Foraging for Dye Stuff // Collecting Sycamore Bark which has fallen off // simple biking adventure
I went on a simple biking adventure where I went foraging for dye stuff. I read somewhere that dyeing with sycamore bark produces a reddish color and wanted to try it out. It is really easy to collect the sycamore bark after it sheds and as a bonus you don’t have to worry about damaging the tree as this shedding is a natural process sycamore trees go through during the summer months.

MEND WITH ME: Mending my Tie on Pocket with a Bar Tack
Переглядів 49Рік тому
Join me for a cup of tea and some mending. Today I’m mending my tie on pocket using a bar tack. After more than a year of near constant use, one of the ties where it connects to the pocket ripped out. Thankfully only the stitching broke, so it is an easy mending job. To prevent the same thing from happening again I added a diagonal free floating bar tack to add extra reinforcement kinda like a ...
SEW WITH ME: 18th Century Quilted Tie-on Pocket // relaxing sewing vibes

The solution to your pocket problems is an 18th-century pocket. In the 18th century, pockets were a separate garment that could be tied about the waist as needed. Historically they were worn under or over one's clothing. I’ve been wearing this one for over a year and am finally sharing my process of making this quilted pocket. Historic pockets were either embroidered or pieced by hand with what...

    First of all, you're absolutely right. The sound of scissors cutting is somehow soothing and reassuring for me. It takes me away from the pressures in my life. Thank you for sharing this video, and the tips you include. I was looking to make a padded ironing board cover. The one I have has gone quite stiff and had in the spot where I obviously do most of my ironing. Even when it's wzshed it remains stiff. This suggests to me that it must be a polyester material that has melted and fused but I can't see because there is a fabric backing. I think the simpler option is to make a couple of covers and update the separate padding using a wool or cotton batting using your tips. Best wishes, 🇦🇺💖🌹

    So you had your stove burner on high for 4 hours? That is so much electricity to use. I don't mind spending the actual time doing whatever needs to be done, but having a large burner on for 4 hours seems a lot. Maybe I'm not understanding. Thanks!

    • @TheIntuitiveArtificer
      @TheIntuitiveArtificer 11 місяців тому

      There is an energy cost to dyeing and keeping large amounts of water hot. Historically this would have been fueled by wood while most modern day people seem to use some form of portable propane or gas stove. In terms of my electricity usage the 4hours of having a burner on high equates roughly to leaving a few lights on all day so not more than a dollar or two on my energy bill. Hope this puts things into perspective.

      @TheIntuitiveArtificer they likely went to public places to dye also with lots of dyeing pots on cooker. Its appealing to myself to do it outside on wooden burner. But that size pots needed for large amounts of fabric today they wouldn't make them.

      I love my treadle machine! It’s the only one I own though I do occasionally borrow my parents. The only thing I occasionally miss compared with a more modern machine is being able to stitch backwards, but if you plan accordingly it doesn’t actually matter. I’ve actually had this machine in a working state for over three years at this point and I love finding excuses to use it.

  • @kogabear1
    @kogabear1 Рік тому

    I’m one of the lucky ones to have found a 66 from the original family that brought it back in 1917. There is a learning curve, I can only imagine how people learned to sew with them without the internet. It has become my favorite machine. The simplicity of it makes it complex. I fully appreciate the engineering of it especially considering there’s no gears in any of it. Anyone considering a treadle machine, find someone who is willing to let you sew with it and if you still decide you want one be patient. I waited quite awhile before I found the one I have. The fun and enjoyable part of using a treadle is the sewing at least for me is the same but different. Quilting is pretty much the same but making garments takes a little more planning, after all it’s about the next step up from hand sewing which is still involved with sewing on the treadle. Thank you for the wonderful video, it really is as peaceful and relaxing as you showed it to be.

    You could use tin snips and cut the qire to fit inside the pot. And then as your plants grow use wire cutters and make a bigger hole for the plant as needed. It would look much better and work for the whole grow. Im going to do something similar with bird netting this year as its easier to use. And i can put 2 layers across my beds and cut tiny holes to plant my babies in. I love my squirrels so I do what I can to keep them from digging. Ive also used lava rock around planta and they leave them alone. But this year bird netting secured to the beds and a little mulch over too and nobody will know its there and the squirrels will get discouraged and go elsewhere to bury their treasures.

    • @TheIntuitiveArtificer
      @TheIntuitiveArtificer Рік тому

      If I cut holes for plants to grow through I wouldn’t be able to use the same protector year after year. This year I’m growing arugula under the protector because the sides extend down farther and I can put a stick to prop it up higher so that things have more room to grow before removing it. In my experience the squirrels won’t bother my plants once they are well established.

      Wood doesn’t like to soak in vinegar for too long but a good wipe/scrub shouldn’t hurt it. I use white vinegar as main household cleaner. Other types of vinegars could cause stains especially any that have a color. If you are worried about it drying the wood out, after you clean the wood with vinegar just apply a small amount of flaxseed or linseed oil which will help protect the wood.

      This is something I’m still struggling with. The project starts with a header band with the warp of the full project being the weft of the header. Basically I didn’t know how dense to make the warp threads when I started, so it definitely has shrunk a bit from when I started. The way I have kept the tension as even as possible is by being as consistent as possible when pulling the weft thread through (leaving about a toothpick size loop on the opposite end). I know there are tensioner for normal looms but I haven’t looked into them to see if they would work for my vertical one.

      I’m using a durable cotton thread here and I haven’t noticed any weakening. For something that is looser spun or a fluffier thread I could see how this might have more potential to wear down over time. Also the amount of tension from the weights is probably less than what your standard loom operates at which helps reduce the wear of this motion.

      This is a link to a place that sells machine parts or accessories for all sorts of vintage machines. : www.vintagesingerparts.com/products/treadle-sewing-machine-leather-belt-3-16-x-72-part-p60013 I had gotten my sewing machine belt from a local sewing machine repair person my dad knew, but when purchased my machine it was missing the needle clamp and I got a replacement from the company I linked above. Hope this helps :)
