Reel mowers are great at precision cutting and keeping grass healthy but there is an Achilles heel which is that they either can't cut some grass at a high enough level for the grass to be healthy or they can't cut tall grass down to a manageable height. You would think they would of made a top infeed attachment that sits on top of the main wheels to force the tall grass into the blades.

    Thanks for this video. Sometimes I let my grass overgrow and the Fiskars doesn't do a good job cutting it. But never realized that I could adjust the height to the highest setting first to bring it down a bit. And then go over it again on the lower height that I normally use on a weekly basis. Going to give that a try later today and see how it goes. I've also seen another tip that if you take off the orange cover guard off that the grass is thrown up instead of forward. This reduces the effort required to push the mower as it's not cutting the grass clippings again. Although, doing this wouldn't be as safe with the 4 dogs around. :-)

    Question on the Fiskars. How close to an edge can it cut? Does it go right up against your house and fence close enough to where you don't need to follow up with an edger? I have metal edging that's taller than my grass and I'm interested in the Fiskars if I'm able to skip edging afterwards.

    do you recommend bagging or mulching when cutting about 1 or 1.5 in high St. Augustine and can you pleased tell me what model Honda your using, I'm a home owner and and see most of the local gardening services using Honda's but I have no clue which one to get..

    • @smallsouthernlawn6909
      @smallsouthernlawn6909 3 роки тому

      So, St. Augustine shouldn't be cut that low. It really needs to be at 2.5" up to 4" because of its growth pattern. Because it does 90% of it's growth with stolons (the strands across the top of the ground) a very low cut could damage the lawn more than you would want. Regarding the bagging or mulching, I prefer to mulch but if my lawn gets too tall, I will bag the clippings because otherwise they will sit on the lawn and possibly cause brown spots by blocking the sun from the living grass. If the grass is still relatively short, I will mulch because the clippings will help feed the microbes which will produce nitrogen for the living grass.... which will save me money over time and provide natural food for the soil. As for the Honda in use on this video, it is my father-in-laws mower. I'm pretty sure its the Honda HRN 166 21" gas mower. I think he got it from Lowes. It does a great job cutting through the tough St. Augustine grass, you will just need to ensure you sharpen your blades twice a year to keep it cutting clean. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

    Good video, i can see the positives in this but also the negatives. First is price, thats a lot of string replacement. Second is you cant clean up weeds or grass growing in cracks or or stress joints in sidewalks. The real truth is it doesnt do anything more than a string does except cost alot more money. The upkeep on sharpening and greasing seems like it would be a pain and really its not much different than just putting a regular cutting blade on your weedeater and that cost $35 . I can see where some could see it to be efficient for them but from my point of view, i cant justify the cost.. Thanks for your view on the product and i hope it works well for you though...

    Great video. I'm a fellow Fiskars owner with St. Aug and I'm very curious to know what height you're mowing at. One of my gripes about the mower (and it may just be my grass) is that I find that it doesn't cut everything. I've found that it only cuts the grass standing proud and misses anything leaning over below the "deck height" (I have mine set to 4"). I've also found that the mower doesn't cut anything that is too tall, like the runners that St. Aug sends up, leaving me to take a string trimmer out into the lawn just above my cutting height in a metal-detector-like motion to knock those down. Do you have any advice? I'm not sure if I've found genuine issues with the mower that are specific to our grass type, if I should try cutting a little lower or more often (planning 2x a week this season, rather than last year's weekly mow), or if my watering game is off, or something else I'm not even thinking of. Any light you can shine?

    • @smallsouthernlawn6909
      @smallsouthernlawn6909 3 роки тому

      I think with the gearing and manual style of the Fiskars, it's always going to leave some stragglers behind. The speed of the blade just isn't consistently fast enough to catch everything so it seems to always take a couple of passes or just accept the stragglers until the Wednesday mow. Also, with the highest level of cut setting, my St. Aug starts to get a little soft/floppy. I try to keep mine at around 3" tall with 2 cuts per week. I've often taken it down a little lower for the first 2 cuts of the season, to knock off any dormant bits still lingering. Now over at my friends house, his St. Aug thrives at 3.5", so I think each stand of grass may be a little different. As soon as I'm over this knee injury, I'll be back at it again on both lawns with a surprise on my backyard (Bermuda and Allett) which will hopefully standup better to dog damage than my Zoysia and St. Aug did.

      For me it does the job as good as the string trimmer did previously. I have a few boards that have warped at the bottom and that causes a little more of an issue but if you have a straight fence line, I think it would be a good tool for the job.
