COPPERHEAD CROSSING
Jesse helps a huge copperhead cross a busy trail, and teaches some strangers about venomous snakes in the process.
"October is breast cancer awareness month, and cancer treatment is an emerging area in venom research! Did you know that contortrostatin, a protein found in copperhead venom, has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors, slow angiogenesis (the growth of blood vessels into the tumor that supply it with nutrients and allow the tumor to grow and spread), and also helped prevent metastasis (the spread of cancer cells to new areas of the body) in studies of mice implanted with human breast cancer cells?!"

Close call feeding a reticulated python

PLEASE DO NOT TRY FEEDING LARGE SNAKES WITHOUT EXPERIENCED SUPERVISION! Many snakes have a strong feeding response, and reticulated pythons are no exception. They are the longest snakes in the world, and they are always trying to eat and grow. We feed our large constrictors with long tongs for our own safety, because we know they can strike several feet out of their cages. And during a feeding ...

    Cant always depend on that. Best to remember the shape of their heads.

    • @ForgottenFriendReptileTV
      @ForgottenFriendReptileTV 3 місяці тому

      I don’t teach the head shape method because most harmless snakes may also flatten their head shape when threatened. At least the Hershey kiss pattern is something that is easily recognizable from a safe distance, and copperheads without this pattern are a statistical anomaly.

    • @ForgottenFriendReptileTV
      @ForgottenFriendReptileTV 3 місяці тому

      Thanks! Safety is definitely the main priority when it comes to venomous snakes. I’m not against wearing boots and chaps…but I focus more on teaching my kids how to keep a safe distance and only step where they can see their feet. Hopefully that will give them skills that keep them safe in all situations.
