Bob's videos cover new 'working' games and fixes to things that are considered working. DT7 has a number of issues still such as settings in service mode not saving (EEPROM hookup is wrong) coin inputs not working (have to use the service coin) and sound dying after a stage. As a result it still has 'not working' status for now. A lot goes in on MAME that *isn't* covered in these videos as a result, because Bob can't really run every new NON-WORKING driver to see how non-working it is.

I discovered emulation the same sort of time. I wasn't interested in MAME at the time but I played the hell out of Genecyst and NESticle. The only access I had to the internet back then was my school library, where I use to download ROMs to floppy disks. Each disk held one ROM (sometimes I had to use Winzip to split them over 2 disks) and took about half an hour to download. Kids these days who can download whole romsets in a few seconds don't know they're born 🤣

@@mamefan not really, it's technical skills that are needed, understanding where the CPU logic is going wrong (or drawing logic, but I think it's CPU logic sending the wrong display lists)

It's missing some effects, the blue is intentionally enabled by the set we have, but there's likely some missing effect going on that makes use of it, rather than it turning the whole screen blue. that kind of thing can't be fixed / improved without somebody tracing the PCB and drawing up full schematics of the background circuit. until somebody provides that (and somebody else finds the time / has the knowledge to implement it)t then it will remain how it is. apparently some PCBs have been confirmed as turning the screen blue, but likely when the set has been put on a Space Firebird PCB instead of the Space Demon PCB (or maybe where the effect circuitry is broken)

@@125scratch2 I have a feeling that's a change that will eventually be proved to be incorrect, or hiding another issue, but who knows. Blue backgrounds for 'space' in early shooters was not uncommon, but sometimes operators did change the boards so they weren't displayed. It's strange the game would enable it if it's not meant to do *anything* For the longest time people insisted Astro Fighter wasn't meant to be blue either, but the boards without the blue were because of operator mods to disable the palette banking.

gambling games are typically what supported the rest of the industry (far more profitable for manufacturers and operators than other types of game) and now that the industry in general isn't profitable at all for traditional games, have pretty much replaced those again in arcades (the ticket games that fill arcades today are really just gambling for kids, very short minimal skill gameplay to win tickets, get prizes that are always of lower value than the tickets while hoping your 'skill' will get you something of greater value instead) they're one of the most important parts of arcade history in that sense, the origins of the entire industry are in gambling devices, even entirely mechanical ones from much earlier in the 1900s, many of those of course being an evolution of your typical table card games etc.

Great improvement on Speed Racer. Love this game.

Apart from OS installation CD-ROMs, there are only 3 CD-ROM remaining. I didn't manage to start Civilization. So there is only Transport Tycoon left. Sorry.

@@bobzed5447 The Civilization disc requires Linux, it was bundled with Corel Linux Deluxe (also one of the new entries in the ibm5170_cdrom set). I don't blame you for not wanting to install them, or the 50 versions of NT added.

Oh, indeed, I should have read the README file on Civilization's CD. And to be honest, I tried to install all OS but all failed in a way or another.

@@bobzed5447 I added all the NT/2000 images. They all function in MAME. NT 3.1-4.0 can be done on ct486; you need to do at least 16MB of RAM, and a CD-ROM drive is necessary for 4.0. Windows 2000 installs and works on the pcipc driver. They're definitely not trivial pieces of software, but they work to varying extents in MAME. (the addition is *sort of* for archival purposes, all these OSes can be done better with other emulators, but having clean OS images is nice nonetheless)

That's something I am not confortable with. When clips are just a bit longer, the whole video tends to become boring. But I will keep your remark in mind for future videos.

@@bobzed5447 I tend to agree, for some of these the clips are a little short, or lack variety that shows off what the units really are (especially some of the multi-game ones where it might have been better to show the menu and a few games) For computers where it isn't clear how to operate them, or Chess machines which basically look the same then I think the clip length is about right as you're not going to be able to demonstrate anything meaningful from them (such as the AI models) anyway. Likewise clones that really aren't different in any observable way to the parents, it's good to see them documented but unless it's something like an alt language version, or one with significant presentation changes compared to the existing sets they're not really showing anything new.

The romset is updated, you only need to get the things that actually changed. The easiest way to keep up to date is using the torrent method, where it only updates all the zip files that changed.

Most ROMs don't change in each version. If you only have a set of games you want that works, they'll probably continue working as-is. That being said, sometimes renames do happen and old bad dumps are replaced with good dumps.
