yellow and blue gets grey
This video demonstrates blue and yellow make grey. This kind of color mixing is called average additive color mixing. It is how our eyes mix colors together. It is also why the Impressionistic paintings look so different from traditional paintings. After seeing this video, do you still believe blue and yellow mix green?

What is the primary color?
Переглядів 4,1 тис.Рік тому
This short video clarifies the concept of the primary color. The traditional teaching of the color has misled the artist community to believe that red, yellow, and blue are "primary colors" and they can not be mixed from other colors. This video tells artists that cyan, yellow, and magenta can mix much large range of colors, and artists should consider the CYM system as their primary colors.
blue mix yellow
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Рік тому
Does blue mixed with yellow make green? Well, it is not always. This short video demonstrates 3 cases of blue mixing with yellow: additive mixing, subtractive mixing, and paint mixing. We also demonstrated the mixing path of blue and yellow does not follow a straight line, as we thought it would. This curved mixing path explains why blue and yellow paint mixing produces green. Thanks to Melanch...
Color Tinting Experiments
Переглядів 858Рік тому
I have noticed a phenomenon in oil color mixing: If we mix an oil color with white (tinting), the hue of the color changes. For some colors this hue shifting is quite large( for instance: transparent orange changed from red to orange, then even to yellow). At this moment, I can not explain what is going on. Of course, the light source color and the camera white balance may have a systematic err...
Ultramarine Tinting Analysis

This video demonstrates how I analyze the mixing process of ultramarine blue and white, which is called "Tinting". I have used "Color Analyzer" app, located on my website: qhart.com, to analyze the tinting process. The app is free for anyone to use. This mixing experiment has shown that ultramarine tinting does not follow our theoretical understanding, but it involves noticeable hue change duri...

My first birding

Birding is new to me, but I immediately got hooked. I feel there is kind of spiritual connection between myself and the nature through birding. When I watch birds I can temporarily forget myself and only merge into the enjoyment of the nature's art. I really do not need to paint another painting, the nature is already perfect, the best art has already been created. Music for this video is Emoti...

Abstract to Realistic

This video documented my last painting of 2022. It is almost a pure palette knife painting. I want to share some of the detail of this painting and demonstrate how the abstract beauty comes out of a representational work. Waterlilies have been my favorite subject matter to paint. Its endless possibilities amazes me. I will explore more and share my art journey with you.
2022 Paintings

This video contains almost all the paintings I have done in the year of 2022. As matter of fact, I do not consider I personally did all those paintings. They are all manifestations of the Devine. Usually, people talk about the new year’s resolution at this time. We want to use what we’ve learned and hope to correct the path of life toward a better direction. 2022 is a special year for the world...

This video documents my painting process of my recent painting "Surgeons at Work". It shows the step by step procedure I have used to create a relatively large painting from a reference photo. For a figurative or narrative painting, the most important issue is drawing with the correct proportion. I have used my home made apps to help me to achieve this goal. Following are the links to the apps:...

I may have asked you about the Munsell Color System when I was at the Derek Penix workshop in Austin recently. I have not studied it deeply, but enough for it to help me see the color gamut as a sphere, not a wheel. The Munsell color notation system defines each "color" by three dimensions: hue, value, and chroma. I would be interested in hearing how this system from 1946 does or does apply to the research you've been doing? Thank you!

"What is primary" depend on how you define this word /// paint looks like cmy can make a large gamut , but doesn't work well for high-chroma red~orange~yellow /// in this definition , primary mean some physical entity (paint/like) can make a large gamut

(I'm a year late, I know) That's what I thought initially but later found out that's not actually true. Even pure blue and the pure yellow will still give you green. The colors on the color wheel all follow curved paths.
