Introduction To Selling Vintage Print Ads On Ebay
Wow, people will buy ANY damn thing, won't they?
@@fragslap5229 Coins, Stamps, and Comics are the top three things that people collect!
Welcome back mate, nice to see you back selling postcards 🇦🇺
@@fordfalcon85 glad to be back! Thanks for sticking around and supporting the channel.
Really good to see you! I cant find cards in my area. I've been trying auctions, but books of 100 general cards are going for 70-80 bucks a book! Is that to be expected?
@@timothyfrank733 sometimes it is unfortunately. It is area dependent on what you find in person. Try Mark’s ko-fi store that I mentioned in the video. He has several lots of 100 available and you can view what you buy before purchasing so there’s no surprises! Thanks for watching!! ko-fi.com/smpostcards

I've noticed your recent store listings...it's great to see you back on UA-cam also!

Welcome back! I think Epic Treasure Postcards is now in Sarasota Fl….right Ken?
Glad to see you back. Thanks for sharing .
@@EpicTreasurePostcards you’re welcome! I appreciate ya brother!
I have all original Ads. How and where do i sell them. I have about 100 pieces for sale.
I have a stack of Business ADS from the 20's - 40s I want to sell all where do I start. I have paper receipts from the Army with General signs also can someone help me??
How much does it cost to ship a vintage life ad? Also, how do you ship? Can you show us the process or give us some tips and tricks.
Where's the f. link to the website????
Thanks for all of your videos. I'm wondering how you're doing one year later?
Thanks for watching and commenting! I still love collecting ephemera and do sell from time to time but sadly can't find much time to devote as of late. I have a friend, Greg over at Blue Feather Ephemera who has a great channel on vintage print ads and he is doing awesome! If you have time you should go check him out as well! Thanks again. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!
What are u using to hold the ads
@@tdmeeks3 I use backing boards and the plastic sleeves. They help keep the ad clean and in shape while storing and shipping.
Just getting started in the Print Ad business. I liked and subscribed. Thanks for sharing your info.
@@mobernmd thank you for watching! Another great channel to watch is @bluefeatherephemera
I also like reading those old articles. The one on children behavior being studied would be a cool one to have. I collect books and things on children's behaviors and education. Find it interesting. Thanks for sharing your tips.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I just started this thing yesterday. I had bought a lot of ephemera bill heads and old bill head letters with fancy writing years ago and didn't realize how much I had. Not tons of it but enough to start selling on Ebay. I always tried to find ones with really fancy cursive writing. I hope they sell. Good luck with your print ads and I subscibed to your channel and maybe we can learn together!
Thanks for being here! Good luck selling!
Great information, that app looks really useful… Subscribed
Thanks for watching!
Small print ads are great too. Sometimes old valueless books have a bunch of ads (Train books sometimes have adverts for different depots, tickets, etc.) Old food boxes sometimes have adverts as well, its almost limitless. If you are willing to put the work in and list list list, you could get enough ads listed to where you make daily sales, then you can keep upscaling inventory, and build a store that sells only print ads and make a nice side gig out of it that can pay alot of your bills.
But how do you store all these print ads?
Thanks for watching and commenting. Feel free to check out my series that covers start to sold!
Have you noticed when cutting magazines that the pages aren't squared?
Are you cutting the pages out from a full magazine? Or doing it in sections? I have a 1979 one where pages are glued right to edge and I tried to use razor.
These LIFE magazines are stapled and pretty easily removed. The other magazines that have glue binding are a different animal all together. They can be processed but it takes a little more patience to remove the pages as clean as possible.
Nice job .. but i’d rather suggest no free shipping. i charge $1.00 and never any issue. You lost $10 on those 10 postcards. It adds up. 😊
In a dream world that would work bur in reality you will never be able to sell them all for that price even if you listed them for 5 years.
Hello, I am new to your channel. Blue Feather Ephemera told me about your channel. My question about processing magazines is, do you also clip out and sell the articles and other items besides just he ads? Thanks!
Definitely do not overlook articles. If it stands out to you then I'd suggest maybe doing a search to see what it may sell for. If it catches your eye then it may catch a buyers as well. Thanks for watching and commenting!
06:24 - 06:25 😂 💩
Great video Doug. Might I suggest that you think about getting away from "free shipping". For all my cards that sell up to $20.00, I charge $1.00 (eBay Standard Envelope) shipping and anything over that, I charge $4.95 (USPS Ground Advantage). Basically, sellers use free shipping because it gets them into that "filter" on eBay but most people know that free shipping on eBay is not really free. Most sellers who use free shipping, pad the cost of the shipping into the cost of the item. I've been selling postcards full time on eBay for over four years now and I've never had a customer ever complain about having to pay for shipping. As long as you make it reasonable and provide great customer service, you will sell more postcards and start getting "repeat buyers". Just a thought. Best of success to you in your eBay business.
I appreciate that!
I like what you’ve done with your store by focusing on higher end cards. A lot of time in research and pricing but it pays off in a bigger sell price average.
Clickbait, u wasted my time….. 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Thanks for watching!
Thank You Very Much for this !
The big problem with LIFE magazines is they are COMMON and everyone is selling the SAME EXACT ADS ! So do you "low ball" your prices to " $4.00 plus $3.00 shipping " ? Which is INSANE by the way.
I will like to just throw this out there : I sell a LARGE variety of vintage items. 1940s thru the 1980s . I am PARTIAL to ephemera for sure! Easy to BUY, easy to ship - easy to store !! I tend to avoid Ads torn out of magazines ( A Coke ad from the back of a National Geographic ; for example) . There are always MANY listed - of the same ad - so why should they buy mine? So I got the notion to sell ONLY unusual ads and LOCAL to my area ads (example a neighborhood Pharmacy that closed 40 years ago , a childhood movie theatre that is no longer , etc.) So , for the past 10 days - I have been ONLY LISTING ads . Nothing else. Listed a few hundred or more ! So far - I sold 3 or 4 for $15.00 to $19.00 . My eBay sales have DROPPED down lower than I can remember in recent history ! I will get back to "normal" eBay listings (and normal sales) by the weekend - but I kinda know that "ephemera listings are 'turtle sales' -- they move very slowly". But I will be happy to see those 'turtle sales" for $19.99 & $24.00 sprinkled into my "regular sales" over the next year or 2. I TRY to avoid selling the kind of stuff that all the other sellers sell. I think "outside" of the box , mostly .
Yep,… you have to feed the machine,… algorithms,….consistently listing, even once a week,…an active store rises to the top of ebay.
This is 100% TRUE . You stop listing for even 10 days - your sales go way way down.
Um, mailers , plastic sheets and cardboard backs are going to put a big CHOMP into the profits of a $14.00 ad. No ? I IMPROVISE . I have a TON of boxes, I trim them down and make flat "folders " . I trim them to the size I need. If it's not rock solid- I ad another single sheet of cardboard . FREE MAILERS (I have ALL my neighbors "save me ALL your Amazon boxes"!) . Instead of plastics and backings: When I go to the Thrift Store I buy those 12 x 12" binders with pages for scrapbooks OR photos . I unscrew the screws and for $1.99 - I now have 24 front n' back sleeves ! And these scrapbooks are EVERYWHERE for $1.99 ! I also buy the small scrap books for small ads and sometimes I buy the Baseball card holders for MICRO ads !
I do have issues with the photos looking "TOO perfect". People MAY think it;s a PRINT . I show shadows , edges , imperfections , the BACK of the ad. Just so it all doesn't look so glossy and shiny on an ad that's 60 years old. Make sense ?
Here is the problem: The BIG million selling magazine ads GLUT eBay listings! And there are people on there that sell them for $3.99 !! Playboy, LIFE, LOOK, National Geographic, REDBOOK, Women's Day , TIME , Rolling Stone, etc. It pays to DIG DEEPER and THINK OUTSIDE the BOX. I won't even TOUCH a Coke Ad with a 10 foot pole anymore. Why should they buy YOURS for $10.00 to $15.00 when they can buy the same ad for $3.99 ?
I will try that app. I have several ads already listed from a 1950 Saturday Evening Post but this app seems like it makes the photo taking much simpler. Thanks for sharing!
Cool! Gastonia is right now the road from me too!
I just ran into 200+ LIFE magazines from the 1900s majority are all very good conditions still, any tips on how to list them on eBay ? I’ll like to get rid of them as soon as possible!
TRY to list "lots" . "Lot of 5 vintage Coke Ads". LIFE ads are very very very very COMMON. Everyone is selling the same exact ads as you have for $5.00 a pop . "Lot of 10 Marlboro Man Ads" = $24.99 . Life and Life ads do NOT sell FAST. Everyone saved them . Everyone. What did you pay for them ??
I see u are just starting postcards...im about to jump in im going to use mailing STAMPS to ship out...is postcards over saturated or can i still make money
Awesome video
Thanks for watching!
I think I saw a similar card you post sell for $40 and you sold ot for like $5 or $6
It’s definitely a possibility!
You might consider updating this, as there is no longer an ebay fixed fee of .30. It's an ad standard rate, which goes up and down according to what PL rate you choose.
No links for Amazon as promised. Could you please rectify that? Thank you.
Check the video description. They should be there now! Thanks for watching!
@@thevintagecodgerThanks.
My listing page doesn't look anything like your listing page. Still, I got some very useful information from this video.Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Wishing you much success in your print ad journey!
Thanks. I downloaded said app and ran it on a test ad that had water damage, so it won't be used. The app didn't look exactly like your version, but I muddled my way through it. I played with the cropping tool, but because I had various results, some of them not good, I decided that any cropping I do will be done on my laptop. I saved it, so I will be able to upload it to said laptop. I have a full-size scanner, but it's in storage and, anyway, I don't have anywhere to put it, which is why it's in storage to begin with. LOL So, it's nice to have this app. Thanks again.
Thanks for this video. I'm just about ready to get started selling vintage ads. However, I have to order some supplies. You mentioned backing boards. Could you please give a reference where you get these? I'm already set to order some clear envelopes and rigid mailers. One other thing. So far, all the people I've watched in this genre are all selling ads from LIFE magazine. The vintage magazines I have are smaller sizes, in the vein of National Geographic, of which I have some going back to the 1920s; but most of what I have are in the 1970s-1990s, I think. I took apart a 1955 Coronet magazine, also a smaller-sized magazine, for practice. I had to look up foxing, as I'd never heard of it before. This one is fairly yellowed, and sadly, some of it has what appears to be water damage; so, those are toast. A couple of the ads have what could be very light water damage, but not very noticeable, so I don't know if they would pass muster or not. It also has some articles written by famous people of the time, like Judy Garland and a photo/article by Perry Como. The ad with Bob Hope in it has some water damage, I think. I still separated it so I can give it a better look under better lighting. Someone else I've watched said that you can also sell the articles, if it has enough interest, but I wouldn't know what to sell them for or how exactly to package them. Speaking of pricing, I really appreciate your explaining your pricing and shipping. My only question is: because my magazines are so much smaller, I'm guessing pricing on these might be more around the $10.00 range? Does that sounds about right? As far as ending/selling similar, I've heard it's best to end those listings that are at the end of their 30 days and are about ready to relist on their own anyway. I guess there's a way to figure that out. I will definitely be subscribing and checking your your Print Ads 101 (or whatever it is called). Thanks again. I hope this made sense.
Merry Christmas, Doug!
Merry Christmas to you too! Hope you've been doing well.
Another awesome video. I use to sell clothes and it makes so much sense to move in the same direction as you with ephemeral. I subscribed and looking forward to watching your journey.
Thanks so much! It's great to have you on board.
@@thevintagecodger Doug are you just selling postcards now?
Yes. A gentleman bought out my print ad store a few months back and I made the transition over to postcards in my ebay store. They're very similar to print ads with storage and ease of shipping. One good thing is that shipping is only 63 cents using ebay standard envelope. @@barryquilts
I really have enjoyed your video series on print ads. Do you try to cut your ads to certain sizes like 8.5”x11” or 8.25x11”? Is there a standard practice?
Thanks for watching! I will try to keep them pretty close to true size, but I will definitely try to clean up the edges a little and make them as nice and neat and square as I can. It really just depends on the size of the ad. I have had to trim some pretty close to the image and I have found out that it didn’t hurt to sell any, most people will frame these anyway. Thanks again for watching and don’t forget to lie and subscribe if you have it already! I really do appreciate you.
I only sold 2 items when i put up about 25. Most have NO views. As I've noticed, ebay now thinks it's Google Sponsored Ads. Listing fees used to be $.35 and now they are paying on people desperation, so they're basically a shit version of advertising. If you Google "eBay sales down" people are screaming about sales plummeting about 75%. Ebay allowed scammers to take over and destroyed us sellers for years. Just kept screwing us over worse and worse. They no longer care if we sell or not. They'll pull your stuff off unless you pay them, unless it's an item that's got no competition.
Fantastic video Doug! I made myself a spreadsheet, but I'll be downloading this app. Thank you man!
Thanks buddy! I appreciate you!
