to invest in a project, you want it tow work out. Your knitted makes are spectacular.
Hi Melissa, great range of projects and the Unicorm sweater is adorable. Love how the mane goes around the back. Happy New Year.
You are a very talented knitter 😊 All the things you made are very nice, the unicorn sweater is so fun! I know large part pleasure of knitting is about the proces and not so much about the garment, but that 175 dollar cardigan only worn once sort of hurts😂
Haha I agree, the $175 hurts me too! Unfortunately, not all knits are winners, but hopefully I can make better use of it this year.
Thanks for a very thoughtful description of your knits. You have given me food for thought and I will be adding several to my Ravelry favourites.
Best “Everything I Knit” video I have watched. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
idk if it's just me but the audio glitched at 36:35 it goes silent for a couple seconds
Thanks for letting me know! That's indeed an error on my end. In that section, I mention again the name of the yarn, 7 balls of pure silk used for my dress, and the project cost.
So nice to see another video from you! Beautiful knits as always. I really have to make a Paul cardigan. I can't pull off that stunning green colour but this pattern will look great in any colour. I have yarn ready to go for another Claire vest in dark brown. Excited to get that started but I need to get a few more wooly knits done first...
Your knits are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing all the details. 😊
If there is anything I love, it’s a good spreadsheet. This is brilliant. Thanks, I am subscribing. Please consider a superthanks. That spreadsheet took a fair amount of work.
I'm glad you like spreadsheets as much as I do! It does take some work, but it's something I enjoy creating.
I am so excited for the Clara sweater to be released! If you don't mind me asking, how many skeins of mohair and palette did you use for your size?
Hi, for size 2 I used 2 skeins (100 g total) of mohair. [Sunday Fibre Co. Cumulus Mohair 435 m/50 g] and 3 skeins (223 g total) of Palette Bare/undyed [Knit Picks Palette bare 400 m/100 g]
@stringthingsbymel thank you so much!
I always look forward to your year in review videos. Thank you for taking the time to tally up the costs.
Love, love all your makings ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤thank you for sharing it. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love the inclusion of how much your knits cost.
I was so looking forward to this video ✨😁😁 I think you've become my favorite Knitter ✨👀
Wow, thank you! Such an honour to be called a favourite. Thanks so much for supporting my channel.

Wooow so many beautiful knits ❤☕️
A good year of creation! Everything curated and perfectly chosen with you aestetic 👌🧶
Hi Mel, I have enjoyed seeing all your prolific efforts for 2024 but I wanted to comment on what I thought was the standout garment for you. The Paul sweater was definitely it! Why? Well it had knitting excellence but more than that, the color! The neon bright green looks fabulous on you with your coloring! Definitely your star color. Not that many people can wear this color successfully. I'm one of those, it washes me out. But you on the other hand simply glow when its on you. My personal fav of all your efforts. Thx for sharing! Carrie from Eugene Oregon 😘❤🐕🐑☕🧵🪡🧶
Hi Carrie, once I discovered that green mohair I couldn't stop thinking about it and I'm so glad it worked out for me. Thanks so much for your kind words and taking the time to watch.
Your spreadsheet is amazing! Thank you... I make socks all the time, but am 'afraid' of sweaters. This will be immensely helpful. Great video
Very thoughtful video. I enjoy your presentation. To the point, very gentle and no nonsense. Thank you.
this is so helpful! I'm just getting to learn how to knit and casted on the petite knit cloud blouse and I'm now learning the difference between raglan and drop shoulder patterns.
I love how they all look very very similar....like very similar.....and probably you would find on their patterns how "this is their design and you can't sell items made with this design".....I find these disclaimers so ridiculous....Unless it's a design that people can only find on your web shop, blog, ect, so it's an ORIGINAL new design that you came up with (for real), then everything you see around has already been designed, knitted and experimented by someone else. When people come up with these designs that look like another million designs out there, they surely must have started somewhere and followed a tutorial, a blog post, a magazine article where they could copy the design in order to make it. What I'm saying is they put these disclaimers, yet they copied from someone else!!! Sorry, my comment is not really related to your video but I thought of that when seeing the 3 designs being the same and remembering reading this disclaimer in a recent pattern I bought about making a cardigan that has a shape that many other patterns have! Great video! It really does help to make the right choice of pattern.
Funny how good that Noro yarn looks on you. I went to a yarnshop yesterday to purchase it and I did not like it on the skein at all. In person it looked like I had a sheep in my backyard and this was my own spun yarn 😂
I have the Monday, & was on the fence buying the “No Frills” or Louvre but I think I can sort with the pattern I have. Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial! What is the pattern for the gorgeous cable knit sweater you are wearing?
I heard Hayley Cancer… I looked but cannot find it. Even on her Ravelry, it’s not there. I’d like to know too! 🙋🏼♀️
Hi! It's the Haley Sweater or Haley Genser by Sandnes Garn. Here's my project page on Ravelry: www.ravelry.com/projects/MelissaLu/haley-sweater
@@stringthingsbymel Thank you! I saw you salso answered me on Ravelry :)
@@stringthingsbymelwhat yarn did you use?
I used Cascade 220 and the colour is camel.
I'm interested in the size and shape of the armholes. Some are close fitting and some are baggy.
Thank you! The explanation about types of thread was also very helpful
