Here's my pick of engines and a brief description of my thoughts on them. Reliability, performance (power and fuel mileage), longevity, and ease of repair are my main criteria. Ideal engine is going to be dictated by the goals of the owner, the job that the truck is doing, and even the geographic area you are in. These are my opinions. I'm sure I could have done an entire video on every engine ...

    I like the cats too easy to service. The early dohc isx engines I heard are prone to eating up cams which the x15 solved that. The x15 also has bigger fuel filters. Volvos are pretty good too I’ve seen em with high mileage but the auto shift transmissions suck. One time I was working on one in -10 doing tires on it and the transmission would not shift out of neutral until I closed the doors and warmed up the shop. Also not a fan of paccar engines at all. Hard to work on always problematic. The trucks are awesome

  • @seabulls69
    @seabulls69 3 дні тому

    Uncle Tony's Garage has a similar philosophy. Older vehicles can be more economical to obtain and refurbish and, if you think about it, easier on the environment. Why? Fewer raw materials because you're simply recycling existing materials while avoiding the cost of sourcing the raw materials needed in making an entirely new product. Only problem with that notion is quality parts availability. I hope that, one day, manufacturers and vendors will step up to the plate and make it easier for us do-it-yourselfers to restore and service the older stuff which (usually) doesn't require a degree in troubleshooting digital circuitry.

    • @bigrig_smilespergallon
      @bigrig_smilespergallon 3 дні тому

      100% agree. I'm gonna do a video on this. Think about this: Does anyone really think that anybody is going to be making new electronics in twenty years for the trucks that are being built today? You can not buy even a reman Paccar engine ECM for a 2012 truck. (Or at least a year ago, you couldn't. I assume it's still the same.) Why would anyone bother? These new trucks have too many ecm's and modules. Once a truck has lived past it's designed lifetime, they're gonna stop making the electronics for it. And while we can wire around obsolete electronics in old trucks, you're not gonna be able to afford to on these most modern trucks. You're really winding me up here. lol. Gonna have to put some thoughts together and do that video soon. Also, I don't watch any UA-cam really, but my brother has showed me Uncle Tony's Garage. That guy is brilliant and everyone should take a bit of time to let him earn your respect. He knows what he's talking about.

    My 97 5EK when I hold a high rpm like 1500 rpm say going down a hill or just coasting then I get back on the throttle it'll miss a couple times and straighten right out. No Matter if cruise or pedal takes over or if Jake's are on. Do you think this gear would do that. I've done a few other things but didn't know about the gear cracking thanks for any advice.

    • @bigrig_smilespergallon
      @bigrig_smilespergallon 3 дні тому

      It definitely could be. Centripetal force causes the crack to open up and it throws off the magnetic field that the cam sensor is reading off of for timing. If you can't find any other issues or have any other symptoms, I'd probably check it out. I wouldn't be surprised if your gear was about to give out on you.

    The n14 is so beloved by drivers but I absolutely hate them things to work on. They kinda give me the vibes of the SDP. The 855’s were fantastic engines for the time and the job at hand. They just didn’t transition well to the electronics age. Much in the way obviously the c15 was amazing for its time but just wasn’t designed to make the leap into the emissions era. Cummins would’ve been better served to start from scratch when designing an electronic engine, much the way cat would’ve been better off starting from scratch on their regen engine.

      In their day, they were definitely one of the kings of the road. And when you got one that's running right, you can't say much bad about them. Even today, they can be a better fit for some applications than more modern engines. Those engines can sit longer without minor issues shutting them back down. They're great for local hauling where fuel mileage doesn't matter so much as reliability. I've seen guys make a living off of them recently but the rest of the truck and business has to be pretty dialed in to make it work best.

      I don't know if you'd still get all of the flow you want by teeing it in. Tees tend to slow down a flow. When you look at the port hole in the block that you're gonna use, it's only 3/4" pipe. It's awfully small. Take a look at the C-15's and they put a 2" x 3" window in the block at #5/6. So, yeah, you could but I think it might have a better effect if you used a separate port.

      @@bigrig_smilespergallon Ray Comfort and Living Waters is great. He is an amazing evangelist and man of God. No pressure. I'm about to start back driving on loggers and looking to buy my own truck in the near future, after getting into the swing of things driving for someone else. I currently have a small time building business. I like building things, fixing things, and repair and service my own vehicles etc. I enjoy classics and am not about plastic trucks. Western Stars are my particular favourite. They mostly come with DD15 Detroits. 2013 and older with 14L Series 60. My second son (18) wants to be a driver so back behind the wheel we go. Thank you Greg.

      Yeah. Pretty much a 6NZ. It was an 'E' model but it was the first 70 pin motor. So a lot of the issues and improvements that I was pointing out that can be done to make the 40 pin better, don't apply to the 2ws.

      @@3406e I've been around a 1mm before but didn't do much work on the engine itself. The truck was unique. . . Kenworth T-2000 (Customer called it T-too-ugly). Eighteen speed and a bit of wheel base. White with blue racing stripes. It used to belong to Carol Shelby Racing. Kind of cool.

    Quick question, u mentioned.0035-.004” liner protrusion. Assuming upper & lower counter bores were done and the block was decked, at the machine shop, now you install new liners, the protrusion measures closer to .005. How do you end up with closer to .0035-.004. I am running an O-ringed head. One other thing I would add, is a set of ARP studs instead of the cat head bolts. If your building any kind of power, it becomes difficult to hold that head down! Great video, very informative, thanks for your recipe!

    • @bigrig_smilespergallon
      @bigrig_smilespergallon 8 днів тому

      If the machine shop decks your block and the liners, spacer plate, and shim gasket under the spacer plate are all perfectly machined parts, the liner protrusion should come out at .003". If you want a higher protrusion than that, you have to cut the counterbore for the liner down to, say... .028" and then put a .030" shim in the bore so that you end up raising the liner up by .002". And that would bring your protrusion up to .005".

    Finally!!!!!! an engine builder that has the right idea,, the only thing i disagree with is the use of a Marine cam,,, where the benefit of it comes from i cant say,, I had these idea's when i had a B module cat,,, the only thing to keep it in the operation temp was to give it more fuel,, which in turn made it use more fuel [ 4mph ] not one CAT man that's been the u tube has come out with this build yes they have built Racing Cat Engine but not one for Highway use,,, if one can do this follow this man's build use the parts that he recommends you'll have power to pull a load down the highway & up the steep hill,,, you'll be able to run the truck at 1350 to 1400rpms on the flats & see 6 & half to 8 mile to the gallon,,, my suggestion is to put a thirteen speed trans or an 18 speed behind the engine,, because this thing will twist a 10 speed into because of the horse power & torque it will build,, i don't even think an automatic would last long,, TWO THUMBS UP ON A GREAT BUILD

      Thanks for the reply and affirmations! I definitely tell guys that the marine cam is an option if they want to push it that far but that it's probably the last thing I'd add to the build. Personally, I probably wouldn't put one in unless my original cam was going bad. The guys who've done this build or similar with marine cam have really liked it. Not much keep up with them on the road. And I'm not big on outrageous power. I want an engine that will outlast AND out pull everything else. Really appreciate your feedback.

    Never heard them called 40 pin. 6NZ, 2WS, ect is all I’ve ever known them. Last company I drove for had 550 2WS engines with Jake’s and a brake saver. Brake Savers are a rarity now days. Kenworth w900 glider kits.

    • @bigrig_smilespergallon
      @bigrig_smilespergallon 11 днів тому

      Those are 70 pin engines. From 1995 to 1998 the ecm's had forty wire plugs for the harnesses. They made a bunch of changes with the 2WS including a new ecm that had seventy wires per plug. And the last of the C-15's (Acert's) were 120 pin. I've seen brakesavers at truck shows but never really been around them.
