Hi Steve, enjoy your video’s, just wondered what net handle you use looks nice and still, cheers mate tight lines , Dave
@davidpearson901 it's a Free Spirit CTX 4.5 metre, about the best long handle available
The swim looks lovely. Where is it Steve.
@@robertoliverfishingdaysout that's om the Severn in Bewdley, my local water
Blanking is all part of Barbel fishing.
Really enjoying the match style way of catching barbel. Much more enjoyable than the speci style and far more adaptable when conditions are tough. I know you use powerline for hooklengths Steve but how do you find it does against abrasion? I would imagine being a pre stretched line it's abrasion qualities wouldn't be as good as a traditional mono such as maxima/sensor/big game etc?
Powerline is OK in clean swims , I use tough reel lines for hook lengths in rough rocky swims .
@@fishwithsteve-ft5xx would you use a 6lb maxima hooklength when using an 8lb maxima mainline Steve or go straight through with 8lb maxima?
@Accyboom yes that will about right
Subbed and liked. What reel is it please
Thanks it's a Castizm
Cool, any links for the stops they look good size, great info
You have an interesting casting style similar to having a line clip on but then you pull line off the spool to create a bow in line , very accurate!😊
Goes to show - the only time you are guaranteed to blank is if you stay at home👍
Enjoyed watching 👍🏻
Great Vid Steve, please sort out the background noises especially on the close ups of the Uni Knot. Still have some of your floats, used one on the River Anchor before Christmas. 👌

Another great video Steve, Cheers.
Steve hi, really interesting video. Can I ask how deep is the swim you were fishing with the 7 gram float. Please keep the vids coming.
@@davemcevoy8122 its 8ft deep
Super!!!
Hello Steve, have you ever fished peg 88, on Belmont's Asda bank. I did recently and found the peg very uncomfortable on the mud bank. There is no platform here . How would you approach it. Would you stand up on the peg. For the duration of the session. Or is there a way to position a seat without getting right down to where the water is.
@robertoliverfishingdaysout if i were pleasure fishing I'd choose another peg. 88 is OK with extra water on the river fish it from the tree roots halfway up the bank. If you get down fish it standing with a stick float or pole to hand
@SteveMaher-ft5xx Many thanks for replying Steve. Great videos . I tried fishing with bread and a topper float . Just after the Wye championship. It was a Monday. That float method accounted for a 30lb plus net of chub on peg 82. Thoroughly enjoyed the session. Definitely one of my best days on Belmont.
What I find amazing is the stamp of fish on Wye. It seems to be full of decent stamp fish , thus the 80lb , 90lb 100lb bags whereas elsewhere with the same numbers of fish you weigh 10, 20 maybe 30lb of fish if you are lucky.
Nice video. Some river that....only a 44-gram feeder!
Hi Steve. Really like the rig you use for barbel. Does that bottom float stop ever slip over the knot when casting out heavier feeders or when snagged?
no it never slips never had a problem with it
Do you use pva binder (think it was called that), to make your ground bait hit bottom before it brakes up ? I used to make half and half mix, guessing its been discontinued nowadays.
just soil for weight. The ABC mixes up about right without need for other ingredients
Hi Steve. Another cracker mate. Iv fished on and off for 50 years now, but I’m picking up so much from your vids. I’m back on the banks now as much as possible. Just wondering what make of cage you were using. Thanks for all the tips and keep up the great work, helping so many people with out the usual promotions pushed in most other vids. Cheers,👌
what make Pole are you using,? also would it not be better to throw the groundbait in Upstream, 7ft deep in fast flow i would
Its a 10 metre Air system whip
Nice place bad sound quality am afraid hardley hear a word
Should throw your groundbait up stream. It takes 16-20 seconds to hit floor.
Its a,system whip 10 metre Air. The GB contains Soil its already heavy sinks like a stone. Never feed GB upstream you'll not be fishing over it if you do
Never feed GB upstream it sinks immediately if mixed correctly with soil. Feed upstream the fish will move up out of your swim, always feed it downstream you can run your rig down over the gb
Lovely fishing,who needs commercials?
great to watch a bloke at the top of his game, superb steve.
top of his game ??? blokes an absolute areshole with an attitude
Another good Video some excellent tips along the way as well, Keep em coming Steve 😁
Fast, efficient and effective. Great video I'm definitely going to change my feeding approach here on the Trent around Nottingham. Thanks Steve 👍
probably use a lighter mix on the Trent unless there's a lot of fish in a deep pacey swim
I do tend to fish the deeper swims often with quite a flow. 12 to 15ft. Challenging but fun.
Sad !!
skillfully done steve, proper armchair swim that! thanks for sharing.
Thanks 👍
Cracking video, have to try this on the Swale

Thanks
Lovely when it works, nice one.
Great video again Steve, very noisy background, sounds like the farmers are working.
Great video Steve, Very entertaining thank you for sharing 👍
Thanks 👍
Nice video Steve. Just wondering what brand/diameter 10lb line do you use? I would of thought using 10lb line with a quivertip it would pull right round with the flow pushing against it.
10lb will diametre 0.28 give or take a fraction. 4 or 5 oz carbon tips are great for river barbel work
Is this a day ticket or club water
club water Bidford baa
It looks like the stretch between BAA Bidford and Marcliff Weir (also BAA water) ?
totally agree with you about hooks..kamasan are brilliant..i like using the beefed up version of the 510 which is the 610 for chub in sizes 18 and 20 especially when having to give them loads of pressure in snaggy pegs
The 610 is a brilliant hook sadly discontinued now. Not enough people knew how good they really was.
Hi, what rod are you using? In this video please.
Its a tricast Tri Axial 15ft spliced tip very reliable when hooking big fish on small hooks
@SteveMaher-ft5xx Thanks for the reply. I'll have a look at 1
@@daveriley7075 I think they stopped selling them. I'm not sure if they are the same/similar action but TriCast John Allerton might be an option. Tell me anyone who knows different. I'm after a spliced tip too.
@ similar to the Allerton yes they're no longer made, a Drennan Acolyte ultra would do the job or maybe a cheaper alternative like a cadence 15ft no1 no spliced tips I know of available now, Browning Sphere was the last spliced tip I heard of
Hi can I ask why with a fairly heavy float have you shirt button the shot rather than an ovillette and droppers to be positive, I really want to try float fishing for chub but unsure of river presentations so many conflicting information out there . Many thanks
Sorry but I couldn’t help offering advice. The positive approach comes from the size of the float. Bigger float equals more shot carrying capacity. A shirt button pattern, in heavier shot, on a big float, will get down positively in the increased flow yet still enable the bait to rise when held back. An olivette, or any other form of bulk, reduces the amount of lift that can be induced in the bait. A nice long taper down to the hookbait can make the bait appear more natural in some situations and induce more bites. If that doesn’t work you can always slide your shot down to form a bulk and see if they prefer it that way. If Steve responds please listen to him rather than me. But I think I'm close enough.
Ovillette bulks are great for getting the bait to the bottom quickly for bottom feeding fish, chub move up and down in the water feeding at different depths a spread shotting pattern enables the hook bait to rise up when holding the float still, the 18inch hooklength and small shots at the tail end of the rig lift giving natural presentation when the float is held back. the big shots hold the float steady and keep it moving in a straight line without dragging offline. keeping my hookbait in with the loose offering longer as the float travels downstream
Great video steve. What oz tip do you use for barbel fishing?
usually 4 or 5 oz carbon for big river barbel
Cheers Steve. Completely agree with you about the pudding mix and 2 rod set ups. I got caught in that scenario. Didn't like it at all. Never felt right fishing two rods for barbel.
@@Accyboom cheers yes once you start understanding and reading the river you only need one rod.
Steve, if you had to use only one float, which one would you use?
depends where you're fishing there isn't a one fits all solution, a 6no4 stick, 4AAA waggler and 4gram bolo are probably the most common choices in each design. each day is different so requires a good choice of options
Hi I purchased a couple of torpedo flat float recently and in the package threaded on the stem is a piece of shaped celophane type material they are shown to be fitted on the top of the float between the top holding pin and the antenna what is the exact idea behind this addition I asked cralusso but got no answer. Great videos keep them coming Cheers Len Batten
@lenbatten the clear plastic leaf is to help the water push down keeping the float down in fast water, basically helps stop the float ridding out. Worthwhile hanging onto this plastic leaf in the big sixes they 100% work
@SteveMaher-ft5xx thanks for the reply
Another great video Steve enjoyed it , used to fish there 30 odd years ago . Fished a winter league there nearly all the section blanked , always blamed compensation water coming through of a Sunday back then , does this still happen. Is that the 13 / 15 foot Tournament rod your using , I use one there a brilliant rod for any method silver fishing . Keep up with the videos there all a good watch 🐟🐟
@philsmith5454 yes that rods probably 20 years old. Compensation water still affects the river, although rain seems to keep us off the river because of high levels
Hi Steve the crows foot conections do you do same for a barbel rig
yes i've used it for Barbel
Great stuff
No Bleak?
yes was plenty of bleak over the initial 8 balls of grounbait,, moved out a rod length and didn't get many more
Used to fish it years ago, is the car parking any better😅
expensive robbing shopshire council
Great to see fish coming back
Did you not think any groundbait would be appropriate Steve, given the depth and flow?
@unionjakjakson Groundbait doesn't always work on this venue, If I was fishing pole to hand for dace I'd put some in
@@fishwithsteve-ft5xx thx...makes sense.
