Light Weight Personal Survival Kit For Thru Hikers etc

My attempt at building a light weight personal survival kit. Thru hikers etc only carry the essentials and are always looking to save weight. Some in the UK don't even carry a pocket knife! Please critique the video as we learn from peer review. Just remember this is LIGHT WEIGHT so no metal mugs, full tang knife, bow saw or poncho included. I think the big water filter thing is probably a next step item. I'd say a better first step is a couple of push through filter water bottles (push type so they can be decanted after) and a camping style water carrier in case we're lining up at standpipes. Blankets, books and games, a few dumbells and some exercise bands.

Will not make you thirsty and in a survival situation will help calm you down, and then you have a chance of thinking about your situation. After all the years with a survival belt kit. They kept those Canteen Cup Stoves safely in QM warehouses, and out of the grubby fingers of snuffy privates when I went thru Boot in early '74. We still had a lot of C-Rats. We were given lots of trioxane. The stuff reeked. Probably deliberately to keep Snuffies from burning it inside tents. We got a John Wayne [P-38] opener, and were taught to open the can with Crackers/Candy first. Reserve the contents, and punch many perforations in the top and lower rim of the 2'' tall can -- to make a hobo stove. You could keep the stove for the next stop. It was small. Or start over with the next pack of C-Rats [MCI = Meals, Combat, Individual.] Canteen Cup Stoves would've seemed like Gucci Gear to us.

I'd recommend the Rovyvon series of small torches, I have the A5 and it's great, 650 lumens. When summer's finished it will be back on with my house key and Leatherman Micra. In summer I keep it in my Vanquest Husky pouch and use it for camping, as a headtorch and lantern. If things were to go wrong and you couldn't find batteries, I'd rather have something I could recharge using solar and powerbanks.

I believe that we are facing a global famine in the coming years that will be so extreme that billions of people will die. Due to the massive worldwide decline in insect populations, the entire ecosystem will collapse in a few years, and it will be 100,000 times worse than the Great Chinese Famine caused by humans in 1959 when Mao ordered the extermination of sparrows. Do you have any tips on how to protect ourselves when there will be many food shortages and the entire ecosystem collapses?

My hometown in Cumbria flooded. It was Jan 2005. Lost power at 5.30am so no lighting, heating, hot water, everything electric. Thank god for tea lights. Wish I'd known about creating a room within a room for the kids to sleep in, also that candles require a carbon monoxide detector. By 11am supermarkets had shut, no petrol stations, no cash machines available. Luckily we lived on a hill, friends/family weren't so lucky. By nightfall there was looting, so glad we had a battery operated radio. Motorway was cut off, couldn't get across the city to relatives. The fire/police stations were flooded as were council offices where emergency plans were stored. They had to send a diver in. Mobile phones, Internet, portable handsets gone in mins. Only thing that worked was an old plug in BT landline. It was very surreal how things changed in such a short space of time. This went on for days. People got sick during the cleanup due to contamination from sewers. You'd be surprised how life can change in a few hours.

Thank you, I just received this pack today, but I'm primarily going to use it for rucking. I'm no Hercules, so I doubt I'll exceed 50lbs, and I'm only starting with 25lbs, so I hope It'll withstand the weight. One thing I am disappointed about is that there is no quick grab water bottle pouch, as I won't be utilizing the bladder system. There was a UA-cam video on what i thought was this same pack, that had water bottle pouches, and I based my purchase on that video. I'm 79 years old and was a Boy Scout in my youth. The Scouting magazine called "Boys Life" (back issues found online) had an article back in the 1950s which showed how to make a shirt pocket-sized survival kit. It included waterproof matches (which were made by dipping the heads of wooden matches down half the length of the match in fingernail polish), a small compass, fish hooks and line, water purification tablets, and several other items I have forgotten over the years. Of course all boys carried a pocket knife in those days, and they were used to play games such as "split" and "mumblipeg" on the school playgrounds, fun things which are viewed with horror in this present insane world.
