My pet Roadrunner - AKA - The Banded Rail or ("Ve'a") I found him as a baby chick and raised him in a cardboard box, feeding him worms and bugs. Every once in a while he would run away but then come back, until one day he didn't. We had him almost a year. Here he's taking a bath while we wash the car. Government housing, Tafuna, early 70s. The astronauts first contact with land since their fateful "Houston, we've had a problem" mission. This video was shot by my dad, standing on a ladder, with a reel to reel tape recorder going as well. All audio is from that tape recording. A short video clip shot by my dad before their return trip back to American Samoa from Western Samoa. This is Apia-Faleolo airport in Western Samoa. Sadly this plane crashed with 32 people on board about a year and a half after this was taken shortly after take off, enroute to American Samoa. That is my father and mother up on the platform greeting the astronauts. My father was the governor of Samoa at the time. I am so thankful for this video, this chance to see my parents...I know they were thrilled to meet the astronauts. I loved the month I got to spend in Samoa in 1970 when I was 20.
So glad you found this video with your mom and dad. What a great experience this was for everyone there. Glad you were able to spend time in Samoa with them.

My father was governor of American Samoa when the astronauts were there...he and my mother and my sister are in this video. My mother described in a letter to me how she would be walking in a conversation with one of the astronauts followed by the world press. I spent a month in Samoa in 1970...it was so wonderful!
Very cool your father was the governor and participated in so much history on the island. It was a great place to grow up. We were there from 67-75.
Aww, Coast Guard speed rescue boat…loved the sound of that boat every time she went out the mouth of Pago Harbor. My village Aeto fautasi is one those fautasi. I was 6yrs old and present on shore by Burns Philip

We used to call ve'a "sneaky-birds" because of the way they would lower their heads close to the ground when they were running!
I never managed to climbed those tall ones by the time I left Pago, but I did climbed the short ones in our backyard 😂

I went to Pago Pago in 1979 on Oriana. Wonderful time. Remember going to a supermarket in the Main Street buying US candy with my parents. I seem to remember a fish cannery on the waters edge as you sailed up the harbour. Not sure if my memory is correct.

Thanks Shatner, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah it must have been pretty cumbersome with the super 8 and old audio recorder on top of an old ladder but I'm glad he did it.
I've flown on that plane. Glad I did it was the most vintage plane I've ever flown.

I was there in 1981 on the Oriana :) A Family on board dis embarked to catch a plane to the USA, as it was the cheapest way from Australia to America....I can still remember walking down the Main street while it rained and the rain was hot. Also took the cable car to the harbour crater rim.....amazing

P&O use to regularly call at Pago Pago on Island cruises from Sydney as well as trans Pacfic voyages to the west coast of America from Sydney.

Hi AFTECH 72, I believe this was shot in very late 60s. Although it could possibly be the very early 70s. Definitely no later then 75, that's the year we left AS.

I believed I've flown on this airplane to Apia and back to Pago.. Summer 72' I was a seven yr old, can't be any other choice of aircraft at that time, right?
Hi Joe, The plane in the video is a Douglas DC-3. Tail Registration # is 5W-FAC and crashed on January 13, 1970. Your flight in 72 was most likely the same type of aircraft. So sad to hear...glad I knew nothing about that flight 2yrs earlier, I might have been to scared to fly at that time with that type of aircraft to, definitely wasn't a 707 or dc-8 (Pan Am and AA) for sure. I do remember the aircraft looked just liked this one, prop and tilted up(and loud lol) and was hoping it was this one for good memories. Thanks for all the Videos! In old videos and pictures of America Samoa I've seen kids in their small canoe's hanging out in the ocean, especially in the pagopago harbor but now the recent Samoan generation are scared of the ocean (not literally) and won't let their kids go near the ocean.
