Sneak Peek: 1999 Civic HX to Civic EX, Acura Integra Exhaust Conversion
I picked up a low mileage Acura Integra exhaust for my Civic HX! Why? A few reasons.
1. The current exhaust has leaks. Corrosion from 210k miles would make replacing components difficult. If I am going through the trouble it’s time to upgrade.
2. Performance. This was the last stepped primary header available from Hedman. I did a bunch of research to track down the old part number and they had to dig around to find it. They don’t make them like this anymore. It is an absolute work of art. Every other header on the market has oversized primaries for a D-series that hasn’t been heavily modified.
3. Sized right. The Integra resonated mid-pipe and muffler measures about 2” inner diameter compared to the smallest aftermarket exhaust systems that measures 2.3” inches, with many measuring 2.5”. Again, this would be oversized for my application. The Integra exhaust is 1/4” bigger than the OE HX system with smooth mandrel bends. Currently my exhaust piping measures about 1.75” and has crush bends.
4. Environment. The new cat should burn cleaner than mine with 210k miles on it. New upstream and downstream O2 sensors should help as well.
5. Weight distribution. Moving the cat from the header to under the car takes weight off the nose. A stainless steel manifold weighs less than cast iron as well, but larger piping overall brings more weight. In this case weight distribution is likely a larger benefactor than weight savings.

I replace both radiator fans with used OE units after checking fuses and relays. At 154,400 miles, the resistor on my 1999 Boxster’s driver side fan went bad. I opted for two replacements removed from 2003 & 2004 model years with only 50k miles. Total cost was $115 v $900 for new Porsche parts. It took me about 3 hrs each side. Work completed 28 July 2024.

KNIPEX Circlip 4611A2 and Harbor Freight Snap Ring Plier Review
Does he have a website? I have a 99 996 and look for new boot
Nope, I just took the old assembly to an upholstery shop, told them what I wanted, left it with them and picked up the finished product a few days later. I'm sure just about any upholstery shop could do the same for you. Best of luck with it!
@@gearswitch5692 thank you
Do you have the part numbers?
I do not. If you look up an oem parts dealer online you should be able to find it easily.
Thanks bud i have the same problem
Amazing video thankyou
Yeah, I made the same mistake. Honetly, the tab was just a small cover for that hole. Mazda could have don't better with this. Being broke doesn't affect the functionality anyways. Looks-wise yeah it sucks now
Yep mine finally went at 113,000 tensioner pulley melted.
Thank you for the thorough review of your BRZ! I recently got my hands on a '17 BRZ premium myself. I took note of your comment at 5:35 about keeping the factory air intake system. Where did you read about this? I am contemplating replacing the factory intake with a cold air intake and filter but after hearing you say that it's recommended to keep the factory, I am now on the fence. Thanks!!
Hey, I did research at the time in multiple forums and that was the assessment I came to. Here is one thread as an example: www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11990 While cold air intake (CAI) manufacturers website may sell you on the idea, it is worth looking for other points of view before coming to a decision. On most modern naturally aspirated cars that I have modified, at best a CAI shifts hp up the rpm band, producing high rpm gains at the expense of low rpm power/torque. This may have not been the case 25yrs ago when auto makers left more hp on the table.
Love the car. I’ve got a 96 HX, currently at 527,550 miles and counting.
That is impressive! Any issues for other HX owners to be on the look out for along the way? The previous owner of mine mentioned the EGR ports and manifold had built up carbon and were cleaned out after CEL for Insufficient EGR Flow. The clutch switch pads were a head scratcher for me, but now I know the issue is common on these Hondas
@@gearswitch5692 Frequent oil changes, and keep an eye on your transmission output shaft seals. Both sides of mine were leaking pretty good. Cross referenced the seals and it came back as OEM Honda. Most of our distributors on these HX models will end up leaking as well. All in all, every suspension component is still factory. Not bad for a Honda from 1996.
@@gearswitch5692 Just generic maintenance items. I can say, my Inner tie rods have a little play, so that’ll be my next maintenance item. I plan on doing wheel hub bearings after that as well.
@@JuanRodriguez-ek9ud Thank you for sharing! I replaced the inner and outer tie rod ends on mine with oem boots. I even purchased the special 40mm steering rack adjustment tool to tighten the rack up. However, all together it did little to help the play on center and there is a slow leak from the seals. I'll be replacing the rack this fall.
So what is the difference ?
How much did it cost to convert the rear drums to rotors? Was it a lot of work? I didnt know these came with drums
Yes, even the EX model came with drums surprisingly, but the Si and Integras did not. I keep a pretty detailed maintenance/parts log and the conversion totaled ~ $1200 with all the new suspension OEM arms & bushings that make sense to do at the same time. That was with some good buys and sales. It took me longer than I expected to complete the work, but it was also my first time going through it, late fall and working under jack stands rather than a lift. Budget at least 8hrs if you take your time and are working under similar conditions. If you need a parts breakdown let me know and I can post what I have in the description.
@@gearswitch5692 wow thats a lot of money...thanks for the info
I wouldn't go for the recall. Still running great after all these years!
You just saved me. Thank you.
Can you write in detail which cable on the car you plugged into which cable on the rafio?
Thanks for the video, it help me a lot
Outstanding content!
Fantastic video I have the same problem I this is the only video with a lot a detail I have a question do you submerge the board completely on the solution or just half way please let me know thank you great video 👍👍👍👍
I submerged it entirely in the glass pyrex for about 30 mins before brushing off the corrosion and being sure to let the "dirty/corroded" IPA drip off so that it didn't evaporate leaving the deposits in place
@@gearswitch5692 thank you
Nice one, might be worth getting a car cover there.
does the floor board lay flat if your full size wheel is there? i know you removed it in your video, just asking in regards to the situation where you need to use your compact spare, and then put the flat full size wheel in the trunk
I no longer own an 86 twin, but I don’t think the trunk liner would lay flat with a full size wheel in the spare well if I remember correctly.
Too late! 😂
Sweet looking car.
Polish up the headlight lenses with a scratch remover liquid.
That is def on my list of items to get to. I'm taking care of mechanicals first, but I will find the time eventually
The boot is very nice. I don’t understand why the video doesn’t show removing the old one and installing the new one.
Sure thing, let me elaborate: I removed the shift boot assembly (plastic insert with the OEM boot attached) from the center console. I dropped the assembly off, along with my new shift knob at a local independent upholstery shop and explained what I wanted crafted. They removed the old boot and glued a newly sewn genuine Texas leather one into place on the same plastic insert. It pops right into place, same as the old one comes out, not much to show there. The purpose of this video is to show that often times quality products are not found on Amazon, eBay or from chains. They can be manufactured in struggling downtown shops for a great price and good conversation. I’m not selling any products or advertising any merch either, just trying to change hearts and minds!
Good luck 😊
Thanks, I’ll be needing all the luck on this one
I got the same struts too!
Two years later and I still really enjoy them on everyday roads!
Automaitc is better.
“Manual is too hard to concentrate on while driving 🤓☝️”
very wrong.
From new, these were just as rubbery. I get in a lot of them and a lot of them feel exactly the same to shift as they did when new. Just as I remember them.
Thanks for that insight!
Great man, thank you, you saved me on this one
Just did this today, may actually buy some shielding for the hoses a bit later though
Sorry you had such a rough time. Most I know are into the ownership for 100k+ with no issues but you can’t discount there are a few lemons out there as with all cars and manufacturers. Still loving mine. Best handling car under a Porsche for sure.
I agree with you 100% on it being such a great handling platform. Glad you are having better luck with yours! My experience was enough to keep me away from the Subaru brand for good. If Toyota manufactured the engine on the next redesign I would be making a down payment.
@@gearswitch5692 I’ve heard rumours that may become the case. 🤞🏻
Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it!
This is in a replacement video. It’s you selling a boot.
Thanks
Thanks. Very helpful.
You saved me from destroying the seat harness connector. It wasn't readily apparent to this knucklehead.
Both of these bushings had fallen out and were siting underneath the roof. Do you have a picture of how these should look when installed?
Hey, that is my mistake for not including a finished product shot in the video. Do you want me to post one of what it should look like fully installed or were you able to figure it out?
@@gearswitch5692 That would be great if you could put up a pic. I have not yet tried to install them.
Hope this helps: ua-cam.com/video/KgTYJVm9IF4/v-deo.htmlsi=m6e2BHci7Dmt4w7T
The best way to level them is to take the passenger side cable from the motor and use a drill to turn the cable and eyeball the level until they are equal.
Please can you explain how you got the cover off? I have the same seat as you, and I want to pull out the foam, but I can't figure out how to get the cover off. It feels like it is glued down around all the edges - and there is literally no information online on how it's done. You have the closest video, but you're missing the most important part. :(
Hey Ben, the seat cushion I had replaced it with was the same color and in better condition. I just swapped out cushion after removing the seat. I did not reupholster the cushion. have re-upholstered the driver side bolster surround on this car and several other seat bottoms on different cars. Usually the cover is held to the cushion using "hog rings." These can be cut off with wire cutter pliers and replaced with zip-ties. Take a look, go slow, and don't give up!
Thank you. I was wondering how people change this without being able to pull it back like front wipers. Removing that cap is helpful. Ty
My car comes with this but the armrest is bent and needs replacement, to remove just the arm rest do i need to remove the tracks as well? Or how can i remove it?
Excellent video cheers
I have a black brz ts. When you remove the torque dip with the uel catted header and a tune suddenly this car is one of the most fun cars you can drive ever. Ive owned porsches bmws mercs audis you name it and ive driven virtually everything. Brz is more fun then 99% of them
Great video, really helpful, thanks. One question for you: The metal "spike" type tool you used to help finalize the lineup of the alignment bolt holes on getting the toe and camber control arms back in place, what is the name of that tool and where can I get one?
Hey, great question! I just purchased a couple more this black friday and had trouble coming up with the exact name to search. This is what I ordered: Mayhew Tools 40100 9" Rolling Head Pry Bar and Mayhew 40101 16-Inch Rolling Head Pry Bar. They are quality tools to have for the collection and are made in the USA. I just used them when rebuilding the rear suspension on my Civic and they are very convenient to have. Hope that helps!
thanks!
I just bought a cx 5 (2020) i noticed the settings would start changing, or radio would change different channels (u could see the screen changing like someone was moving the knob) in assuming it's some sort of electrical problem? I asked the Toyota dealership & they said it needs a software update from Mazda (ever heard of this)? I'm so confused what's wrong with it.
Hmm, it may be possible that Mazda has to do a firmware update to the infotainment system. I wouldn't think there would be a charge for that, but I would call your dealer ahead of time to ask. Some companies push out updates "over the air" but from what I've read the 2020 likely has to be updated from a usb thumb drive.
Very helpful thank you
Great Video I'm waiting on my driver's upper leather Will be doing this maneuver Very helpful Was thinking that I had to remove seat Anyways Thank You
How long did this battery last after you refilled it?
If I recall maybe another 6months to a year at most. The original battery lasted roughly 7 years
How does that explain the noise if the AC compressor is on and when it is off. We replaced everything and the noise is coming from a metal fuel line that runs underneath the cold air intake.
Did you ever use a lightweight pulley set or crankshaft pulley by any chance?
I have not. Lots of info on the ft86club forum though. Best of luck!
Do you think i could replace the leather with something non leather?
You should be able too, but I would make sure it will hold up well to the wear and tear it will see on ingress/egress
my boxter has hissing sound while driving. recently water pump replaced. it made air coolant leakage. is it related ? how do I fix the issue?
