600HP Turbo VR6 Swapped MR2 Spyder - Build Progress Update
Hey mate what brake line did you use, my line hits the trailing arm cheers
Chase bays lines, are your calipers flipped left and right by chance? Not sure if that would make a difference though.
What is the advance or retard procedure for camshaft A retarded bank 1 after doing a timing P0012 its the exhaust cam
What welder did you use? is it still holding up?
Harbor freight vulcan omnipro 220, and yes it's still completely fine! Preheat and welding fully around is critical. There's horror stories of these breaking off, but I've looked at the pics they took, and it's very apparent it was a cold weld that was the culprit.
Literally pulled a donor head for my Z4 didnt have the kit to hold it in time while i did it i do now and was trying to figure this all out great video saved me.😂
Glad it could be of use, yeah it's kinda of intimidating at first with the vanos thrown in the mix, but it's not all that bad in the end.
how is the ebay cv joint holding up?
It's just fine after almost 2 seasons of running it hard on the track
Yessir
Man savage set up, all working good with the speed sensor? And how about the welds how are they folding up seen as the arms are cast? Looking do same on out road drift bus 👌💪
Speed sensor works and the welds are holding fine thanks to welding all the way around and a proper pre heat cycle.
@@269Garage Thanks for the reply! Wasnt aware that you had to preheat cast, going to tack it with the flux core and take it to the local shop to weld it with the gas welder, been searching ages for a solution for the hydro so thanks!!
Also clean the heck out of it, no oils or rust.
Hey there, met you at Grid. (E46 sedan bois), thanks for the chat
Hey it was good meeting you guys! Hit us up any time.
Woaoooah welcome back again
New videos every month, maybe!
I want to do a vr6 awd swap in my starlet. This gives me inspiration
One of the best sounding engines
How big is the bed on your printer? The scoop came out larger than I would have thought....but it looks great on the car.
256mm cubed
@@269Garage Thanks
Did you fabricate the motor mounts or did you buy them? I would like to do a similar build for time attacks. I would go with the cast iron block 2.8L vr6 bore and striked to 3.0L. Where would suggest to get used vr6 engines? Is the engine you sourced from a v dubr32? Awesome job. Id love to see you using his car in autocross or time attacks or open series race days or practices!
I fabbed my own, and I sourced my engine and gearbox from a TT, which is the same block as the R32 or Touareg. I'd think the best 2.8 source would be from a mid 2000s jetta. Just make sure they're 24v instead of 12v. If I need a new block for mine, I'm gonna use a Touareg block since the R32 ones are rare. Also, all VR6 blocks are cast iron no matter what size if that matters.
Why not use a porchè sequential transmission?
Longitudinal vs transverse layout
great video, i’m currently timing my m54 and this came in clutch💪🏽
Heck yeah! Glad it could be of use.
Baby R8
If only I could get my hands on a tesla motor for the front wheels.
Ryan Torque Wrench.
lookin good
did you start drifting before?
I don't, Tyler is the driver. I just build stuff.
What transmission did you use?
DQ250
True gear head 👌
It's a blessing and a curse
Just wondering, how long will these last? Do they hold up well to the time and weather?
They should hold up just like any other ABS plastic, so just as long as other body panels I'd imagine.
Now if only someone sold these for people who have no access to printers…
I wish I had the mental capacity to start doing something like that, I barely can remember my keys when I go to work!
How about fixing the light in a different way instead of trying to shoot the vapors across the top...just reposition the headlight!!!!
Just an experiment, I'd use sanding and buffing compound with clear coat if I were doing this for real.
Amazing swap! My wifey won't even let me change the 1zz!
The only reason I was able to persuade this, was she drove a silver TT that I hit a deer with. This donor car was for "spare body panels".
Professional & brilliant sir 👍
Professional & brilliant sir 👍
Thanks!
Nice one bro 👍 😎 💪
Thanks!
Good job bro 👍 👍 👍
Thanks!
The cylinder walls on these are so thick! Thicker than a 2JZ or an RB26, and such a compact engine, they're barely bigger than a 4cyl. Theres a VR6 (forget which model) here in the UK with 1300hp, doesn't break a sweat. Congrats on owning a unique car, dude.
Thanks, I appreciate it. The weak point in these are the connecting rods, but that's simple enough to swap out for more ponies if I need them.
Is this timming is fit with out tool ?
I wouldn't attempt it without using the top two tools if that's what you're asking.
Cool stuff. More of this content.
Do the lifters have to be fully pumped with oil for assembly
I never disassembled mine, but it's not a bad idea to clean them out and re-prime them. But yeah they'll be fully collapsed on initial startup if they're dry.
I always get confused about the initial mating of the block to head. No one mentions position of pistons TDC1? and the intial positions of cams so the valves don't come into contact with pistons🤔
I usually put the head on and cams in with no pistons at TDC, but with piston 1 close to TDC. Now if the cams are already installed on the head, I'll get the double dots lined up and some valves are sticking out, then it's a matter of just keeping piston 1 like a slight bit counter clockwise of TDC until the head is torqued down, then move it back to TDC after.
Yeah just paranoid 1st timer. Thanks
Hallo undzwar habe uch eine frage wo kann ich am besten im Video sehen wie die Vanos funktioniert ist das vlt bei min 11:43 ? Ansonsten Super erklärung 👍💪
I don't do a great job at explaining how it works completely, but I rebuild the vanos unit in this video, around the 3:11 minute mark ua-cam.com/video/bZOUDOGpYf4/v-deo.htmlsi=ldU9BNY0UPUyW7tD
@@269Garage Ok, is that the pitch wheel with the rotor inside, if so then my question has been answered Thank u very much 👍💪
Everything with the timing components are technically external to the VANOS, and the VANOS acts on those little spiral splined pistons to change the timing. At least that's my understanding of it. The camshaft position sensors operate from those oblong shaped pieces that have the arrows on them. This is also my first time rebuilding one of these so I'm not too familiar with the exact terms for all of the components.
Thanks 😊
@@269Garage Im sorry for asking too many question this is my last question 😂 The pistons on the right and left are both activated at the same time ?
very nice man !!!! thanks for all of your explications can't wait to see the next step
I've got a few things in mind, just waiting on funds
What size splitter did you use ? I bought one but it was far too big!
The listing said 67"x21"
I did have to pull the bumper a little also
Which ones did you like? I haven't been able to find similar ones.
where can I buy them or where? thank you
The rear ones were from clinched flares, and the fronts were cheap ebay ones
914🤞🏼
Nice!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Well its been at least a year or more does it still run ? Has it done anything like racing or is it just a incredible street car ?
It still runs, it's just a street car for now

I despise how many of my ideas you've had. Epic build.
Welcome back
Maybe I'll regain momentum
What cv kit.... I'm having so much trouble finding a good kit that's reasonably priced
We got ours from ebay. Just found the cheapest one that still had reasonable quality and bought it. Looks like from a search I just did I could only find UK sold ones at the moment.
Looks dam better than it was
Was a fun experiment, but there's definitely better ways to do it.
imagine carbon skinning for finishing touch
I wound up just wrapping them black
Finally. Imagined this swap before. Awesome. Watching your journey!
Thanks, been a little slow on new uploads lately, but I've got plenty more coming.
Do you know what the car weighs
I'd have to estimate approx 2450 lbs. I'll get it on a scale one day
such an amazing car....
Thanks!
Cool build
Thanks!
I always felt these engines sound exotic. Perfect for an RMR car
With a turbo, they sound even more so
