Just a clarification. The direct drive washers were first offered in about 1981-82 through Sears in the 24” versions. The “Super capacity “ 27” direct drives first hit the market in about 1986 with Kenmore being first and Whirlpool in 1987 I believe. If somebody knows the exact years or dates please let me know.

This Washer is a perfect example of what real washing used to be like in vintage machines. Handled that load straight through (as it should) with no issues at all. 10/10 washer.
@@petermaz701 The woo woos are very pronounced on this load . All aspects of the sounds this Whirlpool makes takes me back to the early days of my mom’s 1963 Sears Kenmore 600. This Surgilator had no problem rolling that load.

8 Towels of this size is a good size load for this machine. Maybe 9 in the KA due to the DAA. I do between 11-13 towels this size per load in my SQ FL.
the wp direct drives have proven over the last 30 yrs that they were some of the best machines ever made ! the old belt drives b4 that had a lot more moving parts to break. both great machines and both stood the test of time. but if given the choice. id take a direct drive any day.......2nd generation 55yr old family owned appliance serv co. owner
@@michaelcollins1899 I would take a direct drive any day also, not because they're better performing machine that's for sure, but because they are easier to work on and parts are more available. As you said, both have stood the test of time and I like both machines. The chance to get a working belt drive in decent shape. I couldn't pass up. It will probably need a rebuild because of its age. It's already 2x past it's original life cycle. Though I know if I have a complete rebuild on it, it will probably be into the thousands of dollars.
@patcola7335 I've rebuilt so many for my dad at the shop , my fingers hurt thinking about it it was a time passed now in the world when u could rebuild a transmission for 40$ and have it back to customer the next day. now u toss them and buy new. I still have some old stock o. some of the parts lol 30 yrs later. 1 or 2 clutch kits, 2 or 3 single and double stage pumps, and a few pulleys and maybe a dozen belts ! I'm saving the pumps to make some type of water feature out of some day as they move water extremely well with little effort
@@michaelcollins1899 The thing is finding somebody today to rebuild one. Most techs today probably wouldn't even know how to work on one of the old belt drives. The 85 Whirlpool I just found several weeks ago was a blessing. It looks like it had some work done to it at some point because of the repair number on the top of the machine. @@maryrobert80 You're very welcome. It'll be back. I just want to make sure or get some idea of how much life this thing may have in. I don't want this thing spilling its guts all over my floor and having a flood.
Yay! a full load. Cleaning is via the items sloshing at the agitator fins, primarily the bottom fins, not the rollover per se. Rollover is to get all of the items through the lower zone, which happens numerous times during this 14-min wash period. It's nowhere near overloaded as some would fear, could take another towel or two or a few more small items with ease.
@@DADoESofTX Agreed! This is a machine that can wash to full capacity! That was a great agitator Whirlpool used for nearly 40 years in various revisions.
Look at that turnover! No modern washer today, save one of the transmission driven Speed Queens could wash as well as a Whirlpool Belt-Drive machine. I wish Whirlpool would go back to making these again. I would buy one in a heartbeat. The woo-woo sound is soooo soothing to listen to.
If a car could be compared to a washer, then this would be like a Cadillac from the same era with a large displacement V8. Very quiet, smooth and beautiful.
@@Celeron_619 That's a great analogy ! It really is a crying shame we can't just go to an appliance store and buy one of these today.
This 1985 Whirlpool Belt Drive Super Capacity Washer with the Double Duty Super Surgilator with wings handled this full load beautifully! No Dual Action Agitator needed! My Speed Queen TC5 with the Curved Flex Vane Agitator has similar washing action and capacity! The Dual Action Agitator is not necessary!
@@robertgwisdala5795 Yes I bought a Speed Queen AWN432 back in early 2013 because it sounded like a belt drive and had the Surgilator looking agitator. Was a great machine. @@jeromedavis8575 Either the KitchenAid or the Whirlpool Gold for now. Honestly I would like to find another belt drive, but by another maker.
@@patcola7335 If you found a GE model T, would you film it?
One thing I’ve learned on AW along with the experience with my Whirlpool, always use the highest quality of detergent like Tide powdered. Lower end detergents both powdered and liquid tend to gunk up the center post and outer tub surfaces and as we all know, it’ll hold in moisture which will rot out the center post or outer tub. Hopefully the repairs I’ve made to the timer are successful and they should be since the timer worked on regular and gentle earlier this summer, but wasn’t wanting to engage into the spin on the Wash N Wear cycle. Even studied to see if the contacts open and close at the various times they are supposed to. If everything goes well, they will be more videos than you can imagine, even pre-recorded lots of videos of my Maytag A806 this summer and plan on recording more sometime next week.
Looking forward to that. Sean !
@@patcola7335 Hopefully everything works as intended, though I don’t want to get my hopes up too much incase it doesn’t end up working after all. May want to study the contacts again just to be sure.
Very true indeed. Another contributing factor tends to be people always shut the lid after use which traps in moisture. I don't even think about it anymore. The lid is always opened after each cycle.
Hands down the best washer that whirlpool made ! Unlike today’s HE washers that use less water more electronics Junk

Great Video Pat, How are you liking this machine so far and will it be a keeper for you??? Has your drying time been much longer now since this machine doesn't spin as tight as the machines of today??? For me I wouldn't care about a little longer drying time, I would own this washer again in a heartbeat!!!
Hi Robert ! I really like this machine! Oh yes this machine is definitely a keeper. I plan on pulling it out of service soon and inspecting it some more to see what shape things are in. There is some rusting on the top edge of the metal outer tub... Especially in the area where the fill flume spray is aimed. Not bad but it's there . Drying times have been a little longer but this machine doesn't fart around. It fills incredible quick which I loved about these and just gets to business. As much as I also like the direct drive washers, let's be honest, their wash action does not compare to an older belt drive. The surgilator was always my overall favorite agitator. If for any reason I would get rid of it, it will only go to a collector who truly knows how to work on these machines and loves the Whirlpool belt drives.
I noticed that the wash drain is the standard four mins for a super-capacity model but the rinse drain is two mins. I didn't notice if that's the case on the other videos of this machine. Odd, if so. All drain periods reasonably should be four mins.
@@DADoESofTX I thought so also. I knew I wasn't imagining that. Maybe Whirlpool was tweaking these machines towards the end ?
The rinse agitation delay presumably is due to a Rinse-Fill increment in the timer. The fill took less than 2 mins (22:05 to 23:32) to attain the lower level, higher flow-rate on a warm fill (hot+cold). Agitation begins at 24:05, so there's the elapsed two mins. The timer would have advanced to (and stopped at) the rinse agitation increment if the fill took longer than two mins in which case agitation begins immediately when the fill is complete. A Rinse-Fill increment was a thing on belt-drives during the early years, possibly only on the Normal cycle (Delicate/Gentle, PP/WnW, and Knits may not have it). I would have figured WP eliminated it by this time but apparently not.
@@DADoESofTX Dadoes thank you soo much for your wealth of knowledge kind sir ! It's good to know these things. Such interesting machines these belt drives were. I may pull this out of service because I want to inspect it more and just do a going over. I know an old time repair man who loves the Whirlpool built machines. I don't know if he'll be interested in checking this out for me, but anyway this machine is a keeper !
I think that fill increment is because it was on the hot wash warm rinse
Miss my old whirlpool
Noticed that the sound of the air being pulled through the pump post-drain is actually a little bit quieter when draining out hot water. Maybe the heat in the pump dampens the sound?
@@vanni9283 I'm thinking it might have something to do with the sudsy wash. Maybe it muffles the sound more.

Ah another great wash from a er.. machine older then me.. very nice to see how much better these machines worked. They really don't make em like they used too, I refuse to buy a hardly efficient, just waiting for a nice used to show up local on Craigslist, it's tough tho theirs folks I would rather not buy something like a washing machine from.. Not to impugn anyone, it's just a thing, wish those machines were still the norm, I like the rough, gear box, powerful motor, option to fill tub, wasteful or not, I pay the water, last time I checked. And it's not as if water is used and then goes away from forever, out creatior in his wisdom made water last forever, and it's filtered for free and fall from the sky's, contaminate free. Just to think we drink water that may have been sewage, or even been in someone else's body or an animals, likely has been. So the whole waisting water is another govt attempt to fool the foolish to thinking they care or there is a issue with the environment. Just like EV cars, which end up being much less efficient, and pollute when their massive battery's die, theirs nothing can be done, just landfill it which is worse then landfilling most trash.. their dangerous too lithium batterys are very flammable, so no option to crush them and re cycle them like you can do with a gas car.. and to charge them ususes so much electricity which comes from horrible coal burning power plants, well like 80 percent, which belt out more CO2 and other nasty stuff much worse then 100 cars. But voters aren't gonna look into things like that.. now I can't get a decent machine to clean my dirty cloths unless I wanna spend over 1k, or buy used, all cause most ppl are more then swayed by bumper sticker policies. And elect bumper sticker politicians. Don't be one of those.. sorry went on tangent, made comment to long. Good video tho, thx agiflo. This model is an old KitchenAid direct drive machine made my whirlpool whirlpool quit making KitchenAid laundry about 20 years ago the parts for this machine are in NLA machines back in the day
This is a perfect example of how the older machines can actually save water if you know what you are doing. You can tailor the water level on these whereas in the new machines, especially top loaders, it's either auto sense or deep wash. On my 4816 VMW, I pretty much use deep wash most of the time, because auto sense is useless for anything above half a load. There's no such thing as, say, three fourths of a tub of water to do a medium-large load of laundry like you did here.
@@rynerobinson903Correct. I've used VMW agitator washers for the last 4 years and overall like the performance BUT the lack of versatility and control got to me after awhile. I had the 4816 also for a very brief time and sold it when I got the Maytag commercial MVWP586GW. The problem with whirlpool's auto level control is that it underfills on auto. I do notice though that there is four distinct water levels on those machines that I've seen when I've used them. Had the Amana 4516,Whirlpool 4616 and 4816. Each of them had four distinct water levels but the machine determines what it fills to. I don't like having part of the load sticking out of the water.
