This was our last time on the beach in Las Penitas, right next to Leon, Nicaragua | Surfing in Nica
The beautiful beach in Las Penitas/Poneloya was ours to enjoy one last time. We found a local eatery and spent some time there, enjoying seafood dishes. There are surfing schools all along the coast and we even saw beginners practicing... I took a walk on the beach but couldn't find a way out back to the main road; some kids offered to let me pass across their parents' property if I agreed to pay them a dollar!
In my opinion, this is the best Nicaraguan beach on the Pacific side: it's close enough to the major city of Leon and yet quiet enough to have a rustic vibe. There is even the possibility of being completely surrounded by nature if one walks all the way to the National Park at the Southern end of Las Penitas, right after Barca de Oro. All in all, you won't regret visiting and it's virtually unknown by tourists from outside of Nicaragua: the locals are also extremely friendly.

We had the beach in Leon, Nicaragua all to ourselves | Walking in Poneloya and Las Penitas

This was a beach day: pretty much every day is like that in Nicaragua. We took the local bus from the barrio of Subtiaba in Leon to the beach in Poneloya. You can get some shade under the thatched roofs where municipal workers sell seafood dishes to beachgoers. This particular day happened to be quiet so I took a long stroll towards the cliff that divides Poneloya from Las Penitas. There is a l...

After doing our groceries in La Union, we went back to Las Penitas and enjoyed the beach. As there were no further availabilities at Barca de Oro, the following day we checked into a hotel within the urban area of the City of Leon. The main attraction in this bustling city of youth is the Cathedral; the Spaniards actually intended to build it in Lima, Peru and it ended up in Leon, Nicaragua by ...

After having checked in at Barca de Oro, an original hotel surrounded by fishing boats at the very end of the beach in Las Penitas, we wanted to catch the bus that would take us to the indigenous barrio of Subtiaba in the city of Leon. The last bus stop happened to be right in front of the hotel: this is where you hop on to the chicken bus that will collect passengers from Las Penitas and Ponel...

After having explored San Juan del Sur, we took a shuttle to Leon, Nicaragua and from there a taxi to our hotel Barca de Oro in the twin communities of Las Penitas/Poneloya right on the Pacific Ocean. Las Penitas offers to surfers what San Juan can only dream of: right there in front of the hotels without having to take a 30 minute ride outside of the town. As Las Penitas and Poneloya are techn...

On our last day in San Juan del Sur, I took a stroll down the main street that goes along the beach and ended up at the town's gym, located in the northern part of San Juan. The gym itself is basic but it has everything that you need to stay in shape: there is no air conditioning but with a view of the beach and the thatched roof above the machines you can't go wrong! Since there is very little...
The beach in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua finally became alive on a Sunday afternoon !

I took a stroll down the San Juan beach and it just happened to be teeming with activity as it was a Sunday. This beach is mostly visited by locals: tourists will take the shuttle to secluded beaches in the area such as Maderas, Remanso, Marsella, Majagual, etc. I talked to a fisherman as well as some kids with a pet monkey... As you can see on the video, there were children playing on the beac...

One of the landmarks that San Juan del Sur is known for is the giant statue of Jesus de la Misericordia. There are two ways to get there: the road or, if you're more spiritual, climbing up the rocky cliffs above the ocean. Once you arrive at the top, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view not only of San Juan but also of the entire rocky coastline stretching both to the Costa Rican border a...

We finally went for a swim in the ocean at the San Juan del Sur beach! I couldn't show you when I went even further as my camera is not waterproof and I didn't bring the protective case with me. It took us about a day to get used to San Juan del Sur. Unlike Managua or Granada, this town doesn't have supermarkets but rather small corner grocery stores where the prices of basic commodities are relatively higher due to the fact that customers are mostly North American tourists. It's a great vantage point where you have many souvenir shops and restaurants; there is also a live band that will play Nicaraguan village folk music for you, presumably for a tip. When you ask for directions you might want to be a little more modest. Like say excuse me/compermiso, do you know where this street might be. That way locals will be more kind to help. Not, lady where is this street at!!! 🫤

I asked the girls first but it wasn't really clear if they even acknowledged me... so I turned to the lady. We were looking for a grocery store everywhere but couldn't find it, kept being sent back and forth and my Spanish is still not at the level where I can understand the locals 100%. Nobody spoke even a single word of English... that was extremely disappointing in a tourist and expat mecca like San Juan and especially from young people, wouldn't you agree? So what you're unfortunately seeing at the end is a culmination of a series of disappointments about basic stuff.

That bird I've seen it flying free on the green areas of Managua, not long ago I saw one of them while I was on my car, it was standing on a fence near the bus stop of UNAN Managua, and in the past, like 3 years back, I saw another one in the patios of the former UCA. People gets very shy when talking to a foreigner, so they're not too talkative to you, the monkey they held is commonly called, spider monkey or mono capuchino.

Killer development. Bosques Del Mar. Close to the beach in a canopy of huge trees. Dirt cheap. Water and power a lot . Gonna build a little brick house. Are you sure you are going to make it? I went to that La Fise Bancentro in Chinandega just a few days ago .They only gave me 31 córdobas for each American dollars I exchanged. Since the President had frozen the rate around 36.5 I believe I never even bothered to check the receipt. Please do... 04:10 Don't tell me it's closed? With a motorcycle in front and wooden doors open? 05:11 This is getting more and more hilarious... Do you speak some English? And the man at the door says: very little (muy poco)...
