Thawing frozen sewer pipes with a diesel heater
I thaw out some frozen sewer pipes. Mixed results, but the diesel heater is definitely the way to get heat to frozen stuff. It's not that gross, trust me.

Adding electric start to a generator the easy way

Adding electric start to a generator the easy way
I use an Ecoflo like yours to run my camper off grid in the summer. I have two cheap solar panels for it and on a sunny day no problem to take it from 30% to 100% charge. I will run quite a bit of stuff off the 110volt system in the camper as long as I run the fridge on propane.
In theory, nothing will pull more than 20A from an outlet, but things like 120V welders and planers often do. They take advantage of a breaker's thermal trip setpoint that allows more current to be pulled than the breaker setpoint for a few minutes.
Nice to see the additions. In the oilfield out west here, we use LED 12 volt now. There used to be incandescent bulbs 12 and 24 v but due to the amps we quickly switched to LED asap.
I have more, interesting lighting coming soon. I might just be a light nerd.
Good video, I like the outdoor lights. I find that almost everything at the cabin takes longer than expected. ;)
Thanks! It's all the little steps you don't consider for me that set me back.
don't forget to calculate the surge power - also known as Motor Inrush Current on something like a compressor. x3 to x5 the nameplate Full Load Amperage (FLA)
Our emergency backup is an Ecoflow Delta 2500w/ 2100wh, 2/400w solar panels, and a 2500w dual fuel generator. We keep 18 gal of gas and 4 20lb propane cylinders. We'd be good for months, and total cast was around $2k.
Thank you for admitting what to me was obvious...I was angered a little bit by the original video...I got my ecoflow delta 2 for $400...and what you didn't say is that it interfaces with the bigged delta 2 max extra battery for over 3000 watt hours combined capacity ...I'm buying the bigger battery and they are available for $800 if you know where to look ...that's a smokin hot deal and combo..very high quality....I have 3 gas generators and like you this unit will power my cottage or camp site.. .I believe in redundancy when it comes to power....thanks for your candor..the ecoflow river 2 max is on a screaming sale and has 600 watts and 1000 surge.. app controlled....check it out..
Got a bluetti ac180p nice enough power for now can charge fast in less 2 hours ac wall. But cant charge it when its cold. Usually its out in the cold so no solar charging right now. Needs to be inside minimum at 41 degrees f. at 6 hours or better before charging. Use it a 7 degrees f. Appliances. It says there is no cold charging protection, well on google. Like my mebo 1600.
solar batteries. i have 3 Bluetti they work just fine.
I’m having this same issue when charging from a 48v lifepo4 battery into the solar input.
Really? That seems really odd. I solved my issue by using an inverter generator (new), works flawlessly. I wonder if you're overpowering it somehow.
@ EcoFlow says it’s triggering the overcurrent protection system. “Our overcurrent protection system is designed to dynamically adjust based on the duration of the detected excessive current flow. This means that the threshold for triggering protection measures is not a fixed value but varies depending on how long the current exceeds normal levels.” Which seems odd considering I’m only imputing 48volts so the EcoFlow unit should only pull the amount of current it requires.
They are batteries. That is all. Calling them "generators" is fraud.
I was told a story...95% of the world's computer displays were made by FOUR! Manufacturers...I NEVER worry about the BIG NAMES. The same goes for these Power Stations. I usually pay 30-45 cents per Watt/Hr. I ALSO don't worry about Customer Service, because they are usually weak to non-existent!! I also stay within 500-2000 Watt/Hrs of storage.
If you are an older person I say to you, pay a little more and buy an electric start gen. Also if you can afford it buy one that also uses propane as well as gas. I am 78 so I know what I am talking about.
Good advice, and the one issue is have with this one. My older generators are actually "hillbilly" electric start, that is I took the pull cord mechanisms off and start them with a drill and socket. :) Honestly though, this new one is way easier to pull than I thought It would be, much easier than my old 3000 was.
@@HollisDoesStuff Start your generators every month. I have a calendar marked to start generators.
if you were to get youself a few solar panels, even used ones, they would be cheaper than a fuel generator, and they could charge your power station(s) w/o the noise, the use of fuel, and the lack of carbon monoxide generation, and you could get rid of that 50 ft. cord (or use it for something else). Ideally, one would incorporate pv panels and a generator to have the best of both worlds, while also having a certain amount of redundancy. There are even ways to expand your power station capacity with the use of regular batteries (preferrably the Life type), which would be cheaper than buying the proprietary expansion batteries. Something to ponder.
Yup, except my property is not conducive to solar. Most of it is in shadow December and January. However it's something I'm looking into.
Good video. I was considering making a video on this very subject. I had one of those cheap one a long time ago for work, followed by a Honda 2000is, then a 3000is, then a champion 12kw, followed by a 26kw diesel with auto transfer switch. I added a auto controller on the Genny as well. We get power outages often here in Northern Alberta.
Go for it!
I was looking into this inverter generator on Amazon, I just wish they offered a dual fuel option. I'm going with WEN for that reason.
Personally I prefer gas. Easier to transport, cheaper (in part of the world), and propane can be an issue in really cold weather. But, I can see the advantages too.
same... I wouldnt run it until i need it , and having gas sit around for months until I needed it wouldnt be a great idea
@unijabnx2000 True! I'd run it at least once a month to make sure everything's functional in the event I actually need it.
Good to see you figured it out.
Champion says that you should not use any cord longer than 25 feet
Maybe, but that's not realistic unless running power tools outside. A generator should be 25 feet away from your house. That means you need longer than 25 feet cord, unless it's straight from the generator to however you connect to your house, you're probably going to have to get up to a window, door, or even outside socket, maybe around corners, over small hills, etc., not accounting for some slack in the cord. The answer is to run heavier gauge wire to overcome the distance problem, in my opinion anyway. I'd rather have the generator further away for noise and carbon monoxide reasons.
What do you think about a exhaust extension
If running it in a shed or something, great idea, just be aware of heat from the exhaust and not having it too close to wood or flammable stuff.
This seems like a hostage video. Like a forced retraction? I liked that you recommended the Solar Play and Eco Play. 😊
Its heavy like a garden hose. Happy for the 230V system in EU
Take your 30a cord and plug it into a generator inlet with a interlock on your breaker panel.
Assuming you have one, of course.
My Gen has that 30 amp twist female, I want to put a 40 amp connection on my meter box for input to home BECAUSE I want to UPGRADE my Generator in the future with a 40 amp connection, thus my QUESTION: Is there an ADAPTER that will plug INTO the 30 amp gen female plug that then will plug into a 40 amp plugged cord?
I think there's a jump to 50 amp, and there's definitely adapters for that.
Yes use a 50a
I fell for the sponsored you tube videos. But still turned out good. Purchased a Anker Solix 1000 from Anker during black Friday Era for $419. Which can be recharged quickly with my Champion 4200/3500 inverter generator. Like you said this will be my indoor power without the noise and cords everywhere. Good informative video!👌
You have to watch your amperage with only using 3 plugs off the 30 amp port. That will limit you to roughly 10 amps per line if all pulling the same power/ powering a load.
Definitely don't run 3 1500 watt appliances at once.
I wired up a generator inlet with a main breaker interlock. I can send power to whichever breaker I want now.
Good setup!
Portable Power Stations (PPS)
Good solution, however a lot of generators don't have the 120V 30A plug, but rather 240V split phase one. Running a 240V 30A cord to the house then getting a breakout adapter is the solution for those types of generators.
Good advice. Size the cord to the generator.
Minor quibble: Don't run any compressor bigger than a little pancake nailer on an extension cord - plug the compressor directly into the wall and increase the length of air line instead. Bigger compressors really like to weld their plug onto the end of an extension cord. I'm not the only one who's had to learn this the hard way.
Was the first thing I ever noticed about my air compressor was the massive warning to always run it directly to the wall outlet, not off an extension cord.
Very much agree...now. I was running mine on too long cords, lucky it still works at all. Now if remote from garage it's plugged in directly to the generator with, as you said, longer air hose.
Wrong. 10 guage SO cord will run most any compressor just fine
I went a slightly different but similar way. I purchased two 30 amp 10 gauge cords 25 feet long. 50 feet total but if I dont need that much length I dont have to deal with all that extra cord and extra weight. I use the same "splitter" you use to go to the normal 120 outlets.
Great solution!
Plot twist: The other one would not run his coffee pot so he shot it.... LOL
Good information on your video….I picked up the 50 footer 30 amp with 3 outlet adapter….i have 2 10 foot extension cords coming that are 10 gauge and 15 amps, will they be ok to use with the adapter being 20 amps on each of the 3 plugins ? Thanks for the video it was very informative 👍
Should be good, as long as the gauge is the same.
@@HollisDoesStuffI’m sorry I’m a little confused when you sad “as long as the gauge is the same “…….same gauge as what? I got the 50 foot RV cord to go to my generator with the same adapter cord to plug in my 2 x10 foot extension cords ( both are 10 gauge and 15 amp) that will power a fridge and recharge my EcoFlow power bank. I’m pretty new to all this stuff and I wasn’t sure which wire you were referring to that has to be the same gauge. Thank you again
@thfourme if your extension cords are 10 gauge, you're good. You could probably even get away with 12 gauge for the short ones that are connected to the big one. Think of it like plumbing; one big pipe can feed multiple smaller pipes.
@ gotcha…thank you 👍
Good advice, I don't run anything less than 12 guage from the generator to the cabin. I might look into picking up a 30amp RV cable at some point, but I don't pull that much power at the moment. Good video.
Thanks!
Sounds like you are suffering from Brand Resentment, IE You'd like the Eco-Flow or the Bluetti but you either can't afford them or you don't like spending money, Another thing is Sogens are not a scam, they are made to do a certain job and they do it very well and most of them have a 5 or 6 year warranty, Also you have to look at what type of batteries they have in them, The reason people buy Eco-Flow and Bluetti is because people expect certain standards and these two brands tick all the boxes, So don't go knocking the Market leaders because you can't afford them or don't want to spend the money, I am pretty sure if you were put in a room and offered either of these two brands or the one you have Then I am sure that you would walk out with either the Eco-Flow or the Bluetti, You appear to want to get out of it as cheaply as possible and in the process you resent the Ones you Can't Have, You've bought a No Name Brand Sogen, The Bottom Line Is, Regardless of the Brand If it does what you want then it has done it's job and that is all that matters, So forget the Brand thing Just enjoy what ever you buy and leave it at that, But don't try and try and tell us that That Sogen is on the same level as Ec0-Flow or Bluetti.
Solar panels are not generators paired with battery charge controller are battery chargers nothing more nothing less
built my own 420wh dc power station for 60 bucks, fits inside a mini ammo can with other cables and adaptors. has a 12v port so i can add an inverter if i want. has 2 100w bidirection usb-c boards. keep the 12v port fused at 25 amps, its unregulated and doesnt care, usually runs about 13.5v. runs a diesel heater just fine, and the 2 usb-c ports can either fast charge in about 3-4hrs or trickle charge from 2x mini 15w solar panels. got way better space utilization with prismatic 32ah lifepo4 cells, the power station mfg are still way too cheap to not use bottom tier cylindrical cells and active cooling. i went with passive cooling, big heat sinks but basically water tight. no bms, i just use active balance boards which imo are better and dont have useless lockout protection features or wifi/bluetooth/screens which drain capacity.
Thank you - I've been wading through the multitude of youtube videos for a month now and am more confused than ever lol. I've concluded that, instead of being lured in by the marketers, I need to first put more effort into figuring out what I absolutely NEED during a temporary power outage vs. off-grid for months following a natural catastrophe, versus just saving money by reducing electric consumption -- and then look for specific solutions. I'm a single, 70yoa city girl and would love to go off-grid completely but I live a frugal, minimalistic lifestyle anyway so I don't need to spend thousands and thousands to power a typical modern lifestyle house for even a day. At any rate, your chart is interesting and helpful and making the clear distinction between a generator and a power station might be a wake up call for some people :)
I buy my Ecoflow DELTA 2 because of a power outbrake who happen now and then so i can have my pc, coffe machine, refrigiator, and heat pump going for a couple of hours nothing else and it is very good for that. I also have a new gas generator it can run on propane and gasoline in case and in the turbulent situation in the world today it is good to have as a backup!
Generator has to be a pure sign wave inverter you gen prob has a modified inverter
I ordered a big Ecoflow because I need 30 amps of backup power and 220 voltage for the water pump. I'll charge it with a 7.5 pto generator on a small diesel tractor, our current back-up power system. I want to be able to switch on the generator panel in a power outage, get through the night, and then take my time about firing up the generator tractor to recharge the Ultra, if necessary. In most situations to date, power outages have only lasted about eight hours at most... except for the Ice Storm. It lasted ten days.
I would advise you to see if you can actually charge it with your generator. I can't with my regular generators, I have a 1200 watt and a 3000 watt. The Ecoflow won't do it, constantly reboots, charging is erratic, the load is all over the place causing chaos at the generator. They need really clean power to charge. You might be okay with a PTO, but I'd be interested in the results, let me know how it goes. I'm going to be getting an inverter generator for this purpose, video on that will be forthcoming.
Got my Jackery on sale on Amazon for .37 cent WH Jackery 1000v2
Yep and gas generators aren’t generators until you put gas in it.
The glow plug only uses current during initial ignition...or does it draw continuously?
Just the first couple of minutes until ignition.
Solar generator is not a false term. It’s more of a generator than a gas one. A solar generator actually makes electricity, where a gas generator needs fuel. Sure it’s lower levels of power, but saying it’s a marketing term is just wrong.
Of course, it failed. All Ecoflow products use cheap high-frequency, transformerless inverter technology that's only good for a couple of years' worth of use at most. You should have purchased a low frequency, transformer-based inverter charger instead.
Just know the Ecoflow may not be any more reliable. I have two delta 2s and a wave 2 air conditioner. I was camping with one of the deltas and running the wave 2. I was actually running it as what I thought was an ups but the wave 2 shut off. Upon inspection I noticed the delta 2 was depleted of battery and would not charge by any means. Took two weeks to get Ecoflow to come up with a return authorization and my choices were to return for a refurbished unit once mine was received or wait for mine to be serviced. Decided to go with the refurbished and still took almost a month to get the process completely resolved.
I would agree. Why push it if you don't have to. Those diesel heaters are the way to go. Such a little draw and crazy efficient with the fuel. Interesting video thank you!.
Thanks!
