Log splitter testing, temp/pressure gauge

The outside temp was 50 degrees. The temp jumped up to 150 degrees within 30 mins of just running without using the cylinder. It increased to about 180 deg in an hour, again without using the cylinder. My goal was to see how the temperature is effected by the fluid cycling. Baseline testing. I used the cylinder a few times during the test and the max pressure decreased 300 psi. It was a 5" cyli...
Review - Super Handy 20 Ton Log Splitter
Переглядів 2,1 тис.11 місяців тому
We are self proclaimed log splitter experts, mainly because we have been designing log splitters for over 40 years combined. We recently purchased the Super Handy 20 Ton log splitter because it looked like a great little machine. After using it we still think it's a great machine but there are flaws. First of all, it's most defiantly not a 20 ton. It's at best a 13 ton but more likely an 11 ton...

TrencherPro Mini-Trencher: Common Wear Parts

Severity and timeframe of wear is highly dependent on many factors suc...
How much tonnage will it take for this log splitter to bust through a massive 36" log?
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
Testing to see how much tonnage you need to split through a massive 36" log. Splitting logs of this size is a lot of work but not for the log splitter. Once I had the fire wood log setup it split with ease. I have a fancy pants pressure gauge that records pressure data every 50ms. That's 20 pressure readings every second. These pressure data points are sent to my phone and I download them to my...
How many tons do you actually need in a log splitter to split wood?

I'm using a 25 ton Countyline log splitter, but how many tons do I actually need and use? I have a fancy pressure gage that records pressure readings every 50 micro sec. In the video, I split pine and some hardwood about 18" in diameter. Results: 14 tons The most tons I needed was 14, averaging 4-6 tons. The best-selling and most popular splitter used to be the Speeco Huskee 22 ton. Has wood be...

    I have a 1991 MTD 20 Ton log splitter with a DUERR 717-0887a hydraulic pump. The pump leaks oil where the pipe goes in the bottom return line side of pump. and it's NOT leaking where the hose connects to this pipe, some times the pipe just falls out the pump. Do you know what is suppose to hold the pipe in? How many GPM is this pump and if I need to get a new pump, what pump would be compatible? The splitter works very well but hydraulic fluid is getting expensive---Any help appreciated

    I found your video great. My detent is acting backwards. The detent locks on the extension stroke instead of the retraction stroke. You touched on it quickly saying it’s plumbed incorrectly. Any idea how to best fix this problem so that the set end will auto retract instead of extend the cylinder? Thanks

      Hi there, it sounds like you may simply have the working ports (A & B) reversed. If you switch those around--that is, connect them to the opposite ports on the cylinder from your current setup--that should reverse the action of the valve. I hope this helps!

      I just got one and had the same problem. It took 2 full gallons to get fluid level to register 3/8" on the dipstick. I wrote the company that sold it, Great Circle US. Waiting for a response, but you're right, with 2 full gallons, fluid level is just where the filler tube neck meets the tank when I look in with a small, narrow flashlight, and it runs fine. Split 2-5" logs with no issues, and no foam.

    I just bought the same unit at my local family farm and garden store in Michigan. It does not have a hydraulic oil filter? The manual shows it’s supposed to have one installed. I returned it and they gave me an updated manual and told me the new manual does not show it having the hydraulic oil filter, so it does not need one. I ended up not returning it and kept it but even in this video, yours shows it with the hydraulic oil filter. Can you clarify and help me out as to whether I need the filter or not? Thanks you.

    • @byronmill
      @byronmill 3 місяці тому

      Ever hydraulic splitter should have an appropriately sized return line filter head with a 25 micron filter element. Every pump and hydraulic valve manufacturer will have that specified in their system design criteria. You can purchase an appropriate head and filter assembly online and adapt it to the return to tank line.

    Would have been nice if he talked about some of the specs i.e. what was the size of the cylinder i.e. piston and bore, also, what size gas engine was on the unit that would drive the 35 ton log splitter, and what gpm was the pump.

    • @cajun5957
      @cajun5957 4 місяці тому

      What would all that matter when all he was showing was how to replace the piston on a wood splitter. I’m sure they’re all basically about the same, maybe a few differences but nothing to do with gpm tonnage bore and size gas engine.

  • @kenavram5586
    @kenavram5586 7 місяців тому

    This was a terrible video. He should have kept the valves in the same direction so you could compare the input and output hoses. Instead he flipped it around so as to cause confusion and it was really confusing. Most log splitters have that mounted on the right had side close to the engine and pump. Then he starts saying A and B, what do those even mean?

    What is the ratio of horsepower needed per gallon per minute of hydraulic flow.

    • @tooltuffdirect
      @tooltuffdirect 10 місяців тому

      Here is your "Basic" formula: Hp = (q * P) / (1714 * Em) q = flow (gpm) P = pressure Em= pump efficiency Should also take elevation into consideration which could be around a 3% in engine reduction i.e. need more Hp at elevation. Hope that helps.

    It's normal for it to foam up because of the design but it's not a good thing. Foamy hydraulic fluid is a bad thing! You will get excessive heat buildup, less pressure and will prematurely destroy hydraulic components. It's a poor design.

    Thanks for the video. Question: The top connection to the brush hog is designed to "float." I.e. to have a few inches of travel so that the implement can travel up and down over uneven ground. It appears that you have removed the floating upper connection point and attached directly to the mower. How would this actually work in a rough field environment?

    With my NorthStar 37 Ton Splitter approximately 13 years old today I changed the oil and the recoil still locked after towing 17 miles …I drained the bowl of fuel….still locked ….I removed the pump a bit from the adaptor plate on the Honda GX 160 to put visegrips on the shaft to see if would turn …it did 1/4 turn then I hear a CLUNK in the engine …I did see the piston move a little to see if the crankshaft is okay….but it won’t go a full revolution and return to TDC…..thoughts …did road jostling break something inside?

    I started My Northstar 37 Ton splitter at my house to check it …it ran normal …then I towed it 17 miles to my daughters home to do some work and the Honda GX 160 appears seized….I cannot pull it over …..it’s never done this …..could the pump cause this if something vibrated during the towing? The engine has oil and a low shutdown feature so I’m baffled ….the pump is original to the splitter 2010 purchase……any thoughts?

    • @tooltuffdirect
      @tooltuffdirect Рік тому

      It's an engine issue. It can happen if you tow the engine without shutting off the fuel. Fuel fills the crank case from all the bouncing, jiggles the float in the carb, everything in the fuel tank ends up in the oil sump. You could wait a day and it may be okay. The best thing to do would be check the carb to make sure the float is working properly. Drain the oil and put new oil in. Should be good to go.
