How to Build a 650 hp 3406E That Lasts a Million Miles
Переглядів 5 тис.2 місяці тому
This is exactly how I'd build a 40 pin 3406E if I were going to put it in a truck that I owned and wanted to run. If you want more horsepower than stock and yet want a more durable and long-lasting engine than stock, this is how to get there. I didn't put this in the video, but if this isn't quite enough power for you, you could add a marine cam for a bit more. But I'd definitely o-ring the hea...

I unfortunately have a SDP C15 do you know what is needed to delete if possible. Also if it makes its last longer, great video by the way you earned a subscriber.
I don't get into deletes and tuning personally. I'm really sorry that you have that engine though. lol. I will say, whatever you do, don't let the turbo setup on that go. The turbos on the SDP are ball bearing turbos which makes them an even better setup than the prior Acerts. Glad you found it worth watching!
Nice 359. I just picked one up myself. Do some 359 videos.
You'll have to be patient with me. I can't wait to get started but I've got some other projects I have to do first. If I can find a bit of extra time to mess with it, I'll post a video.
12.7 Detroit all day for me
Id go smoke lenses, other than that clear.
I got a question for ya. How do u get a shop full of long hood Pete’s and beautiful cat engine builds, and I get a lot full of 680’s and 579’s with paccars ???? Great videos though I really love your channel it’s inspiring me to want to start one.
Lol. I'm a lucky guy. I started out working for a guy with a small fleet of nice Pete's and a used truck lot. He'd buy trucks for me to build and then sell them to local farmers and such. Then they'd end up bringing them to me for repairs. Eventually, I got a reputation and my customers had nice trucks. It's been twenty years...
Thanks for all the great information very detailed. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thank you! And Merry Christmas!
Amazing work
Thanks again!
Interstate made me😂
You need to put some def in the 359 to much rolling coal 🔥
lol. That'd do the trick...
WTH ! Why bother with a video ?
Now that is a question in which I have no idea how to answer....
How much HP and torque is it expected to make? And what kind of fuel mileage will it get?
Not exactly sure what the power level is going to be. Over 800 hp. I told my tuner what engine it had to edge out and he said 'That'll be hard to do.' He thought about it for about six or seven minutes and told me this would be a good start.
Do you have to cut counter bores in order to do a rebuild or inframe peace
Most of the time you have to. It all depends on the shape of the block deck and the liner protrusion measurements. I didn't have to cut every bore on this one because we had the whole block decked. If you look through my videos, I've got one all about liner protrusion. Thanks for watching!
Jcb John Deere breed mtu Detroit diesel best engine overall
Something to think about to stop rust jacking when installing plates inside frame rails. Spraying fluid film between those surfaces will stop rust jacking. Worked on OTR trucks for over 20 years at stealerships and fleets. Great video on frame replacement.
Yep. We really like fluid film. We undercoat our vehicles with it once a year, use it on battery and starter connections, and spray down steel fittings and lines on plow trucks. It's great stuff. Thanks!
Awesome as usual ! Thanks Greg
Thanks!
A wonderful video on that build and the information you give and details is amazing, merry Christmas, thank you
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too!

Thanks for the content your videos are very informative. I’m from NC and would like to learn whatever it takes to build engines for semi trucks I’m currently a truck (company) driver and I’d like to know what steps you would recommend in order to learn more about CAT, Detroit, and Cummins engines?
It all depends on your specific situation but learning on UA-cam really is a great beginning - at least to familiarize yourself with the different designs and how the engines work. You can only diagnose a problem properly if you understand how the system works. Once you know, how they work, unless you can attend some sort of schooling, I'd look for a small shop that works on the type of trucks you want to work on, and see if they would want to take on some part-time help or something. But no one is going to give you an engine to work on right out of the gate. And it's best to start simple and work your way up.
Your videos are awesome man.. quick question tho. Where can I get a marine camera for a 12.7 Detroit?
Thank you. God bless you.
Thanks for watching!
👍👍 someday I'd like to own/ build/ drive a high hp CAT..But for,now the old 5EK will have to stay at 475 ..at least while the old man is driving it... he's hard on things the way it is.🤣.but anyway, thanks so much, for bringing us along 👍👊
Lol. Big hp engines only last if the driver exercises the proper amount of self-control. Stock cats are a lot more forgiving. Thanks!
@bigrig_smilespergallon 👍👍 right on feller👊
2 turnin 6 burnin
I can't believe you are doing a 6nz with compound turbos. Nobody does that and I love it. I am an Acert lover because you absolutely cannot get the power out of a single turbo that you can from a compound set up. Thank you so much for doing this. I actually always said that if I needed to change things I would do a 6nz block and head but still keep the turbos just to get rid of the IVA's in my MXS!!
Glad to be able to do it! This is my first one. But it's a setup I've wanted to do for a while. Gotta thank the guy that does my tunes for info and advice over the years. He's been doing this stuff way longer than me.
I have some milled factory turbos the high pressure turbo has a 96mm turbine milled into the stock housing the 80mm high pressure over a 95mm atmosphere and the 96mm turbine
I'm here because of Jermale, but I'm here to give my support. You're a very talented mechanic, fabricator. Looking forward to watching your channel grow. God bless you 🙏🏿.
Thank you!
Any part number for cam spacer tool ??thanks for the videos
www.apexinds.com/tools/M10160.html It'll get it in the ballpark but I quit using it. Especially on a 40 pin engine, the timing needs to be perfect.
Another great video 💪💪 thank you brother and keep them coming!
Thanks! Will do!
If converted 2 a single turbo would it loose any power 🤷🏾♀️?
It wouldn't necessarily lose peak horsepower. The compound turbos provide a bigger power band and better engine performance. Which would result in having more power throughout the rpm range while it still might have the same peak horsepower. The twin turbos should out preform a single.
I love the work your doing period. I was a mechanic b4 i was a driver, i still love engines 1st & foremost. Doesn't really matter how long they are. You can speed it up if you have 2. Cats, Cummins & Detroits are the only engines i enjoy & think should be in every truck
Thanks! I'm with you on choice of engines. Best engines ever built.
Salute and Respect ALWAYS Brotha Greg it's ALWAYS good to see you with another great episode of content and video of a professional MASTER MECHANIC work and workmanship in full detail and operation. You have DEFINITELY built a BEAST. It's a tutorial and lesson of learning structure of hands on step by step instructional. I like how you describe things plain and simple for people that really don't know or understand the textbook language. That engine looks excellent and great, just like showroom model. You and Mark have really put alot of time and effort spent in and on this rebuild project. I can't wait to hear and see this first crank start up, I know that CAT is going to pur the turbo will be whistling. Another great episode and for the books. You and Mark blessed and safe, keep SHINNING AND GRINDING....💯👍🏽💪🏽🤜🏽🫡👀🐐⛓️🔥👊🏽🔥⛓️🐐👀🫡🤛🏽💪🏽👍🏽💯 LEGGOOOOOOOOOOOOO TEAM SMILES PER GALLON!!!!
Thank you! We appreciate it!
You did what I thought could NOT BE DONE! Good job! That engine MUST HAVE a 4 row radiator to keep it cool.
Thanks! Yeah it will. I think we're taking the water-cooled transmission cooler off and putting a big air cooler on the trans. We've found that doing that helps a lot when it comes to keeping the engine cooler.
I know its an inconvenience to make long videos, but me and probably many others would really like the things you may consider "unimportant" important. All details matter, trucks of the trade, pitfalls of learning DIY, newbie aspiring newbie engine builders, why's and why nots, etc... Talking shop about other engines would be nice, making comparisons between "legacy" or bulletproof blocks like the 6NZ and equivalent blocks by other manufacturers would be 👍
Thanks for your opinion and letting me know what suits you. I'm often not sure who's really watching the videos. I am constrained by needing to get work ran through the shop, running the shop, and taking care of the family. But I'll keep all of that in mind and when I find time and a subject that I think I can get deeper on, I'll try out making a more in-depth video. Thanks!
Yessir Greg!
buy the cat tool to set the idler gear stub.
I've got one. I almost mentioned to everyone not to bother buying it. If you're building a 70 pin cat or newer, it'll probably get you close enough. But if you're building a 40 pin, you'll have better performance by actually setting the timing dead on. The cat tool often leaves you half a tooth off.
@@bigrig_smilespergallon not sure what your talking about but the tool that goes into the cam and sets the idler works.
@@youtubeisawesome2487 40 pin only goes off of cam timing so the timing has to be perfect. 70 pin goes off of cam and cranks and can compensate timing for up to 3 degrees if I remember correctly. More than that, and it'll throw a code. The lash tool will make the lash right but the timing is often off. It can be a big deal if you get into elevation. Anyways, for best performance, you should set it dead on.
