Recipe:
Coconut oil-80%
Cocoa Butter-20%
There are different philosophies on the amount of salt to add. I added fine sea salt at one third the amount of oils. In this case my oils equaled 450g so I did 150g sea salt.
Use a lye calculator to configure an exact recipe for your mold. My favorite is www.soapcalc.net/calc/soapcalc...
I use a 33% lye concentration and 25% SF.
Supplies:
Windy Point Salt Water Mermaid Fragrance Oil: www.windypointsoap.com/products/salt-water-mermaid-fragrance-oil
Manual hand mixer: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
I buy my silicone spatulas, whisks and plastic measuring bowls with a handle and pour spout at Dollar Tree. They are inexpensive and work great!

    I tested this recipe out 2x and had tons of tiny bubbles throughout the soap. I'm not sure what happened there.

    • @summitvalleysoap6611
      @summitvalleysoap6611 8 місяців тому

      Bubbles are produced by your immersion blender. There are lots of tips out there about how to reduce this. Since this recipe is so slow to trace, I can see how it would have even more because of how much more blending it would require. Some people approach it with different blenders and I recently saw where someone drilled a hole into their blender to help. You can also let the batter sit before pouring, bang the batter on the counter to bring the bubbles to the surface before you pour, pour over a spatula, etc... The amount of ways to combat this is almost endless really.

    Hi! Sitting here surrounded by supplies. This is my first time ever making any soap, and I’m struggling with all the chemistry! How much essential oil would I add? I have 1 litre (33.81oz) of coconut oil. I have also read it’s good to sub 1-2 oz with castor oil, and I have also read it’s good to add citric acid, so I’ve bought these things as well, but I don’t know how much to add because I don’t really understand how to use the soap calc and I’m worried it will take too long to cure/wont set if I make changes. Do you have any advice?

    • @summitvalleysoap6611
      @summitvalleysoap6611 10 місяців тому

      Be sure to use a soap calculator so you don't get the calculations wrong. Most of them include fragrance. Adding castor oil changes everything but that's what the calculator is for. Citric acid is more complex and I've never seen a soap calculator with that on it. There is a formula for citric acid as it will eat up some of your lye. If you've never made soap before, I wouldn't start with citric acid.

      It’s nice to have when you have a very messy & greasy pan you need to clean. Not everyone uses their dishwashers, you end up either rewashing some dishes or rinsing them off later. It does make your dishes squeaky clean. Just have to give it a try. Also works well as a laundry soap. I’m a soap maker and I make it too. I guess it’s a soapy thing for us. Plus the price is much better than the store bought stuff.

    Thank you for this video! I don't understand it's not reaching trace fast like yours... I tried mixing for almost 2 minutes and it stayed liquid. I did 40gr of coconut oil, 16gr of water and 7gr of lye (I used a lye calculator). I'm new at soap making 🙋🏻‍♀️ I did my dish blocks with SCI and SCS for years but the price of those ingredients is becoming super expensive. Any tips would be super appreciated 🤗 thanks!

    • @summitvalleysoap6611
      @summitvalleysoap6611 2 роки тому

      Ok...I work in oz so I had to go to soapcalc to check your numbers. If you use my recipe with 100% coconut oil, 0% superfat and a 35% lye concentration you should have 40g of coconut oil, 13.61g of water and 7.33g of lye. That isn't too far off of what you have but when working with tiny batches that may be the difference. What superfat did you put into your calculator? For dish soap, you want 0%. Mine hits trace lightning fast. Like...I can barely control it. I can't make a big batch and pour because it traces so fast. Another possibility is that your fragrance is slowing down trace or that mine is speeding it up. Every single thing you put into the recipe will have an effect. Also, what blender are you using? If you are stirring by hand it may take a while. Hope that helps.
