OP DE KOFFIE #21 - ASTRID CREVE & MARIJKE HELLEMANS
There it is, the final one.... the closing of the year means the closing of this project, Op de Koffie has come an end. It was a a year of encounters , of reconnecting with old friends, of playing music, both beautiful and interesting, of doing things I didn't know myself capable of, of deadlines and self discipline, but mainly of love, lots of love.
For the final episode I invited my dearest singer/composer Astrid Creve and guitarist Marijke Hellemans. They are good friends with whom I played intensely for a couple of years in Astrids beautiful band Alfredo (Solomototekanos). I always felt a natural connection to Astrid and her music, as if both came from a foreign place I have known in an undefined, far away, but vaguely accessible past. Utterly personal, her voice and her music, telling tales that connect here and that far away place.
Marijke has always enchanted me very subtly. Almost unnoticeably, she makes everything more beautiful and profound. Adding exactly that layer of warmth and gentle gentle spark that intelligently lifts the music to another level.
What a joy to play again with these talented ladies.
While I had done all audio and video recording and post production myself for 20 episodes, this time I was very generously and skilfully helped by Shalan Alhamwy for filming, Martijn Veulemans for sound recording and Farah Kassem for video editing. Gratitude for those beautiful people and their talent.
We played an old Alfredo song that never really got finished and now was given the title Manual for Peace and Quiet. Next come two songs Astrid wrote for her solo project Arra di Allas: 3 Years of Hunger and Wet Wood.
As always, I wish to remind you that bass is the fundament of music and that you need decent speakers or headphones to hear the good stuff that happens in that spectrum.
I hope you enjoy this last episode and the one that came before. They stay available, until eternity, if I'm concerned, so you can always go back to them. It has been a very nurturing year, and that is largely due to the very loving response to these little moments I have been sharing. That fills me with gratitude.

OP DE KOFFIE #20 - SIMON LELEUX

When I met Simon, he was a teenager, but one of the kind who knows. He knew what he wanted, where he was going, and how he was going to get there. We got to know each other much better somewhat later playing, together in the Lâmekân ensemble and opening up the space of percussion dialogue there. It's in that period, during one of the nightly conversations in an Istanbul hotel room, that he shar...
OP DE KOFFIE #19 - DERYA TURKAN

My first experience playing with Derya Turkan was when he was invited as an honoured guest to play on the first Lâmekân ensemble album Gülzar-î Vefâ. I realised immediately what a master he was when I noticed that everybody in the band was playing better and more together due to his presence. What a gift to be able to lift up people and connect them more. And then numerous hours listening to hi...
OP DEKOFFIE #18 - JAN SEBASTIAAN DEGEYTER

Long time friendship, that is what you here in this episode. Jan-Sebastiaan and I know each other from when the animals could talk... This multi talented guy, a combination of a precious sensitivity and an absolute dedication to whatever he's involved with, has been on the "Op de Koffie"-list since the beginning. I was going to keep some specials to the end, I said, and here it is, three episod...
OP DE KOFFIE #17 - Jolan Decaestecker

I got to know Jolan Decaestecker in the studio we share and I was immediately touched by his sensitive way of being in this world. Then, knowing him a little better, I discovered how hard working he is. This combination, if intelligently navigated with sufficient humility, is often a recipe for very good art, and so it is with this young fellow. As a musician and as a producer, he does just gre...
OP DE KOFFIE #16 - Haroun Iqbal
Переглядів 728Рік тому
Ever so often one encounters truly inspiring people, Haroun Iqbal is one of those. A young guitar player with the drive of a curious and enterprising musician. He is open, searching, developing a universe of his own by diving deep into a couple of traditional styles and marrying them to his jazz background. Diving deep into styles that happen to be close to my heart as well. It was an energisin...
OP DE KOFFIE #15 - Beto Robledo
Переглядів 348Рік тому
Beto Robledo is one groovy Mexican beast. We met during jam sessions in a very cool house of friends we have in common and I fell in love with his natural feel for Afro-Latin grooves and his cutting jarana playing. He writes beautiful songs of which he brought two. We play for you Ya Se Va and Alegrias. Be sure to check his band Chapulines. As always I kindly remind you that listening with head...
OP DE KOFFIE #14 - Ira Shiran

Ira Shiran, yet another gentle wizard that I have the immense joy of playing with. We met through the very nice band Halva which brought us close in so many ways. Sharing beautiful music, never ending car rides, hotel rooms... Gentle, sensitive, always in service of the music and the group, always in search of yet another aesthetic experience, be it through food, art, or the shear beauty of hum...
OP DE KOFFIE #13 - Nathan Daems

Nathan Daems is one of those rare people who are touching and impressive at the same time. Few artists I know are so dedicated to the search, broad ánd deep, in form ánd spirit of music ánd life. It’s very beautiful to see and very touching and humbling to witness from a friends perspective. He is, next to being an impressively conscious being, a great master of different wind instruments, melo...
OP DE KOFFIE #12 - Myrddin

Myrddin is one of a kind. A true artist, devoted to his art with a faith I have rarely encountered. There's something beautifully wild about this man, untamed but oh so refined and sensitive. His music is flamenco and it's not. Most of all, it reflects his life of searching, days, nights, wandering on the fretboard, on the strings, turning inwards and bringing all that out, more connected to na...
OP DE KOFFIE #11 - Lara Rosseel

Lara Rosseel is one of Belgiums finest double bass players. Always grooving and always in service of beauty. She's a very talented composer too, combining her love for groove with a great sense of harmony, melody and space. There's a poetic depth to whatever she sets her mind to. Check out her music, it's worth a serious detour. Lara has meant a lot to me. Both on a personal level as on a music...
OP DE KOFFIE #10 - Denisse Vargas
Переглядів 835Рік тому
I first heard Denisse Vargas sing on a jamsession and I was flabergasted. Where was such a voice hiding all this time… She’s an adventurous soul, who left her homecountry Mexico and landed in Belgium. I just love her singing, reminiscent of the great Latin American singers of the likes of Chavella Vargas. I also love her musical taste and visual art work. Check her band “Ave de Barro”, it’s so ...
OP DE KOFFIE #9 - Mark Jeanty

Mark Jeanty is een straffe man.

Viktor Perdieus is a saxophone player with a unique sound and intention. I was always a fan. We played together a while in a band called Alfredo, and jammed on the streets of Göteborg in Sweden, all beautiful memories with this beautiful human. I was recently blown away by a concert of the band "The Milk Factory", where he plays a beautiful role, colouring solemn landscapes of sound and harmony...
OP DE KOFFIE #7 - Farnoosh Khodadadeh

Farnoosh Khodadadeh is maybe not so tall in size, but I've rarely seen bigger love infused personalities. She has a heart that can accommodate the world, with all it's joy and all it's sorrow, she will carry it all. So beautiful to see the teachings of the great sufi poets such as Rumi and Hafez practised and alive in this wonderful being. Farnoosh is an intensive care nurse and a musician. She...

Echt heel bijzonder. Mooi samenspel. Groot compliment.
What is the band y’all mentioned at the beginning of the video? I love the Hands in Motion album I have and would love to find more of your music! Is there a link to this other project?
Hi, very glad you like what we do. The band is called Spëcht. Just released an album called Triptyques.
🎉

Kemençeye yakışmamış.
I think it does beautifully. I suppose we have a different opinion about this.
I’ve been following and listening Derya over 20 years and he is definitely a virtuoso of the kemençe. I appreciate you to invite him and play together. 👏🏻
I agree, virtuoso for sure, but most importantly, very musical. Thank you, I was so lucky he accepted.
❤
This is so wonderful Robbe, Astrid, Marijke, and the Op De Koffie team! Thank you for the charming and excellent tunes!

Instant subscriber...I'm lying, first I saw your vid with Master Myrddin
this is wonderful, no suprise. Myrddin, one of my 3 favorite artists. There is no 1, 2, 3, Myrddin, Narciso Yepes and Gentle Giant (more than one artist!) So beyond anything, anytime... Thank you Robbe! I so love the vid with his father, Mr. Koen de Cauter (Zingt Gazelle) and his sons, and also the vid with Myrdinn's daughter, Miss Imre... so much love there
Great!!!

Great innovative performance. Love the approach to berimbau.
Beatiful! 🖤
Leuk man🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
Hi Robbe! Good afternoon, I started listening to Myrddin this afternoon, the magician of the Belgian flamenco guitar! He is a wonderful being, I have walked through his videos in search of his guitar and his dasein, he is a very sincere, simple man, who is there for all of us, it is wonderful through you to find him and now to find Koen de cauter in a beautiful combination of poetry and flamenco guitar! abrazo
So nice, how you feel his personality through his music. Sensitive you are.
