Yay you’re back! Good luck with the flax. I look forward to seeing some linen getting made. Oddly when I planted mine last year and this year, none of the squirrels or birds took it, even though we’re overrun with them. Will try this sort of thing over beds if they become a problem, though. Bending over the pokey bits for safety was a good touch. Probably well worth the extra effort. Just got my food plot planted. My neighbors with their perfect rows of tomatoes must be appalled because my main approach to gardening involves throwing seeds around and just letting natural selection take care of the rest. Are you familiar with permaculture/food forestry?
Yes I'm back! So far my flax is a couple inches tall which is exciting. Forget the neighbors and embrace the chaos gardening as long as it brings you joy it doesn't mater what anyone else thinks. Permaculture is definitely a fascinating subject that I'm currently learning more about.
You could use tin snips and cut the qire to fit inside the pot. And then as your plants grow use wire cutters and make a bigger hole for the plant as needed. It would look much better and work for the whole grow. Im going to do something similar with bird netting this year as its easier to use. And i can put 2 layers across my beds and cut tiny holes to plant my babies in. I love my squirrels so I do what I can to keep them from digging. Ive also used lava rock around planta and they leave them alone. But this year bird netting secured to the beds and a little mulch over too and nobody will know its there and the squirrels will get discouraged and go elsewhere to bury their treasures.
If I cut holes for plants to grow through I wouldn’t be able to use the same protector year after year. This year I’m growing arugula under the protector because the sides extend down farther and I can put a stick to prop it up higher so that things have more room to grow before removing it. In my experience the squirrels won’t bother my plants once they are well established.
