I am 72 years old and I learned the art of canning from my mother however I no longer do much except tomatoes because I use a lot of them. As I live in the province of Quebec , we do experience power outages in winter so this year I decided to can some lentil and vegetable soup, spagetti sauce and ratatouille. It takes less time and less propane to reheat from a pot than frozen Great video, new subscriber

Great stuff!!! Highly nutritious! Using winter season veggies. I’ve lived long enough to remember we didn’t see or eat fresh cucumbers, lettuces, or greens, etc until the next year’s late Spring or Summer.😊

My skint budget day. Green tea lemon and honey, another mug with left over lemons. 1 tin of pink salmon breakfast. 4 small slices gluten free bread toasted with honey. Cup tea. Museli.

Poverty is using leftover gravy or scrapings and bread ends to make meatballs. Using flour and salt only to make bread, rice with salt only , using necks, backs feet , innerds as meat seasoned with salt and pepper with ketchup. Cornmeal mush with ketchup. A slice of bread with sugarless tea for breakfast. This is regular eating, not poverty.

Why did you dump that chicken broth down the drain? That could have been used in another meal.

I cook like this all the time. However, I made my first water bread recipe 2 weeks ago. I like it better than store bought bread. I started by boiling it in boulion but after I made it in water I'm hooked. True depression cooking and it can be made with Jiffy or Biquick too.

Some great, straightforward ideas here. Absolutely agree with the idea to grow some greens in a little corner somewhere to improve the flavor and nutrition of home-cooked food. (We will also regrow our store-bought green onions for the same reason.) Do you find that soaked, uncooked beans cook thoroughly in the oven when you add them to meatloaf? I've used beans as a filler in meatloaf and meatballs before, but they were always boiled to doneness first. Ever since I heard about the lectins in undercooked kidney beans causing food poisoning, I've been very cautious about making sure dry beans are soaked and boiled thoroughly before we eat them.

I find because I cook my meatloaf for an hour they do cook fine but I do normally use cooked beans. I just had these available.

It's summer here now so we eat plenty of fresh salads with chicken strips or tuna or sausages. That is pretty economical compared coz we buy in bulk at the grocers. Soups, stews and curries are winter staples. Ingredients such as lentils and split peas are also common. You just need a little creativity to make a delicious and nutritious meal. Nice meal ideas. Thanx for sharing.

As a fellow Canadian and cat owner I can appreciate the pet hair and sweeping. I just discovered micro cloths and I use them for everything, cleaning, dishes, etc. I always wear gloves because when I clean I use very hot water. That Bar Keepers Friend is the best stuff ever invented! I love it and can get it at my local Dollarama which saves me a lot of money.

I enjoyed watching this video. Can I suggest that you take the suggestions people made in the comments and can you integrate them into your videos so that we can all learn? I enjoy reading comments but I am sure not everyone does. For example, someone commented about using ACV in the beans to soften them and counteract the gassy effect. Also, lemon juice can be used instead of ACV. This way, we are all learning from each other, which is a bonus to a channel like this. Also, some beans are gassy and for that reason, I avoid them. Perhaps the ACV is the answer but I don't know, I haven't tried it. Thank you for making these helpful videos.

Where do you live? I live in California and your prices are more than mine. And as far as inflation, we’ve had a good economy during this time. It’s just that corporations have increased pricing out of greed. That’s a good idea. Putting the beans in with thehamburger to stretch it and make meatloaf. I’ll keep that in mind. Just finished up with Thanksgiving and I’ve got a turkey carcass of which I’m going to cook for about 18 to 24 hours and make a bone broth.

All of your meals looked delicious. I miss going to the cupboard and pulling out home canned vegetables, veggie soups, kraut, pickled peppers, cukes and beets or tomato juice. Plus all of the food we put up in the freezer to go with it. My family hunted and fished, so we always had fish and game in the freezer too. I rarely ate beef growing up because of the venison in the freezer. The way that you can, freeze and cook, reminds me of how I grew up, great memories.

One thing I did was to ask the supermarket butcher or at the butcher shop, for chicken frames or carcasses. These were often free or extremely cheap for a large bag. More fiddly to pick over but a lot of meat and of course a rich broth. Wherever boneless chicken is sold, there bones somewhere. Also, if you saute all vegetables (not legumes etc) first, it adds more depth to the finished soups and you can make a roux by adding a little flour, cooking it off a little then add the stock or broth for a thicker soup. If stock is in short supply and milk powder is cheap, adding this to sauted vegetables thickened makes a tasty alternative. As does adding the milk powder to yesterday's soup to stretch it further and change the taste a little, so everybody thinks you have spent hours more cooking.

I buy a 10lb. bag of leg quarters (thigh and drumstick) for less that $1.00 ( usually anywhere from 59 cent to 89 cent) a pound. There are generally 11 to 12 leg quarters per bag. I make chicken and dumplings, bbq chicken, chicken noodle soup etc using these. And when portioned out it goes a long way.

I think a lot of people waste money because they let food go bad esp. fruits and vegetables. Menu planning for the week or more can prevent that. I am also a canner but I don't do it to save money. I do it to not waste any vegetables and fruit that we grow ourselves as a hobby and to reduce the salt, preservatives and other additives that are found in processed foods. It's just healthier. A win win situation!

I used to do most of my shopping at Independent, sub since prices have gone so crazy, I now do a lot of my shopping at Food Basics, No Frills and Giant Tiger, with an occasional trip to Walmart. I try to buy things that are on sale, and if I can afford to, I will stock up on things when the are on sale, or, for meat, I check for the stuff that is marked down because it's close to the best before dates.

We have to large long haired cats that shed balls of fur everywhere. We also have a small papillon. She is my darling little girl. She goes to the groomer every 3 months and doesn’t really shed. Love the steamer. I will have to get one soon. I also have put a narrow cabinet in my bathroom and no longer have things except soap in a cute dish to hold a bar of soap. Looks so much better.❤
