Flyfishing the Idrijca River, Slovenia - 9/3/24
The 5th and final day of fishing in Slovenia on the River Idrijca started off slow with the low water and spooky trout. Really thrilled to catch a nice hybrid marble/brown trout and a couple of rainbows in the morning.
Later in the afternoon, some rain and mist changed the dynamics of the river. Trout started feeding actively on nymphs with some rises to dry flies and emergers. Uros and I finally cracked the code using thin tippet and tiny flies to catch big trout. Donna landed another 21” marble trout, and some big rainbows. Had several fish that just exploded and snapped the 7x tippet, definitely exciting!
Another phenomenal day of technical fishing, challenging and rewarding at the same time. Huge thanks to my guide and friend Uros Kristan, Urko Fishing Adventures for his excellent choice of flies and his amazing spotting of the trout.

My guide Uros Kristan, Urko Fishing Adventures took me to another part of the Soca River in the morning. We could see some big fish in the pool and started to euro nymph for them. To Donna O'Sullivan's surprise and excitement, she caught and landed the biggest and gorgeous 21" marble trout on her trip so far. That definitely made the day Huge thanks again to Uros who always finds the best fish ...

A fun and relaxed afternoon of grayling fishing on the Ljubljanica River, Slovenia. It is only a few minutes drive from where I stayed in Vrhnika. The river was really low, but there were many eager graylings in skinny water. Missed a really big grayling, but had fun catching the smaller ones. Thanks again to Uros Kristan, Urko Fishing Adventures, who always gets me into fish!

Donna O'Sullivan wanted a more relaxed day of fishing, so Uros took her to fish the Bistra River, which is a local river only 5 minutes away. Bistra River is wild and beautiful, with low water and lots of downed trees and storms, which makes for some technical fishing! Despite the conditions, Donna caught several nice graylings on dry fly and some on nymphs. Huge thanks to my guide Uros Kristan...

8/31/24 Day 2 of fishing in Slovenia Fished the Soca River with a late start, and it turned out to be a phenomenal day with over 20 trout landed, mostly gorgeous rainbows and 6 marbles, the largest marble trout at 21in! Considering the low water and warm temperatures fish were really active. Some rain late morning freshened the river, that brought the marble trout out. After the rain, the mist ...

My guide Uros Kristan took me to fish the Sava Bohinjka River, about 45 minutes away from Vrhnica where I stayed. Even though the river was low, skinny water held big trout, chubs and graylings. I had lots of fun fishing dry fly in the morning, catching numerous wild trout in the 8-12” range, and a 14” rainbow, nice graylings too. We switched to euro nymphing and got many more bigger rainbows. ...

The last day of our trip to the Dunajec River, Poland. Guide Wojtek Kudlacz took Mai and I to another great section of the river. I started streamer fishing with my LTS Nitro 9ft 6wt with LTS SCSS-1H S123 Scandi head, and LTS Complete 40# shooting. On the 2nd cast, with just the line out and a couple of short strips, BAM, a large trout grabbed one of the streamers! With Wojtek's help, and a fei...

In the afternoon, our guide Wojtek Kudlacz took Mai and I to the best pools with huge trout. Wading was challenging for us short fisherwomen, but with Wojtek we got there safely, and we were rewarded. I got 2 big browns...

Fished Hat Creek on some warm days up to the mid 80's F. Hatches started early in the morning, with tricos and caddis, other flies, a smorgasbord of flies for the trout. Not too many fishermen caught fish, only those who have figured out the correct fly caught them. Donna O'Sullivan used dry and dropper on her LTS Finesse 8ft6 4wt fly rod, with LTS Polyline WF4F, and LTS Color2 4wt reel. The tr...

Wow the waters are so beautiful there 😮
Yes, for sure! Well worth the visit especially for the marble trout. Thanks for watching :-)
Amazing day 🎉🎉 Upper socca?
Yes it was, upper Soca! Thanks for watching and tight lines.
Soca River, Slovenia I thought it's some unknown river and town in Montana then I noticed the guide guy has an accent and realized you're in Europe... Slovenia is a country broke away from former Yugoslavia. Seems you're having a ton of fun catching nice rainbows and those marvelous Marble trout... when water is that clear the fish will see you or the line as rising it's so difficult to present dry flies. My dream fishing destination is Kamchatka, Russia for Salmon and arctic char... Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks for watching Jason! The river is super clear and the presentation needs to be perfect. I was very fortunate to have Uros Kristan as my guide, in my opinion he is one of the best guides for Slovenia rivers! That was why I caught so many fish :-) Last year I caught about half of this year's trout, and only 2 marbles from Soca. The river gods were smiling on me on this trip! Russia will be out of reach for sometime. You could fish Iceland and get atlantic salmon, artic char, seatrout and big browns. It is also beautiful and pristine!
Thanks for watching! It was the upper stretch in the beginning of the video, we fished the middle/lower part in the afternoon. You will need to contact my guide Uros Kristan is you need more information.
which sector of the river was this?
I like how you handled the fish and kept it in the water.
Thanks for watching! Yes, we try our best to keep the fish in water and ready for the release!
So nice, thanks a bunch!
Thanks for watching and tight lines!
Hello Fish On! Sports. Respectfully, please stop “Hotspotting” Hat Creek. The parking lot is too full, and giving location just adds to the fishing pressure…..We all enjoy your videos, even without knowing the location.
Thanks for your comment. Hat Creek has always been a popular spot, with or without my videos. Try telling some of the guides to take their clients elsewhere, it's a tough creek to catch trout anyway!🤣
Hat creek power house 2 is world famous dude has been forever. I have multiple books that tell you exactly how to get there where to park and what rigs work best. Her video is just fine, and I enjoyed watching it.
I had I guide get pissed at me for showing up in the parking lot last weekend 😂. Like dude it's hatcreek ph#2 it's a popular spot. I don't mind you or your clients out there, you shouldn't mind me either.
@@thedanceingbear Thanks for your support!🙂
Donna and Hat Creek go together like peas and carrots to me!
Thanks Dave! 🙂
Such a nice outing, thanks so much!
Thanks for watching Paul!
Im glad you love the net. 😊sorry it took so long to get it to you. Fish on!
You made such a beautiful for me Matt, well worth the wait! 😆 Works great, love the sleek handle fits me hands perfectly. Thank you!
Donna brilliant guide in uros ....spent time on bistra in 2022
Yes, Uros is a fantastic guide! Bistra is a nice river with good fish. Fishing Slovenia with Uros again later this year, can't wait!
I never thought about Tenkara on Hat Creek, an excellent idea. Thank you
Thanks for watching Lyman! Yes, Tenkara fishing is effective in the fast water, or uro nymphing will be also an excellent option.
Donna knows that riffle as well as anyone!
Thanks for watching Dave!
Please use BARBLESS hooks, ya don't have to carve up the trout for quick release !
I do use barbless hooks, thank you! Did you not see one just got off by itself?
I don't. I flyfish to eat and put food on the table. Plus, barbed hooks increases the land rate. Only time I don't pinch my barbs is when it's required.
That was fun.I fly fished there a couple of times many years ago - didn't do as well as this young lady - a lovely spot indeed
Thanks for watching Henry! Hat Creek is tough, fun that morning and the next day no activty.🤣Winter fishing is not that great at Hat Creek, only for the die hards.😆
Thank you for mentioning me and my nets. I however am not a guide…yet
Oh? I thought you were. I stand corrected.
@@dmosull1 no worries i used to be and might be again
Nice job Donna. What a great day on Baum. I have fished that spot before but never in winter. Need to get up there!
Thanks for watching Dave! Baum Lake is good in winter, lots of browns if you hit it right. Weekends there are very busy, so go weekdays if you can. Tight lines!
@@dmosull1 Yes if I go it will be a weekday for sure.
My favorite place in CA.
Yes, it is good fishing in winter. Thanks for watching!
Good ole blow torch
Yes, my version of it worked well too!
It seems like you're fishing that dry dropper rig on something approaching a swing. Is that right? Seems to be working great.
After the dead drift initially, I let it swing with small short strips. That's when the trout would grab the dropper, very effective! Thanks for watching and tight lines.
You may want to play those bigger fish on the reel, rather than leaving line floating all over the place. Could cause some heartbreak one day. Gotta love the way a GoPro lens and a 4-weight turn 8" fish into epic-looking rod bends, though! Fun stuff! Hat isn't always so generous with her gifts!
Thanks for the advice Bill! However, it's not always possible to get the line back on the reel to fight the fish, I have lost fish trying to do that and I just strip the line, if it's not a really big fish. The LTS Finesse 4wt rod makes fighting those smaller rainbows a lot of fun, although it has handled 20+in fish really well too. Hat Creek is definitely tough at times. Thanks for watching my video and tight lines!
Nice 👍
Thanks for watching! :-)
I like Dunajec 😍❤❤❤
Dunajec is a fantastc river, some big fish there! Thanks for watching and tight lines in 2024!
Where on the lake is it best to fish? Im want to make a trip in January.
Hi Reid, there are not many spots to fish from the shore. You can fish at the riffle that comes into Baum Lake from Crystal Lake, or right off the car park where you see me in the video. You need to be careful of the mud when wading there! Best way is to have a float tube or water craft, you will have access to way more areas for fishing. Good luck and tight lines! Week days are better for less pressure.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching Paul!
Nice going!
Thank you and thanks for watching the video!
Where is the first spot ? Its so beautiful with the tree
It is the upper section of the Soca River not long after the descent from the mountain. If you are thinking about fishing there, you can contact my guide Uros Kristan.
The lower T has been very tough this year. When the flows were at about 550 cfs I managed to hook a nice one at that second spot but broke me off sadly. Did you try the spots down stream by the intersection by any chance?
Glad you hooked a big one, they're in there! I fished below the bridge and didn't go any further since it was getting late. Not sure I know where the intersection is?
Great to see Uros. Brought back happy memories!
Thanks for watching John! Uros is a fantastic guide and really nice guy, I really enjoyed Slovenian rivers with Uros.
You write: Unica.
Yes, thank you!
Wild?😂
Awesome video, thank you.
Thanks for watching and tight lines!
tie your flies and net your fish by yourself smh
Thanks for watching! Actually I do tie my own flies and used a few there, got some takes on them. However, the guide has the local flies that are tried and true, so we used his flies mostly. As for netting myself, I have on another river. Why not use the guide and his expert knowledge on flies when he is helping me? That's what we pay them for! :-)
'wild' rainbow?... 😂 Except maybe the grayling it's all stocked fish
I don't know, that's what the guide said. Could be stocked...but there are some huge rainbows in that river!
It’s not stocked it’s all wild
Nice video and you are with a great guide. Uros is the man to help you spot and catch fish
Uros is absolutely amazing as my guide, I would recommend to anyone who wants to fish in Slovenia! He can spot every fish in the river!
@@dmosull1 👍

Looks like fun. I always 0laned to fish there but there is never time. Congratulations 🎉quality fishing and amazing Guiding Wojtek. Pozdrawiam
Glad you enjoyed the video! One needs to take time to enjoy and fish the Dunajec! There are huge fish there, of course some luck and hard work is needed :-) Tight lines!
Which part of the dunajec is this I'm planning on going In September

Thanks! Glad you liked it, I certainly learned a lot from Uros about the karst system there.

Thanks for watching the videos! Good luck and tight lines up there.
Whereabouts are you folks based?
I live in the Bay Area, long drive to Hat Creek about 4.5 hours!
@@dmosull1 Oh my goodness. I had it in my head that you lived in Burney or Cassel based on how comfortable you are on that water. I have gone from impressed to blown away. If/hopefully when, I catch and quickly release a fish next week I will think of you folks and say..."thank you."
@@daveschlom4033 I have fished Hat Creek a long time, allbeit driving a long way! Have contemplated about buying a home there, but still undecided, considering climate change and wildfire risk!
@@daveschlom4033 Best of luck and hope you get some nice trout on Hat!
@@dmosull1 Those are considerations for sure. But if anyone is meant to live there...
Thanks for all the description info. I hope the flows are good next week. (I might be there...)
Dave, the flow have been high throughout the day recently. If the flow is low then fishing will be better. When flow is high, better to try Baum Lake or Cassel. Good luck and tight lines!
Thank you. I have always fished upper Hat and always been intimidated about the Wild Trout section. But I feel like I know enough now to fish it. Might not catch anything but I want to at least wet a line there. I have a deep love for the history there from 1915 on.
If you ever drive through Lassen Volcanic National Park I hope you check out the audio road guide. If I see you and your red fly rod I will venture a greeting. So glad you fish there regularly. Nice to know that nice anglers are on that great stretch of water!
@@daveschlom4033 Thanks so much! I have fished Lake Manzanita some years ago, hopefully that is still good! I probably be back at Hat Creek early August or the fall. Look forward to meeting you sometime on the river!
Yay. I love the red rod too. May I ask what it is? Is it a Reddington? The thank yous are something I aspire to do. (I get excited and forget).
Thanks so much for watching Dave! The red rod is the LTS Complete Graphene 9ft 5wt, it is our latest and greatest fly rod series. Very light weight and easy to cast! Actually this is the 1st time I fished it and it felt great.
I always enjoy watching Donna fish in that special place.
Thank you Dave, Hat Creek is special indeed in my heart!
