Great job you have heat ! Them heaters are meant to run on 12v & should work on any power station that has a cig lighter port , I've been experimenting being off grid for 11 years :) Led bulbs 120v is way more efficient than 12v , I keep a 12v light only in my battery room incase something goes down & it's dark :) You need a lithium battery to hook your heater to it will last a couple days, get a 50 amp charger you can run off the old genny to charge it up when you need :) Have a Merry Christmas
Thanks, might be an option!
I think some people use the EG4 chargeverters to be able to charge from dirty generator power. I guess it would depend on what the DC input range is on your power stations.
Once I decide on the solution, it will be a whole other video, but basically an Ecoflow can charge quickly from "shore" power, so I assumed a regular generator would do it. Not so. They need clean 120v AC power with low THD. So either an inverter generator, or an inverter on my truck, or a clean sine wave UPS plugged into a regular generator, or something like that. Or, solar panels.
also look at the eg4 charge verter... it can convert dirty AC generator power into DC
Update video: ua-cam.com/video/vm1Ozpw37K4/v-deo.html
Ecoflow delta 2 max with a propane inverter generator is my setup. I can charge the delta almost 10x per 20lb propane tank.the delta runs my 2 fridges all night per charge which takes about 1.5hrs. Plus whatever solar I can “generate” with a panel in your definition of the term.
Pecron is very reliable. I have many power stations...Pecron e1500lfp, 2 Pecron e600lfp, Bluetti AC180, AlphaEss SG2000, and yes, even the Solarplay Q2501. Also Allpowers S2000 pro, and a couple of smaller Bluetti...EB3a and PS54. I have several more, some are off brand. So far, all have worked well. The Bluetti and the Pecron are the best. Also have a Jackery Explorer 1000v2 that is sure to be reliable. I also have 2 Pecron 1242 DC-DC chargers that convert a 12.8v lipo4 100ah battery into 42v 500watt output. That will, by using it as solar input for most power stations allow it to be an expansion battery. It will charge the power station at up to 500 watts from the lipo4 battery. So far, I have 6 lipo4 batteries, each supplies 1280wh. It will not work with the Solar Play, and I do not know why. It works with all the Pecrons, the Bluetti AC180 and the AlphaEss SG2000. Some I have not tested, or the max solar voltage is less than 42 volts. After having issues from Hurricane Helene and being without power over 1 week, I went sort of nuts with buying power stations on sale.
watch out the muffler is very close to wood !
A couple things to consider. 1. A gasoline generator will do you no good if you don't have gasoline. And we all know that it's difficult to store fuel, at least in any meaningful capacity and you can't do so indefinitely. 2. I and many others live where hurricanes hit and kill entire grids (NC), so you're not going to be able to obtain fuel if you don't already have it if the stores can't pump it. Even if a store can pump fuel, are you actually going to make it there to get it? What if the roads are impassable? If the roads are fine and assuming the pumps are working and the store will/can sell it to you, how much can you carry? Will any be left? You also can't run a gasoline generator indoors. That poses a couple risks. The generator itself could be stolen and during natural disasters you're advertising your whereabouts and that you have energy. Best case scenario is to have multiple "solar" "generators" from the big manufacturers such as EcoFlow and have both solar panels and a gasoline generator. The brands that you say are just maketing also cost more because of their charging capabilities. You can run a gasoline generator for a little over an hour and 20 minutes, then take the solar unit in your house without announcing your presence and have the ability to charge daily if sun is available and sufficient. All this prepping stuff has to be layered. You'll still need candles, fuel oil lanterns and other cooking utilities. I get what you mean, but at the same time a generator doesn't generate anything without fuel. And like I said, good luck getting an inexpensive "solar genertor" or power station to recharge in 1.2 hours from AC and in less than 5 hours with ideal solar conditions alone. The big companies actually have paid for that R&D, and they'll be around when something does go wrong to answer a phone . Those other companies may not be. You may be paying more, but you're actually paying for something. Plus, like you said, there's always sales!
It’s funny that I was offended by this video. It’s your thought process. Teaching us like children. Some need to be educated like this. It turned out good and you’ve already taken the criticism from others and fixed some of the plans you made. I’ve watched all kinds of videos like this and you did well. I’ve got 4 or 5 of these heaters now and all are in different configurations . Thanks for your time and effort to putting this video out so others can see how to do this and how not to do it.
It's really me that's the child lol. I'm no expert and don't pretend to be. I'm what happens when you watch too much UA-cam and think you can do stuff. :)
I'm a middle-aged female mountain dweller from the Appalachian Mountains of SW VA, and I confess to rewinding the part where you got zapped for a 2nd viewing! 🤔😬 For every ignorant husband and boyfriend I had that considered looking at instructions to be a last resort when all else failed, and inevitably it did, for every time I had to hear that the recommended safety precautions were for candy-arses, and for every time damage was caused or I ended up hurt because of someone who always looked for shortcuts, not bothering to consider that there are more often times than not, reasons, and dang good ones, for the orderly steps listed for tasks, I admit you put a gleeful smile on my face and made me shamefully chuckle out loud merrily! I was halfway asleep, and jerked to attention at the sound of a zap and a yelp, and sure enough, it was what I thought it was! 🙄 😁💃😃 I had to rewind it... I'm not proud of myself, and I'm glad you appear to be not permanently injured (I checked, you said you got some marks on your finger, which will serve as a reminder, hopefully), and I know it hurt, so I hope you feel better. I just had to say thanks for the giggles and humor, warped as it might be... Be careful, sir, and Merry Christmas! 😂🤣🎄💃

Any concern of the fuel gelling with the tank outside?
Not really. Diesel is the same as furnace oil, which is commonly stored in steel tanks outdoors in this area, same as big trucks.
Consider wrapping the fuel line to prevent gelling during extream cold
Might be an idea if I run into issues, but diesel/furnace oil is commonly stored outside in steel tanks around here.
Good little heater! Your exhaust looks like it may have a low spot int he line? You don't want that. you will be getting inline condensation and it will build up in that low spot plugging the exhaust. That could shut the unit down. Also the fuel being outside could get thicker and gel in the cold so a fuel additive it in order or add a little alcohol to thin it.
I'm making a bit of a change to how the exhaust is routed, so it will be pointed downhill and away from the wood box which should solve the condensation issue as well. We'll see how it goes with the fuel, but diesel/furnace oil is commonly stored outside in steel tanks around here without issue. Thanks!
@@HollisDoesStuff I'm glad that you caught that the exhaust shouldn't be touching the wood and needs to be on a downwards angle. The muffler should also be facing a bit more downwards as well and horizontal, so that any water buildup will just drip out. As for the diesel tank outside like that, you might want to find some diesel additive. I forget the name, but it's design to keep the diesel from gelling up. Also, you might want to put some fireproof insulation around the big black pipes as well as you will lose heat with them being partly outside like that. Please let us know how this works out when it's like -25C. Or more. We have several greenhouses, one being our "main" one, which is the largest. Not huge or anything, just 11x11x11. We 'insulated" with 3 layers of bubble wrap and an outer layer of 6 mil poly. Currently, we heat it only with an electric heater, 120V, 15 amps. That thing sucks the power when it's like -15C or lower. In fact, sometimes, the inside goes too low. I'm about to order one of these heaters, but more like the all-in-one you showed. I want to put that into the greenhouse and if it actually does have a thermostat, like a house furnace, then set it for maybe 10C. If it doesn't, I'll design an ESP32 thermostat that can transmit data to the house. So I am curious how well it works with super low temps. Take care and stay well.
i bought an Ecoflow a couple of years ago to provide off grid power for my camper, which I use as a cabin. I'm quite happy with it and bought a cheap solar panel off Amazon which will power it up on a sunny day no problem. You are absolutely right saying you get what you pay for generally,
DUDE this powerpank has 12 volt out....
Yup, but only at 10 amps. Glow plugs on these need more to start it.
Ive been running one in the house for a few years. Great kit, all the more noticeable when your in a Canadian wood cabin im sure. Tips are in abundance on UA-cam.
Try harder. I'm sure you can burn it down. 👍😉
Isn’t the fuel gonna gel in the cold temps being outside?
Just put it in an insulated box if that's the case.
Shouldn't, furnace oil is typically in steel tanks outside, same thing.
@@HollisDoesStuff Actually, the home heating oil, for sub-zero cold climates is usually mixed with kerosene to avoid gelling. Yes, home heating oil, without an additive, will gel below -10F. As for truckers, for winter, the diesel will have an additive. I suppose, if you'll be using diesel from a gas station, that has the additives already in it, you would be fine. That's what I plan on using, even though, the tank is built into the unit. I had thought of getting a much bigger tank, if this works well for the greenhouse, and mounting that outside. As I typed that, I realized, I can easily do a test by just putting some diesel in a sealed jug and leaving it outside to see what happens. Oh isn't this all fun. LOL
Your suppose to use pipe wrap on the exhaust to keep from burning yourself or the pump. You put a plate under the heater but the exhaust pip right on the wood. That will burn.
I've actually already modified it by moving the exhaust away from the box and will be also putting on a heat shield.
Lowered expectations has a whole series on modifying them, and what happens with waste oil blends
Nice heater, the plywood sideing by your fuel tank is done improperly, you are going to have water wicked in at the floor level when it rains from that's side.
I know it looks that way, but the siding actually goes lower than the floor. The board you're seeing is just trim. Good eye though.
i had that nautilus like long long time ago lol. glad to see it again
I have the same table as well lol
if you put a heat exchanger on the exhaust you can get "free" hot water! either use a pump or preferably thermal syphon to heat a radiator or some washing water and then running the exhaust through a sand battery wouldn't hurt, would work better if it was inside for that to work and just the muffler outside
Might be an idea for hot water if I ever put water in the cabin.
Project Farm did a video testing these.
Move the mounting plate 180 deg. then the exhaust and combustion lines won't cross and your fuel line won't be as close to the exhaust. The fuel pump is right above the exhaust just waiting for a leak, bonfire. the flash point pump diesel is about 126 deg f.
Good point, except the intake and exhaust heat inside are where I want them to be currently.
Move the pump...
I'm considering that. I moved the exhaust away from the wood already.
That exhaust pipe gets pretty hot, I would consider moving the pump and fuel line away from it. Might also be worth spacing the muffler further from the wood.
I'd be more worried about a grizzly picking it up or a mighty wind😅😅😅😅😅
exhaust to heat exchanger for hot water then to a sand battery then outside to the muffler, that way you use every bit of heat! you keep the unit inside and it's only a tiny hole out of the building and the end of the pipe stays cool
Thanks, I have actually done this already after thinking that. It's uglier, but probably alot safer.
Ha no grizzlies here, just a few black bears.
Maybe one day if I put water in the cabin!
Is the generator producing a pure sine wave? If not it will keep doing that.
I use generator to charge 1000 watt ecoflow, but i dont use power cord ,cant handle it ,1500 watt inverter style genny, using 48volt 5 amp ebike charger works for charging
In the Philippines they want over 1100 dollars just for the extra battery. Would buy but not paying these prices.
Best to get cheap, used solar pnls, an mppt solar charge controller,a few LiPo4 100AH batteries with the inverter. Also..make your own small dc or ac wind gen out of car alternator & bicycle wheel laid in with balanced(!) homemade blades. Use belt or chain geared to run that alternator at least 5 to 600 rpm...i.e...car idle speed in modest wind. So tha6 means the blades need to be big enough to spin the alternator up to say..a 60amp x 12volts=720 watt torque load. A stout solar array of 800watts is nice, but an extra few panels for cloudy and winter time (weaker) solar input helps. There ya GO!
What generator... is the THD of it under 5%?
@@unijabnx2000 I have no idea what the THD is. It's an old champion 3000 watt.
@@HollisDoesStuff total harmonic distortion of the sine wave produced by the generator (dirty power some call it) The generators with the lowest THD are inverter generators.
Could be a BMS (battery management system) issue. To reset the BMS on EcoFlow disconnect everything from the EcoFlow, power it off, and then press and hold the power button until it turns on then continue to hold the power button until the screen blinks off and back on. This usually takes 5-10 seconds to complete. There are a few videos here on UA-cam showing it done.
Something to try. Make sure the generator is running properly. Second, set the switch for charging on the back of the Delta (depends on the model) and limit the charge to 200 watts. See if it takes that. If it does then raise to 300. Then 400. Also try it without the EB being connected. Full charge then turn off, reconnect, turn on and charge up the EB. Hope that helps!
Great discussion. I agree with you. You nailed it for the occasional blackout.
Prices on on power stations have come way down. I just bought a Delta 2 for $375. It can do 1800 watts.
Beware, none of these integrated units works outside in a Canadian winter. Read the environmental specs if you need winter operation in the cold. I ended up piecing together a Renogy system to get a rig that will work at -15 C.
Thought I was about to watch Bad Santa.
Propane .
I will agree I love my 2 inverters generators..I have a Honda 2200 and a Cat 2000. Both are whisper quiet and run like 9 hours or so on tank gas on eco mode, tank gallon or so, love both of um, I bought the 2 power stations recently because I want a solar option available incase the grid goes down long term and gas won't be an option once the stores run dry and that's only IF they can pump it out of the ground. My local back woods store has a large commercial diesel unit to run their store during outages so for me that won't be an issue but once their tank goes empty that's it
Hey, Hollis. I've watched three of your videos so far and really like your practical and honest approach to backup power. I was just about to comment on your previous video and saw this update and I'll say it's rare that a UA-camr will correct himself the way you did. Classy!!! I'll be back for more. I'm only Canadian by ancestry, but I live in the Southeast where there is no snow.We do have a hurricane season that sometimes affects us so a lot of what you said applies to us, too. I can't believe you don't have more subscribers, but keep it up and you will.
Dude says a boot aboot aboot
if you want to decrease amps and keep power (the same) the voltage must increase as amps increase voltage decreases assuming power (watts is same) the main formula is P=I x E or PIE P/I=E I= P/E power(watts)/volts=amps watts=volts x amps watts/amps=volts thats why 14 volts will draw less amps than 12 volts assuming watts remains constant (same) great vidja mr.
if P = 250 watts max current is 20.8 amps. you cant drive all circuits at max amps. it must be circuit A or B not both.
I'm testing a new power supply from another PC, it has 3 "rails", one 18 amps, another 18 and the third 15. Where it's DC, I should, in theory, be able to wire those together, no?
was there a capacitor with some juice stored up?
Yes, capacitor left 2 marks on my finger when I grabbed the circuit board lol
P=I x E and I= P/E or I= 20.8 amp if 250 watts if that helps anyone P/E=I p = power in watts or jouls E = volts I = amps
would an old school jumper pack be a good choice? 550 CCA the 25-30 lb ones
Have you considered using handtools more and power tools less, especially in off grid environment?😊
You mean... A hammer? Nah, that's crazy talk... :) Its "off grid" but not pioneer style off grid. Just low power requirements, too low for the cost of hooking up to grid.
Great review! I like your pragmatic, down-to-earth, conservative approach to things. Refusing to be taken in by flashy marketing. You saved me some research time. Have you noticed all the justification comments from those who purchased Eco Flow? 😂
New subscriber just because you commit a mistake cuz boy do I make a lot of them. Have a great day
I'm sure the majority of these power stations will go unused for ages then when they're needed won't hold a charge...E-Waste. Good for camping with a solar panel setup to keep them topped up If you really need off grid power a "power wall" is probably a better bet.
you get what you pay for. i bought the echoflow delta pro 3 with the delta pro 3 generator on massive sale. i'm not that savvy with electrical stuff and just needed to keep a few things running. i bought a genmax 9000 dual fuel enclosed generator for running in the day. i got such a large genmax because my elderly neighbor will need to recharge her stuff (including an oxygen concentrator) during power outages. did i buy a bigger gas generator than i needed? sure...but, i have found especially dealing with machinery and engines i would rather have more and not need it than have what i thought i needed and didn't have that extra when i desperately had to have it. my set up is not just about practicality, it's about peace of mind, flexibility and dependability. also, with the echoflow i will be buying solar panels for that triple threat i really want.
do you need empty gas befor emmpty oil?
