Welcome to Just Do Something Homestead. We are Deb and Jim. We bought an abandoned beef pasture in West Virginia with big plans to turn it into our own little homestead. I spent most of my life homesteading in northern Pennsylvania. In 2013 I moved to Maryland and married Jim. This is a brand new experience for him. But together we will make this our dream. Join us for endless help on raising vegetables, fruit, nuts, animals, and crops plus canning, preserving, drying, and freezing. You won't become a homesteader overnight. It takes lots of baby steps and plenty of hard work. We are here to encourage you. You've got this! And remember, "just do something" that takes you closer to your goal each and every day.

I bet you can do cut lettuce in the jar to
So glad I passed on some small ones I had saw at a discount store. I'm in debating to learn phase but my main focus currently is sewing then hopefully quilting.
@@ThatLadyDray I sew too! I used to sew a whole lot more but something had to go. Typically I make all my curtains though and I just can’t seem to find the time. Plus it’s easier to crochet in the evenings while hubby watches tv than to sew. Thanks for watching!
😳 16 🥶 Y'all & the chickens stay warm. This cold ain't no joke.
Cool!!
Commenting for the algorithm & bcuz some stores are still marking down Christmas candy.
I looked around here the day after Christmas and the candy was very picked over. I found some seasonal jellybeans but that was all. I should vacuum seal them so I stop mindlessly eating them all lol. Surprisingly hot cocoa jellybeans are to die for! But yes, I’m sure there are some stores that still have Christmas candy marked down. Thanks so much for your comment. In fact, I think I’ll go grab a handful of jellybeans!
I just found this video last week.I love it! I have made 20 so far! Thank you so much!
@@tinydancerpa WOW, 20!!!! That’s pretty amazing. I’m glad you like this pattern. And thanks for your comment.
I love it 😍 looks awesome.
Awwww. Thank you so much! I’ve been making a ton of them lately. Thanks for your comment!
That set is such a score!
The pans or the Christmas dishes? I went back and they still had 2 pans. Another frying pan and a huge pot. I bought them both. And I was THRILLED to see how nice they are to use! Thanks for your comment.
Thanks. Deb!
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
where do you get your labels for the dishcloths? those are so cute ;)
I just copied them off Google. I typed in free crocheted dishcloth sleeves
Lucky you. Im also in a small town across the border in Ohio. Our local Goodwill is not so generous when pricing items. I have found things clearly being sold for much more than they should have been. Employees get first dib on items despite being against company rules. I will never donate to Goodwill again. They are just as corrupt as our government. They go through all donations, pull out high end items and sell them at their on line store.
I’ve heard that. We are soooo remote, we don’t have a ton of options. The other small town thrift shop is overly expensive. Personally I think they buy items from the Goodwill and jack up the prices. We’ve only lived here 2 years. We had amazing thrift stores where I came from. Oh, I miss those days!
@JustDoSomethingHomestead Same here, not any thrift stores but Goodwill and quite a few antique shops with overly priced items.
It’s not oil, it’s oxygen and water that causes rancidity.
Because the foods are high in oil.
@ Mountain House (with over 50 years of commercial freeze dried food production) offers several high-fat content products and guarantees the product’s taste for 30 years. For example, Fettuccine Alfredo with Chicken is listed with 29% DCI of fat (23 grams) of which 70% is saturated fat. IMHO, it’s not the fat/oil, it’s the water content of the final product and oxygen that causes rancidity. It’s the reason people use food dehydrators & freeze dryers to prolong shelf-stability.
I like this video without reason
Elegant gifts. Thank you for a great tutorial.
@@beatrizlopez364 Thank you for watching!
Love your pattern! How many rows did you have?
I don’t count rows. I measure the width and then match it to the length for a perfect square. Otherwise there are too many variables from yarn thickness to tension. This way it’s always square.
My word!! Where is this Goodwill?
@@savoyaepps646 in a small town in the back hills of West Virginia! I’m finding small ones carry, or at least hold onto hard to find deals longer than big city ones.
Hey! I’m just wondering how do you get ideas for crocheting? Also do you have and idea on what your going to do with all of that amethyst colored yarn because it looks like a lot!! Great job storing it by the way!!
Welcome to my channel! I have so much yarn because of 2 things. First, for years I crocheted each of my students (I’m a school teacher) a blanket for Christmas. That took a ton of yarn, and time. Secondly, An older lady from my church who had owned a craft shop, gave me thousands of skeins of yarn for free. I was thrilled to get so much. I create most of my projects on my own. I simply try things until it works. I rarely use patterns from others and I definitely don’t buy patterns. I create my own. That color was very popular among my students so that’s why I have so much. Thanks so much for watching.
Why the crushed red pepper?
@@Elomac5 To help prevent parasites.
Generally/approximately, how long does dehydrated food (e.g., shredded or sliced potatoes, mixed veggies, red peppers, etc.) last if sealed in a jar with an oxygen absorber. I've not been able to find an definitive answer any place. Thanks so much.
Great question. The lack of a solid answer is because there are too many variables involved. For my garden raised foods that I dehydrated, I only plan on one year. Then I restock with the next garden. Different foods store at different time frames. The temperature and whether it is stored in complete darkness also affects it. If stored all year in complete darkness at around 40 degrees it’ll store far longer than bright light and 90 degrees. For me it comes down to testing the food at different timeframes to see when the quality starts to decline.
@@JustDoSomethingHomestead Thanks!!!
Does the pot holder shrink with washing? I've never used cotton yarn. This is a great tutorial!
Cotton does shrink. Different brands seem to shrink more than others. That’s why with my cotton dishcloths I try to make them bigger from the start. Great question!
Great idea!
Why do you put the ring on it once it’s sealed? This is new to me so I’m curious and trying to learn. Thanks!
So if it’s a false seal, your food items are protected. That ring keeps the lid from physically falling off.
What size hook do you use?
Size H or 8 or 5.00 mm
@JustDoSomethingHomestead thank u
I’m new here. How many rows did you crochet. Love your pattern. The H hook is my favorite.
I simple measure my width and do the same for the length so it’s square. Yarns and tensions vary too much to give an exact length.
@@JustDoSomethingHomestead okay thank you.
I've been knitting washcloths for a very long time and looking for some other cute patterns in knit or crochet to mix it up a bit. Looking forward to trying out this one soon! I'm a retired intervention specialist/special ed teacher, and I remember loving those snow days for a little day of catch up on crafting. I also absolutely love thrifting. You are a kindred spirit, indeed! Blessings, Marie
It’s so nice to meet you! I dream of the day I can retire from teaching. It’s back to work tomorrow. The longer the break, the more difficult it is to return. I’m glad you like this pattern. It’s become my absolute favorite. I crochet a lot in the winter and sell them in my farmstand during the summer. Have a wonderful new year!
Do any seeds they may eat grow after they excrete them? Like do you ever find random veggies growing because of how you feed them. Which is what they should all be fed in my opinion! Natural ❤
@@Genesis-wo3dg Well. That would be difficult to tell. I feed them organic fruit, vegetables, and seeds from my garden all summer. Plants do come up but they also eat the plants. Plus it may have simply been seeds in those foods that they didn’t eat and started to grow. I actually plant a full garden for them. But I have to put fencing around it or they’d just eat all the seedlings before they even started producing food.
Definitely not 1 hour. JS.
Hmmm. I just crocheted 3 tonight. Definitely an hour each.
@@JustDoSomethingHomesteadI guess I’m just slow. 😂 very nice pattern.
Gorgeous dishes! I would have brought them home, too!
Not me. I cannot microwave a dish with metal trim.
They are very nice!
@@ManifestMeanings1 Thank you!
The crushed red pepper is how you get spicy chicken...
OMG! This is the pattern I have been looking for! I didn't know that until I saw your video. I just knew that I didn't really like any of the ones I have seen. Thank you, and thank you for your gift tips. I also subscribed to your channel. Happy teaching & crotcheting!
@@lauraosier5790 Welcome aboard! And thanks so much for this fantastic comment. Happy Crocheting. 🧶
So glad I discovered your video! I LOVE the washcloth! And the soap idea is perfect too! I really enjoy making washcloths when I just want to crochet but don’t know what I want to make. And the thrift store ideas are perfect!!!!!! I will be making these soon!
@@JoanSouthworth Thanks for your wonderful comment! I’m glad you enjoyed it. These washcloths are so soft and easy to make. Happy Crocheting!
@@JustDoSomethingHomestead I have been crocheting for few years now and am pretty good at Amigurumi stuff………however, trying to make a washcloth is crazy difficult! Tried counting stitches meticulously and still it comes out with all crooked edges!!!! Crocheting a simple square should not be this difficult! I’m going to look at your video carefully as I crochet and try to see where I’m going wrong. Perseverance!!!!!!
@@JoanSouthworth oh no! Definitely stitch count. Start with a slip stitch and end with a half double. Is it getting bigger or smaller?
@@JustDoSomethingHomestead bigger. Sometimes I have difficulty with’ the next stitch’ and I think I’m putting my hook in the wrong loop and, thus, I’m increasing a stitch. I think that’s what I’m doing.😜😜😜😜
@ yep. Then Comcast you go across and make sure you have the same number at the end. Good Luck! You’ll get it.
Hi - great video, very informative. I was wondering what you used as a template for cutting out the paper towel circle, given it is wider than the diameter of the jar? Many thanks.
@@Wichitaguy77 I think I just used a small pan lid to trace. Lately I use a cupcake liner. They’re cheap and work very well. They fit right on top and spread out. Makes it super easy.
@ Wow - thank you so much for responding so quickly! Much appreciated.
@ you are very welcome.
🎉 WINNER, WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!! Those are awesome scores! 👏🏾 (I'm originally from WV BTW.)
It’s often the small, rural thrift stores that have the best selection!
I bought a couple of these a few years ago at a church craft sale. I have wondered several times how they were made. I feel sure mine are acrylic. They actually feel like they have a piece of batting inside, but I don’t know for sure! I love the colors so much! I don’t use them! I just think they are pretty! Mine also have a hanging loop. Thanks again! I think I will make some cotton ones now!
@@sherryfaires7931 awww. That’s wonderful! I need to make more too. I wish I had more time to crochet. Thanks for your comment.
It is called a yarn "barf".🙃
lol. I LOVE that!
Lucky chickens :) Nice homecooked meal
I love to give them warm treats in the winter!
...crushed red pepper flakes?? Why?
It helps to prevent parasites. Plus chickens can’t taste hot. It also prevents rodents from eating it.
I learned something new today! Thank you!
@@JustDoSomethingHomestead Lol I thought it made chickens spicy when you cook them
@@jm.7305lol that’s funny but the reason is because the chemical capsaicin that makes peppers hot does not affect birds. This was developed to deter others from eating it and allows birds to spread the seeds
@@JustDoSomethingHomesteadI never knew this!! Cool, thanks for sharing. ☺️
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching! I always have fun feeding my chickens.
Where do I find your patterns for dish cloth and scrubbies?
You just watch the video. It shows step by step. It’s extremely easy to memorize.
