The Philippine Islands were under an American colonial government for nearly 50 years in the last century after a bloody campaign to pacify the native population. That’s why there is a lot of American influence on the local culture. It is strange though that your A/C controller was in °F and not in °C as is the norm. At any rate, welcome to the country and may you have a pleasant and safe stay, and enjoy our famous hospitality. Cebu is one of the earliest places to get introduced to Spanish culture and Catholicism. Cebuano is the more commonly used language in the area. It is one of the major languages spoken in the Philippines, there being nearly 200 indigenous languages on record.

This is the second time I have relocated to the Philippines, and yes... the American influence is one of the few things I actually don't like about the country, other than that; people are friendly, it is still cheap and they start celebrating Christmas on September 1st ;) Thankfully, typhoon season is at an end... look forward to your adventures in Cebu.

The Philipines is the most American Asian country. The main languages are English and Tagolog. They love American culture and media. The Philipines changed hands from hundreds of years as a Spanish colony to a US one around 1900. The US gave the PH their independence just in time for Japan to take them over in WWII. Freed from Japan in 1944-45 back to Independant since. They are not as advanced in infrastructure as Thailand or Vietnam but the beaches and falls are to die for, enjoy!
