Flyfishing the Idrijca River, Slovenia - 9/3/24
The 5th and final day of fishing in Slovenia on the River Idrijca started off slow with the low water and spooky trout. Really thrilled to catch a nice hybrid marble/brown trout and a couple of rainbows in the morning.
Later in the afternoon, some rain and mist changed the dynamics of the river. Trout started feeding actively on nymphs with some rises to dry flies and emergers. Uros and I finally cracked the code using thin tippet and tiny flies to catch big trout. Donna landed another 21” marble trout, and some big rainbows. Had several fish that just exploded and snapped the 7x tippet, definitely exciting!
Another phenomenal day of technical fishing, challenging and rewarding at the same time. Huge thanks to my guide and friend Uros Kristan, Urko Fishing Adventures for his excellent choice of flies and his amazing spotting of the trout.

My guide Uros Kristan, Urko Fishing Adventures took me to another part of the Soca River in the morning. We could see some big fish in the pool and started to euro nymph for them. To Donna O'Sullivan's surprise and excitement, she caught and landed the biggest and gorgeous 21" marble trout on her trip so far. That definitely made the day Huge thanks again to Uros who always finds the best fish ...

A fun and relaxed afternoon of grayling fishing on the Ljubljanica River, Slovenia. It is only a few minutes drive from where I stayed in Vrhnika. The river was really low, but there were many eager graylings in skinny water. Missed a really big grayling, but had fun catching the smaller ones. Thanks again to Uros Kristan, Urko Fishing Adventures, who always gets me into fish!

Donna O'Sullivan wanted a more relaxed day of fishing, so Uros took her to fish the Bistra River, which is a local river only 5 minutes away. Bistra River is wild and beautiful, with low water and lots of downed trees and storms, which makes for some technical fishing! Despite the conditions, Donna caught several nice graylings on dry fly and some on nymphs. Huge thanks to my guide Uros Kristan...

8/31/24 Day 2 of fishing in Slovenia Fished the Soca River with a late start, and it turned out to be a phenomenal day with over 20 trout landed, mostly gorgeous rainbows and 6 marbles, the largest marble trout at 21in! Considering the low water and warm temperatures fish were really active. Some rain late morning freshened the river, that brought the marble trout out. After the rain, the mist ...

My guide Uros Kristan took me to fish the Sava Bohinjka River, about 45 minutes away from Vrhnica where I stayed. Even though the river was low, skinny water held big trout, chubs and graylings. I had lots of fun fishing dry fly in the morning, catching numerous wild trout in the 8-12” range, and a 14” rainbow, nice graylings too. We switched to euro nymphing and got many more bigger rainbows. ...

The last day of our trip to the Dunajec River, Poland. Guide Wojtek Kudlacz took Mai and I to another great section of the river. I started streamer fishing with my LTS Nitro 9ft 6wt with LTS SCSS-1H S123 Scandi head, and LTS Complete 40# shooting. Soca River, Slovenia I thought it's some unknown river and town in Montana then I noticed the guide guy has an accent and realized you're in Europe... Slovenia is a country broke away from former Yugoslavia. Seems you're having a ton of fun catching nice rainbows and those marvelous Marble trout... when water is that clear the fish will see you or the line as rising it's so difficult to present dry flies. My dream fishing destination is Kamchatka, Russia for Salmon and arctic char... Thanks for sharing!!!

      Thanks for watching Jason! The river is super clear and the presentation needs to be perfect. I was very fortunate to have Uros Kristan as my guide, in my opinion he is one of the best guides for Slovenia rivers! That was why I caught so many fish :-) Last year I caught about half of this year's trout, and only 2 marbles from Soca. The river gods were smiling on me on this trip! Russia will be out of reach for sometime. You could fish Iceland and get atlantic salmon, artic char, seatrout and big browns. It is also beautiful and pristine!

    You may want to play those bigger fish on the reel, rather than leaving line floating all over the place. Could cause some heartbreak one day. Gotta love the way a GoPro lens and a 4-weight turn 8" fish into epic-looking rod bends, though! Fun stuff! Hat isn't always so generous with her gifts!

    • @dmosull1
      @dmosull1 7 місяців тому

      Thanks for the advice Bill! However, it's not always possible to get the line back on the reel to fight the fish, I have lost fish trying to do that and I just strip the line, if it's not a really big fish. The LTS Finesse 4wt rod makes fighting those smaller rainbows a lot of fun, although it has handled 20+in fish really well too. Hat Creek is definitely tough at times. Hi Reid, there are not many spots to fish from the shore. You can fish at the riffle that comes into Baum Lake from Crystal Lake, or right off the car park where you see me in the video. You need to be careful of the mud when wading there! Best way is to have a float tube or water craft, you will have access to way more areas for fishing. Good luck and tight lines! Week days are better for less pressure.

      Dave, the flow have been high throughout the day recently. If the flow is low then fishing will be better. When flow is high, better to try Baum Lake or Cassel. Good luck and tight lines!

      Thank you. I have always fished upper Hat and always been intimidated about the Wild Trout section. But I feel like I know enough now to fish it. Might not catch anything but I want to at least wet a line there. I have a deep love for the history there from 1915 on.

      Thanks so much for watching Dave! The red rod is the LTS Complete Graphene 9ft 5wt, it is our latest and greatest fly rod series. Very light weight and easy to cast! Actually this is the 1st time I fished it and it felt great.
