Great video, It sold me on the RME UFX 3. Best purchase I've ever made for my studio
I Have The Red 16 For About 2 Years Its Greet No Probs Good Sound With Two Octopre it Gives me 16 strero Out To My Two Dangerous 2Bus+ Plus Eq And To My Neve MBC
Is your studio in a shed? If so, looks great!
Thanks very much! Yes it is in a shed. I really hope to do a video series soon about it and how it came about.
Oh what a bummer with the Orion. I think I had the exact same issue on my first Orion Gen 1 like ten years ago. I solved that by just uninstalling the drivers and it worked flawlessly for some reason haha. I got the Gen 4 in February and it's been solid all the way. Don't really remember the issues with finding the software stuff. But yeah a lot of companies has really unintuitive websites. I don't fuck around with chasing stuff often so when I do It's allways a hassle trying to figure out where all different plugins are registered and licensing and all that. Great video!
ohhh you don't even know how much I would love to create custom firmware, driver and control software for antelope devices and share it opensource to flash your antelope and bring to this cool hardware new life.
I mean, go for it! I’m sure folks would appreciate it and it would be a welcome upgrade from whatever is floating around on the Antelope website. Unfortunately for me, that time has come and gone and I’m happier for it. But knock yourself out!
Damn that sucks. My orion 32+ gen 3 works damn well except once in a while I need to do a hard power recycle but I have it on a wifi outlet for that so I can do it from my phone.
That's the classic Antelope experience. It works until it doesn't and when it doesn't, there is barely to no support. They make great hardware, but they should stop releasing new interfaces every year which kills off the last gen ones and start actually taking care of their customers and fix the interfaces before ending its life cycle.
@@annekedebruyn7797 I havent had to contact support in like two years after they swapped my first unit for me because it had hardware issues. Oh actually I recently asked them if it was OK to move to sequoia yet and they got back to me in 24 hours. Not saying they are the greatest though thats for sure. YMMV!
Ps. Thank you for making this video, it helped explain a lot of stuff that was not available in such an easy to watch / understand format yet🙏🏼
Is this separate computer for recording recommended because of typical pc specs during release of this video? For example, I can imagine waves being worried about a single computer being able to handle the workload drivespeed wise. However my new macbook pro M2 has about 6GB/S internal storage drives, so one could state that no longer being an issue. Or am I missing something really important here that has to do with a whole different set of factors?
@@stefanmplayer that’s a good question. Honestly yes, most moderns computers COULD probably handle both. But building rigs for a tour, reliability is everything. Think of the days when your computers have been the most temperamental. Especially if they’re show critical things. you don’t want a kernel panic on a record machine to crash your waves control. In general, I trust computers as little as I possibly can.
bla bla bla... bad product.... bla bla bla no headphones ouput... bla bla bla I am a tech guy credability. Well maybe the problem was related to your computer? a Ye, bla bla bla bad software.... bla bla bla the support didn't answer my phone, but then I get in touch with them and they fixed my problem by downgrading the driver.... bla bla bla but then I decide to update the driver and see what is going to happen... bla bla bla... I like Focusrite. Thank you, you are dismissed. P.S. bla bla bla compare the price of this rednet to Orion32+ Gen.4. Also Rednet dynamic range of dante 119db vs 129 for Orion? AMAZING CONVERTERS DUDE, AMAZING :D
Mine didn't want to work, although I did everything in order. Then I found that post on Reddit where the guy write that you should download app for gen 3 and with it everything fell into place. As I understand it is connected with different revisions of interfaces, but why not write about it on the web site? Otherwise, the interface is cool, it really sounds well and virtual patchbey is amazing.
@thegeneralhoudini and @VladBornuz while that makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one having these issues, what a bummer right? I'm sure none of us bought that box thinking it was going to be a failure. Just crippled by bad software. Too bad.
nice video! and yeah, same experience with Antelope...worst decision ever, and just because I trusted the influencers on YT
I have had the exact same experiences with the exact same Antelope interface. I really hate Antelope now. It's been a very, very negative experience. I'm so tired of hearing influencers pretending it's great, but they obviously don't use it themselves. Good video.
My gen 3 works great for years now. Its a MEGA BEAST. It can be a little finicky once in a while but for the most part pretty rock solid!
@@osandsI’ve heard this before too! That the gen 3 is great. So my question is, what happened?!
@@ifitsoundsgood the first unit I got had channels that bled audio into other channels. New unit is perfect.
Can you use all the inputs from the interface to the daw via Dante? What would I miss out on if I didn’t have thunderbolt but I did have a 2.5 gig Ethernet port on the back of my pc
That's an interesting idea! I suppose that if you were ok with every default setting of the interface you could run Dante virtural soundcard on your PC and treat it like another network device. That idea is UNTESTED and just my best guess. What you'd loose is any functionality beyond that. The Rednet control app, any monitoring or routing option and firmware updates are all done vie the thunderbolt bus (or HDX if that's your flavor). And setting up what virtual channels get routed to monitors and things like that really do require the use of the control app. Overall, IMO I would not recommend that. You'd be loosing out on way too much of control of the interface.
i miss mixing multi tracks. when i did my batchelor in audio engineering it was such a great time. mixing on an SSL console also.
Since you're using really basic WAVES plugins, why even use it? Why not use what's onboard the SD9 and save a little complexity?
I miss just mixing vs all the tech shit
love from LAX warehouse!! i hope ill put an oreo in one of your gigs!
Would it be possible to go over lighting?
🥹 the cable management 🤙
Thank you fot the tour
That talkback system is solid. So quick question about the shared stage box: If you have to adjust your input gains on the fly, how do you avoid putting the f*** to your monitor person?
Digico has a system called gain tracking (I think). When engaged the console that does not have head amp control automatically adjusts digital trim to compensate. It’s pretty slick and works well.
Just Subscribed. Looking forward to learning. Future topics: Explain a piece of specific gear in detail and its applications.
Great Video! I've been doing more live sound work this year and can't wait to hit a tour eventually down the road, it's interesting how I understood most of the stuff you were talking about! Very informative, thank you so much!
Interesting use a Waves. Haven't moved into network audio myself, but have been exploring Waves and Dante and trying to decide. Currently in the smaller realm of AES50 which is point to point and not routable with a router to multi destinations. Any particular reason for going Waves over Dante?
The only reason I’m using a waves network is to use their processing and plugins. That network is only between the console, a computer and a waves server. It must be in the waves soundgrid protocol to use waves plugins. For just moving audio around place to place, Dante is incredible. I use quite a bit of Dante networking in my newer Yamaha video.
ua-cam.com/video/v6QV0N6AtLg/v-deo.html
@isettech - while Dante and Waves SoundGrid both use networks, they do fundamentally different things. Dante is for moving sound between many endpoints on a network. SoundGrid is mainly for processing audio on a dedicated outboard DSP running Waves plugins, and sending it back to the source.
hey, thanks for the video. do you ever have more complicated mixing bussing, and fx for a live show, does it ever get to like mixing in the studio with all the waves plug ins at your disposal on a live rig? thanks
Thanks for the question! This show in particular had a pretty straightforward input list, check out my newer Yamaha Rivage video (ua-cam.com/video/v6QV0N6AtLg/v-deo.html) That has many more inputs and a more involved bussing and mixing strategy. I’d say that technology is taking live mixing closer and closer to mixing in a studio. There are still some factors that make it different like at this point it is very difficult to get many different manufacturers plugins in one system. And from a reliability standpoint, I can’t afford a “buffer error” or something while mixing a show. 🙃
Would've appreciated even more on the PA, ie., which boxes, ... alignment, sub strategy etc.
Hey there! I’ll remember this for the future. However at this point (as was the case in this video) the PAs I work on are usually an install or are provided without a whole lot or any input from me. “PA du jour” if you will. I’ll do a video soon on how I handle system tuning and management!
@@ifitsoundsgood It's all good... seriously, all of it. I appreciate the content. Just bummed not seeing the rig. First World issue if there ever was one!
killer mix !!
Thank you very much Sir☕🍰🍟🍔🥤
Great video!
Great video. Got the same console on a festival in a few weeks so I'm now looking forward to some 1073 action!! Thanks for sharing, great vid!! 👍🏻
Neat!
Thanks for sharing, this was a great video. Looking forward to more.
It was great working with ya in Warren OH
Hey man, really appreciate this run down. How would you compare the sound to “certain other festival console”? If ya can even answer that :).
This very popular console brand is popular for good reason, no doubt. Extremely transparent, Uncolored and very flexible. They really are blank canvases. I like all the coloring options of Rivage and how easy it was to get so many flavors. With others I feel like I have to work so much harder to get there.
What's the pa?
At the moment we are not traveling with a PA so it’s different everyday. Situations like that of “PA du jour” make having a Lake indispensable. For that day in particular it was a d&b V rig.
Really nice rundown, thanks!
Great Video! Love it!
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Great video. I have a quick question. Do you think that the A15’s with the KS21 subs scale well to 5,000 outdoor for rock levels, and if so, how many monitors per side do you think at what total wattage it would require? I was planning to scale-up my current L’Acoustics, as I love their sound.
Hey Andrew. I am going to be completely honest with you. I am definitely not a systems engineer, and I’m not an expert with L’acoustics, despite there being one behind me in this video. (It was hired locally, not on tour with me) From what I know about them though, I would think A15s would struggle with 5000 people. K2 would be great. Maybe the new K3 box. But I am seriously no expert. Good luck!
L'Acoustic claims that 4x A15 per side and 4xS21 per side will cover up to 5,000 people. Check out their intro video on the A-series on YT.
Really enjoyed this and your peli video!
I’ve seen a lot of rigs with those old style XLR connections, any idea why those are still used rather than all the new Neutrik connections? I’m just curious.
what?
They still work great, they’re easily serviceable. If you’re a big provider like Clair and you have a ton of one kind of cable already, if it ain’t broke…😅
GREAT VIDEO!! At2:55 what's the lake lm44 for? 4 in 4 out?
Yes, the Lake is used for system (PA) management. I use it in conjunction with Smaart to precisely input delay times to the different zones of the PA I might be feeding ie Front Fills or Subs. I also like the Lake because any EQ I want to put over the PA for my taste is completely phase coherent EQ handled by its DSP, unlike most/all EQ that you might find on a console or a graphic EQ. And also being able to walk around and EQ wirelessly from a tablet is huge. Like you said, it is 4 in and 4 out. AES or Analog. In this case I'm using the analog ins and outs, my current rig is all AES. There are tons you can do with them and I'm just scratching the surface. Find anyone who regularly deploys large scale PAs and they'll blow your mind what they can do.
Hi Tom, Love the videos, carrying on from this, you go from your console to the Lake then where does the 4 outputs go from the lake in terms of cabling, is there an analog snake running down to stage to feed the FOH amp racks etc or ran a different way? Many thanks
50 Ohm BNC has the white dialectic material around the pin so you can see just by looking at the connector what the impedance is.
I can't do the thumb track ball on my desk... I shake to much! lol
I swear I’ve used so many different types of weird mice. It seems like everyone it out to reinvent the mice out there.
Do an update video!
Sadly I'm no longer on this setup. But I will say, the entire tour went off without a hitch. It was super reliable!
Hello Tom, I am Not able to see SG driver in the Multirack device connections under Mutiracvk Audio Tab? any advice? Thank you for any assistance
Hey! I’m in a similar situation with console setup and I/O. Just curious in your signal flow diagram, are you returning your FOH mix back down AES50 to the stage box? Or are you using local I/O and patching into a house (or drive console/processor) I have found a way to return my L/R mix and effectively use my M32 core as a drive console. But, it’s very “Janky”... Especially when using multiple scenes for different artists. Just curious what your final routing in this setup looks like. Also have you tried using the M32C as the I/O for LV1 since you posted this video? Any success?
Hey Andrew. The way I understood it, because the “monitor console” has control of the outputs, there wasn’t a way to send my L/R to it. I did my main outputs locally. Haven’t had the chance to play with an LV1 yet. Jumped onto a different tour with an S6L. Maybe another waves craziness video to come haha.
