Almost euro dance? This live jam has the classic 909 drums and detuned saws of that great era. Once again the TR8S is on bass duty, while the System8 also serves a supersaw pad. I usually start with the riff, but this time it is drums first. Hope you enjoy it!

Another house jam, this time reminiscent of sunny Sunday afternoons. Must be to counter 2 months of non-stop overcast? Finally a new live performance! Once again I couldn't resist the SuperSaw for the main chords & arpeggio, so this jam turned out very much like 2000-era trance. The System-8 is also providing the acid line & lead, using a square oscillator with lots of resonance and overdrive. The TR-8S does drums, effects, and bass. Another live hardware jam, featuring a heavily detuned saw lead and equally detuned saw pad. The finale uses the arpeggiator and live oscillator tweaking for heavy movement. Drums are a mix of 909 and FM, while the TR also has bass duty. The bass is a sampled System8 patch, a trick that works quite well and I plan to use more.

Live jam featuring some stabby Juno chords, reminiscent of those 90s Eurodance classics. The System8 also does the bass, a simple saw/sub combo. The drums from the TR8S are a mix of 707 and FM models. I'm starting to really love the FM drums; the "screech" stab and the "oomph" transition are both FM sounds with their morph parameter automated.

Another live jam featuring the (in)famous Roland super saw, this time for the staccato pad. I wanted to figure out how triplets work on these machines, ending up with this Tinlicker-style jam. The System8 also does the arpeggio and lead, using a simple sawtooth with a bit of distortion and tons of reverb. The TR8S takes care of the bass (SH sample) and the drums (a mix of FM, 808, and noise).

Fifth live jam using the Roland System8 and TR8S, this time (over?)using an 808 kick. The lead sound is a detuned saw and the pad is a pulse with chorus. As the melody is short, the percussion spans 8 bars to keep things interesting.

Live synth cover of this sunny trance classic. The lead sound is 3 octave-stacked saws with a snappy filter envelope. The notes in its sequence differ in gate and velocity. The stereo delay adds a hypnotic vibe. Drums are 909, bass is a saw, and the pad uses PCM sounds 56 57 (choirs).

Fourth live jam using the Roland System8 and TR8S, starting off with a PWM bass and 909 drums. The lead sound is a NoiseSaw and the percussive stabs are FM sounds from the TR8S (with lots of reverb). I'm using the step loop function towards the end, which is a lot of fun!

Live cover of this early euro dance hit with instantly recognizable piano riff. The piano and organ are PCM samples with lots of delay. The strings are 2 panned supersaws, and the bass is a thin pulse with sub oscillator. The drums are mainly 909, with a 707 kick plus congas & shakers for a latin feel.

Third live jam using the Roland System8 and Roland TR8S. The main arpeggio is a square with envelope on the PWM, leading to this cool nasal sound. The bass is a combo of a saw (for the bottom) and FM (for the slab). Drums are mostly 707, but the "crackle" is one of these cool FM sounds in the TR-8S . The melody on the top highlights the pitch LFO that slowly fades in.

Live cover of this energetic trance classic. All songs were surprisingly easy to reproduce on the JDXi: the organ is a built-in waveform and all other elements are (super)saw oscillators. Drums are primarily 909, with HPF noise for the sweeps.

First live jam with my new setup! The System8 is doing the bass & lead, the TR8S is doing all drums. The lead is a Saw & Sub oscillator with snappy filter envelope. The bass is a Square oscillator with LFO modulation and some chorus. Drums are mostly 707. I'm opening up the reverb for the main transitions, and playing the pluck while the sequencer takes care of the riff.

Live cover of this Euro Dance classic. The characteristic lead sound is a combination of 3 detuned saws, the peak filter, and lots of delay. The bass has the sub-osc enabled plus a very short filter envelope. The drums are mostly 909 and the pads are 2 simple supersaws panned L R.

Brilliant stuff, in a world where everything is now overproduced and over compressed these types of sounds just stick out so much more for the right reasons. 98-05 was definetly the best era, there’s exceptions either side of then but that was the sweet spot.

Actually Harold Faltemeyer composed and arranged most of this song. He was an engineer for Giorgio at that time, sort of a dream team. It was after this soundtrack that Harold went solo into the world of movie scoring, with the blessing of Giorgio. The two are still great friends.

Hiya, another top tune👍 I have a question and I am hoping you can help me? I have purchased a used system 8 2 weeks ago and I love it, your channel inspired me so much I had to get one🙂 however I am having a problem and cant find an answer anywhere (manual/google) No matter how hard i try i cannot get my 'real time' recordings to play properly, they are always out of sync and dont play the notes as i play them, i'm fairly novice but know it is not my timing as i have absolutely no problem real time recording on other devices. It's very weird and frustrating😒 I am wondering if you know of any settings that could be wrong/need changing? Or if this is normal behaviour for this synth? I totally understand if you would rather not reply and I do feel a little cheeky asking here but I don't know who to ask , any advice would be very much appreciated👍
Hey, happy to help! I wonder if the timing of the sequencer is set to 1/8 or even triplet notes? It is one of the dials right above the 16 sequencer pads.

Thanks! The bass is coming from the System8. I since switched to having the TR8s do bass though, so I can use the sys8 for lead+chords.
The basses built in the TR8s are not great, so I sampled a few from the System8. That works great, see my latest 4 songs.

Absolutely awesome tune! I currently have jdxi with tr8s, considering system 8, worthy upgrade?
For me the upgrade from JDXi to TR8S+System8 worked out great. I still have a "band" as I use the TR for drum+bass and the S8 for lead+keys. It is a bit fiddly punching in chromatic basslines in the TR, but with this setup you don't need mixers, effects, etc. The sound is more polished, given the higher quality reverb/delay and the side chain on TR input. I always use the master compressor from the TR, set to a gentle glue. The S8 only has 64 steps in the sequencer where the JD and TR have 128. That is a small downside, although you can still do 8 bars for 1/8 pads. The massive improvement over the JDXi is that everything is knob per function so you can do elaborate realtime performances.

Awesome! Could you explain how you connected the System-8 and TR-8s? I am considering buying these two devices. I think for syncing, you used the MIDI out from the System-8 to the MIDI in on the TR-8s. For the audio, did you connect the L/R channel out from the System-8 to the L/R channel in on the TR-8s? Then, can you use headphones or connect the TR-8s to speakers for output? I would really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance! 😅
Midi goes from the TR into the S8 and audio indeed from the S8 into the TR. I use the headphones from the TR to hear it all, and its stereo out to record onto my GoPro. The TR has a side chain compressor on the input. I always use that, although gently. I also always set the master effect to compression, with gentle glue settings. The S8 also has a stereo input which loops all the way through. I use that for listening to example tracks from my phone, but you could also add a mic or another box. This input has its own distort/delay/reverb effects.

Thanks! It is a standard Z shaped stand with standard addons for a second keyboard. I simply placed them close together at a large angle. I think the brand is Quiklok.
