Hey. So I’m thinking of adding the streetfighter to the mix. I’m torn. Would love to have all the top bikes in this naked category.......but. Is it worth having all the same type even though they all ride different ? Just wondering others thoughts and possibly helping out on decision. Thanks

2020 r1250 GSA final drive shaft failure breakdown
Переглядів 29 тис.4 роки тому
Just broke down on highway. Had to be towed home and then towed again next day to dealer. Dealer fixing the final driveshaft. They said they sent the entire unit to Germany and are replacing it entirely. Not sure if anyone else has been having problems? Getting set up for Alaska and I’m totally discouraged.
2020 bmw GSA r1250 starting issue / hard start / replaced battery feb 8 2020

This is now the bike with a software update ( what I’m being told ). I installed a new battery with 220 CCA ( non LiPo ) dealer can’t get me a new stock battery which they said was bad. Stock is 102 cca I believe If it was the battery then why is it still present ? It is less then with the stock battery but it still exists even with more then double the CCA. Was about 37 degrees F and sunny today.

So this is stock battery checked and confirmed in good working order. Bike updated and checked for issues. Given an all clear from dealer. It was 21 degrees f about 35 in garage. Seems a little better now after update but NOT right yet. Just updating where I’m at.

I've been riding Goldwings since 1976. I've owned a '76, '81, '85 and a 2005. I still have the '81 and '05. The '76 was totaled when I went lowside at 75 MPH on a road I should have been doing 35-40 MPH. It was a total rookie mistake, I lost situational awareness on a road I had ridden hundreds of times. I rode the bike into a decreasing radius corner the had a drop off about half way into the curve. I ground two inched off of the side stand and left about 100 feet gouge in the road that was there until it was resurfaced about 20 years later. Despite the bike riding on the tires and side stand I had full control and I just watched the edge of the road getting closer, I lost it at the edge of the road. The back wheel of the back wheel led the biker into the ditch somewhere slower than 75 mph, Then the bike catapulted me off and flipped onto its back burying the top of the Vetter windshield into the dirt. I rolled along next to the bike into a tall grass field with the bike tumbling next to me. To the day I remember every second. At 22 YO I thought I was going to die that night. On the '81 I was late to work one morning (I live in the Seattle area). It was a rainy early morning and there was a car slowing me down. I went to pass and didn't see the sand on the road from the last time it was sanded during ice. The rear slid out on the right side. If you have ever dropped a four cylinder Wing then you know they will only fall to about a 45 degree angle. That is what happened. When I came out of the sand the tires bit and flipped the bike into a high side. At this point I was just along for the ride. I've had my motorcycle endorsement since 1975. It has been the only time I've gone lowside - highside. I'm hear to tell you it is a very violent thing. The energy is amplified when the bike goes low- to high and I was very lucky to not be pitched off the bike. I rode on to work. And since then I have been contemplating the fantastic engineering design work of Honda Motorcycles and Michelin motorcycle tires. I think it is absolutely stupid to F@#% around with car tires on a motorcycle. You will never know when you need a motorcycle's full turning performance in a less than perfect traction situation.
Its crazy I just put motorcycle tires on my f150 2/10 don't recommend.
Try dropping the PSI to around 32 for a CT on the rear. Been Darksiding for 3 years now on a 2005 GL1800 and have experimented with 40 PSI down to 30 PSI. 40 PSI is spot on for a GL1800 motorcycle tire. Currently running a Pirelli P1 CT on the rear, stock tire on the front.
just happened to me on the motorway 77k miles 2019 r1250 gs no more warranty on the bike how much will it cost me ? bmw didn't want to change the shaft . when i came to the dealer at 70k miles they said i had to wait 80k for a free new shaft drive now look at the result 😢 i hope nothing else is broken 🙏🏽
scrap.
You’re lucky it hasn’t locked the rear wheel whilst doing 75mph as it did on my 2002 R1150 GSA in the middle of Germany. I was so fortunate as I only began to accelerate from the service station onto the motorway doing 25mph, otherwise I would most probably dead by now. I would always prefer shaft drives due to less maintenance but BMW can’t get them right anymore. Japanese can make them simpler and a lot more reliable.
Wet weather traction is a night and day difference, at least it was on my Voyager XII I went darkside on. Definitely going dark with my GW as soon as I go through it and get ready to ride it (just bought this 1995 SE)
Well... I just installed a "Radar 195/65R16" car tire on my 2003 Goldwing, 24-08-07. It was tight but got it in place without any prying tools. Looks good too. Also installed Eco beads for balancing.
The red switch is for emergency only. To turn off the bike , you press the button that’s near the steering wheel
I have a warning light on my MV Agusta 2023 f3 the dealer says the bike is fine and they “think” it’ll go away after the first service
I own a 2019 R1250 GS Adventure which I bought new and I live in Victoria, Australia. I will keep this as short as possible and try and avoid going into any details that readers and fellow owners already know. I have experienced all the starting problems that have been documented by riders around the world for four years. The sudden and unexplained no-start events, the myriad of TFT screen fault messages etc. I do not know if this problem applies to every MY but it certainly applies to MY19, MY20 and MY21 as I have read user complaints online. I have used a total of four AGM batteries in four years, Exide (which caused problems in the first 3 weeks of bike delivery), Deka, Yuasa and SSB, all have been either 200 CCA or 240 CCA batteries. Batteries have always been fully charged and able to pass a load test when the bike failed to start and have been connected to an appropriate charger when the bike has not been in use. So battery problems are not confined to a specific batch of Exide batteries that were factory fitted by BMW when the bike was new. My son has an R1200 GS Adventure, he has used the same AGM batteries, and he has had zero starting problems over the four years that I have owned my bike. Regardless of the healthy status of all four AGM batteries the starting problems have always suggested that a battery power problem existed. Any mature vehicle system does not require changes to valve clearances, or require pushing whilst in gear, or any other unusual or creative change to get the vehicle to start. Does anyone have to do that with their car? Standard comments from BMW dealers have included ‘cannot replicate the fault’ and ‘they all do that’ along with others. Is BMW Motorrad really happy with that state of affairs? It has appeared so. I purchased a GOOLOO GP2000 lithium jump starter, it is small, light, and quick and easy to use. I carry it in my top box and it started the bike every time I needed it to. The bike started instantly and essentially proves that the complete starting circuit is serviceable provided that sufficient cranking power is available. BMW obviously made significant changes (mechanical & electrical) from the R1200 GS Adventure to the R1250 GS Adventure. When making those configuration changes did they carry out a detailed Power Management study under all user operating conditions, in all environments that users operate these bikes in, and over a reasonable period of time to ensure that the starting circuit for instance, from the battery right through to the starter motor and everything in-between, were compatible and actually worked? Only BMW know the answer to that question. I used the GOOLOO GP2000 for many months on many occasions to prove to myself that the starting circuit is serviceable enough to be operated as designed, and as delivered on the bike when it was new. Once I was convinced that the problem was the power source then I researched a safe and more capable alternative. You can research the various chemistries of Lithium batteries yourselves if you wish, I selected Lithium (Li) Iron (Fe) Phosphate (PO4) which is LiFePO4, it’s the safest battery chemistry and fit for purpose. I purchased a SSB Powersport Lithium Ultralite, LiFePO4, LFP14H-BS, 150mm X 87mm x 93mm. The battery came complete with screw on plastic spacers to raise the battery height to suit the motorcycle battery compartment. The bike now enthusiastically starts first time every time, under all conditions and as it should have done when I purchased it in the first place. I finally have the bike that I thought I purchased four years ago. Ignition has improved and all lights and displays have improved. If this problem went away at some production point then what was changed during production and why don’t all users know about it? Prior to starting the bike the ‘My Vehicle’ screen on the TFT display always shows a battery voltage approaching, or at, 13 volts. I have an Ozcharge OC-PRO80L 12 volt 480ma LiFePO4 battery charger which I have not used again since I charged the battery when it was new straight out of the box. As soon as the charger tells you that the battery is fully charged then disconnect the charger. I have a charging pigtail lead fitted to the bike and I check the battery voltage with a meter via this lead before using the bike. The battery voltage is now always between 13.27 volts and 13.30 volts. The most the voltage ever drops in a week or more is 0.01 volts (1/100th of a volt) which is probably due to the bike internal clock and maybe a standby function of the keyless start module. The bike charging system is capable of keeping the battery charged and I will only use the battery charger/maintainer if the battery voltage ever drops below 13 volts which it hasn’t done and so far doesn’t look like it will. You do NOT, and SHOULD NOT, keep the appropriate battery charger/maintainer connected to your bike when the bike is not in use. Do I leave the GOOLOO GP2000 at home? No I don’t as I may meet a fellow R1250 GSA rider one day who is stuck at the side of the road/trail or next to a fuel pump in a service station because his bike will not start.
Do you still have the Brutale? Can you do a 2-years review? Thx
Hi, recently sorted this @CLLUK
Much better braking also...
Thanks. What make and model tire is it that fits a GW? I ride one too.

Hi just wanted to ask does the spare key come in the box in the key holder?
Coming up on 4600 odometer miles. What's everyone's oil change intervals on the 800s?
Confirmed, doable on the 2022 Turismo Veloce Lusso 🤌🇮🇹
Start your engineeeeeeeee😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sold my Gs’21. Less headache. Never again It’s a beautiful bike but…
What is the failure rate of your MV Agusta? something has broken?
I am facing the same problem with a 2022 BMW C400GT with only 4400km. Lack of material quality. It is not normal for BMW to fail in such simple things.
Have a 2016 GS1200 with over 40k miles. Dealer just replaced the final drive in a recall. Something to do with a seal that might leak water in and developing corrosion. I was happy to get the free service. Might be the reason yours failed. However, this was posted in 2020 and you have a 2020, so it would have to be very rapid corrosion.
Just a stop drop then those fins are gone ... if there is no provision for a slider or safeguard it could be a bloom of little beautiful flower and not more..
Oooo the bw bashing is wonderful . Its a mechanical thing that can break. Every single make of bike breaks , has broken , will break . Reality . 6th bmw without anything major . Backup service is way better than any other make out-there.
I just got a new drive shaft at 7K miles! Mine failed the test for the drive shaft! Hopefully I don't have this problem!
Do you know how to put the bike into pairing mode so I can connect it to the app?
good old bmw shafts...crap
Damn that’s awesome! Worked on my 21 Turismo RCS! Dealer said they were only ones that could do it. BS … thanks for the help … 600 mile service done and no more service interval warnings! I prefer to do all my own maintenance, and the paint is crazy soft.
My 2021 e4 dragster the same, very soft paint, my Superveloce with metallic yellow, has clear coat thats a tuff finish
Yesterday I had the same problem on my trip. Drive shaft broke on the highway at 150 kmh but I managed to stop safely. When I stopped, my rear wheel was blocked so I couldn't move the bike other than put it in the first gear and roll the throttle . The sound was really bad, I thought the whole gearbox and shaft were smashed but fortunately only shaft was damaged. The bike is now at the dealer and they will replace it for free under warranty. UPDATE: BMW mechanic told me that the reason for this breakdown could be me driving with suspension settings on MAX all the time (50k kms on ODO). I'm tall so it was ok for me but now I have to compromise and put it in AUTO. Any thoughts on this theory?
at all times, even till you drag the side of the bike, you will actually have more rubber on the road than any motorcycle tire. Now on a much lighter bike i think a car tire might feel a bit weird. The nearly 1000 lbs goldwing kinda forces the tire to nearly conform as you turn in your video here. Being as bikes like the goldwing see 90% straight line interstate this makes perfect sense to do this.
they acknowledged the issue just recently....Free check / repair. issue with the way stuff is designed and put together
I own a 2019 R1250 GS - bought it new, and I have put 75,000 miles on it, love the bike. Take care of it really well. Had exact same thing break on mine, was doing about 70 MPH and just outside of Glacier National Park (1/2 way on a planned 7 state, Rocky Mountain, tour with 2 biker buddies). Had to tow it back to Albuquerque, NM where I live, as I trust our dealer here and have known them for years..... It is an official recall as of July, 2022 for 2019 - 2021 R1250 GS/GSA models - and the BMW dealership will replace the whole thing for free at an authorized BMW dealership. There are 2 unicersal joints on the driveshaft (right where the rubber booties are) The universal joint up front by the transmission collects water vapor and the pin holding the universal joint together decays over time and breaks, thus the noise you hear. Mine when it broke actually started melting the outside paint on the swing arm by the universal and melted 50% of the rubber booty. simply put it caught fire and was smoking real bad when I finally pulled over, maybe 1/4 of a mile once the U-joint broke and started "clacking loudly" and I lost power to the rear tire... I was not on a road where I could pull over safely, so had to coast it into a parking lot of a closed equipment rental place in Whitefish, MT. BMW has recognized this as a problem and the "fix" is to have a drain hole near the universal joint on the swing arm. All the new 2022 R1250s have this on their swing arms. I do NOT ride it through streams and rivers, liek some of the 1-5% folks do. I ride it occasionally on gravel roads, but my bike is mostly street miles. So for folks that ride it across streams regularly they should check their driveshafts and universal joints regularly. I do however travel with it and will ride it through rain for a day or days depending on the travel plan. That's what caused mine to pick-up moisture and decay the pin. But I agree, a top shelf motorcycle like this, and 90+ years of motorcycles with driveshafts and this kind of manufacturing and engineering defects should NOT happen. I am glad BMW is paying for the repair (new driveshaft, new booties and new entire swing arm and hardware, most likely a $5-7K fix including labor. But I still had to leave a trip and some of my best friends that we had been planning for 5 months, and pay for a U Haul and U haul bike trailer to get it home to a dealership I trusted - and can work with locally. This happened on August 3rd, 2022, and I am still waiting for it to be fixed. The dealership has been great, they are waiting on a few parts from Germany. Not their fault. I have seen the swing arm and driveshaft - dealer showed me. They call it their "poster child" for the recall.... If you own one that has the recall - GET it done... The dealer even gave me for free a loaner bike so I can ride - as I ride daily. They know me and this is my 4th BMW. I have had many motorcycles over the years, like them all!
This video makes me not want to buy one now 🤣
@@madbroindustries The dealer repaired completely my driveshaft, at no cost. They even gave me a loaner bike for free to drive while being repaired. ALL NEW BMW'S WITH THIS PROBLEM (IT'S AN OFFICIAL RECALL) HAVE NEWLY ENGIONEERED DRIVESHAFTS AND SWING ARMS TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. Don't hesitate to buy one - the root cause of this problem has been resolved!
@@kenmonier9334 thank you for the info. What year did they start using the new design?
BMW have the same quality issues with their cars, I owned one "premium package" BMW for over $80,000 and everything from ABS, to Radiator and even power windows went bad, with constant repairs, I found out that BMW is merely using recycled plastic parts for everything they sell, from cars to motorcycles and even have some Third World countries make parts for them so they can save money, just like how they cut corners and placed two HAYES "BMW" labeled calipers up front and a BREMBO caliper in the rear, just to save money, really? This is why more riders are steering clear from BMW motorcycles and cars and BMW does not care a bit, because profit is all they care about.
I was going to buy one, you talked me out of it
Software ?
8K miles into a 10K mile 80/20 camping trip, my 2020 with 25K miles on it experienced the same issue in Colorado. Shipped to Santa Fe NM for repair, where I will return to complete the trip. BMW has been extremely supportive but certainly disappointing for a bike of this quality and cost.
Hello I have the same issue, final shaft is broken gsa 1250 from 2019
How is the torque on it? Is it extremely low down low as everyone is saying? I heard for 2021 they mad some changes to give it more torque down low in the rpms?
We need an update lol
Have nearly 90,000 on my 2010 1200GS and it’s been extremely reliable. At 70,000 miles I did install a driveshaft with grease-able U joints, as I was about to depart for the Arctic. I did it for my piece of mind, my old shaft was perfect. A driveshaft replacement is an easy job.
JUST. SELL ONE. IS. CALL. EVOLUTION. BOWTH. ARE. AWESOME..KIFE. GOES ON. EXPERIMENT. NEW. IS ALLWAYS. BETTER....BLESSED BE. SIR...😇
geez you sound so nervous on camera
It's sad that BMW didn't do a recall on the drive shafts. Mine r1200GS broke down after 32.000 kilometres due to rust inside. And just out of warranty. I have never been in anything then rain with my bike. Parts 1000 euro , then workshop free. Not good BMW.
what size and brand? getting tired of the crazy high prices for motorcycle tires
How did you balance it?
