Shuttle tatting - adding new chain thread
In this video, I talk about how to add new thread when making a rings only pattern and how to add new thread when making a rings and chains pattern.
The basic steps are to tie a square knot with your old and new thread and then hide the ends in the first few stitches of your next ring or chain. The ends should follow your core thread to be hidden.

This is an easy pattern to remember....all rings are (5 stitches, join, 5 stitches), all chains except for the ends are 10 stitches. If you don't have a lot of variegated thread to tat with..... or you don't want to buy any more..... and you have a lot of stranded embroidery thread you won't use for embroidery..... you can use it to tat with! In this video, I talk about the idea of only tatting the first half of each stitch, over and over again, to make your ring or chain. You can also use only the second half of the stitch, if you prefer. The idea is only to use one half of each stitch, not both first and second halves. Making a ring using only one half stitches is called a Josephine ring and can be used for many decorative purpose...

Using the same tatted lace pattern with different colors and types of fabric can create totally different looks. I wanted to share a few examples of these. Thank you for this. I'm new to tatting and really want to make this bracelet. I have made the start and followed your video to make the first set of 4. I'm not sure how you make the next (and other) sets of four. Do you make the top chains and circles across and then go around the other end and make the lower halves of the sets of 4 on the way back? If not, I'm not sure on how to make the sets of 4 all at once all the way across.
Hello! You're welcome and thank you for your comment. Yes, you described the process exactly right. You work two rings then a chain then two more rings, working that way along one side for the length of the bracelet you want. Work the end as instructed then when you begin down the second side, you join the next set of two rings to the corresponding set of two rings on the first side, thus creating your groups of four. hello, beautiful work. I have been tatting for a while, 30 plus years. i have come across a pattern and for the life of me i can not figure out. Hopefully you can. Here we go--- Shuttle 1 SpR5. Do not close. Shuttle 2 R5-5-5-5. shuttle 1 SpR5. Shuttle 2 R5-5-5-5. Shuttle 1 SpR5. Shit 2 R5-5-5-5 Shuttle 2 SPr5. You should have 1 center ring and 3 rings going around the outside of that ring. ??????? i don't get the leave ring open and how to ??????? Thank you in advance i hope you can help. Ive looked through lots of videos Nothing..the book itself was not helpful. again that you
Hello, thank you for watching and for your question. Without seeing the book and pattern in full, the "SpR5" notation gives me an idea that maybe these are 3 rings "thrown" off a split ring center. Not an easy technique, in my opinion. And I would hope there would be an instruction where to close the split ring. The other idea that this could be using is the "self closing mock ring" or SCMR. If you do a search for that term, there are LOTS of tutorials and instructions available. This technique is basically using a chain with a loop at the beginning. After you work the chain stitches with rings "thrown" off, you pass your working shuttle through the starting loop and "close the ring", but actually you are just bringing the two ends of the chain together. The confusing part is that the pattern you offered could be worked using either technique. Hopefully, though, my explanation will help you find the way that works best for YOU. I'm stuck because my ring doesn't close...help!
Without being able to see how you are doing things, the suggestions I would offer are these....try making your knots a little looser as this might make it easier to pull the ring closed. Also, possibly try using a larger size thread to practice with....it might be easier to see the two sides of the knot and what they are doing. Good luck and please keep practicing. If you are going to teach these very basic steps, then you should realize that we new beginners are not good at judging the size of our picots, and maybe you should use a guage while teaching us.
Thank you for your comments. In my opinion, each person is different. Every person learns differently and every person teaches differently. Tatting is not an exact science. I have never used a picot gauge. I learned how to make consistent picots by practicing. A lot. I would suggest practicing to find your own style and method, a way to make things that you are happy with. I appreciate your constructive criticism on my teaching method but hope that everyone will view learning how to tat as the adventure that it is. Thank you for watching. 🙂
How did you create the new loop around your hand after you closed the first one for the ring? Did you use the yarn from the shuttle to wrap around your hand? I saw others use yarn from the ball but doesn’t look like yours is connected to the ball
Yes, the second ring was created using the thread from the shuttle. A rings-only pattern only uses a shuttle with no ball attached. Once the first ring is closed, the shuttle thread is wrapped around the hand to start the second ring. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching! 🙂

This has been super, super helpful!! I've only done a little needle tatting so far, and am starting with shuttle tatting now. But it's been very confusing to figure out how I'm supposed to know which shuttle to use, or how to know if I'm working on the shuttle or ball thread. This video has worked best for me, it really "clicked" for me when I watched it!

Starting with a solid understanding of the basics helps keep tatting FUN! Your explanations are clear and easy to understand. I’ve been tatting for 20 years and have learned so much in the last year from watching videos. This one would have been very helpful in the beginning. I used the cut and glue method because I had never seen any other method until recently. Combining four different ways to deal with the ends in one video is a great idea! Thank you.

Please show how to add more chain thread. Adding shuttle thread demo was awesome. I was never shown to tie ends with a square knot first.

You made it look very easy but I do know that it's a matter of practice, I can needle tat but I am now giving the shuttle a go fingers crossed its not as easy as the needle. But thank you for taking the time to share your experience and advice.
Thank you for watching and for your comment 🙂 In my opinion, you are perhaps one step ahead of the "very" beginner, who has never done any tatting at all. Because you know how to needle tat, you know what the thread is supposed to be doing to create the knots. Now, for you, it is just a matter of learning and mastering the tension in your fingers, creating the knots there, instead of on the needle. You are correct....either method requires practice; but I know you can do this! Good luck! 😀
As a beginner, what supplies should I invest in? Do I need more than one shuttle, I was looking on Amazon and you have very many options, I was wondering what you would recommend? I think I have watched enough videos to confirm that this is something I want tp try. Thanks so much for the very clear instructions Take Care Hugs and Smiles
You are correct....if you search "tatting shuttles" on Amazon, a LOT of options come up. I would recommend 1-2 packages of the "two shuttles per pack" plastic Clover shuttles (solid colors like blue and pink, green and yellow etc). I would not recommend the tortoise shell style. Those tend to be very stiff to wind and use. Starting out with 3-4 shuttles allows you to have a couple different colors wound at the same time, if you want to practice with one color as rings and another color as chains. I'm so glad you have decided to give it a try! I know you can do this! Happy tatting! 😀

I am thrilled to find someone willing to teach this dying art. I love tatted pieces I have yet to try it first I will need to find a shuttle or two then I am wondering how I will make out with arthritic hands; it is not too bad most days. but I still very much want to try this . Hi Lori! Your enthusiasm makes me so happy! 😀 I also have arthritis in my thumbs (mostly) and usually the pain is worse when I DON'T tat. Sounds weird but tatting actually helps.
