Third Annual Year-End McStream: One song from each of James McMurtry's albums, starting with one of his most recent songs that will be on his new album next spring, and working backwards in time. Come on by and set a spell.
Silent Night by Dave and Bob
Переглядів 104День тому
A simple rendition of the ancient yuletide classic with myself on classical guitar and my late, beloved brother in law Bob Di Chiro producing and on backing synth. Recorded in November 1991 in a private studio Bob was running at the time, all done on Digital Audio Tape, the last great analog development before digital swept the music recording world.

Here's a how-to breakdown for James McMurtry's Canola Fields, from his 2021 release The Horses And The Hounds. I've had about half a dozen requests for this, but struggled to figure it out for some while. As always, hope it helps those looking to learn the song. I know this is very long, but it is the most challenging James song I've tackled of the 70 or so I have learned, not because the chord...

Dave medleys Hold On by Tom Waits & Dusty Pages by James McMurtry
Переглядів 162Місяць тому
I've taken to playing these two songs together as a medley: Hold On by Tom Waits, from his 1999 release Mule Variations, and Dusty Pages by James McMurtry, from his 1992 release Candyland. Guitar is tuned DADGBD with capo on fret III so that the songs are in the key of F, although I believe James plays Dusty Pages with capo on II, and I know Hold On is originally in the key of E, but this works...

My very first McMurtry UA-cam video was this song way back in March of 2021. I've leveled up several times since then, and can do it much better now :) Thanks to all for the support these past several years!

Thanks so much ! I totally appreciate this and love the performance !
You are very welcome! Thanks for the kind words, hope this helps out 🙂
Thanks Dave! Cool tune.
Wow, you are fast! 😄
Thanks Dave, so pumped you hit this one and loving learning it.
Hi Dave. It's on my calendar. I will try to join!
Great! Hope you can make it :)
Thanks so much for these ! Would you please demo 60 Acres ?
Hi Thomas, thanks for subscribing! I'd be happy to do a how-to for Sixty Acres. Such a great song, and a lot of fun to play. Should have something together over the coming holidays, I'll have some time. Meanwhile, here's my most recent rendition of the song from my livestream last August, this takes you right to it: ua-cam.com/users/liveBZCmlynwPAk?t=2870s Thanks for the request, stay tuned!
👍
Wonderful sound, great to hear you have classical guitar in your repertoire as well!
Thanks for watching! I started out in classical, had delusions of being a classical guitarist when I was a wee sprout ;)
Very nice Dave. RIP Bob.
Ah you're a good man bro! Thanks so much for this video. Just heard this for the first time and gotta play it!
Thanks for watching, hope it helps out :)
Sounds similar to Carlisle's haul chords?
Indeed, the shapes are basically the same, and he uses the same ones in a couple dozen others as well...
A very fine version, indeed.
Thank you for watching and for your kind words! And also thanks for subscribing 🙂
Bravo! Thanks for putting some shape to a song I have been messing up for 3 years. ;)
Thanks Toby! Hope it helps. 🙂
Appreciate it Dave. I suppose I have plans for the weekend now!
Thanks for checking it out! Hope you get it down quickly :)
Thanks so much, will enjoy learning this in upcoming days. Such a good song, and especially fun because I live near said white-knuckle ride!
Thanks for watching! Good luck working it up :)
Thanks Dave! You da man
Thanks for checking it out!
I have been playing around with this song as well. I understand exactly where your coming from. After watching you I am confident I can put it together. Thanks Dave!
Thanks for your kind words, and I do hope it helps!
Thanks so much Dave. I laughed and I cried and I got out of my head for an hour, well 2 hours, because I watched it twice. :) I appreciate you! 💕
I'm glad to have helped give you a little relief 🙂
🎉🎉
Just wanted to let you know that I was super excited to see you put together another video on a McMurtry tune. I'm sure I speak for a lot us when I say that I appreciate all the time and effort you put into making these. You really have done us all a huge favor.
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words! I really enjoy doing these - sure wish something like this had been around decades ago. It's great to know other players are finding them useful. Thanks again!
Nice playing, Dave! I have that same t-shirt and my Takamine 12-string is very similar to yours - lovely sounding guitar😊
Thanks for watching! Love the shirt and the guitar... I play it pretty much every day! I've worn a spot on the top near the soundhole...
Zevon - total legend!

Beautiful, Dave
Thanks Beth 🙂

Get back to your antics with our Jenni soon, Brian T...Thank you Dave in so many ways for this one...And thank you Jenni for being who you are and also to James for not having to think for a second when it comes to helping out a friend..What a tribe..Proud to be a part of it in some way..
Fucking excellent cover my dude, you got the rhythm down great. I could never figure it out. Great vocal delivery too. Peace x
Thank you very much for watching and for your way-too-kind words. I really appreciate it 🙂
One of my favorite Warren Zevon songs, thanks for posting it.
Thank you for watching!
Great version of a great song from a great album!
@@maring.214 Agree, that whole album is fantastic.
Canola Fields shirt looking good there, Dave! And thanks for doing a Zevon song, another of my favorite artists.
Thanks very much! As it happens, I've just posted another Zevon cover, My Sh!t's F*cked Up. You can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/aD5EU42Ayxc/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!
I dated a girl named Myrtle Wood!!
That's too funny!!
Yes Breedlove does make a great guitar!
Indeed they do, I have two, the other is a 12 string in the same body shape, made of myrtlewood. Lots of guitar for the money.
wow, that was...refreshing. Your playing of this McMurtry song made me feel good. You were in the moment. Thanks Dave.
Thanks Randy 🙂
Very nice Dave. What’s that a Breedlove your making sing??
Howdy, yep, it's a Breedlove Pursuit Concert body guitar. The cedar top really makes the sound, I love it. I've got a Breedlove 12 string in the same body style as well, they make excellent guitars. Thanks for checking it out!
Very wonderful and helpful. Dave, I want to send you a message and a request... how do I do that please?
Thank you for watching and for your kind words! There doesn't appear to be a way to send a direct message to UA-cam members, near as I can tell. But if you're on Facebook, you can message me there, I go by my name there as well. To tell me apart from the other Dave Drapers, my avatar is a stylized image of the Statue of Liberty with a bullet-riddled shield on her arm instead of her book. That is the only social media I'm on, I'm afraid. All that said, feel free to at least ask for your request here in public, I'm very happy to get them! That's what others have done. Thanks again!
@@DaveDraperGuitar Ok, so if and when you find some time to work it out, I would love to have to post "Levelland". I would really appreciate it and I would also look forward to hearing you play it too!
@@randallanderson589 Hey Randy! This is an easy one... I did a demo for Levelland a couple of years ago, and you can get it here: ua-cam.com/video/oZ6RW6KgwR4/v-deo.html Also, I've done the song in one of my livestreams last year. Here's a link to that spot from Aug 23: ua-cam.com/users/liveqhKbZOoHDaM?t=3716s Hope this helps!
@@DaveDraperGuitar Thanks Dave!!
Far feckin out!!!!!
These videos were not here when i first tried learning James - Thanks Dave!
Very glad you find them helpful! I went for many, many years not being able to play much of James's stuff, so once I had learned so much from his pandemic livestreams, I wanted to pass it along and make it easier for others to get there. Happy to fulfill requests, don't be shy ;) Thanks for watching!
I'm a piano player. It's so odd that in guitar tutorials no one ever uses the words Beat, Bar line, or measure. As in 4 beats of C in the first measure, followed by 2 beats of C , then 2 beats of C 2 followed by 2 beats of C sus in the 2nd measure. I really enjoyed the video and you have a great relaxed demeanor. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and for your kind words! I sure can't speak for other players, but for my part, I simply have an extremely weak grasp of music theory, so relating things in those terms is something I'm just not able to do. It's always been my Achilles' Heel, and a big reason why I switched away from my initial music major... I did study classical guitar for some years in my youth, and can read music, but the way sheet music is used between guitar and piano is very different. There's really no such thing as sight reading when it comes to guitar sheet music, because most notes can be played in at least two places on the neck, and some as many as four, so it takes time to work out where one's hands need to be when. I take nothing away from pianists! It's a whole different set of challenges, with each note being sounded in only one place, so different planning is needed. I've always thought that this difference is what allows guitar players like me to get away with nearly nonexistent music theory understanding and still play something credibly...
Dave, amazing work here. Found this while looking into James' techniques and tunings, you have quite an ear. Any chance of getting chord fingerings in a tab format? Excellent adventure in double drop D.
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words! Afraid I have to disappoint you on tabs though, I've never used them and being honest, that's just more work than I want to do (or have time for)...! I try to show my fingerings as clearly as I can so that folks can get there - hope these help. 🙂
Listen on replay?
By all means, please do :)
Awesome as always. A light in these dark days. Dave and all the McPeeps we see each other through ❤️
Thanks so much Miriam... hang in there.
From the outside looking in, I don’t hear any change. Maybe I should take your word.
Thanks so much for the very helpful video. I'm close to being able to play this, one of my favorite McMurtry songs.
Very glad you are finding it useful! Thanks for checking it out :)
Cracker. Thanks Dave.
Thanks for checking it out!
Superb set!
Thank you! I appreciate you checking it out :)
Very nice Dave. Great song.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks very much for posting and for all your walk-through videos! Have you worked out this one yet? I’ve been trying to work it out but the tuning/chords are puzzling me…
Thanks for watching! I have indeed worked this one out, just performed it in my most recent live stream. Here's a direct link to that spot: ua-cam.com/video/Q6NB3X1ateE/v-deo.html James played it in double drop D in the first few clips I have seen recorded of this song (and that's how I play it); here, he's playing the baritone, which is tuned to whatever the bari equivalent of DDD is, and then capo on fret I - still in the key of D, apparently. I won't be doing a how-to on this tune (or his other new songs) until after his new album comes out, out of respect - but once it's out (I'm hearing sometime next spring) I'll put something up. 🙂
@@DaveDraperGuitarFantastic - you’ve got me as a new subscriber! I love “Pinocchio in Vegas” as well - he didn’t play it when I saw him in Santa Cruz, but the eTown version is great. That one I worked out for myself😊
@@maring.214 Thanks for subscribing! Agree, Pinocchio is one of his easier songs to play...
Preciate it Dave🫡. This is one of my favorite songs, and now I can finally play it🤘
So glad you found it helpful! Thanks for checking it out.
