23 FM Theory
This is a free lecture from the udemy course: 'SYNTHESIS 101: LOGIC RETRO SYNTH'.
In this video I demonstrate "FM synthesis theory" through the use of animation and audio.
FM (Frequency Modulation) synthesis is a popular type of synthesis used in many software instruments such as FM8 and Dexed.
The first commercially available FM Synth was the classic Yamaha DX7.

Synthesis 101: Logic Retro Synth Promo Video
Where's the next video?
I think, when mine arrives, I might place a couple of 3mm dot stickers, to indicate those couple of controls you need to get the initial sound.
great instructions thank you it was a great joy this is my fovorite synth now
Just bought one and your test helped me to understand all was ok, so thanks a lot! What a beast of a meaty pebblely sound processor this is. Like magic and thunder tucked in a box :)
great one
Rewatching. I have used this for about 6 rave techno tracks. The bass, this is my bass.
can't hear anything
very good. thanks
I KEEP GETTING A REPEATING NOTE EVEN THO I HAVE NO NOTES PREASSED ON MY MIDI KEYBOARD...THE SAME NOTE NOTE FIRES UP EVERY 5 SECS...DRIVING ME CRAZY
I'm led to believe this may be solved with a firmware update.
I just ordered a B2600. I was on the fence on going fully modular with B System100 or semi modular with B2600. But man I think I selected the correct option here. For the price I payed, $425, this just crushes anything I could have gotten as fully modular.
Congratulations on creating a rare instance of the Volca Modular growling / funking and not shrieking. Excellent. I love your polyrhythmic patch.
Best introductory video on the Behringer 2600 I've watched. Immediately started answering a bunch of questions I had.
The best vid around ! Thank you !!🙏
Blue marvin and Gray meanie have "matched transistors, fets and film capacitors". In the old days the transistor amplification (hfe) and offset (in mV) variation was much larger than on some modern SMD transistors. Capacitors had a larger spread in frequency and temperature variation compared to some modern SMD capacitors. These are some of the reasons why 2 ancient ARP2600 will sound somewhat different. Modern matched SMD transistor-pairs will/CAN have close to the same amplification, dc offset and temperature variation. Modern SMD capacitors (C0G) can have nice flat frequency and temperature variation but will cost more than less well behaved variants. A modern "perfect" circuit will not sound as "warm" and as "analogue" or "random" but will behave nicely.
All I want it a tutorial on the BEGIINER stuff. The STARTING POINT. like connecting it to a computer, how and where to hear sound. how to connect to a daw, how to connect a keyboard to it, what to use... ANYTHING lol.. all of these 'beginner tutorials' begin with everything already set up.
Cool summary. Thanks for the vid. For someone new to synthesis, this is actually a pretty good synth for learning sound design.
Ohhh so if it goes to strait then it starts very high pitch of sound😊
How can one drive the filter using the maybe the preamp? ie. So you can keep more low end when the resonance is up?
Hi there, You can patch out of the filter into the preamp and out of the preamp back into one of the inputs to the filter mixer. You can also patch straight into the vca input, so there’s lots of options for feedback and distortion.
This is genuinely the best explanation of harmonics that I have ever seen
Thanks 😊
Hey man, I just wanna say that your videos are a hidden gem to me for learning sound design at home. I'd LOVE to learn about the algorithms you teased at the end of this video, so if you can, I ask that you please continue this series on your channel. Thank you for what you've already done, you're the best ❤
Hey glad you are enjoying my content. This video is an excerpt from my course “Synthesis 101 logic” on undemy and Skillshare. It’s based on the retro synth in logic which has fairly rudimentary 2 operator FM, and unfortunately doesn’t support the FM algorithms I was alluding to. For that you would need a more fully fledged fm synth such as native instruments FM8 or Ableton’s operator synth. I do have a course on Udemy and Skillshare called “Synthesis 101 Ableton” that covers Ableton operator.
@@SonicSafarimusic oh well that's a bit of a shame. I'll have to check out your courses though, from what I've seen they would probably be a good fit for me. Thank you!
I'm really trying to figure out how to sync my Ableton clock to the Sample & Hold INT CLOCK on the b2600 via CV? Could I use a beatstep or my uad interface perhaps? What would be the protocol?
Very informative, thanks!
This is great, but I think it is important to clarify that observing the harmonic breakdown is different than the the waveform itself.
did you sync tempo only over the sync connection, or is the beats somehow firing the modular sequencer as well?
Nice jam
Can u use dummy clips on arrangement view?
Thankyou
thank you.
Logical and clear. This helps a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Soooo..... Spend the extra 100 for the real reverb & hopefully it appreciates better cause it's more rare?
This is by far the best 'zero to hero' tutorial on the 2600 I've found on UA-cam, well done! Thanks :) Have ordered grey, hasn't arrived yet.
It's not an ARP (Alan R. Pearlman) product. Korg has branded that for their reissue. It is a Behringer 2600. So Barp pays no respect to either Uli or Alan. Same goes for Boog.
This should be the official manual 📖 👏🏽
Needed to know this for my music exam, thanks 👍🐐
I wish I seen this video before. I had to keep moving the sliders until I got a sound. Once I got a sound I had to kept moving sliders until the fart 💨 noises went away. 😅.
Thanks for the great video! My Blue Marvin is coming next week and I'm super stoked to get started with it
You really helped me out, understanding it faster. THANK YOU SO MUCH ! Greetings from Vienna / Austria
Pleeeaase don´t cll it twentysixhundred!!! It is a 2600!
This is a nice, no-nonsense get it going video, thank you!!
Not an ARP.
thanks for this tutorial! this software is very daunting for beginners
I LOVE ! ❤
great video again - more please!
Looking for more videos on the 2600 please!
This is a great video - pity the resolution in only 720 as I can't read the labels on the synth. Is there a higher resolution version?
Excellent overview, thankyou very much. I've been looking at this beast for a while now & I will get one next week. I'm an old guitarist who over the past couple of years has taken to synthesis, like a drummer to drink. I am absolutely loving Beh's analogue clones, Model D, & Pro 1 backed by 2 Wasps through my guitar rig are massive. Something else that I'm really impressed with is Beh's 19" rack mount "ultra pro" series of signal processing gear. It's really good.
Thanks for this good starting overview of the 2600. Just got mine yesterday and watching your video was much more enlightening than just reading the manual :-)
Sounds like you are a kiwi?
Good video for beginners, keep going!
Initial gain is up and not droning?
