Looking for progress update keep it up 👍
As I plan my build, these videos are extremely helpful. Enjoy fatherhood and I look forward to your return.
Yeah, I decided to make the videos I always wanted to have... Thanks for the comment.
Hi Chris Waar kan ek jou kontak? J
cgscozy@gmail.com
Where you at with the build? I love these videos as a reminder of the slow but steady race to the finish.
Check out the latest videos on my channel. :)
Love the soundtrack. And the fiberglass work.
Congratulations on you and your missus.
Thank you!
Building airplane is an extreme marathon job. Sometimes, I needed to leave the project for a couple of weeks just to decompress. While I enjoyed building my airplane, I needed time to take care of other aspect of my life. I really enjoyed watching your video and I was able to know the various aspect of building the Cozy.
Brilliantly clean build! I kinda chucke about the license plate censor. It is important to retain privacy. But in the US, this aircraft would have to broadcast ADS-B. Giving away all of your data. Not only name and address, but every single second of every flight you have ever flown is stored in permanent memory available for anyone on earth to evaluate.
Yeah, I'm not sure what ADS-B leaks in SA, but even our aircraft register, which used to be publicly query-able, has been taken out of public view. However, given our crime rate, at least while I'm building I don't want to show all the thieves where to come steal ... say... an expensive aviation engine once one is procured.
Thank you for the update brother.. family first, play later. Take care
Are you still keen to build yourself?
@@Chatsu8o for sure.. who doesn't want to fly a cozy one day?
I know the feeling I had some complications when my daughter was born, but that’s the price you have to take your still young and have a full life to finish your build I was wondering what happened to you I’m happy everything is ok hopefully you can get back to work win the time is right
Life happens when you’re not busy doing anything else. I am new to your channel but I will wait patiently for your next update. Enjoy your baby he will be grown up before you know it.
You guys are already great parents. Give yourself time. You will be able to complete your projects when time is ready. Make sure to try and give you and mommy some time for yourself as well wherever possible to stay positive. Keep the faith. Kids are blessings that will keep surprising you daily. You are always in my thoughts. Send all our love to you cousin as well as mommy and baby. Stay positive and keep those positive thoughts flowing through you. This will get better and better. Thinking of you guys. Lotsa❤
I was expecting your time would be taken when you become a parent. It wasn't until my kids were teenagers before I realized that I could take some time back for myself (for airplanes). Enjoy all the stages of parenthood; they pass so quickly!
Any updates on your Cozy build? It’s been while. Best wishes.
@7:35 ;)
Can somebody please explain to me why people aren’t just using the cable that plugs in for 3s? Am I missing something? Just seems easier…I’m trying to solve battery issue next and don’t know how to go about it.
This is a mystery to me as well. Did you find the answer?
Thank you so much for the videos as always. I have a huge dream to make my own cozy mk 4. your videos are so helpful for me!!!
Love the commentary and the music. Keep up the awesome work!! Hoping to start my own Cozy build in the next month or so
Hi Cody, I'm aware of you from the FB group, I commented on one of your questions. I hope you're building soon, it's amazing to see the progress for myself from when this video was made until now! I just have a baby in ICU at the moment so excuse my tardiness. Thus this cozy project is paused for the moment, also see the latest vid on this channel. Get building! - ChrisG.
@@Chatsu8o appreciate that! And so sorry to hear about your child, I hope they're ok! Cheers
Great video. I much prefer you explaining what you are doing. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I think may I prefer this format also.
thanks for your videos to this point and best wishes and health to you and your expanding family! - CZ4 #1563

You've only got four months to make real progress then, because once the baby comes, you won't have much time, if any, for your airplane for several years at least. Good luck!
I choose to live like in egypt: next to denial.
Hi Chris. Slowly but surely.. this build is coming along well. Happy that you don't have to worry much about the electricity issues. Congratulations
existe projeto .
Awesome! What software are you using?
It's X-Plane 12 with the VSkyLabs Long EZ addon.
I have Microsoft fight-sim. I have looked into X-plane & have been interested, but I think now I might just bite the bullet and buy it
@@mikeycrabtree123 I think MSFS definitely looks better than x-plane, visually. But they each excel at different things. There's a free time-limited demo to try on the x-plane website.
Hey? Maybe I'm mistaken, but Is the front seat bulkhead inclined towards the back? Shouldn't it be inclined with the lowest part towards the dash?
Hi Charles, In this video the fuselage is upside down.
Following with keen interest. I’m in Pretoria if you never need help with layups or sanding 😉
Howdy, are you interested in building a cozy or just looking?
@@Chatsu8o I've been researching the Rutans online for a few years. The Cozy fits my planned mission to a T. I'd love the opportunity to work on a real one

Just keep going! Are you putting it on an EAA catalogue build process as well?
Nah. :D
Impressive.
Your building quality of excellent. Nice watching your videos. Seasons Greetings 2022 and keep the pace. It will fly, no doubt.
Seasons Greeting to you and yours also. I'm enjoying the videos and grateful that I live without rolling blackouts. Keep your eyes on the prize, see you next year.
This will be the last edition for 2022. Season's greetings to everyone around the world! Thanks for all the support, and see you for more building in 2023!
maybe a year late, in the EAA composite course, we used tongue depressors for the flox corners
Proud owner of serial number 1563. Time to clear the deck of existing projects so I can start this one. Thanks for the inspiration! Enjoyed your build videos.
loving your build videos. you're keeping me company while I'm working. I was wondering about your vacuum bagging. Maybe I didn't hear your explanation properly. I was under the impression you needed a top batting to soak up extra resin, during vacuum. (maybe revealed in a later video). Not sure what my serial number will be but I have arranged the acquisition of a set of Mark IV plans.
nevermind, I see you used some batting on top of the part with the vacuum bagging
@@erikpetersen3812 I was chastised by the one of the creators of the "Lo-Vac" method for not understanding it's true purpose: Making glass conform to difficult curves. And is not for achieving a good resin/glass ratio (as in traditional vacuum bagging). Which is fair, because I found it just starved my layups (beyond usable state) and destroyed the last part I tried it on. In short: You don't need it, and it's probably a bad idea for most layups. BUT, if you're curious about how it works, there's a full writeup here: www.cozygirrrl.com/lovac.htm Spoiler: The "bleeder" is replaced by peelply, and the batting is replaced by paper towel. Good luck getting plans and I hope you start building soon! Keep us appraised, it would be good to hear someone else's progress.
Do also watch this: ua-cam.com/video/RqCU6ZITPbA/v-deo.html
@@Chatsu8o gotcha. I am more than likely going to use traditional vacuum bagging and will also layup full boards to cutout. I'll see how the 4x8 CNC router can manage cutting out parts.
We live in Colombia and want to start on a cozy but we need the mil-spec for the foam core that you use in South Africa to built yours. Thanks in advance for the help
Do you have cozy plans yet? The plans specify everything you need: PVC foam, EXTRUDED polystyrene, and "Last-a-foam". Which one are you having trouble with?
@@Chatsu8o thanks ! Will include the plans in my Christmas list . Thanks again
@1459nick "Aerocanard" put out a set of plans for convenience for their Cozy clone. They're no longer up to date, and should NOT be used to build anything. But, from a reference standpoint they're useful as they're almost identical to the cozy plans. If you want to start reading up, this is where you can start while you wait for your official plans. You should _DEFINITELY_ read chapter 3. drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B-ke8lXeGP9sS1loa0FQQ0xyVDA?resourcekey=0-wQbAga9BX4TSAft_IbeSvQ&usp=share_link
Been waiting for this one.. great job big brother.
Why so anxious?
@@Chatsu8o some of us get a lot of inspiration when we see the progress.

Lot more where that came from. :)
good explanatory videos thanks
Lekker man! What epoxy are you using? Looks like AMT bottles on your table.

You're doing awesome work! Keep it up! I love seeing your progress, as I recently picked up an unfinished cozy that was left about this stage... and hope to be starting my quality check and build in the new year!
Thanks, and Congratulations on your new project! Only thing I can say is get going and get going soon. Do a little every day and you'll be surprised at your progress.
Soon, the Cozy rocketship will be ready... just gotta keep at it! 🚀 Great to see your progress ;)
Missing footage: @1:17 There's a hard cut where the layup of the landing gear hardpoint re-enforcements is skipped. New glass can be seen appearing forward and aft of the landing gear opening. @12:00 After 6.5+ hours of recording the camera JUST missed recording the end of the evening's work: Peel-plying the upper longeron re-enforcements. The very next thing I do is REMOVE that peel-ply after curing. I'm fighting this demon but every now and then it still catches me. :)
Yep I know what you mean when it takes you double the amount of time it should. I think the problem is, everything you do is the first time though. I found when doing the wing's I was a lot quicker the with the second wing, I also had some confidence in my abilities. I think I burn a lot of time over preparing and hesitating when I'm not sure what I'm doing. The scary part is the gluing and glassing as it's not easily undone if it's not quite right. Keep up the good work, looks like you've got a handle on what your doing.
One day at a time brother... Nice job. Even nicer to see in person
Great to see you back building 👊🏻
Lots of shaping on the nose of the plane; the urethane foam is definitely easier to get the proper shape. Just fill in the holes (dings) with dry micro; then use a light wet micro layer over the entire foam surface to allow very good adhesion to the foam, then lay on the glass. No micro at the finishing stages required. Keep up the grind on the plane and it will be done one day.
Very nice progress! Have you ever played around with Isoboard? Its extruded polystyrene foam used for roof insulation. Comes in sheets up to 50mm thick. Much tougher than urethane.
Indeed! It totally slipped my mind, the wings will be eventually hotwired out of it (plans call for the American "blue foam") . I can be seen using it for a plug here: ua-cam.com/video/toXkmBI4vp0/v-deo.htmlm32s I think I will play with making compound curves out of it because I'm gonna need it in the nose.
@@Chatsu8o Where do you get the big blocks of it in SA? We were chasing after that foam back in the 90's to make surfboards.
isoboard.com/insulation/properties/ See: "Dimensions"
It should be said that it IS possible to join foam blocks using micro. As long as you're not gonna hotwire through it.
Random question: What are the pros/cons between building a Cozy (off plan) vs a Velocity (kit) from a South African perspective?
Hi Pierre, not being an expert on the matter I can merely offer my lay opinion. The pros/cons line up pretty much as they would in any country, I think. Velocity has much higher up-front cost and lower building time, and I very much expect higher overall cost too. Depending on the model it may be bigger, carry more load, etc. I think it's mostly a time vs. money question at the end of the day. Also depends on what exactly the mission is. There are velocities (like the twin) that do much more than a cozy can do (for a lot more money of course). With the Cozy there's a LOT of building time, but the costs are spread over a longer timeframe as you can acquire materials/parts as you need them. Also some materials can be acquired locally with relative ease at low cost. I'm getting on with the fuselage and still nowhere near the most basic velocity kit cost more than a year into the project. There just isn't one up-front "kit cost" (+ duties + shipping) you have to lay out, which I would say also lowers non-completion risk. Some parts still do need to be imported AND you could argue most of the materials (fiberglass, epoxy, et al) get imported by distributors anyway ... you could say the import costs are a wash, but are more amortized over time. To me it FEELS like the overall costs will be much lower with the Cozy. You can also choose to complete a cozy at any level of finish: You can go cheap and really basic or blow mountains of money on expensive parts, etc. You are basically free to do how you want it, as cheap or expensive as you want it (within reason). You could also argue that the Velocity has some US-rate labour costs factored in... but then nobody in SA is going to build you <50% of a cozy at SA rates anyway so it ends up being your time and whatever you think your time is worth. OR how much you enjoy the building process vs just wanting to get in the air ASAP at any cost. So the Cozy, being plans built, offers a bit more flexibility in the builder modifications/preferences dept.... you build it the way YOU want it (of course taking care not to build a death trap). Velocity gives you the choice of various models that have pre-designed configurations (although I understand the list of optionals is pretty long there too...). With the Cozy you have to do a bit of vendor discovery, late night internet digging for parts/resources/information/modifications/etc. Whereas with the velocity you just get your biggest credit-card out and get it all tied up with a little bow for you with less time investment in that dept. Myself, I'm enjoying the satisfaction of doing it all by myself, mostly by hand, and sourcing things myself I'm actually finding kinda enjoyable. I REALLY enjoy doing the work and slowly seeing it all come together and having a very intimate knowledge of every fiber in the plane because I put it there by my own hand. The feeling of satisfaction this gives cannot be overstated, personally. I have a feeling that flying something that you 100% built yourself has to be a pretty amazing feeling too. Maybe it's the same for Velocities. I wouldn't know. Hope these musings help.
I would add one thing: Having personally climbed into both I can say the Velocity's gullwing doors are much easier to get in/out of. Older people or people with physical limitations could really appreciate this fact.
@@Chatsu8o OK cool, that gives a really good comparison. What about resale value ? Could a well built Cozy be turned back into cash if needed?
@@sayithigher Yes, I know of two that have been sold to overseas (US) buyers. But the market for them in SA is non-existent, as far as I can tell. People do buy/sell half finished projects too.
Loving this series.
Love this. Been wanting to build. I think you have me hooked. great music
