Mind. Blown.
Just came across your video. Not sure which I like better. The fly or the music!! Guess I’ll have to the one up and give it a try here in Minnesota
Thanks a ton. The Band is called "the insanitizers" local band here. Let me know how it works for ya out there!
This is awesome! Great video.
I would use an X-Acto saw blade the fits the X-Acto handle , that would probably work real well and also sub with balsa wood
Hi , Still making this line ? Can not find it on the web site, thanks !!
We are trying tonre negotiate the terms to make more. They upped my minimum to 500 per grain weight, which is a ton. Hopefully we can get them made soon
What length shank is ideal for the tie?
I like 2.5" - 3". If you are going after kings or are in water with a good amount of color you can definitely go bigger.
33mm is my normal length.
Perfect! Do you guys ship internationally? Getting some flys sorted for a trip to Greenland
are you a fan of the loon uv light. I've got a small loon travel light it does not seem to set the resin. Thoughts?
The little nano light struggles. The bench light is good, but you'll have to check the battery often. If the battery is low, it will still light the LED, but won't do whatever voodoo it needs to cure. Try a fresh battery and see if it cures for you.
@@theportlandflyshop I was thinking battery issue. What about the notion of different lights for different resins … ie loon or solareze. Do you need a light for each brand?
I haven't found that to be necessary at all. The loon light will cure everything I've used so far, including pro, solrez, and raidzap
Is there any reason you cannot simply remove the hook until you're done with the fly?
You can, for sure, but keeping the hook on helps with measuring porpotions.
funny don't worry you have a fellow asshole here great fly
Dumb question but what are you tying on? It looks like a triangular file. New to tube flies.
Not dumb at all. It's a tube needle, made specifically for tube flies. Each brand will have their own to fit their specific tube. The Aqua Flies and Pro Tube are the only ones I know of that are the same.
Thanks Jason good video. Great another dubbing tool I don't need coming my way thanks bro. I'll see you in April unless you hire me lol
well that looks really good
Thanks Rob
I was under the impression that natural jungle cock was illegal to import or sell. Is that incorrect?
Dirty and nice. Love it! Roots!
I'm grateful to learn the small tips and efficiency hacks that you provide. I'm doing a halfway decent job with making the Ultra Squids. However, the shortcuts that I can concentrate on to master are super important and time saving in the long run.
freaking awesome video. It's impressive that you can fit that much stuff on a 20mm shank
Awsome tie
Outstanding video...thanks, Jason.
Really appreciate the video. I am signed up for a guide school in May. I think I hopefully possess some qualities that would make me a good guide. Probably my biggest worry ATM is that I am not a straight ninja fly angler who kills it way harder than everyone else around me. Is becoming someone who can very confidently put people on fish consistently something you can learn through the job or do you think it is a must that your the best fly angler you know before becoming a guide. I would say personally if I'm being straight up that I'm a fair to good fly angler, not a complete pro. Be straight up, is that a big problem. Again thank you for the video. I've been considering so many different roads to go down lately but my heart is in the guiding goal but I'm not a spring chicken anymore goin on 32 so the real deal advice is much appreciated 🙏
A fair to good angler when you start is more than enough to get going. Most are in that category when they start. I've seen a lot of really green 1st years become studs after a while. I wouldn't worry about that at all. You'll get on the job training every day. As long as you make an honest effort every day, you'll get very good, fast. On slow days, keep changing flies, trying different water, etc. I don't know anyone who started guiding as a ninja. They may have thought they were, but after 5 years, you know a ton more, if that makes sense. Don't be nervous about what you don't know. Get the boat wet, go down river and start casting. Work from there.
Thank you! Most helpful and direct breakdown of what it takes that somebody has ever given me
Awesome! Glad it helped ya!
Love how you talk about tidiness and first impression, being humble and being entertainer, learning constantly and being confident at the same time … Guiding is challenging profession. I’ve never hired guide in my life but as a potential client I found value in your presentation.
Thanks a ton!
The model railroad convention they do in Portland every year is actually pretty cool.
I'm sure it is. I've the the model car stuff people do and it's really impressive
Great advice and video. How do you deal with cancellations ?
@TheHillcityhobo $100 deposit. if I cancel due to weather or poor fishing, 100% refund or transfer the deposit to a new date. Whatever is best for the client. If client bails over 30 days, full refund. Under 30 days, I keep the deposit, unless I am able to book the day, then full deposit refund. If it was a medical emergency I'd give a full refund usually.
Good job, sir. Truly ninja.
Did you ever try adding chromatic brush or arctic fox tail into the Lady Amherst section of the forward hackle? The teaser video that OPST released with Jerry tying shows a MUCH heavier hackle in that section. Nice tie! Going to be messing with this a lot
I love the chromatic brushes. I haven't used fox in this fly, but use it in a ton of others. You can use this video as a base, but go hog wild and explore other materials that you like. Options are limitless.
@@theportlandflyshop Thanks! Just trying to analyze the little info thats out there on this fly! I think it’s the coolest looking squid/intruder I’ve seen. Jerry’s proportions and translucent effects he gets on this and the dirty hoh are hard to replicate haha. It looked like there might be some sort of fox in the original OPST video in that section of the loop
@JAL94 there easily could have. I talked to Jerry at length before I did this video and took his recipe at that time, but, he evolves his patterns regularly. What this start as are not the same as they end up. He's always evolving
@@theportlandflyshop Thanks for the reply! It’s such a dope fly. My wallet is about to get a little lighter haha
@JAL94 for sure! Thanks for watching! If we can help in any way, say the word
Injection molded 40/40 tube is excellent. Injection molded 40/40 w a thread choke is mo' betta!
Great Video - "Fish flies you like" - YES! - I think the terminal stuff is the most spendy - shanks + hooks - Ostrich, ice dub, flash, schlepped, marabou - thats all you need
hey just saw video going to tie few myself. I have only been tying for few months was wandering because never seen before what was the reason you ran your scissors down the shlappen for
Thanks for cheing us out! To answer your question: running the scissors down the top side of the feather will fold the fibers back so they lay rearward as you wrap the feather. It won't matter as much on softer fibers, but if you're using saddle (stiffer feather) instead of schlappen, the collar will stick straight up, instead of facing rearward.
@@theportlandflyshop thanks I just recently found you online but watched about 15 vids after this 1 I live on Vancouver Island so unlike most of the flies I see from great lake vids I see 2 or 3 I would tie every 25 vids I but your's is more like 22-23 so thanks still have more to go I'm sure you will be hearing from me again with dumb questions lol.
Amazing what thread on a hook evolved into. I love this Hobby
🔥👍👍
Thanks for the video, amazing how a little change in depth with some shot can really be the difference. Split shot is obviously effective, could you also use a sink tip with a shorter leader to get down as well? Thanks for the content guys!
Yes, absolutely, Depending on water speed. The shot will sink the fly much faster, so in faster water, the shot will be more effective. Slower water, a tip will work good and cast better
You can get the tubing at a craft store clear and black for the ultra rig
Not sure if it's the same or not. The stuff aqua uses comes out of the medical field from what I understand. As long as it works...
Totally new to tube flies, but are you looking for rigid tubing or is it flexible? Great video!
@@evanhogan9219flexible. Tubes can break in cold winter Temps. Actually, it's common with some tube brands. The flexibility keeps your fly together, even in the coldest temps
Glad ur back! Missed you for sure.
Thanks a ton. Good to be back. Lots more coming!
When will they be on the website?
They are being packaged now. Hopefully next week! We'll do an insta post when they get in hand
Ridiculous
Colors??
@bobw9088 not sure yet on the full list. Blue, pink, purple, chartreuse, and black for sure
i love your ties for years , i just sorry i've not commented years sooner. keep up the good work this old fart learns very time you post . thanks
Thanks so much! I appreciate the support and kind words. We're just getting started. Have some fun stuff planned this year
Thanks, Jason!
Thanks for watching and supporting!
You made that ostrich loop look easy.. that’s one of few I have a hard time working with. I’ve resorted to just using clumps as a wing 🤷♂️🤦♂️😂 I’ve been loving the deer hair in a loop tho. Which would seem more difficult.. super fun technique. Great videos as always 👌
Enjoying you being back on the vise Jason, you really do have some of the best tying videos for steelhead. Always a pleasure to be in the shop as well. Cheers
Thanks so much! Had to take a long break for personal reasons, but good to be back. See ya soon! Hopefully on a river
💪🔥👍👍🎄🍾🥂
Nice looking Fly ... I don't know what it is but I hate working with Ostrich
when everything goes right, it's great and easy. When it goes wrong, it really goes wrong, lol
So good to see you back!! Thank you for another great fly!
Good ya back buddy! O.Gsub from the start. Back to ya Roots! Still watchin from the bottom of the world. Ha.
Great fly! Great name.A good looking woman in a mini skirt can intrude on me any day of the week.
Hey Jason, when you were guiding did you use 'guide flies''? simplifying a fly intentionally is just something that'd bother me a so im curious how you handled it. i always feel the more effort (time, looks, design, materials etc) i put into the fly the better i feel about choosing it. i've become so choosy about my flies now, my friends think ive lost my mind. i'll put a fly in my ''razorblade bag'' if a single material type is outta proportion or any superficial aesthetic i find off lol .
I definitely had flies that I didn't like. I tried to have all killer flies, but it wasn't feasible. I was guiding 3 days a week, plus another 3 or 4 in a shop. Silveys tandem tubes from Idylwilde were my guide flies for a long time. Simple, effective and durable.
Great to see you back man! Can't wait to tie a black and blue version of this for some NorCal winter run steelies.
Awesome! Make sure to let us know how it works for ya!
Good to see you back👍🏻
Really like this
Awesome pattern! Thanks for sharing 👍🏽.
Good grief man! Its about damn time!😉 Hope everything is back to normal. Thanks for getting back on here
I'm glad to see you again on you tube. And you surprise me again with a beautiful fly. A question. If I want to tying this intruder in a smaller size. Do I only use the one station?
One station would work just fine. It would be more along the lines of a traditional prom dress, but, nothing wrong with that! That fly is time tested and very effective
@@theportlandflyshop Thank you for your response
Yep kissed your videos! The bantam has been my go to pattern for a while.
Glad to see you back
Good to be back! Thank you
