How Edward Van Halen modified Rock songwriting

Find out how using a classical composition technique helped Edward Van Halen forge a new songwriting vocabulary in Rock music. We learn how he employed the Tierce De Picardy in song hooks to put a smile on the face of Rock! Please excuse my brain malfunction at 1:25 when I say Pentatonic Chords. I meant power chords!

I have long wondered if EVH, Slash, Nuno etc have ever sucked in guitar. They had to but I havent found any record where some of these guitars gods would suck (except when Slash was totally drunk). I wondered if they learnt to play good really fast. Like when EVH picked up his brothers guitar for the first time he probably was really good player after a year, maybe in half a year. EVH once said that he hasnt technically got any better since their first album and why would he even need to. Thats a technically masterpiece guitar playing album. And he probably played with that master technique years before the first album. If anyone has a recording of any so called guitar virtuoso when they were beginners I would really like to hear them "suck". Of course their time there were very limited ways to record your stuff. But lets say younger virtuosos like Kiko Loureiro or teemu Megadeths present guitarist who is very young. Is there any recording where he was beginner... are they ashamed to share recorfing when they sucked.. that would engourage all players to show that they really sucked sometime too =)

@@bogse there is a recording on UA-cam which claims to be Ed as a young teen. Sounds like a cassette recorder in a bedroom and quite a lot like Ed but also quite mundane in many ways. Good ideas but certainly not groundbreaking at all. If that helps any. Cheers 🤘🤘

I have heard some recording that claims to be Eddie jamming at home different songs at least Somebody get me a doctor (Van Halen II)... no idea if thats really Eddie: named: Eddie Van Halen 1974 jamming at home ..thats still pretty advanced stuff played in that recording. But certainly he got much better than that if thats Eddie. @@bogse I think it’s been accepted as Ed by a few reliable people but this is from the back of my memory. Thing is Ed was 19 in 74 and had been playing 8 years by then. In today’s climate one might expect him to have progressed more by that stage but this was pre UA-cam, pre ED! He literally invented a vocabulary. Seems like his biggest improvement period came between 74 and 77 judging from that cassette. Hope that’s been helpful to your point. 🤘🤘🤘

To my ears, the definitive “Ed” sound is heard on Beautiful Girls. There is this percussive, woody “thwok” that I haven’t heard anyone replicate. Unfortunately, Ed was secretive about what he did and didn’t talk about it, be it his gear or tricks or technique, and he took all that shit to his grave. Kind of like, you can have a taste, but you can’t have the recipe because it’s mine. That makes me angry with him, even though I understand it. Although a few months apart in age, I have a childish tantrum for his being selfish because he didn’t share, and I want some too, so badly. Like many others, I will always mourn his loss because his unique talent cut me right through and I have an enduring fan’s love of him.

The truth is I didn’t actually meet him but was about a foot away , I couldn’t get the courage , I was very high at the time on Peruvian yellow flake . That was superb breakdown and I like your theory . One thing I can hypothesise is Eddy was always very keen tone ranger and oddly I believe the best time he had was early on and he went over saturated ,just my opinion here . The point though I wanted to make is I believe he kept secrets about his sound that he would not reveal to anyone ,he was competitive like that. Call it his secret sauce alchemist vibe. So I suspect he may easily have had that amp .load.. amp .. box ..or di chain . I also have always suspected he had lighter than 009s .. maybe 008s.. and or maybe a lighter 4,5, or 6 set ..special set .. I have no evidence of this but curious what you think. I also

not trying to take the piss but people are always chasing the marshall brown sound for some reason when Ed used his own brands since the 90's. The last amp he used was the EVH 5150III. So it's cool to tone chase and what not but in reality Ed's tonal vision was using the 70's setup but James Brown iteration were what Ed has in his mind for the most ultimate heavy crunch tone. If you want Ed's tone, just get an EVH amp and practice his riffs day and night.

When Eddy was shaping the 5150 with James Brown he kept asking for more gain, and James would tinker and eventually ending up adding a whole other gain stage. So I think in effect what he did in the early 70's is add an extra preamp section to give him that sustain. You're right it's not just a cranked marhshall, it wouldn't have recorded well at all and the break up would've been very harsh and not harmonic. Good video man! awesome playing.
