Trencher Chain Locks Up - Cause and Fix

  • I'm using a Trencher Pro with a 27" Mini-Trencher Bar and Chain.
While using the trencher it will suddenly stop and the powerhead clutch will engage. Depending on our soil type and how you use the machine it can happen often. The powerhead comes to a sudden stop because the chain is gets tight on the bar and prevents the powerhead from rotating. This is cause by couple main issues.
    1) Rocks or sand can get lodged between the chain and nose sprocket. When a rock gets lodged between the nose sprocket it can lock up the chain or can reduce the chain length slightly causing the chain to bind.
    2) Soil gets into the rollers and links and creates a bunch of friction causing the links to kink and not lay naturally.
If this happens while using the machine, turn off the trencher. Visually look at the nose sprocket to make sure there is not an obstruction between the sprocket and chain, knock it out with a hammer or object. Tap the sides of the chain to knock soil and sand from rollers and links.
How do you prevent this from happening? Engage the trencher with the soil putting pressure to dig. Occasionally release pressure while remaining in the trench to allow the chain to spin fast knocking off built up dirt or debris.
When the chain get's more wear it's necessary to add lubricate to the chain. Chainsaw bar and chain oil, vegetable oil, or diluted hydraulic oil will work to lube the chain.
