LINOCUT CARVING TOOLS: FLEXCUT TOOLS - A REVIEW
Переглядів 4,7 тис.8 місяців тому
I've been using the Speedball carving tool for my linocuts for around 15 years....and no hate toward the Speedball tool. It's awesome. But I've had my eye on some higher quality carving tools that can carve all kinds of lino, or wood, that are easily sharpened and sturdy so I wanted to give the Flexcut tools a try! This video is not sponsored - I wanted to share my experience using these tools ...

Thank you so much for this video. It will help me to start doing linocut
I'm learning lino print and I am having a hard time understanding how to carve 😢
Beautiful! I'm an absolute beginner, really enjoyed your video. I love the Seahorse. Thank you :-)
Thank you for the precious tips ❤ i’m a beginner so they’re quite useful !
So so glad you find it helpful!!!
Ma'am. Most of your prints are usually related to ocean. But every piece is so beautiful and unique.
Haha you caught me! I am a bit ocean obsessed!!
Hi, love your videos and find your artwork very beautiful. However I didn't catch what you said at the end about ?editioning? your prints? Or did you say something else? Also how long do the prints need to dry?
Hi!! Thanks so much for your questions. I did mention editioning prints! It will be my next video :) If I use water based ink, the prints dry within a couple of hours. If I use oil based ink, it takes weeks (about a month) for the ink to dry!
Thank you. Do you use the glass to control the quantity of ink u use? Can I use something else. Thank u
I like the glass because it is a smooth, flat surface that won't absorb any ink! Makes it easy to coat the brayer (roller) evenly and consistently. Easy to clean and reusable forever :) I just took the glass out of a picture frame I got from the thrift store!
ran into you and your work at a craft fair a year or two ago, so cool to find talented maritimers on YT! love your prints <3
Thats awesome! Happy you have found me here as well :)
I color mine before carving. That way I can see everything the whole time.
Yeah! Absolutely - works so well! I prefer to add the colour as I go :)
Hello :) Super nice video. Thanks. Can you give a little inside to me, what pen you did use to make the hole block black. I am new to linocut and would appreciate any kind of help. Thanks :)
Hi! I use a black sharpie marker for that :)
Your videos are wonderfully helpful and enjoyable!
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoy the videos!
Such an excellent set of demos. You have done a great job for us all. :-)
Thank you so so much!
Where do you buy your large lino blocks?
I really like the Essdee brand lino! But i buy from Curry's Art Store, Dick Blick, or from amazon
Another wonderful video that helps many. Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you for such a detailed and wonderful video. This answers several questions I had.
So glad you are enjoying my videos!
Really beautiful and such a helpful video to see your process
Thank you! So glad you found it helpful!
Thanks for this detailed description. So many useful tips. I don't know why I didn't think of the "take a careful peak and re-ink" thing. I will definitely try that next time; might save me from having to do like 20 prints to get one I'm happy with!
I am surprised with how often I use that trick!!! It's truly quite often and has saved me from having to put many prints into the recycle pile
Thanks for the video! Been drawing my designs for the past few weeks and have my beginners kit and paper arriving today! Definitely going to be using these techniques you've shown here, thanks!
Thanks so much! Glad you find it helpful :)
Beautiful art🥰🎨😍
Thank you so much!
BAI SCIAQUADI
So helpful! Thank you.
Thank you! So glad you enjoy it and find it helpful!
so beautiful
Thank you!! Let me know if you use it as inspiration or you follow the tutorial!
I would very much like to know about editioning, please and thank you.
Coming right up! ☺️
Thank you so much for this very detailed video..i want to start lino printing and i wanted to purchase these blades but worried a bit since they are quite spendy. I will be getting these now 😊
Still loving my flexcut tools even now!! They are worth it for sure!! :) happy printing :)
What paper that you used?
I use tracing paper to transfer my sketch to my lino, carbon paper works great as well! I print on smooth cardstock :)
My art teacher is having us do this but 3 kids have cut themselves and 1 got stitches today 😬
Definitely stabbed myself a few times when I first started learning how to do this!
I’m going to use the sharpie idea -❤
It's the best!!! Hope you find it helpful :)
Super nice work! Great fun to watch 😍
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)
wow i was watching this to get a good idea of sizes for my own linocuts and realized right at the end of the video that i have bought from you before on etsy! i gave your selkies print to a friend as a housewarming gift (she loved it). hi from texas!!
Omg! That's awesome - glad you found me here and I hope the video gave you some ideas!!! Thanks for the support of my work and Hi from Canada! ☺️
Hi, really good video on how you work. Can you please put a link or write the name of the marker u uses to cover areas so that u can see what u are carving?
Hi there!! I am using a Sharpie brand black marker! Just the regular original Sharpie :)
Thanks ❤
This brought back so many good memories from a printmaking class I took in college. (That wonderful ink roller sound 😍) I’m thinking of jumping back into printing and this was the perfect re-introduction! Thank you!
Yay!! Absolutely jump in - I hope you have fun creating!
What paper are you using for the art prints? Meaning the one you sell to your customers.
Hi there!! I am using a smooth 80 lb cardstock paper. Sometimes I also use stonehenge or japanese papers!
This is the best thing for a newbie to see, seeing all the ways to do it wrong I totally understand what to aim for now.
So glad you found it helpful!!! Happy printing!
Im wondering if layering a piece of linoleum with ink & then transfering the image using white tracing paper would work?
Absolutely something to try!! Let me know if it works!
Wonderful.
Thank you!
That’s so adorable and i love Paramore so much I’m very happy someone is using their music!
Paramore is awesome! Glad you like the print :)
I'd love a tutorial about creating editions. Thank you for doing these tutorials!
Coming up as my next lino-cut related video!!!!
great work, I'm amazed at the finesse you can achieve with this material. I've got an Esdee kit and honestly: the "1mm" lead is impossible to use (digs absolutely nothing, impossible to sharpen too), the 2mm still makes much more than 2mm. It's just a nightmare! What brand do you use?
I am using the Speedball carving tool! Love it. Flexcut tools are also great if you want to invest in some high quality carving tools!
Thank you so much for sharing this! It’s helped me so much! What size brush are you using here?!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoy it :) I am unsure of the sizes but I am using a large and medium sized square/flat brush, a medium sized round brush and a small round detail brush!
I’m using a printmaking ink made for fabric that dries way too fast for me, do you have an ink that has a longer working time?
You can use an oil based ink! When it dries, it doesn't wash out. It can be more difficult to print (need to use a lot of pressure) but it doesn't dry quickly. You could also try silkscreen ink but it might be too runny/liquidy for printing a linocut
@@ehollingsheadart Thanks for the tips!
Can you wash the Lino block clean after making lots of prints ?
Absolutely!! I am using a water-based ink that washes off with just water. I use cold water, since the block is made of rubber, as hot water can compromise the rubber. If you use an oil-based ink to print with, you will need to use soap, vegetable oil or a chemical solvent to clean the block!
@@ehollingsheadart thank you so much…
I love this selkie print! So evocative!
Thanks so much!
Does a thicker paint help? I've been using acrylic and it blurbs into the gaps I carve? I don't know how to prevent that!?
If I understand correctly, you are asking about printing thr carving? Get yourself some block printing ink! Will work faaaaaaar better than paint!
@@ehollingsheadart okay thank you! I've never tried anything but acrylic... now to go shopping!
Really useful tips, thanks!
Thank you! So glad you find it helpful
How fun is that!! Your detail work is amazing!! What a great tutorial!! Thank you so much for sharing this 😊
Thank you!! I am so glad you found it helpful
Super nice tutorial & work here 😍 Thank you!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for making this excellent video and I look forward to watching more of your tutorials ❤
Hehe thank you!
I just started, and this video is so helpful. Thank you!
So glad you found it helpful!!
I would love to learn about editioning prints please. Love your clear instructional content! Thank you
This is a good one!!! I'll add it to my list for future videos!
What board do you cut on?
If you are referring to the type of material I carve into to create my lino-cuts, I am using Essdee brand lino. It's a firm rubber!
